After launching Wasabi Technologies, a successful cloud storage company, founder and CEO David Friend was ready to scale the venture rapidly. The company had focused primarily on direct sales, but an opportunity to pivot toward channel sales was on the horizon. However, making this pivot would mean changing its sales, marketing, and staffing strategies dramatically, and effectively veering the company away from its already successful course. Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer Lou Shipley joins Brian Kenny to discuss the case, “Wasabi Technologies” and the questions Friend wrestled with: Was channel sales the right play for the burgeoning cloud storage provider? If so, how should it best be implemented? They also explore ideas connected to Shipley's new book, Unlikely Entrepreneurs.

AI Cost Volatility Forces MSPs to Rethink Cloud, On-Prem, and Hybrid Governance

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2026 12:07

The episode outlines a structural shift in the managed services landscape, moving from technology stack standardization toward continuous governance as the primary product. Increasing AI adoption is driving volatility in both hardware costs and cloud billing, expanding the complexity and risk profile that MSPs must manage. Companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Akamai are actively shaping this shift by revising product rollouts and pushing for workload placement strategies that prioritize cost, control, and risk mitigation rather than platform ideology. The core evidence highlighted is that volatile AI-related costs are directly impacting endpoint and cloud spend, undermining the traditional set-it-and-forget-it approach. IDC has revised global PC shipment expectations downward by 11.3% for 2026, citing memory shortages and supply chain disruptions, which is driving up hardware refresh costs and complicating standardization efforts. Wasabi reports that 48% of cloud storage budgets are being consumed by fees instead of capacity, while 72% of organizations now operate with hybrid storage strategies. These developments are increasing the need for contractual controls and workload governance to protect MSP margins. Supporting developments reinforce the market's pivot toward governance. Microsoft's rollback of Copilot integration and the US government's warnings after the Stryker incident emphasize the operational risk of rapid or unmanaged AI deployments. Akamai's expansion of AI inference to thousands of edge locations and OpenAI's launch of smaller, cost-targeted models underscore the growing significance of workload placement and model selection as ongoing operational decisions. According to a Westcon-Comstor survey, nearly a third of MSPs are already repositioning themselves as hybrid advisors, reflecting this market adjustment. For MSPs and IT leaders, the implications are clear: traditional fixed-fee models that bundle variable costs are now a liability, absorbing unpriced volatility as AI usage increases. Sustainable operation requires MSPs to separate governance from consumption within contracts and clearly define policies for workload placement, spend guardrails, and permission controls. The episode indicates that successful providers will be those who document, enforce, and price for governance, while those who treat hybrid as a generic technology support issue will face margin erosion and increased risk exposure. 00:00 AI Cost Shock 03:18 Placement Is Strategy 06:06 Margin Splits Here 08:54 Why Do We Care?  Supported by:  JumpCloud  HaloPSA

I've always seen/heard the parallel between reggae and house music—namely, the Steppers vs. 4-On-The-Floor groove, and have been drawn to that fusion of the two. Back in 2002, I'd slapped a King Tubby sample over a house beat, and it was a revelation to me (I can fuse this) that song that became Journey To The Center Of The Dub. The King Tubby sample was removed, but the idea remained. On the other side of the pond, in the UK and across Europe, this style was already established and in the clubs. I can't profess to more than a surface-level knowledge, but after sifting through a lot of tracks, I put together this playlist of songs that I enjoyed. I encourage you to share some of your favourite house reggae tracks in the comments—include a YouTube link if possible. As a contributor to projects like Bitcoin Core, Wasabi Wallet, BTCPay Server, JoinMarket, Lightning Network, Bisq, Angor, White Noise, and Amethyst. In this episode, Max shares his journey from Austrian economics into Bitcoin privacy, recounting how tools like CoinJoins, Wasabi, and the Taproot upgrade push Bitcoin closer to true anonymity. We explore the battle between fiat and freedom, the broken incentives of inflation and war, and why opting into Bitcoin is both a moral imperative and a form of resistance. Max also introduces Nostr as the communications layer for a censorship-resistant future, explains the axioms of human action, argumentation ethics, and resistance, and highlights why he believes we now have the technological weapons to end modern financial slavery in our lifetime.► If you got value, please like, comment, share, follow and support my work. Send us a textIn this refreshingly candid episode of Joey Pinz Discipline Conversations, Joey sits down with Drew Schlussel, Director of Technical Product Marketing at Wasabi Technologies, to talk about simplifying cloud storage and scaling the right way. Recorded live at Pax8 Beyond 2025, this episode cuts through the jargon and gets to the core of what partners truly want: predictability, transparency, and performance that actually delivers.Drew breaks down Wasabi's flat-fee storage model, its refusal to charge for egress or API calls, and why they've ditched tiered pricing entirely. It's not just a technical decision — it's a cultural one. He dives into the psychology behind data usage, vendor relationships, and what it means to truly earn the trust of MSPs.The conversation also covers why Wasabi is doubling down on channel-only sales, how the company avoids fear-based marketing, and Drew's personal perspective on building tech brands that scale without selling out.If you're in the MSP space and tired of the nickel-and-dime model from traditional hyperscalers, this episode will feel like a much-needed reality check.
