Dealing with False Teachers(1 Timothy 1:1-17) Message SlidesInterpretation - J.I. PackerFaith, Truth, and Love - Walter LiefeldFor the bulletin in PDF form, click here. Introduction: Salutation and Greeting (1:1-2)• Paul the Apostle - passing on faithful ministry • God our Savior - not Artemis or Caesar• Timothy - the next generation of ministryProblem: The False Teachers' Perversion of the Law (1:3-7)False teachers are full of confidence, arrogance, and error.• False teachers focus on fantasies rather than faith (1:3-5).• False teachers use the Scripture but do not use it correctly (1:6-7).Solution: The Proper Use of the Law (1:8-11)The function of the law is to convict sinners, not guide saints.• The proper use of the law is not to guide believers (1:8-9a).• The proper use of the law is to convict sinners of sin (1:9b-10). • The proper use of the law is compatible with the gospel (1:11).Priority: The Centrality of Grace for the Ministry of Paul (1:12-17)The grace of God manifest in Christ Jesus is the epicenter of the gospel. • The grace of God allows us to serve Him with gratitude (1:12).• The abundant grace of God flows to sinful people (1:13-14).• The gospel truth is that Christ Jesus came to save sinners (1:15-16). • The grace of the gospel leads to the praise of God (1:17).God has designed the church to be a stronghold of truth and champion of the grace of God in the gospel. Here is wisdom for the local church in every generation and in every place. Let no one say that scripture is out of date. Calvin, when dedicating his commentary to the Duke of Somerset in 1556 called this letter"highly relevant to our times". All these years later, we can make the same claim. Away From the Presence Jonah 1:1-16 Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. God is Present EverywhereWe Forget to Live Like God is Present EverywhereGod is Gracious and Merciful, Slow to Anger, and Abounding in Steadfast LoveDiscussion Questions1. The main lesson we learn is that God is present everywhere. Yet there are some places we would probably prefer not to go (even if God is with us). Where would you least/most want to be if you were alone: in the ocean, on a mountain, or in space? Any other places?2. Jonah tries to flee from the presence of the Lord (1:2-3), but he is unable because God is present everywhere. What are some indications in the book that reveal God is present everywhere?3. Do you have any challenges with thinking about God being present everywhere? Is this a difficult or a relatively simple concept for you? Explain.4. Have someone read Psalm 139:7-10. This passage talks about God being present everywhere and how this should encourage us. Why should we be encouraged by the idea that God is present everywhere? Have you ever been especially encouraged by this truth?5. The idea that God is present everywhere can also be humbling. Explain why. Have you ever been convicted by the thought that God is present everywhere and knows everything we do and everything we think?6. Explain how Jonah can have correct thinking in 1:9 that God is present everywhere and yet he tries to flee from God's presence. How can his thinking and living be inconsistent? What are some ways your thinking and living can be inconsistent?7. The story is ultimately about God's grace shown to Nineveh but also shown to Jonah. What are some ways we see God's grace toward Jonah in this story? What are some lessons we might apply to our lives from this?8. Jesus thinks of the story of Jonah as pointing to Him when he says, “something greater than Jonah is here” (Matt 12:41). What are some examples of how Jesus succeeds where Jonah fails? "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27 Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE! Fr Joseph shares with us about how he got involved in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and a few of the parallels he sees between CGS and Ignatian Spirituality. Fr. Joseph Hill, SJ was born in Phoenix, AZ, raised in a Catholic family with his three brothers. At nine years old his family moved to England, where he attended Catholic schools and then the University of Oxford, earning a BA in theology in 2003. In 2004 he entered the Jesuit seminary in south Louisiana. Taking religious vows after two years, he was sent to study philosophy at Fordham University in New York, graduating with an MA in 2009. He then spent three years teaching theology at Jesuit High School, New Orleans. In 2012 he was sent to study theology at FAJE in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, earning a MA in 2014. Then he returned to Boston, earning a MEd at Boston College in 2015. He was ordained a Catholic priest on June 13th, 2015. For one year he worked at Parroquia San Ignacio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and served as chaplain of Academia San Ignacio parish elementary school. It was in Puerto Rico that he became familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. With the help of two excellent catechists and the school leaders, they implemented CGS Level I in the school. In August 2016 he moved to St. Louis, where he taught and worked in campus ministry at St. Louis University High School. During this time Fr. Hill, SJ completed a Doctor of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. Since July, 2021 he has lived in Tampa, FL, working as a Province vocation promoter. Joseph Hill's presentation, “CGS and Ignatian Spirituality,” as well as “The Metaphysical Child: To Live and Move and Have Their Being,” “Observations Serving Toddlers in the Atrium,” and “Memories of Sofia and Gianna with the Children.” These presentations would make wonderful topics for catechist retreat days, parent education sessions, and other continuing education for those who serve children. The Religious Potential of the Child is not a “how-to” book, complete with lesson plans and material ideas. Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. The work of many hands has combined to bring this release to life as an audiobook. We all know that the character interactions, our fellow passengers, and the community that has resulted from Galactic Starcruiser are the things that we all cherish the most about the experience. But there was more too - - - the tangible aspects of the voyage such as the scent of the Atrium or the tastes of the food or even the sounds that the door to the Engineering room mad. These memories are what we look back on in this episode in honor of the 3rd anniversary of the first voyage. We were surprised at how much we viscerally remembered.Heroes of the Halcyon on InstagramTheme Music ("Digital Discourse") by Yellow BarrelSend your email to heroesofthehalcyon@gmail.com - we'd love to hear from you about your journeys, episode suggestions, or just to say hi!

