Standards bodies don't just set technical specifications, they also drive greater understanding of topics like storage. This episode of Utilizing Tech, brought to you by Solidigm, features Dr. J Metz, Chair of SNIA and the Ultra Ethernet Consortium and technical director at AMD. Over decades of advancement, enterprise storage has evolved to be a central requirement of modern systems, especially where AI is concerned. And storage is a lot more than just capacity: It's about performance and power, connectivity and throughput, availability and reliability. Standards bodies like SNIA and UEC help raise awareness of these requirements while also setting standards to address them. Technological developments made in one area often have unexpected applications in others. This makes it even more important to foster open communication to enable ideas to spread.Host:J Metz is the Chair of both the Ultra Ethernet Consortium and SNIA, as well as a Technical Director at AMD. #luccacortizo #bosnia #futebolpelomundo #brasileirospelomundo #canaloutraliga

Ultra Ethernet promises to tune Ethernet for the needs of specialized workloads, including HPC and AI, from the lowest hardware to the software stack. This episode of Utilizing Tech features Dr. J Metz, Steering Committee Chair of the Ultra Ethernet Consortium, discussing this new technology with Frederic Van Haren and Stephen Foskett. The process of tuning Ethernet begins with a study of the profile and workloads to be served to identify the characteristics needed to support it. The group focuses on scale-out networks for large-scale applications like AI and HPC. Considerations include security, latency, ordering, and scalability. The goal is not to replace PCIe, CXL, or fabrics like NVLink but to extend Ethernet to address the connectivity and performance needs in an open standardized way. But Ultra Ethernet is more than hardware; the group is also building software features including a Libfabric interface and are working with OCP, DMTF, SNIA, and other industry groups.

We use the Deep Drilling Fields (~50 deg^2) from the Photometric LSST Astronomical Time-Series Classification Challenge (PLaSTiCC), in combination with a low-z sample based on Data Challenge2 (DC2). The analysis includes light curve fitting to standardize the SN brightness, a high-statistics simulation to obtain a bias-corrected Hubble diagram, a statistical+systematics covariance matrix including calibration and photo-z uncertainties, and cosmology fitting with a prior from the cosmic microwave background. Compared to using the zspec subset, including events with SN+host photo-z results in i) more precise distances for z>0.5, ii) a Hubble diagram that extends 0.3 further in redshift, and iii) a 50 % increase in the Dark Energy Task Force figure of merit (FoM) based on the w0-wa CDM model. Analyzing 25 simulated data samples, the average bias on w0 and wa is consistent with zero. The host photo-z systematic of 0.01 reduces FoM by only 2 % because i) most z

Untangling the Sources of Abundance Dispersion in Low-Metallicity Stars by Emily J. Griffith et al. on Monday 17 October We measure abundances of 12 elements (Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) in a sample of 86 metal-poor ($-2 lesssim text{[Fe/H]} lesssim -1$) subgiant stars in the solar neighborhood. Abundances are derived from high-resolution spectra taken with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, modeled using iSpec and MOOG. By carefully quantifying the impact of photon-noise ($< 0.05$ dex for all elements) we robustly measure the intrinsic scatter of abundance ratios. At fixed [Fe/H] the RMS intrinsic scatter in [X/Fe] ranges from 0.04 dex (Cr) to 0.16 dex (Na), with a median of 0.08 dex. Scatter in [X/Mg] is similar, and accounting for [$alpha$/Fe] only reduces the overall scatter moderately. We consider several possible origins of the intrinsic scatter with particular attention to fluctuations in the relative enrichment by core-collapse supernovae (CCSN) and Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and stochastic sampling of the CCSN progenitor mass distribution. The stochastic sampling scenario provides a good quantitative explanation of our data if the effective number of CCSN contributing to the enrichment of a typical sample star is $N sim 50$. At the median metallicity of our sample, this interpretation implies that the CCSN ejecta are mixed over a gas mass $sim 10^5 M_{odot}$ before forming stars. The scatter of elemental abundance ratios is a powerful diagnostic test for simulations of star formation, feedback, and gas mixing in the early phases of the Galaxy. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.01821v2

