Podcasts by Series Level One Book Study Level Two Book Study “You will find God when you find your true self, and you find yourself when you find God.” Henri Nouwen "The purpose of the contemplative life is the perfection of love.” St Thomas Aquinas “Listening is so much like loving, that most people can't tell the difference.” Today, Autumn Domingue joins us again on the podcast to explore the contemplative method—what it is and how it fits into the history of the Church, as well as its place within the rich tradition of CGS. She also guides us through practical tools for becoming a more contemplative listener and responder. Autumn Domingue is a spiritual director and life coach who delights in walking alongside others as they seek deeper meaning and purpose. For the past twelve years, she has supported individuals in her private practice. With over thirty years of experience as a catechist and formation leader, and as a new instructor at Aquinas Institute of Theology, Autumn is equally at home nurturing children in the atrium and guiding graduate students in their study of spirituality. Autumn's website Spiritual Direction 101 Thank you to all our members and our donors who have given to the 2025-26 Annual Appeal and Tina Lillig Memorial Fund. Your donations make it possible for CGSUSA to expand formation opportunities, give mission courses, invest in technology, create catechist and parent resources and publications, and offer many wonderful events that build our catechist community. All of these initiatives help us serve children with love and generosity. The revenue generated from membership fees covers about 55 percent of the cost of the benefits of membership, so philanthropy is essential to delivering excellent support to catechists, ministry leaders, families, and children. The Religious Potential of the Child is not a “how-to” book, complete with lesson plans and material ideas. Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. The work of many hands has combined to bring this release to life as an audiobook. Forgiveness, Resurrection, and Life1 Corinthians 15Message Slides For The bulletin in PDF form, click here. I believe in . . . the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.HOME CHURCH QUESTIONS1. As we conclude our study through the Apostles' Creed, what has been a key takeaway you have found helpful? Has your view of creeds changed? Are there any new ways you have used the creed or plan to use the creed? 2. We believe in the forgiveness of sins (see 1 Cor 15:3 & 17). To experience forgiveness of sins, we have to be able to recognize our sin. What are some examples of how people ignore or downplay their sins? What are some examples of ways you ignore or downplay your sins? Why is it important we rightly understand our sin? 3. We talked about learning how to “show yourself the receipt” to be reminded there is forgiveness of sin. What are some ways you show yourself the receipt, and when have you needed to do this? What are some key verses we can use to remind ourselves of God's forgiveness? 4. We believe in the resurrection of the body. What passage stands out to you from 1 Cor 15 that addresses our future resurrection? Explain the passage. 5. What do you look forward to most about your resurrected, glorified body? Why is it important we think rightly about this future resurrection? 6. We believe in life everlasting. If someone were to ask you what eternal life in heaven will be like, how would you answer? How would you respond to someone who is concerned heaven will be missing something we are able to enjoy in this life? Are you concerned about this? 7. One day death will be defeated (see 1 Cor 15:26, 54-57). How should this truth impact the way we live now (see v.58)? In what specific area of your life should you live differently since we know death will be destroyed by Christ?Mission Highlight - The Sansi in India The Sansi people of northern India still bear the weight of a centuries-old stigma from when they were branded as criminals under British rule. Many live in poverty and isolation, mistrustful of outsiders and unaware of the gospel. With low literacy and few resources, they struggle to survive day to day. When you think about the Holy Spirit, what images or ideas come to your mind? What Bible passages are most informative for how you think about the Holy Spirit? 2. Do you think there is more mystery surrounding the Holy Spirit than there is with the Father and the Son? Explain why.3. Ephesians 1:3-14, 2:4-6, and 3:16-17 reveal a close relationship between the Spirit and the Son. Look at these passages (and/or John 16:14) and talk about the nature of this relationship. Based on these passages, how can we know if the Spirit is at work in our lives?4. The 3rd Person of the Trinity is called “Holy” because one of His roles is to make us holy. Ephesians 5:18 refers to this as being “filled with the Spirit.” Explain what this means and how we can know if we are being filled with the Spirit. In what areas of your life can you become more controlled by the Spirit? 