He is waiting for him to come home, and discusses music with Lord Henry's wife, Victoria. When his friend finally comes home, Dorian eagerly tells him that he has fallen in love. The girl, called Sibyl Vane, is an actress who plays all of Shakespeare's heroines in cheap London theatre. Dorian goes to explain that he came upon the place while acting on Lord Henry's advice to "know everything about life." Despite the look of the place, he felt compelled to go in, and found everything to be foul except for Sibyl, who instantly charmed him. Several trips to the theatre later, the foul owner asked Dorian if he wished to meet Sibyl, who was charmed by the attentions of such a handsome gentleman. She refers to him as Prince Charming. Amused by this development, Lord Henry agrees to go to the theatre with Dorian the next day to see the girl play in Romeo and Juliet. Basil is to join them, and has also sent his portrait to Dorian. After leaving, Lord Henry muses on his influence over the boy, fascinated at the psychology of other human beings. He then dresses and goes out to dine. He comes home late to find a telegram from Dorian announcing his engagement to Sibyl Vane.

Chapter 1:Summary of The Picture of Dorian Gray"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a novel by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1890. It presents a moral tale of the corrupting influence of art and beauty when misused for selfish purposes. The protagonist, Dorian Gray, is a strikingly handsome young man living in Victorian England who becomes the subject of a portrait by artist Basil Hallward. Captivated by Dorian's beauty, Basil believes his art reaches its pinnacle in capturing Dorian's image.Under the influence of the cynical and hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian becomes enchanted by the notion that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Lord Henry's worldview profoundly impacts Dorian, and he wishes for a supernatural agreement where his portrait would age and bear the scars of his experiences, while he himself would remain forever young and beautiful.Miraculously, Dorian's wish is granted. As he spirals into a life of debauchery, excessive indulgence, and moral decay, his physical appearance remains untouched by time and vice, while his portrait grotesquely transforms, reflecting his true inner condition. This divergence between his unchanged appearance and the increasing disfigurement of the portrait symbolizes the split between his public image and hidden corruption.Dorian's actions grow progressively darker, including manipulating countless individuals and indirectly causing deaths. The culmination of his moral descent is implicated in the murder of Basil Hallward after Basil confronts him about his degenerate lifestyle and begs him to reform. As Dorian grows older, the burden of his hidden wickedness becomes unbearable. Finally, in a fit of desperation, he decides to destroy the portrait, the only evidence of his twisted inner self, believing this will free him. In doing so, he inadvertently kills himself with the same knife he used to kill Basil, and his servants find an old, withered, and unrecognizable corpse. Conversely, the portrait returns to its original form, depicting Dorian as the beautiful and innocent young man he once was.Through this story, Wilde explores themes of aestheticism, moral duplicity, and the consequences of living a life devoted solely to pleasure, with a sharp critique on the Victorian society of his time.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Picture of Dorian Gray"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde is a philosophical novel centered around the themes of aestheticism, moral duplicity, and the nature of beauty. Here's an outline of key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas in the novel: Key Plot Points1. Introduction of Dorian Gray: Dorian Gray is introduced as a young, handsome man who becomes the subject of a portrait by painter Basil Hallward. Basil is fascinated by Dorian's beauty and believes that Dorian is his artistic inspiration.2. Influence of Lord Henry: Dorian becomes influenced by Lord Henry Wotton, a cynical and hedonistic aristocrat who espouses a philosophy of self-indulgence. Lord Henry's worldview deeply affects Dorian, leading him to wish that the portrait would age instead of him.3. The Cursed Portrait: Dorian's wish comes true. As he pursues a life of excess and moral decadence, his physical appearance remains youthful and unchanging, while the portrait ages and records every sin.4. Sibyl Vane: Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a talented actress, whose performances enrapture him. However, when Sibyl decides to quit acting for the sake of their love, Dorian cruelly rejects her as she no longer entertains him, leading Sibyl to take her own life.5. Dorian's Downfall: Over the years, Dorian's actions become increasingly corrupt and even criminal. He remains outwardly young and beautiful, but his portrait becomes grotesque. Dorian hides the painting, and his fear of exposure...