Cosmicflows-4 by R. Brent Tully et al. on Sunday 25 September With Cosmicflows-4, distances are compiled for 55,877 galaxies gathered into 38,065 groups. Eight methodologies are employed, with the largest numbers coming from the correlations between the photometric and kinematic properties of spiral galaxies (TF) and elliptical galaxies (FP). Supernovae that arise from degenerate progenitors (SNIa) are an important overlapping component. Smaller contributions come from distance estimates from the surface brightness fluctuations of elliptical galaxies (SBF) and the luminosities and expansion rates of core collapse supernovae (SNII). Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation (CPLR) and Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) observations founded on local stellar parallax measurements along with the geometric maser distance to NGC 4258 provide the absolute scaling of distances. The assembly of galaxies into groups is an important feature of the study in facilitating overlaps between methodologies. Merging between multiple contributions within a methodology and between methodologies is carried out with Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures. The final assembly of distances is compatible with a value of the Hubble constant of $H_0=75.0$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ with the small statistical error $pm$ $0.8$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ but a large potential systematic error ~3 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Peculiar velocities can be inferred from the measured distances. The interpretation of the field of peculiar velocities is complex because of large errors on individual components and invites analyses beyond the scope of this study. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11238v1

A reanalysis of the latest SH0ES data for H 0 : Effects of new degrees of freedom on the Hubble tension by Leandros Perivolaropoulos et al. on Tuesday 20 September We reanalyze the recently released SH0ES data for the determination of $H_0$. We focus on testing the homogeneity of the Cepheid+SnIa sample and the robustness of the results in the presence of new degrees of freedom in the modeling of Cepheids and SnIa. We thus focus on the four modeling parameters of the analysis: the fiducial luminosity of SnIa $M_B$ and Cepheids $M_W$ and the two parameters ($b_W$ and $Z_W$) standardizing Cepheid luminosities with period and metallicity. After reproducing the SH0ES baseline model results, we allow for a transition of the value of any one of these parameters at a given distance $D_c$ or cosmic time $t_c$ thus adding a single degree of freedom in the analysis. When the SnIa absolute magnitude $M_B$ is allowed to have a transition at $D_csimeq 50Mpc$ (about $160Myrs$ ago), the best fit value of the Hubble parameter drops from $H_{0}=73.04pm1.04,km,s^{-1},Mpc^{-1}$ to $H_0=67.32pm 4.64, km,s^{-1},Mpc^{-1}$ in full consistency with the Planck value. Also, the best fit SnIa absolute magnitude $M_B^>$ for $D>D_c$ drops to the Planck inverse distance ladder value $M_{B}^>=-19.43pm 0.15$ while the low distance best fit $M_B^

Constraining spatial curvature with large-scale structure by Julien Bel et al. on Wednesday 14 September We analyse the clustering of matter on large scales in an extension of the concordance model that allows for spatial curvature. We develop a consistent approach to curvature and wide-angle effects on the galaxy 2-point correlation function in redshift space. In particular we derive the Alcock-Paczynski distortion of $fsigma_{8}$, which differs significantly from empirical models in the literature. A key innovation is the use of the `Clustering Ratio', which probes clustering in a different way to redshift-space distortions, so that their combination delivers more powerful cosmological constraints. We use this combination to constrain cosmological parameters, without CMB information. In a curved Universe, we find that $Omega_{{rm m}, 0}=0.26pm 0.04$ (68% CL). When the clustering probes are combined with low-redshift background probes -- BAO and SNIa -- we obtain a CMB-independent constraint on curvature: $Omega_{K,0} = 0.0041,_{-0.0504}^{+0.0500}$. We find no Bayesian evidence that the flat concordance model can be rejected. In addition we show that the sound horizon at decoupling is $r_{rm d} = 144.57 pm 2.34 ; {rm Mpc}$, in agreement with its measurement from CMB anisotropies. As a consequence, the late-time Universe is compatible with flat $Lambda$CDM and a standard sound horizon, leading to a small value of $H_{0}$, {em without} assuming any CMB information. Clustering Ratio measurements produce the only low-redshift clustering data set that is not in disagreement with the CMB, and combining the two data sets we obtain $Omega_{K,0}= -0.023 pm 0.010$. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2206.03059v3
