Blizzard warnings outside, sonic weather systems inside. Matt and Sam pulled together twelve new tracks that cut through the February haze, from Bruce Springsteen's lightning-fast protest release to Charli XCX's orchestral, slow-burn elegance. The throughline is momentum—how artists old and new push ideas forward, whether by turning up the amps, sharpening the story, or stripping a feeling down to its essential parts. We start with the tradition of the protest song and how the modern pipeline lets Bruce write Friday, record Saturday, and shake feeds by Sunday. That urgency echoes across the mix: Moby and Jacob Lusk descend into winter stillness with a haunting piano rework, while Metric flips the phrase “victim of luck” into a catchy meditation on fortune's fallout. Foo Fighters slam back to a vintage roar, asking heavy questions with a grin, and Joe Jackson proves legacy doesn't mean nostalgic—his bright, narrative pop still lands clean.Midway, the energy pivots. Andrew Bird and Gavin Brivick give us a short, tender plea that lingers, then Young the Giant wrestle with belonging and the quiet art of not letting go. The Black Keys deliver a bluesy reminder that losses make the wins sweeter, and J. Cole sets 'Two Six' ablaze with tight imagery and shape-shifting flow. Charli XCX steps into cinematic mode for Wuthering Heights, weaving strings and restraint to let the emotion breathe. We close with memory and maintenance: Joyce Manor's snapshot of the bar that shaped a moment, and The New Pornographers' vow to keep the small flame alive—“my hands are cupped around a match.” If you're here for thoughtful lyrics, rock that punches, indie hooks, and a few gut-punch lines you'll carry all week, queue this one up and ride the arc with us.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-february-2026-new-music/pl.u-0KJxH4oxbV1. It's finally happening - the "Epstein files" are one step closer to being released. Shortly before this episode was recorded, both the U.S. House and Senate voted to pass the bill that will make public the emails, the characters, and more. Acc, Jack, and Mike discuss and wonder what - if anything - the outcome will be. Also discussed in this episode of The Acc and Jack Show: Famous people named Bubba, including a certain Love Sponge with whom this show was very briefly - and very mistakenly - associated. The New Pornographers discuss their ousted drummer, and why they aren't changing their name. Content creator Jack Doherty complains about going to jail, for the crime of having a terrible haircut. Our guest today on the podcast is acclaimed indie singer-songwriter Neko Case. For over two decades, she's built a remarkable career as both a solo artist and a member of Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers, and earlier this year became a New York Times bestselling author with her memoir The Harder I Fight The More I Love You. After seven years away from solo work, Neko returns with her eighth album Neon Grey Midnight Green, a sweeping record that blends her folk-rock roots with lush arrangements and her unmistakable lyricism. In today's episode, we talk with Neko about creating the album in her own studio and the difference between creating music collaboratively in a room versus through digital or AI tools. We talk about her journey into songwriting, how lyrics can sometimes take shape like literary pieces of prose, and we also dive in to her unexpected project of writing music for a Thelma & Louise Broadway musical.Neko Case : Instagram / SpotifyFind tour dates and more information about Neko Case hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
A self-described ferocious person, the ever-wild and perpetually awe-inspiring Grammy-nominated artist, producer, author, and visual artist Neko Case returns to SHEROES this week as we celebrate the release of her first album in seven years, Neon Grey Midnight Green, her ninth overall. Neko and Carmel catch up on the myriad projects that have kept her extremely busy during the years between records: writing and publishing her New York Times bestselling memoir, writing music for a musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise, writing, recording ,and touring with The New Pornographers, writing for her Substack, and writing songs that would become this new album - her first self-produced collection, and most ambitious, as she fulfilled her longtime dream of expanding her songs to new horizons with an orchestra.
