Two-time Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alistair Brownlee joins Performance People to reflect on the moment that defined him; carrying his brother Jonny across the 2016 World Triathlon Series Grand Final finish line in an instant which exemplified what sportsmanship should look like.Fresh from running the Empire State Building's 80-plus floors, Brownlee shares why he's embracing a new chapter of bucket-list adventures, from gravel racing in South Africa to Ironman-distance events in Patagonia. He opens up about the grind behind his golden years, high intensity training for 40+ hours a week across three sports, and the mental discipline it takes to perform under pressure.Alistair discusses the fine line between confidence and self-belief, why recovery is “everything,” and how consistency trumps perfection in both elite and everyday training. Reflecting on life beyond the start line, he admits he misses the simplicity of full-time sport but relishes the freedom to say yes to life again. This is an episode about purpose, preparation, and perspective, from one of Britain's greatest endurance athletes, still learning what performance means when medals are no longer the measure.________________________________The ainslie + ainslie Performance People podcast talks to high-performers in the world of sport and beyond, to bring defining moments, hard-earned insights and expert advice to everyday performance. Vet Ruth Brownlee is one of the Clinical Directors at St Peters Vets. Speaking to Mike Waddington, she comments on the Competition and Markets Authority's interim report into transparency; she welcomes the report and gives some advice (reproduced below) to ask up front about costs and discuss your budget too; 'contexualised care' is about the patient and the client's circumstances. Ruth also talks about autumn hazards, from acorn and conker ingestion, to the more serious mushroom digestion - hot cross buns too! Some food people eat - like garlic - are not good for animals. She talks about anxiety medications in fireworks season (and others like separation anxiety). Owners need to be aware and vigilant and should call their vet for advice if you suspect something! Ruth's advice on coosts: My general thoughts about vet fees and advice to pet owners; Don't be worried about asking for costs up front, we would much rather have an open conversation about cost and possible solutions. Let us know your budget or if there are financial constraints. In certain situations we may be able to provide a variety diagnostic or treatment options with different costs (with the knowledge that the lower cost options may not result in as fast a diagnosis/treatment resolution etc) Look at options that will save money such as joining a health care plan for routine care if that suits your needs. For new pet owners - look into the ongoing costs for a pet before taking one on, Investigate the cost of routine care but also potential costs if your pet becomes ill. From our point of view at St Peters Vets we always try to provide estimates particularly for any patient requiring hospitalisation or surgical procedures at the time of admit. Accurate estimates are fairly straight forward to produce for surgical procedures and day patients but can be trickier for ongoing complex medical cases that can require a large variety of diagnostic tests so we try to keep owners updated with costs. Following the trade of Brownlee, does it feel like the Titans are trying to rid themselves of Ran Carthon draft picks? The roster needs continue to grow, and how realistic is a timeline to get that fixed? People are curious about the future at head coach and have some names in mind. Robby has the Rob Rant to close out the hour.
Robby and Joe start off on the latest with the Titans. HC Brian Callahan shared some thoughts on the Jarvis Brownlee trade. What do we make of what he said? Does the trade make more sense now? We close out the hour with the Best and Worst in Sports this week.

After being shot ten times by her fiancé and left for dead, Katrina Brownlee miraculously survived and became a decorated NYPD detective, a mentor, and founder of a nonprofit support group for at-risk women.ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, in the United States, an average of twenty-four people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, and one in three women have experienced some form of domestic violence. One of those women was Katrina Brownlee, who as a twenty-two-year-old mother of two experienced hell at the hands of her then-fiancé. He was a law enforcement officer-a group two to four times more likely than the general population to be abusive, and who are known for protecting their own. During his dangerous outbursts, Brownlee would call the police for help, only to see the cops turn their backs on her when her abuser flashed his badge. On a cold January morning in 1993, her fiancé shot her ten times and left her for dead.Brownlee could have been just one more of the eleven females killed per minute worldwide by a loved one. Instead, miraculously, she survived. Through hard work, faith, and perseverance, she recovered from her injuries and found a path through her trauma. She decided to become a police officer to help others in her situation, to be the "good cop" who had not been there for her when she had needed saving. In 2021, she retired from a highly decorated twenty-year career with the NYPD. As the founder of a support group for at-risk young women, Young Ladies of Our Future, Brownlee decided that the time had come to tell her story-the whole story-of self-empowerment, of healing generational trauma, and of turning pain into hope for herself and her community.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

At just 22 years old, Katrina Brownlee was shot 10 times by her fiancé and left for dead. She miraculously survived and became a decorated NYPD detective, a mentor and the founder of a nonprofit support group for at-risk women. She also made history as the first Black woman to serve on the protective detail of a New York City mayor. Brownlee's powerful memoir, “And Then Came The Blues,” recounts her harrowing journey from trauma to triumph. She joined NY1's Errol Louis to share how she survived the shooting, rose through the NYPD ranks and broke barriers in law enforcement. The conversation explored her challenging childhood marked by abuse, her motivations for joining the police force, and her work with Young Ladies of Our Future, the group she founded to mentor and guide at-risk youth.

