Chapter 1:Summary of The Picture of Dorian Gray"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a novel by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1890. It presents a moral tale of the corrupting influence of art and beauty when misused for selfish purposes. The protagonist, Dorian Gray, is a strikingly handsome young man living in Victorian England who becomes the subject of a portrait by artist Basil Hallward. Captivated by Dorian's beauty, Basil believes his art reaches its pinnacle in capturing Dorian's image.Under the influence of the cynical and hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian becomes enchanted by the notion that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Lord Henry's worldview profoundly impacts Dorian, and he wishes for a supernatural agreement where his portrait would age and bear the scars of his experiences, while he himself would remain forever young and beautiful.Miraculously, Dorian's wish is granted. As he spirals into a life of debauchery, excessive indulgence, and moral decay, his physical appearance remains untouched by time and vice, while his portrait grotesquely transforms, reflecting his true inner condition. This divergence between his unchanged appearance and the increasing disfigurement of the portrait symbolizes the split between his public image and hidden corruption.Dorian's actions grow progressively darker, including manipulating countless individuals and indirectly causing deaths. The culmination of his moral descent is implicated in the murder of Basil Hallward after Basil confronts him about his degenerate lifestyle and begs him to reform. As Dorian grows older, the burden of his hidden wickedness becomes unbearable. Finally, in a fit of desperation, he decides to destroy the portrait, the only evidence of his twisted inner self, believing this will free him. In doing so, he inadvertently kills himself with the same knife he used to kill Basil, and his servants find an old, withered, and unrecognizable corpse. Conversely, the portrait returns to its original form, depicting Dorian as the beautiful and innocent young man he once was.Through this story, Wilde explores themes of aestheticism, moral duplicity, and the consequences of living a life devoted solely to pleasure, with a sharp critique on the Victorian society of his time.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Picture of Dorian Gray"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde is a philosophical novel centered around the themes of aestheticism, moral duplicity, and the nature of beauty. Here's an outline of key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas in the novel: Key Plot Points1. Introduction of Dorian Gray: Dorian Gray is introduced as a young, handsome man who becomes the subject of a portrait by painter Basil Hallward. Basil is fascinated by Dorian's beauty and believes that Dorian is his artistic inspiration.2. Influence of Lord Henry: Dorian becomes influenced by Lord Henry Wotton, a cynical and hedonistic aristocrat who espouses a philosophy of self-indulgence. Lord Henry's worldview deeply affects Dorian, leading him to wish that the portrait would age instead of him.3. The Cursed Portrait: Dorian's wish comes true. As he pursues a life of excess and moral decadence, his physical appearance remains youthful and unchanging, while the portrait ages and records every sin.4. Sibyl Vane: Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a talented actress, whose performances enrapture him. However, when Sibyl decides to quit acting for the sake of their love, Dorian cruelly rejects her as she no longer entertains him, leading Sibyl to take her own life.5. Dorian's Downfall: Over the years, Dorian's actions become increasingly corrupt and even criminal. He remains outwardly young and beautiful, but his portrait becomes grotesque. Dorian hides the painting, and his fear of exposure...

As our story nears its magnificent end, we enter the world of Dorian in ruminating retreat. Alone in the darkness of his heart, wrestling with the splendour of his eternal youth and the ghastly image that is preserved in the attic, all while pondering the difficulty of escape from the sins of his past, and the cruel proof of his degeneration. In this chapter, we find Dorian grappling with memories of his past manipulations, particularly the naiveté of the young and naïve girl who loved him so sincerely with the understanding that he was a poor man. Reminiscing her innocent laughter, Dorian is faced with a sharp longing for the purity and grace of his own youth, hence shadowing the grim reality of his misdemeanors which have not left him, but rather scarred him profoundly. He contemplates upon the provoking statements of his dubious confidant, Lord Henry, challenging the notion of immutability. Can the harm already done be undone? Can a man who has sinned so deeply and affected many lives negatively be saved? Amid these deliberations, the beautifully monstrous portrait looms in his mind. It is a constant reminder of all his sins, each degradation emphasized in the contorted and perverse image. Dorian grapples with the consequences of his actions, specifically the gruesome death of Basil Hallward and the impact this has had on his own soul. Amidst the turmoil, he yearns for a new beginning, a fresh start where his sins will cease to haunt him. However, with the likeness of himself hidden in his attic, he is confronted with the truth of his own nature. In the dramatic climax that ensues, Dorian makes a radical decision—one that would seal his fate forever—-a desperate attempt to exterminate the evidence of his debaucheries.