After recently releasing her memoir, The Harder I Fight the More I Love You, and finishing her eighth studio album, the upcoming Neon Grey Midnight Green, Neko Case is drawing a lot of conclusions. She tells Marc that animals and nature are more consistent and reliable than people, that she's at peace with knowing her parents didn't want her, and that she's more comfortable choosing her own family. Neko and Marc also talk about her songwriting process, her pro wrestler great-aunt, and The New Pornographers. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

(0:58)The guys also talk about the recent Billy Joel documentary, which Ian recently watched, and pick the modern-day equivalent to the Piano Man (16:47). After a brief check-in on the Fantasy Album Draft (27:45), Steven and Ian run down a list of classic albums turning 20 in the next month or so, including landmark releases from My Morning Jacket, the New Pornographers, Wolf Parade, and more (30:42). They also do a "yay or nay" segment on Death Cab For Cutie (41:24).In Recommendation Corner, Ian recommends Anamanaguchi and Steven stumps for Tyler Childers (49:07).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Blood can give a wrestling match some much needed drama and memorable visuals. When wrestlers need to bleed during a match, they "run the razor" (quite literally) on their own flesh to achieve the desired effect. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Kevin Hare (Voices of Wrestling, 185 Miles South) play songs with blood, bleed, etc. in the title. Jordan Kurland is a partner in Noise Pop Industries and the co-founder and partner of Brilliant Corners Artist Management. As a band manager, Jordan works with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Toro y Moi, The New Pornographers, Perfume Genius, and Soccer Mommy. In this episode, Jordan selects five heady, funky, and esoteric jazz recordings that speak to his deep knowledge and the expansiveness of his collection. And along the way, we'll learn about the nuts and bolts of being a band manager to the stars, the educated guesswork of new artist development, and the joys and challenges of record collecting in the digital age. Greg is red hot angry about the news that broke regarding internet celebrity guitarist Giacomo Turra. You can check out the video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI4nuce3ppA). It appears that a large swath of Mr. Turra's ‘improvised jams' are note for note ripoffs of much lesser known guitarists that post on YouTube & Instagram. Neko Case is best known for her career as a musical performing artist and as a founding member of The New Pornographers, but her debut memoir The Harder I Fight the More I Love You (Grand Central) is all the evidence we need to see that she's got the chops for narrative.Podcast Specific SubstackPre-order The Front RunnerPromotional Sponsor: The Power of Narrative Conference. Our guest today is Neko Case. The iconic alt-country musician is a founding member of the indie-rock band The New Pornographers. She's also released numerous records on her own, featuring music from multiple genres. Now, she's published a memoir about her poverty-stricken childhood, and the way art and a connection to nature have served as guides throughout her life. It's called "The Harder I Fight The More I Love You". On February 8, 2025, Case came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk to poet, essayist and critic Hanif Abdurraqib.
Singer-songwriter Neko Case of The New Pornographers band has just released a memoir titled The Harder I Fight the More I Love You. While the book touches on her time with the Canadian indie-rock group, Case's memoir focuses more on her upbringing – she opens up about her complex relationship with her mother, who faked her own death when Case was young. In today's episode, Case speaks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about tracing her own family history, allowing room for rage, and seeing forgiveness not as an act, but an organic state of being. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
The cover of Neko Case's memoir features a young Neko in a swimsuit she says she wore for six months straight and she's accompanied by a drawing of a big spiky-toothed monster who she says is there to protect her. The invention of such monsters can feel necessary when one's parents are unavailable, simply not physically present, or, in the case of her mother, faking their own death only to reappear a year and a half later. Neko talks about the trauma of her childhood, what music meant then and as she grew up, and how she's shouldered and managed the pain ever since.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Last year, thanks to her management and PR, singer-songwriter Al Olender came on our show to talk about her second annual Alentine's Day show at The Old Dutch Church in Kingston, New York. She presented it as a love-fest to her found home and the people in and around it. I attended - with a number of friends - and it was a waking dream. The good kind.In the intervening 12 months, Al has toured in support of Shovels and Rope and Deer Tick, playing shows all over North America. She's working on and tuning up the magic for her second record. She filled in for Neko Case on a batch of shows with The New Pornographers. She's back today with a preview of the third annual Alentine's Day show - coming up on February 7. The website - alentines.com - hails potential attendees with the question and the gentle command: “Heartbroken? Meet me at the rodeo.” It feels to us like everyone is a little heartbroken right now and we can't think of anyone better than Al - or anything better than her music - to help us.