In this chapter, we become more intimately acquainted with Sibyl Vane, a young actress of singular enchantment, radiant in the flush of her impassioned youth and in love with Dorian Gray - her fleeting Prince Charming. Burdened with poverty, but lavish in spirit, Sibyl's love for Dorian is only rivalled by her passion for art. Her mother, Mrs. Vane, steeped in hardened realism, sees in their benefactor, Mr. Isaacs, a ladder, not to love, but to monetary salvation. Jim Vane, Sibyl's coarse but kind-hearted sibling, a protective figure painted in rugged shades of brotherly love, prepares to embark for Australia as their mother toils under the weight of rampant financial concerns. Submerged in his role of the protective brother, he casts a suspicious and resentful eye towards the anonymous gentleman who has ensnared his sister's heart. In an impassioned exchange, Sibyl and Jim's relationship unravels with affection, tempered by the sober hues of apprehension. This clash of young love and wary caution sets the stage for further turmoil in our torrid tale.  In this pivotal chapter, listeners, Wilde paints the thin line that separates innocent infatuation from the indignity of exploration, showcasing the time-honored human struggle between aspirations of love and the realities of existence. Loaded with emotional turmoil, this segment of our tale is woven with the threads of love, doubt, and ambition, unfurling the deeper dimensions of our characters.

We are drawn into the opulence of Lord Henry's Mayfair library, a room teeming with comfort served in a visual feast of high panelled wainscoting, cream-coloured frieze, and a carpet strewn with silk Persian rugs. Here, Dorian Gray reclines, awaiting the fashionably late Lord Henry. Someone arrives, but it is not Lord Henry. Instead, it is Lady Henry, a woman who defies conventionality with her tempest-dressed appearance and vague forget-me-not eyes. She is perpetually in love but rarely loved, an unfortunate paradox that has allowed her to retain all her illusions. As they exchange pleasantries, Harry arrives, and Lady Henry has to dash off to her promised drive with the duchess. Harry, seizing the opportunity, advises Dorian on the sentimentality of women, the disappointment of marriage, and the uniqueness of love. Their conversation unfolds into a confession from Dorian: he is in love with an actress named Sibyl Vane. Played out on the stage of London's east end, Sibyl morphs between characters, casting a spell on Dorian with her devastating performances and personification of the world's great heroines. Her art, her personality, place her as an enigma to the ordinary women of their society. As Dorian Gray departs for his evening's theatre visit, Lord Henry contemplates the transformative power he has over young Dorian, a living work of art, his creation. His mind weaves thoughts around the mysteries of soul and body, the errant nature of experience, and the intriguing possibility of this complex passion for Sibyl Vane.

Fans worship his every bon mot and admire his bravery to live his life on his own terms. He died in 1900 at the age of 46 but his legacy looms large to this day.  Originally published in Lippincott's Magazine in 1890, the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray was created out of a dinner conversation between Wilde and Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Dorian Gray is the subject of a painting by Basil Hallward who one can say has a bit of a crush on Gray. Being a libertine, Gray wants to stay beautiful forever and is granted his wish.  The portrait remains in his attic and ages as he cavorts around Victorian England which scandalized the world back when it was first published. The official Wilde-approved version is at the Morgan Library in New York City. It features his thoughts on sex, sexual desire, and “art for art's sake.”  The story has been adapted dozens of times over the years, but the 1945 version directed by Albert Lewin is the most critically praised. The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - Book 1, Part 1 Title: The Picture of Dorian Gray Overview: The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde. A shorter novella-length version was published in the July 1890 issue of the American periodical Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. A revised and extended edition was published in April 1891. Revisions include changes in character dialogue as well as the addition of the preface, more scenes and chapters, and Sibyl Vane's brother, James Vane. The story revolves around a portrait of Dorian Gray painted by Basil Hallward, a friend of Dorian's and an artist infatuated with Dorian's beauty. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton and is soon enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied amoral experiences while staying young and beautiful; all the while, his portrait ages and visually records every one of Dorian's sins. Wilde's only novel was subject to much controversy and criticism in its time but has come to be recognized as a classic of gothic literature. In this extra episode which is completely in english I have the honour to have the Estonian band Sibyl Vane as guests. We met them when my band VNTER was playing Live At Heart and had a chat.  It turned out that they came in fourth place in the Estonian Eurovision with the song ”Thousand Words” which is played last in this episode.  Hear them talk about touring Estonia, playing Live at heart four times, writing a hit, finding a new drummer and so much more. Like, share and follow White limo rocks podcast. http://whitelimorocks.libsyn.com