As a bright November morning dawns over a seemingly tranquil Dorian Gray, a nightmare from the night before gazes upon him in silence. Even in the hallowed refuge of sleep, he cannot escape the relentless hold of the heinous act that he had committed the night before. Dorian may appear in peaceful slumber but underneath, like a single drop of ink slowly spreading through clear water, the guilt and horror of his actions seep into consciousness.A cruel twist of fate prompts Dorian to confront the man he murdered, Basil Hallward, in broad daylight. The sight is a ghastly reminder that wicked deeds are best left within confines of dimly lit corners and shadows. "Such hideous things were for the darkness, not for the day," Wilde reminds us. As Dorian struggles to bear the weight of his crime, he paradoxically reminisces about past conquests, those that brought a perverse joy to his senses and intellect, a joy that the murder of his friend failed to bring. In his desperation, Dorian turns to his former friend, the brilliant but pragmatic scientist, Alan Campbell. With a note threatening exposure, Dorian manipulates Campbell into removing any evidence of the vile act: the lifeless body of Basil Hallward. Campbell, despite his initial resistance, succumbs to Dorian's blackmail providing a chilling glimpse into how lives intertwine in a web of manipulation and surrender. As Dorian rids himself of his tragic connections with Basil and Alan, his alienation from humanity deepens—Dorian is lost alone in the reflection of his flawless image that conceals a rotting soul. Meanwhile, moral boundaries dissolve and human relationships morph into tools for self-preservation.

Wilde's masterful prose guides us through an unsettling exposure of Dorian's secret self to his once-beloved artist Basil Hallward, eliciting a chilling atmosphere of suspense as the horrific truth of Dorian's wish is unveiled. The room, forgotten and decrepit, mirrors the hidden, corrupted soul of Dorian, once pure and beautiful, now tarnished by a life of hedonism and superficiality. Wilde subtly uses contrasts throughout this chapter to further depict the battle between ideal and reality, between deceptive appearance and hidden truth. As the dialogue unfolds, infused with raw emotion and haunting reality, we're gifted a window into the depths of Dorian's inner psychodrama. Dorian, once seen as an embodiment of innocent beauty, now displays a chilling indifference to his own extreme corruption. He attributes, without remorse, his downfall to his seducer and his betrayed friend, Basil Hallward, who rendered him vain of his own beauty. The climax of this chapter erupts in a shocking act of violence and horror, a murder driven by irrational hatred and dark influence, sewn into Dorian's corrupted soul. His vicious attack is a projection of his self-loathing, culminates in a tragic end for his innocent admirer.

As we rejoin Dorian Gray, our young Adonis enters a bustling theatre, flanked by rakish Lord Henry and loyal Basil Hallward. The theatre's manager, a character whom our hero loathes, ushers the trio into their box. There they settle, Dorian anticipating the performance of his darling Sybil Vane, the obscure actress who happens to be the master key unlocking his tender emotions. Sybil makes her entrance to thunderous applause. She's radiant, like a fawn caught in the spotlight, her naivety magnifying her allure. Dorian can barely contain his anticipation, seemingly frozen in adoration. But admiration turns to bewilderment as Sybil's performance falls dismayingly flat. Her lines, though borrowed from the lips of Shakespeare's Juliet, ring hollow and rehearsed. As the curtain falls on her lacklustre performance, Dorian's disillusionment gives way to anger. The once enchanting Sybil, now disappointingly mediocre in his eyes, prompts a fierce lashing out from our love-struck protagonist. The echoes of Dorian's bitter words still reverberate when we leave the now eerily quiet theatre.Behind the evident petulance, we sense a deeper transformation taking place. Remember the haunting portrait, intricately brushed by Basil Hallward, now secreted away in Dorian's home? An eerie change comes over the likeness that, until now, reflected only the idealized youthful symmetry of our hero. In its countenance, we glimpse the first shadowy flicker of an unsettling truth- the visage of Dorian Gray mirrors not his physical beauty, but rather the darkening contours of his soul.

In this chapter, Wilde handles the subtleties of dialogue and the complexities of human nature with deft strokes, painting a vivid picture of Victorian society's elite. We find ourselves in a small, private room at the Bristol where the aloof Lord Henry Wotton upends the world of artist Basil Hallward with the startling news of their mutual acquaintance, Dorian Gray's, engagement.Basil, who considers Dorian as his muse, is visibly shaken by the news of his engagement to a seemingly lesser being - a little actress. Lord Henry, the philosophical hedonist, teases and questions Basil's moral objections, sparking animated debates about the nature of marriage, individuality, and good and evil. Yet, beneath the witty banter and flippant remarks, a current of foreboding runs through this chapter as Basil perceives a crack in his close bond with the handsome and impressionable Dorian. As Dorian arrives, overflowing with joy and exuberantly sharing his romantic adventure from the previous evening, the evocative discourse on love continues. Unfolding before you is a tapestry of passion, absurdity, and the perceived sinfulness of pleasure. By the end of the chapter, a gloom seems to envelop Basil— his intuitive heart foresees a shift in his relationship with Dorian— something irrevocable, an unimaginable chasm that life has thrust between them.

