In this podcast, I interview Ray O'Farrell, Executive Vice President and leader of the Cloud-Native Apps Business Unit at VMware. In his current role, Ray will envision and extend the company's strategy and operating model for delivering the Kubernetes platform of the future. Prior to August 2019, Ray served as executive vice president and chief technology officer, where his main focus areas were to ensure VMware's long-term technology leadership through research and innovation programs, with the primary goal of positively impacting and shaping the future of VMware, its ecosystem and its customers. Prior to his role as Chief Technology Officer, Ray co-led the Software-Defined Data Center Division comprising the vSphere, networking, management, and storage businesses and was responsible for the division's strategy, business, and product planning and engineering execution. Ray joined VMware to lead the ESX Storage team during the early development of the ESX platform. He helped build a large ecosystem of partners in storage and helped expand the portfolio, which today includes products such as VMFS (Virtual Machine File System) and VMware vSAN. During his tenure at VMware, Ray built and managed a global R&D organization and held engineering responsibilities across the entire VMware portfolio. His responsibilities spanned management of all of the components of VMware's flagship vSphere and suite products, including core compute, networking, storage, and Cloud management. O'Farrell also spearheaded the Dell Technologies IoT division. Ray has over 20 years of software engineering and product delivery experience. Before VMware, he developed and shipped development tools and operating systems for real-time, embedded, and DSP systems at a number of companies including Industrial and Scientific Imaging (Ireland), Ashling Microsystems (Ireland), Improv Systems (United States), and Microtec/Mentor-Graphics (United States). Ray holds a bachelor's of engineering in electronics and a master's of engineering in computer science, both from the University of Limerick in Ireland. I hope you enjoy my interview with Ray!

I recently read a blog post from a storage vendor attempting to make the case that HCI (Hyper-converged Infrastructure) is not a good fit for healthcare. They used their strategic partner's HCI solution, VMware VSAN as the example, but tried to apply their reasoning to all HCI. My first thought was to wonder what Nutanix's hundreds of happy healthcare customers would think of such an argument. I often meet with customers who make the case to ME on why Nutanix is a great fit for their life-critical applications.I'll highlight some of those reasons in this post. And because I'm familiar with the author and his background, I'll assume that he was writing about the healthcare provider market, and not payors, pharma, or some other sub-market. So, my comments will also be focused on HCI and healthcare providers.Host: Andy WhitesideCo-host: Harvey GreenCo-host: Jirah CoxGuest: Dave Weber

IT Best Practices: Intel Manufacturing factories rely on advanced technology for smooth 24/7 operation. Each factory includes two data centers with hundreds of servers to manage materials, equipment automation, process control, inventory, analytics, and more. Manufacturing IT recently built a separate and completely virtual integration environment for Intel’s Non-volatile Memory Solution Group (NSG) factory. This offered an opportunity to introduce Intel Optane SSDs as cache tier on I/O-intensive workloads to reduce the number of disk groups required. Whether running applications, websites, databases, file servers, or other services, storage performance is often the most important factor in delivering high-performing business solutions. And higher disk throughput is key to achieving performance. We targeted web, application, and database servers using common factory workloads and the results were outstanding. Testing revealed that two disk groups performed as well as three and write-intensive workloads performed even better. We compared automation system use cases involving defect analysis application servers and database servers on a virtualized platform with Intel Optane storage media against systems with NAND SSD (All-Flash) systems. With nearly 200 physical servers hosted in the integration environment, the results gave us confidence to virtualize most factory integration compute environments with servers that simulate the factory setting before applying changes in production.

Pratap joined VMware in 2000 as a member of the technical staff (MTS)and has been a key player in their virtual machine (VM) monitor group, contributing to the design of MMU virtualization, paravirtual interfaces design principles, and, more recently, symmetric multiprocessor fault tolerance for virtual machines. In this podcast, Pratap discusses the emergence of virtualization technology, the importance of VM density, VMware’s commitment to continually updating vSphere with the latest Intel Architecture innovations, and how VMware continues to meet the challenges of managing the Edge. Always building on their core value: providing enterprises with the capability to run a large number of virtual machines on a single node. He goes on to discuss the deep collaboration between VMware and Intel and how they continue to work together to tackle complex technology problems and come up with innovative solutions. In the past 10 years, they have worked together to optimize VMware software on various Intel Architecture features, including, most recently, Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory, resulting in a revolutionary technology that enables virtual machines to be more efficient and able to run bigger programs on a single node. He discusses how VMware and Intel continue to engage with the Open Source community to drive standards and optimize current and future technologies. Pratap also talks about how increased core density and memory utilization are going to transform virtualization from the edge to the cloud. This means that businesses will be able to run more VM’s with larger CPU’s that use larger amounts of memory—all on one node. This is enormously efficient. One of the key reasons Hyper Converged Infrastructure (HCI) powered by VMware vSAN is so successful with customers is that it gives them the choice of a wide range of supported hardware platforms and choice of the latest technologies—both of which do not simply happen by chance. This week we spoke with two key members of the vSAN ReadyLabs team, Sr Product Manager Biswa Bhattacharjee and Engineering Director for vSAN, Kathryn Vandiver. Introduction to VMware vSAN ReadyLabs vSAN ReadyLabs engineering is responsible for ensuring that the ReadyNode hardware meets the demands of vSAN without compromising data availability, data integrity and product performance; that vSAN algorithms leverage the latest technological advancements in the hardware space; that development efforts go hand in hand in joint planning with all major OEM partners; and finally, that the vSAN engineering team leverages cross-OEM’s relationships to drive the resolution of hardware related issues while building future ReadyNode roadmaps for vSAN. Every ReadyNode is unique based on the combination of firmware, driver, and devices. The vSAN ReadyLabs team partners with OEM vendors to outline the latest hardware trends and roadmaps. Together we do risk assessment, create tests, debug issues, perform root cause corrective action of certification failures, and guide development of vSAN capabilities accordingly. Once a ReadyNode is through this exhaustive process and fully certified, it is ready for mission-critical use by customers and chances of hitting potential issues have been minimized. This allows customers to purchase and deploy a vSAN ReadyNode with confidence knowing that it has gone through the certification process of vSAN ReadyLabs and that they can call VMware support should they face any issues with a certified system.