Nora O'Connor is a super collaborator, someone who loves singing harmonies and makes everyone sound good. She's a member of the Chicago all-star group the Flat Five and a formidable singer-songwriter in her own right, as her 2022 solo album, My Heart, her first in 18 years, reminded us. Here she reflects on her life as “a music worker,” including what she's learned from performing with such artists as the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, the New Pornographers and Neko Case. How has she has balanced her career and family life—and would a male performer have faced similar challenges? What ambitions does she have for herself and the Flat Five? What's the secret behind the alchemy she creates with frequent collaborator/Flat Five bandmate Kelly Hogan? And what role has the Chicago club the Hideout played in her musical life?
This week, Steve put together a set of nationality songs. These are the artists in this episode: Remy Zero, Weezer, Dexter And The Moonrocks, R.E.M., Sunday's Best, The New Pornographers, The Slider, Phantogram, BORNS, The Thermals, Fortune 500, Been Stellar, The Style Council, The Darling Buds, Kate Nash and Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Fellow music lovers, you are in for a treat, because for this episode we are diving head-first into a full-on rock concert of epic proportions. Join us for the 13th annual SMooCH benefit show at The Showbox in Seattle, where our community, this year alone, has raised over $2.2 million dollars for Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We've mentioned SMooCH before on the Nordy Pod way back in episode 3 with Megan Jasper, and again in episode 29 with Dr. Jeff Sperring, but we've never actually taken you to the show itself. If you're new to the Nordy Pod; SMooCH, which stands for Seattle Musicians for Children's Hospital, is an event that was started by Pete Nordstrom and his wife, Brandy, in 2012 after their own experience needing the care of Seattle Children's Hospital. In this episode you'll learn more about the Uncompensated Care program from return Nordy Pod guest, CEO of Seattle Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Sperring, you'll hear from one of the many patient families that have been directly impacted by the support of the Uncompensated Care fund, and you'll hear from Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub-Pop Records, who talks about what it takes to pull together a mind-blowing rock concert like SMooCH. On top of all that you'll get to hear from a few of the incredible musicians that agreed to come play the event this year. Since the very first show SMooCH has consistently managed to bring iconic artists to the Showbox, like Macklemore, Modest Mouse, Ben Gibbard, Iron and Wine, The New Pornographers, The Head and the Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Phantogram, and so many more. This year's event is no different. Prepare yourself for this all-star lineup featuring Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Duff McKagen, of Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, and the headliner, Nude Dragons, which are the reunited members from Soundgarden. We're very grateful to all of the musicians who showed up to donate their time and talents, we're grateful for those who helped organize the event, and we're super proud of our community that has donated to date over $30 million dollars to the Uncompensated Care fund. Thanks for tuning in to episode 77. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Travel with us down the snakehole into the magical world of Octoberland. In the first part of our two part autumnal extravaganza, Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko, co-founders of Big Stir Records and singers/songwriters in pop powerhouse The Armoires, join us to discuss their brand new fall classic Octoberland. Octoberland is an invigorating eleven-track collection of amped-up, richly detailed pop gems, accessible but still retaining the quirky, slightly eerie mystique of their unique sonic signature. Along with Christina (vocals, keys) and Rex (vocals, guitar), The Armoires also feature the intricate instrumental interplay between Larysa Bulbenko (viola) and the empathetic rhythm section of Clifford Ulrich (bass) and renowned music journalist/power pop expert John M. Borack (drums). It's a bright, brash amalgam of expansive New Pornographers-inspired lit-rock, '90s twee pop and dream rock, the college rock heights of R.E.M. and Echo & The Bunnymen, and a bedrock of Byrds and Jefferson Airplane electric folk roots. Along with getting deep into the many wonders of Octoberland, this very entertaining discussion covers the formation and evolution of Big Stir Records, music and animals, and so, so much more.