I can't blame you if your assessment of Parliament today is that it's become a circus, because what happened today is kind of hard to defend or even explain. Chlöe was kicked out, Brownlee suspended her for a week and all of the Government parties voted for that punishment - and that includes New Zealand First, before Winston Peters then got up to tell Jerry Brownlee that the punishment wasn't fair, even though he just voted for the punishment. And then Debbie got up and said the C-word again. Now, Chlöe did actually break the rules. I mean, this is another one of those seemingly arbitrary or hard to explain rules in Parliament - that MPs can't accuse each other of being cowards. Nick Smith did it in 2003, he accused MPs across the house of not having the spine to debate a vote. He withdrew and apologized. Steve Chadwick did it in 2007, she accused the opposition of being absolutely gutless and spineless. She withdrew and apologized. John Key did it in 2015, quite famously when he yelled at Labour to get some guts over the war, but he got away with it and actually probably shouldn't have. So Chlöe did break the rules. But then, Debbie got up and said the C-word, and she didn't break the rules. So explain that. How is accusing other MPs of being spineless worse than dropping the C-bomb in the House of Representatives? I mean, sure, one is aimed at someone and the other one is just a swear word that's been dropped. But when you get into explaining that level of nuance on offensiveness, I think you've lost the audience. Plus, why is Gerry Brownlee all of a sudden the tough cop? I mean, this is the guy who was wringing his hands over the Māori Party getting kicked out of Parliament for 3 weeks for the haka in David Seymour's face and for refusing to turn up to the Privileges Committee and for them leaking the recommended punishment from the Privileges Committee. But when Chlöe says basically the same thing that John Key once said without punishment, Jerry comes down on her like a ton of bricks. Frankly, none of this makes sense anymore. I mean, it does on a level of detail and minutia, sure, but explaining it to a normal person, no sense whatsoever. But guess who's loving this? Chlöe's loving this, because Chlöe's learned from Te Pāti Māori and the haka that there's one surefire way to get attention, and that's to break the rules of Parliament and not be sorry. What a circus. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have some sad news to share with you today on the podcast. Sadly, my dad passed away on May 22, 2025. My dad was such a pivotal part of my family. He was an amazing husband to my mom. He was such a loving father and a supportive and involved grandfather. This loss is deep. It is interesting because your mom and dad are there when you take your first breath. But it is so heartbreaking to be there when they take their last. I am going to be taking some time off to grieve the loss of my dad. I remember when I lost Jeannie back in 2016 and my divorce in 2014, something that really helped me was to read--- read God's Word and read books that pointed me back to God's Word. I need that again this summer. I need time to input and allow myself time to sit in the pain and grieve—take time to process the hard emotions. I want to thank you in advance for giving me space to do that this summer. I don't know how long it will be, but I know it is my best yes. I believe God is going to use that time, so I can pour back into you when I return. I cannot wait to see what God wants me to learn in the midst of the pain. So, I thought today would be very honoring to share one of the episodes where my dad was a guest back in 2020. I know you are going to learn so much from his wisdom! My dad's episode back in 2020: With Father's Day just around the corner, I am excited to have my dad, John Brownlee, as a guest on the Depth podcast this week. I asked him to share some of his words of wisdom and best advice as he is a father to 4 girls and a grandfather to 7 grandchildren. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I love that my dad shares some of our funny memories and crazy dinner activities as well as encourages other dads to make their kids a priority. I am so thankful that my dad was an intentional father to me and my sisters. I recommend listening to this episode alongside your spouse or if you are a single mom like me, there are still lots parenting nuggets in this episode for you as well! I believe parenting is the most rewarding and challenging job all at the same time, so I hope this episode encourages you along your parenting journey! I promise you do not want to miss this episode. My dad was on the podcast again in December 2024- so special to have him on a second time. Check out Depth Podcast Episode 224: Simplify and Live with Intention!
