Jordan Kurland is a partner in Noise Pop Industries and the co-founder and partner of Brilliant Corners Artist Management. As a band manager, Jordan works with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Toro y Moi, The New Pornographers, Perfume Genius, and Soccer Mommy. So he's played a huge role in ushering in some of the biggest indie rock acts of the day, but he's also an obsessive jazz fan and record collector. In this episode, Jordan selects five heady, funky, and esoteric jazz recordings that speak to his deep knowledge and the expansiveness of his collection. And along the way, we'll learn about the nuts and bolts of being a band manager to the stars, the educated guesswork of new artist development, and the joys and challenges of record collecting in the digital age. We fight through a number of technical difficulties to bring you Episode 350! Wendy's caught heat for roasting Katy Perry, some missionaries got cholera from holy water, and an OnlyFans model got in trouble for using a grocery store as her personal toilet. Mike Leach had a unique idea to get a first down, two Upstate NY brothers were arrested for two very different yet disgusting sex crimes, and a Catholic Hospital has found the one time when they don't want a fetus to be considered a person! Mickey Rourke got kicked out of the Big Brother UK house, Haley Joel Osment apologized for using antisemitic slurs, Joe Rogan wants the r-word to make a comeback, and the drummer for New Pornographers turned out to be into children. We say goodbye to Pope Francis, tell you what we're watching, and give you another segment in But The Drag Queens Are The Problem!

The episode also touches on other shocking news, such as the arrest of The New Pornographers' drummer on child porn charges.
Greg is red hot angry about the news that broke regarding internet celebrity guitarist Giacomo Turra. You can check out the video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI4nuce3ppA). It appears that a large swath of Mr. Turra's ‘improvised jams' are note for note ripoffs of much lesser known guitarists that post on YouTube & Instagram. Neko Case is best known for her career as a musical performing artist and as a founding member of The New Pornographers, but her debut memoir The Harder I Fight the More I Love You (Grand Central) is all the evidence we need to see that she's got the chops for narrative.Podcast Specific SubstackPre-order The Front RunnerPromotional Sponsor: The Power of Narrative Conference. Our guest today is Neko Case. The iconic alt-country musician is a founding member of the indie-rock band The New Pornographers. She's also released numerous records on her own, featuring music from multiple genres. Now, she's published a memoir about her poverty-stricken childhood, and the way art and a connection to nature have served as guides throughout her life. It's called "The Harder I Fight The More I Love You". On February 8, 2025, Case came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk to poet, essayist and critic Hanif Abdurraqib.
Singer-songwriter Neko Case of The New Pornographers band has just released a memoir titled The Harder I Fight the More I Love You. While the book touches on her time with the Canadian indie-rock group, Case's memoir focuses more on her upbringing – she opens up about her complex relationship with her mother, who faked her own death when Case was young. In today's episode, Case speaks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about tracing her own family history, allowing room for rage, and seeing forgiveness not as an act, but an organic state of being. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Recording artist Neko Case -- with more than a quarter-century as a solo artist and as a member of The New Pornographers -- has just published her memoir, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. Hear Case in conversation with Celia Gregory about the book. A new full-length album is expected later this year.
The cover of Neko Case's memoir features a young Neko in a swimsuit she says she wore for six months straight and she's accompanied by a drawing of a big spiky-toothed monster who she says is there to protect her. The invention of such monsters can feel necessary when one's parents are unavailable, simply not physically present, or, in the case of her mother, faking their own death only to reappear a year and a half later. Neko talks about the trauma of her childhood, what music meant then and as she grew up, and how she's shouldered and managed the pain ever since.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Last year, thanks to her management and PR, singer-songwriter Al Olender came on our show to talk about her second annual Alentine's Day show at The Old Dutch Church in Kingston, New York. She presented it as a love-fest to her found home and the people in and around it. I attended - with a number of friends - and it was a waking dream. The good kind.In the intervening 12 months, Al has toured in support of Shovels and Rope and Deer Tick, playing shows all over North America. She's working on and tuning up the magic for her second record. She filled in for Neko Case on a batch of shows with The New Pornographers. She's back today with a preview of the third annual Alentine's Day show - coming up on February 7. The website - alentines.com - hails potential attendees with the question and the gentle command: “Heartbroken? Meet me at the rodeo.” It feels to us like everyone is a little heartbroken right now and we can't think of anyone better than Al - or anything better than her music - to help us.
Nora O'Connor is a super collaborator, someone who loves singing harmonies and makes everyone sound good. She's a member of the Chicago all-star group the Flat Five and a formidable singer-songwriter in her own right, as her 2022 solo album, My Heart, her first in 18 years, reminded us. Here she reflects on her life as “a music worker,” including what she's learned from performing with such artists as the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, the New Pornographers and Neko Case. How has she has balanced her career and family life—and would a male performer have faced similar challenges? What ambitions does she have for herself and the Flat Five? What's the secret behind the alchemy she creates with frequent collaborator/Flat Five bandmate Kelly Hogan? And what role has the Chicago club the Hideout played in her musical life?