The Surpassing WorthPhilippians 3:1-11Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. Knowing Christ means I have a new identity (vv.1-6) Knowing Christ means I have new values (vv.7-11) Justification - Righteousness (v.9) Sanctification - Power (v.10) Glorification - Hope (v.11) Home Church Questions1. Our passage is about knowing Christ. How would you explain to someone what it means to know Christ? What are some ways knowing Jesus is similar/different from other relationships we have? 2. In Phil 3:1-6, we learn that knowing Christ means we have a new identity. How should a person's identity change when he/she comes to know Christ? What are some ways a person's identity might stay the same? What has this looked like for you? 3. In vv.5-6, Paul gives a list of reasons why he would have more reason for confidence in the flesh than others. If you were to have confidence in the flesh, what are some items that would be on your list? Do you wrestle with putting too much confidence in the flesh? Explain. 4. In Phil 3:7-11, we learn that knowing Christ means we have new values. In vv.7-8, he says the things he used to consider as gain he now considers as loss. What are some of the “gains” in your life that you consider to be valuable? Are there any “gains” in your life you should re-evaluate so that you value them in a healthier way? 5. Paul says he considers everything as loss compared with the surpassing value of knowing Christ (v.8). What does he mean and how can he say this? Can you say this? 6. Jesus has surpassing worth because we can be justified and made right with God through Him (v.9). Was there a time in your life when you were moved by this truth that God provides the righteousness He demands? 7. Jesus has surpassing worth because we can experience the power of his resurrection even in our sufferings (v.10). How can we identify with Jesus when we suffer so we experience this power? Have you experienced this? 8. Jesus has surpassing worth because we experience the hope of future resurrection through Him (v.11). Why does having this hope of future glorification motivate us to value Jesus now? Pray for the Unreached: The Ansari are a Sunni Muslim group in India, historically weavers and textile sellers, now involved in various businesses. Many live in poverty and face illiteracy, though some have contributed to education and politics. Known for their hospitality, they offer opportunities for believers to share the gospel. Recent efforts have seen some Ansari families come to Christ, but they remain largely unreached. Pray for Indian believers to reach out with love and share the gospel with Ansari families and leaders, revealing to them the love and hope only offered through Christ.FinancesWeekly Budget 35,297Giving For 02/09 36,524Giving For 02/16 19,506YTD Budget 1,164,806Giving 1,152,806 OVER/(UNDER) (12,000)Men's Muster 2025 A car out of alignment is harder to steer, wears down faster, and wastes fuel. Why is it easier to relax in your obedience when you are alone? Or when you are facing a stranger who frustrates you?Paul continues in verse 12 with how they are to continue in their obedience, with “fear and trembling.” What is the “fear” that would cause you to “tremble” about disobedience in those situations?Verse 13 conveys an active participation between you and God that results in spiritual growth. At what times and situations do you find your will to obey the weakest? What does this passage teach you to do in these situations? In verses 14 and 15, Paul relates that living as a Christian blamelessly and without fault (NIV) means doing everything without complaining or arguing. When and with whom is it easy to disobey this command? Why does doing everything without complaining or arguing make you “shine as lights” in the dark places of this world?Shining as lights in a warped and crooked generation requires that you “hold firmly to the word of life” (verse 16).