5. Ephesians 4:4 says, “there is one body and one Spirit.” Explain the relationship among the Spirit, the church, and unity. What does it look like for us to work for unity in the church? Why is this essential? 6. What is the universal, invisible church? What is the local, visible church? Which of these do you tend to emphasize? Why are both important?Mission Highlight - The Java Pesisir Lor in Indonesia The Java Pesisir Lor are a coastal Javanese sub-ethnic group living along northern Java. He Rose, Ascended, Is Seated, and Will ComeActs 1:1-11Message SlidesOn the third day He rose againHe ascended into heavenHe is seated at the right hand of the FatherAnd He will come to judge the living and the deadHOME CHURCH QUESTIONS1. The previous section of the creed talked about Jesus' suffering and death. This current section talks about His resurrection and the events that followed. What are some of the consequences if Jesus had not risen from the grave? How much of an impact does Jesus' resurrection have in your daily life? 2. We talked about the two states of Christ: humiliation and exaltation. His humiliation involves four steps down: incarnation, suffering, death, and burial. His exaltation involves four steps up: resurrection, ascension, session, and return. Which of these do you tend to think about most/least? Explain why. Which of these should you give more time and attention to? 3. Acts 1:3 says Jesus presented himself alive “by many proofs.” What are some examples of the proofs (you could look at some of the proofs in Luke 24)? What are some lessons we learn from these proofs? For example, why is it significant he ate fish? Or why is it significant he explained the Scriptures? 4. We said it is important to keep Jesus' death and resurrection central in our thinking and in our lives. What are some examples of ways we can do this? 5. Jesus' session at the Father's right hand is an important teaching in the Bible. Do you emphasize Jesus currently sitting at the Father's right hand? Why is it significant that Jesus is at the Father's right hand? (You could refer to Acts 2:32-36 or Heb 8:1 or Rom 8:34.) What impact should this teaching have on our lives now?6. Jesus' second coming is another substantial teaching in the Bible. Do you emphasize Christ's return? Why is it significant that He will return? (You could refer to Acts 10:42 or Acts 17:31 or 2 Tim 4:8.) What impact should this teaching have on our lives now?Mission Highlight - The Khmer in CambodiaThe Khmer are Cambodia's majority people and heirs of the ancient empire seen at Angkor Wat. Most live in rural villages with little access to education, clean water, or healthcare. Their identity is rooted in Buddhism mixed with ancestor and spirit worship, and only a small minority follow Christ. Though Scripture and the JESUS Film exist in Khmer, they still need to see Christ's love through practical help and local believers sharing the gospel with their families and neighbors.FinancesWeekly Budget 34,615Giving For 09/29 27,682Giving For 10/05 33,185YTD Budget 484,615Giving 423,018 OVER/(UNDER) (61,597)The 2025 OCC Season Begins!Operation Christmas Child is a global project of Samaritan's Purse that shares God's love with children in need through gift-filled shoeboxes. What are some examples of suffering you have experienced in your life? It was mentioned that we often expect to live long and not suffer. Do you agree? Why do we think like this? 2. What are some examples of Jesus' suffering throughout His life and at the end of His life (for example, in Mark 15)? Why should it encourage us to consider that Jesus suffered in some of the same ways we suffer? What is a specific example of suffering in your life and how has Jesus experienced something similar? 3. What are some unhelpful or unhealthy responses to someone who is suffering? What are some biblical ways to respond to someone who is suffering? Why is it encouraging to consider that God enters into our broken world and suffers for us? How should this impact the way we think about suffering? 4. What aspects of the crucifixion from Mark 15 (or from the sermon) stand out to you? Explain. 5. One motivation for God sending His Son to die on the cross was to demonstrate His justice and righteousness (see Romans 3:25). Do you tend to think about God's justice as a motive for the cross? Why is it important we keep this in mind? What are some consequences if we don't? 6. The cross both humbles and encourages us at the same time. Do you currently need to be reminded to be humbled because of what your sin required at the cross? Or do you currently need to be encouraged by God's love and what He was willing to provide at the cross? Explain. 