Fellow music lovers, you are in for a treat, because for this episode we are diving head-first into a full-on rock concert of epic proportions. Join us for the 13th annual SMooCH benefit show at The Showbox in Seattle, where our community, this year alone, has raised over $2.2 million dollars for Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We've mentioned SMooCH before on the Nordy Pod way back in episode 3 with Megan Jasper, and again in episode 29 with Dr. Jeff Sperring, but we've never actually taken you to the show itself. If you're new to the Nordy Pod; SMooCH, which stands for Seattle Musicians for Children's Hospital, is an event that was started by Pete Nordstrom and his wife, Brandy, in 2012 after their own experience needing the care of Seattle Children's Hospital. In this episode you'll learn more about the Uncompensated Care program from return Nordy Pod guest, CEO of Seattle Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Sperring, you'll hear from one of the many patient families that have been directly impacted by the support of the Uncompensated Care fund, and you'll hear from Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub-Pop Records, who talks about what it takes to pull together a mind-blowing rock concert like SMooCH. On top of all that you'll get to hear from a few of the incredible musicians that agreed to come play the event this year. Since the very first show SMooCH has consistently managed to bring iconic artists to the Showbox, like Macklemore, Modest Mouse, Ben Gibbard, Iron and Wine, The New Pornographers, The Head and the Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Phantogram, and so many more. This year's event is no different. Prepare yourself for this all-star lineup featuring Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Duff McKagen, of Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, and the headliner, Nude Dragons, which are the reunited members from Soundgarden. We're very grateful to all of the musicians who showed up to donate their time and talents, we're grateful for those who helped organize the event, and we're super proud of our community that has donated to date over $30 million dollars to the Uncompensated Care fund. Thanks for tuning in to episode 77. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Share your Nordstrom experience, good or bad, by giving us a call and leaving a voicemail at: 206.594.0526, or send an email to nordypodcast@nordstrom.com to be a part of the conversation! Travel with us down the snakehole into the magical world of Octoberland. In the first part of our two part autumnal extravaganza, Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko, co-founders of Big Stir Records and singers/songwriters in pop powerhouse The Armoires, join us to discuss their brand new fall classic Octoberland. Octoberland is an invigorating eleven-track collection of amped-up, richly detailed pop gems, accessible but still retaining the quirky, slightly eerie mystique of their unique sonic signature. Along with Christina (vocals, keys) and Rex (vocals, guitar), The Armoires also feature the intricate instrumental interplay between Larysa Bulbenko (viola) and the empathetic rhythm section of Clifford Ulrich (bass) and renowned music journalist/power pop expert John M. Borack (drums). It's a bright, brash amalgam of expansive New Pornographers-inspired lit-rock, '90s twee pop and dream rock, the college rock heights of R.E.M. and Echo & The Bunnymen, and a bedrock of Byrds and Jefferson Airplane electric folk roots. Along with getting deep into the many wonders of Octoberland, this very entertaining discussion covers the formation and evolution of Big Stir Records, music and animals, and so, so much more. We absolutely mean it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, we're scratching The Itch to expand our musical horizons! Aaron saw indie rock royalty The New Pornographers at Thalia Hall in Chicago all the way back in May, and we've been sitting on the recording for months waiting for the right time to share it. But now, as we continue our recent streak of dropping two episodes a week, it's time to reveal the long-lost final Itch event of KC's birthday week! The New P's are an evergreen band, and we think this is an evergreen episode. Enjoy. The New Pornographers' Carl Newman discusses the many themes of isolation and collapse on the band's recently released 9th studio album, Continue As A Guest (Merge Records), a joyously dark and tuneful reaction to what Newman refers to as "the ambivalence of day-to-day life during the pandemic and the endless pitfalls of living online." Plus the return of Record Store Day co-founder Carrie Colliton, who calls in from Nashville music conference to share some impressive stats from April's Record Store Day, assert that CD's are still very much a going concern. Written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed and produced the theme music and selected interstitial music. Sponsored as always by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Crosley turntables. Please rate us, review and subscribe, wherever you get podcasts. Episode dedicated to Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke who passed away right after the show was edited, look for a proper tribute soon.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Carl Newman. Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Carl began his musical career in the early '90s as a member of Superconductor, but it was really with his next band Zumpano where he began to find his voice, a style that would come to fruition with The New Pornographers. Since their first album Mass Romantic in 2000, the band has become one of the preeminent indie rock groups of the 21st century, with nine albums to their name, all of which are great. Carl has also recorded three wonderful solo albums, and most recently The New Pornographers' latest album Continue as a Guest was released on Merge Records, and like everything else they've done, it is just delightful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Check out my free philosophy Substack where I write essays every couple months here and my old casiopop band's lost album here! And the comedy podcast I do with my wife Naomi Couples Therapy can be found here!
