The new chair of the Canterbury A&P Association Board is determined to get the show back on the road.  Former Speaker of Parliament Sir David Carter has taken the reins in the lead-up to November's scaled-back event.  Carter says he wants to see the event continue for generations to come.  He told Mike Hosking personality issues made the relationship between previous board members and the general committee dysfunctional, which caused it to fall apart.  Carter says that's not good enough, and Christchurch can't have a Show Week without its iconic show.  He said that the biggest job will be getting financial supporters on-side.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The National Party's annual conference has exposed further division within the party. Sir David says it'd be hypocritical to stick around when he had "zero confidence" in the chair. Peter Goodfellow and leader Judith Collins both fronted the annual conference over the weekend, telling members a win in 2023 is possible. But Sir David told our political editor Jane Patterson that won't happen while Goodfellow is at the helm.

“Those lessons, like speaking with parents when you need to get on the front foot, how you set up your governance. How were you supposed to know that if you are an academy trust leader… and no-one was sharing learnings about what had failed?” This week we speak to Sir David Carter, Executive Director of System Leadership at Ambition Institute and Laura McInerney, Co-founder of Teacher Tapp about their new book Leading academy trusts: why some fail but most don’t. We discuss why things might go wrong in trusts and who gets to learn from those failures, but also how those running trusts can avoid some of those pitfalls too. We examine how a trust needs to demonstrate clearly to parents, pupils and staff how they will benefit from selecting, attending or being employed by their organisation.  We talk about being a CEO and the many challenges of the role but also the rewards of doing the job well. We consider how CEOs and boards, but also regional and national schools commissioners, might be able to tell if trusts are likely to be successful. David and Laura also gaze into the future to think about what kinds of innovation or consolidation might happen in the sector over the next 5 years. " The difference between being a head, executive head and a CEO is still not that well understood... being a CEO is not just being a head on speed, it’s a very different job"

IOE Public Debates: Some schools have made a name for themselves in performing ‘against the odds', their pupils chalking up impressive achievements in national tests and exams. But still there remains a link between schools' circumstances and their performance, and some glaring geographical disparities. Breaking that link has been a focal point for education policy and many high profile organisations in education over the past two decades. There are occasional signs of progress, but they have often been modest and faltering. How far can we get with school-based interventions, and are there any such interventions, existing or hypothetical, that we should pursue with greater vigour?