7. Imagine you are talking with someone who says he/she believes Jesus died, but this person doesn't believe it matters or makes any difference. How would you explain the meaning of the cross and why it is important in your life?Mission Highlight - The Aid Andhra in IndiaWith a population of over 350,000, the Adi Andhra are a marginalized people group in southern India, primarily speaking Telugu and practicing Hinduism. When you think about Jesus, what are some of the titles, images, or ideas that come to your mind? Where did you learn and develop your view of Jesus? 3. What are some ways we see Jesus' humanity in Luke 1:26-38? What are some other Bible passages that reveal Jesus' humanity? Why should we be encouraged by the fact that Jesus is a human like us? What impact should this make in your life today? 4. What are some ways we see Jesus is God in Luke 1:26-38? What are some other Bible passages that reveal Jesus is God? Why should we be encouraged by the fact that Jesus is God? What impact should this make in your life today? 5. How would you explain to someone the importance of the virgin birth? What are some key truths that are revealed in the virgin birth? 6. Mary responded to this incredible news by saying, “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). In what area of your life is God calling you to be faithful? What would it look like for you to respond like Mary in your life? What does it mean to “fight the good fight of the faith” (v. 12)?• How is this different from fighting for faith vs. fighting with faith? • What doctrinal “fights” are worth engaging in as believers?• Which ones are distractions?2. Paul tells Timothy to “take hold of eternal life” (v. 12).• How can eternal life be something we take hold of now, not just something we receive later?• Look at John 17:3 and answer the question above again.3. Why does he warn so strongly about misplaced hope in riches (vv. 17–19)?• What subtle ways might we put our hope in wealth instead of God?• How can generosity and “being rich in good works” reorient our hearts?4. Paul commands Timothy to “guard the gospel” (vv. 20–21).• What are modern threats to the gospel (inside and outside the church)?• What practical steps can we take personally—and as a group—to “guard” what's been entrusted to us?5. Paul ends his letter with “Grace be with you.”• Why is grace the final word of Paul's pastoral instruction?• How does God's grace empower you to live out these commands—and where do you still struggle to rest in that grace?God designed the church to be a battleground for sound doctrine where people place their hope in God and not riches nd by this experience a taste of eternal life here and now.Pray for the Unreached: The Ad Dharma in IndiaThe Ad Dharmi are a marginalized community of over 1 million in northern India, primarily working in leather-related trades. When you think about God, what are some of the first names, images, or ideas that come to your mind? Where did you learn and develop your view of God? 2. The Bible begins with God creating all things (Gen 1:1). If we start here and understand this, we are well on our way to getting other important parts of the Christian faith. What other important parts of the faith will we fail to grasp if we don't understand this foundational truth? Explain why understanding “God the Creator” is essential for the rest of the Christian faith. 3. God reveals Himself so we can know Who He is and who we are and what He expects of us. However, many people believe in a god very different from the biblical view of God. What are some common ways people you interact with think about God? Talk about some ways you tend to think about God that are different from the biblical view. How can we make sure we are thinking rightly about God? 4. We talked about the importance of making a distinction between the Creator and the creation. What are some key differences between these two? Why is it important to maintain this distinction? What are some of the consequences if we don't make this distinction? Who or what do you tend to value more than the Creator? 5. We can know God as our Father, and we can be adopted and belong to His great family. Which of these powerful truths (related to Fatherhood, family, and adoption) resonates most with you? Why? Are there any other related verses, truths, or experiences you have had that are meaningful to you? 6. When you think about God, do you tend to think of Him more as Almighty or more as Father? Explain why. What steps can we take to make sure we think of God rightly as both Father and Almighty?Mission Highlight - The Acehnese in Indonesia The Acehnese, a devout Muslim people of over 4 million in Indonesia's Aceh province, are known for their strong Islamic identity and adherence to Sharia law. Though officially Muslim, many Dongxiang are marginalized even within the broader Islamic community due to social challenges. Their language has Mongolian roots, and literacy is low, with few fluent in Chinese. Most work as farmers or in traditional rug-making. The gospel has not taken root among them, and there are no known Dongxiang believers. Pray for workers to bring the good news, for hearts to be