Although Lord Henry's intrigue is piqued by the portrait, the artist is reluctant to exhibit this creation, fearing it reveals too much of himself. With his signature air of nonchalance, Lord Henry urges Hallward to share the story of how such a beautiful stranger captivated him.Through their conversation, we are swept into a tale of artistic devotion fuelled by complex emotions; the nature of beauty and intellect, and the art of deception within the delicacies of human relationships are laid bare. As the daylight dances across the scene, the air grows heavy with the realization that Dorian Gray is more than just a muse; he is the essence of Hallward's art and the manifestation of a new school of beauty and passion.Experience the enchanting garden and its revelations as we delve deeper into the world of Dorian Gray together. Uncover the mysteries behind this captivating young man, and explore how he has come to define a new era of artistry. The enchanting prose of Oscar Wilde will transport you to a realm of romance and truth as you uncover each character's deepest desires and fears as they waltz through this beautiful chapter.

From the number one internationally best-selling author of The Butterfly House comes a timely, suspenseful and darkly original new novel about a missing child and the web of lies that has threatened his life - and may prevent him from ever being found. When 15-year-old Oscar Dreyer-Hoff disappears, the police assume he's simply a runaway - a typically overlooked middle child doing what teenagers do all around the world. But his frantic family is certain that something terrible has happened. After all, what runaway would leave behind a note that reads: He looked around and saw the knife that had stabbed Basil Hallward. He had cleaned it many times, till there was no stain left upon it. It was bright and glistened. As it had killed the painter, so it would kill the painter's work, and all that that meant. It would kill the past, and when that was dead, he would be free. It's not much to go on but it's all that detectives Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner have. And with every passing hour, as the odds of finding a missing person grow dimmer, it will have to be enough. The third thrilling instalment in the internationally best-selling Copenhagen-set Kørner and Werner series, from a rapidly rising star in crime fiction.

The lamp cast fantastic shadows on the wall and staircase. A rising wind made some of the windows rattle. When they reached the top landing, Dorian set the lamp down on the floor, and taking out the key turned it in the lock. "You insist on knowing, Basil?" he asked, in a low voice. "Yes." "I am delighted," he answered, smiling. Then he added, somewhat harshly, "You are the one man in the world who is entitled to know everything about me.”

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Ch 12 Oscar Wilde It was on the ninth of November, the eve of his own thirty-eighth birthday, as he often remembered afterwards. He was walking home about eleven o'clock from Lord Henry's, where he had been dining, and was wrapped in heavy furs, as the night was cold and foggy. At the corner of Grosvenor Square and South Audley Street a man passed him in the mist, walking very fast, and with the collar of his grey ulster turned up. He had a bag in his hand. Dorian recognised him. It was Basil Hallward. A strange sense of fear, for which he could not account, came over him. He made no sign of recognition, and went on quickly in the direction of his own house. But Hallward had seen him.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - Book 1, Part 1 Title: The Picture of Dorian Gray Overview: The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde. A shorter novella-length version was published in the July 1890 issue of the American periodical Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. A revised and extended edition was published in April 1891. Revisions include changes in character dialogue as well as the addition of the preface, more scenes and chapters, and Sibyl Vane's brother, James Vane. The story revolves around a portrait of Dorian Gray painted by Basil Hallward, a friend of Dorian's and an artist infatuated with Dorian's beauty. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton and is soon enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied amoral experiences while staying young and beautiful; all the while, his portrait ages and visually records every one of Dorian's sins. The complete audio is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://adbl.co/34LnzU6 The Picture of Dorian Gray By Oscar Wilde Narrated by Graham Scott, Rob Goll, Mark Crowle-Groves, Arielle Lipshaw This extended moralistic fable, Oscar Wilde's longest work of fiction, was first published in 1890. It may be described as a tragedy of manners, in which a wealthy young man, endowed with great powers of physical and personal attractiveness, embarks on a hectic course of life which brings destruction to many around him, and ultimately to himself. In a response to a hostile critic in the St James Gazette, Wilde wrote of the book: "..... they will find that it is a story with a moral. And the moral is this: All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment. The painter, Basil Hallward, worshiping physical beauty far too much, as most painters do, dies by the hand of one in whose soul he has created a monstrous and absurd vanity. Dorian Gray, having led a life of mere sensation and pleasure, tries to kill conscience, and at that moment kills himself. Lord Henry Wotton seeks to be merely the spectator of life. He finds that those who reject the battle are more deeply wounded than those who take part in it."
