No matter how we define the edge, the special requirements for use in harsh environments drive unique product decisions. This episode of Utilizing Tech, brought to you by Solidigm, features Alistair Bradbrook, founder of Antillion, discussing edge servers with Jeniece Wnorowski and Stephen Foskett. It pays to start with the intended outcome, defining the solution based on customer needs rather than with the technology at hand. This is especially true at the edge, where unique requirements for mobility, power, ruggedness, and manageability drive novel configurations. When it comes to defense applications, AI is driving greater collection of data at the edge, yet connectivity is often inconsistent, driving increasing processing power. Yet the current CPUs can often handle inferencing in edge use cases, especially when the rest of the server, including storage, can handle high data transfer rates. Edge computers have always needed more storage capacity, and the latest SSDs can bring incredible amounts in a small form factor. Antillion is also a leader in conduction cooling, bringing liquid and immersion cooled devices to market for demanding applications. They are also working to bring disaggregated servers to market using CXL technology, a topic covered in detail on season 4 of this podcast. The edge is all about constraints, and this limitation drives incredible innovation.Guest:Alistair Bradbrook is the Founder and COO of Antilion. In this episode, I talked to Hesh Fekry from CXL about the evolving relationship between Product and Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO). How are these once-separate disciplines are increasingly overlapping in scope, mindset, and execution? The conversation touches on the historical separation of CRO from Product, the shift towards experimentation as a more fitting term, and how AI and new tools are enabling professionals to bridge skill gaps faster than ever before.Key Takeaways:CRO & Product Have Always Been Similar: While traditionally seen as separate roles, both disciplines focus on user insights, problem-solving, and optimizing user flows. The Issue with the CRO Label: CRO as a term has long been tied to a narrow metric-focused approach (conversion rates), but its scope has expanded far beyond that.Experimentation as the New CRO: The rebranding of CRO towards experimentation reflects the broader impact CRO professionals have, including retention, monetization, and pricing strategies.AI is Accelerating the Shift: New AI-driven tools make it easier to fill skill gaps, allowing professionals to be more T-shaped and take on cross-functional responsibilities.CRO Should Be Involved from Day One: Rather than stepping in after a product is built, CRO principles should be applied from the earliest stages to validate assumptions and de-risk decisions.Product and CRO are Learning from Each Other: It's not just CRO learning from Product—it's a continuous loop where both disciplines borrow and refine each other's methodologies.Notable Quotes:

How should optimizers approach experimentation in B2B vs. B2C? Is it truly that different, where it's a skillset that is specialized? Or is there a standard process that can be adopted across both.... with SOME nuance, but really you can be an expert in both at the same time. Shiva Manjunath enlisted the help of Carlos "The Selfie King" Trujillo, who JUST taught a course on CRO for Ecommerce Growth, to discuss this. We netted out basically saying "there aren't any major differences in process." However, there are some nuances worth exploring which can strengthen how you approach B2B vs B2C in CRO, specifically around psychology of users, differences in metrics (and test success), and research methods used. This week is NVIDIA GTC, or as Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman called it "the Woodstock of AI". There's been a lot of discussion about the ascendant NVIDIA and how they plan on capitalizing on a hot market. NVIDIA unveiled Blackwell, their newest architecture. The chip was named after American mathematician David Blackwell and math is most definitely the strong suit of this product line. It has 208 billion transistors to power a second-generation transformer engine for accelerating inferencing. There is also support for fifth-generation NVLink and NVLink Switch connectivity for GPU clusters with speeds of up to 1.8 terabytes per second of bidirectional throughput, which means Blackwell could process the entire bandwidth of the Internet in just 11 units. Maja Voje is a growth strategy expert who has worked with some of the largest tech companies in the world. Through her consulting, she realised that there was a problem holding companies back from product/market fit. Unable to find a playbook to guide companies to the promised land, she decided to research and write one herself. We chatted about the book and some of the themes within it. Episode highlights: 1. 95% of startups will not survive, but you can work together to beat the odds It's not normally a bad product that's the problem. There are a zillion reasons for startup failure, but beating the odds is not a product management or a sales or marketing problem. We have to work cross-functionally, join forces and work together to align the company around success. 2. Product/market fit is more than just delivering value, but being able to build a sustainable business Traditional definitions of product/market fit focus on whether you can deliver value to a specific market segment, but it's important to bring other dimensions into play, such as the most effective business model and people's willingness to pay. You have to capture enough value to build a sustainable business. 3. It's essential to pick a niche, define your ideal customers, and stick to the plan It's really easy for early startup founders to try to go wide and fix everyone's problems, but this is generally a mistake. It's important to maintain discipline, be strategic, and realise that not all opportunities are created equal. You don't have to make a sale at all costs. 4. You're probably not charging enough for your solution, but your customers aren't going to price it for you Founders sometimes fall prey to product imposter syndrome, where they fail to extract fair value from their customers because they're not sure the product is good enough, or feel bad asking for money. We need money! But, don't expect your customers to just tell you a fair price. It's important to do decent pricing research. 5. We can learn a lot from "special ops" thinking Business science has matured over the last couple of hundred years, but there are timeless principles from military strategy that can help us succeed. Pitting small resources against larger competition, being nimble, responding to change and executing fast can help us succeed in a crowded marketplace. Check out "Go-To-Market Strategist" "In Growth and Marketing, we were taught how the “big tech” companies grew to their heights more than a decade ago. They had bigger budgets, teams, and global talent. Markets were less saturated. Customers were more excited about innovation. You need a different playbook for GTM. One that applies to bootstrap startups, clever leaders in innovative companies, and independent innovators. So I went on a journey. I devoted a year of my life to interviewing 54 experts from companies such as: Hubspot, Miro, Figma, Metabase, CXL, and many more to ask them to share their “go to market” advice that will most securely and successfully guide you to product-market fit." Hyperscale-inspired technology is everywhere in enterprise IT, from Kubernetes to S3 to OCP, but these technologies may not be applicable. This episode of On-Premise IT features Cloud Field Day 18 delegates Allyson Klein, Eric Wright, and Nathan Bennett discussing the cloud gap with Stephen Foskett. Looking at AI, we see a very different deployment model in hyperscale cloud as opposed to enterprise cloud, with this gap in technology, implementation, and talent widening. One impact of the needs of hyperscalers is an increased focus on sustainability, specifically energy consumption. We should also consider how the hyperscale use case distorts the development of technology, which is obvious in CXL, GPUs, and networking technologies. Looking at Cloud Field Day, we see that many of these companies are attempting to bridge this gap, connecting hyperscale cloud technology to the enterprise. This is what makes the event so interesting! © Gestalt IT, LLC for Gestalt IT: Mind the Gap Between Hyperscale and Enterprise IT

The storage industry is increasingly focused on memory rather than traditional storage, and this reflects an architectural shift in the compute stack. This episode of On-Premise IT focuses on the new storage stack, which now includes memory, with Andy Banta, Jim Jones, Vuong Pham, and Stephen Foskett, all of whom are attending Storage Field Day 26 and SNIA's Storage Developer Conference. The difference between memory and storage was historically based on the technology at hand, but these lines are blurring. The latest systems can address storage and memory in very similar ways, and can apply advanced data management techniques to memory as well as storage. NVMe, NAND flash, CXL, and persistent memory technologies are blurring the lines, and the latest developments in software, as highlighted at SNIA's SDC, bring new capabilities. As memory becomes more like storage, what was once primary storage has a new job to perform further down in the hierarchy focused on data management, ransomware, and data protection. © Gestalt IT, LLC for Gestalt IT: Primary Storage is Becoming Secondary Storage