softened, and for a church planting movement to begin among the Dongxiang.FinancesWeekly Budget 34,615Giving For 07/20 25,941Giving For 07/27 24,467YTD Budget 138,462Giving 129,843 OVER/(UNDER) (8,619)Home Church Launches August 17thHome Church small groups are about building a deep community where we are transformed into the image of Christ and serve a broken world for the sake of the gospel. Hospital at home programs have been around for years but gained popularity during the pandemic. While HaH has long been tailored for adults—mainly seniors—some hospitals are experimenting with programs that allow other patients to receive acute care at home, including Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital which piloted a first-in-the-nation hospital at home program. Stefanie Reed, DO, who serves as the Medical Director of the program, joins host J. Carlisle Larsen to talk more about what they've learned since launching the program and the outcomes of the pilot. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27 Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE! Fr Joseph shares with us about how he got involved in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and a few of the parallels he sees between CGS and Ignatian Spirituality. Fr. Joseph Hill, SJ was born in Phoenix, AZ, raised in a Catholic family with his three brothers. At nine years old his family moved to England, where he attended Catholic schools and then the University of Oxford, earning a BA in theology in 2003. In 2004 he entered the Jesuit seminary in south Louisiana. Taking religious vows after two years, he was sent to study philosophy at Fordham University in New York, graduating with an MA in 2009. He then spent three years teaching theology at Jesuit High School, New Orleans. In 2012 he was sent to study theology at FAJE in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, earning a MA in 2014. Then he returned to Boston, earning a MEd at Boston College in 2015. He was ordained a Catholic priest on June 13th, 2015. For one year he worked at Parroquia San Ignacio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and served as chaplain of Academia San Ignacio parish elementary school. It was in Puerto Rico that he became familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. With the help of two excellent catechists and the school leaders, they implemented CGS Level I in the school. In August 2016 he moved to St. Louis, where he taught and worked in campus ministry at St. Louis University High School. During this time Fr. Hill, SJ completed a Doctor of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. Since July, 2021 he has lived in Tampa, FL, working as a Province vocation promoter. Growing Seeds Become a Growing Seed Donor HERE Growing Seed Donor Form. Access will also be granted to all existing recurring donors as of January 15, 2025. The recordings will be available through June 30, 2026. Be sure to click the checkbox: “Show my support by making this a monthly donation.” In 2024, The United States Association of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd began celebrating 40 years of being an association of catechists who listen to God with children in the United States and around the world. In honor of our 40 years of remaining with children, we are launching a new sustainable giving program at CGSUSA: Growing Seeds. As part of Growing Seeds, your regular, automatic gift is simple and convenient, allowing you to spread your philanthropy over time. It also provides CGSUSA with a more predictable source of income so we can focus on sustaining and supporting the religious life of children and those who serve them. For a minimum gift amount of $15 per month ($180 per year), you will automatically be recognized as a CGSUSA Growing Seeds donor, giving you one year of access to the recordings from Between Memory and Hope: 40th Anniversary Celebration as our way of thanking you for your generosity. Please be sure you are logged in to your CGSUSA Membership account and complete the online giving form. Access to the video recordings is available to Growing Seeds donors until June 2026, at which point we'll have a new gift for you. For less than $5 per week, you will be able to access all the video and audio recordings from the Between Memory and Hope plenary sessions and workshops, including the full recording of Fr. Joseph Hill's presentation, “CGS and Ignatian Spirituality,” as well as “The Metaphysical Child: To Live and Move and Have Their Being,” “Observations Serving Toddlers in the Atrium,” and “Memories of Sofia and Gianna with the Children.” These presentations would make wonderful topics for catechist retreat days, parent education sessions, and other continuing education for those who serve children. AUDIOBOOK: Audiobook – Now Available on Audible CGSUSA is excited to offer you the audio version of The Religious Potential of the Child – 3rd Edition by Sofia Cavalletti, read by Rebekah Rojcewicz!
