British Triathlon is one of the dominant nations in global triathlon and we have some fantastic talent at both ITU and Ironman distances. The growth of the sport in the last 15 years has been phenomenal. You may be one of those who entered the sport in the 21st century but what do you know of the previous generation? The super athletes who helped build the foundations for the Brownlee's, Taylor Brown's, and Yee's of today? Sadly performances and exploits of these athletes are often overlooked and so I'm on a mission to highlight the legends of British triathlon who I admired when I was starting out in the sport. Today my guest is one such legend, Michelle Dillon. Michelle, founder of Team Dillon, is a former World and European champion and two-time Olympian. After her successful career was cut short by a back injury in 2008, Michelle turned her attention to helping others achieve their goals.   Michelle is now an Olympic Coach who works with all levels of athletes from beginners to high profile Elite athletes.    She has helped numerous triathletes realise their potential through her unique combination of energy, passion, and enthusiasm, coupled with the knowledge and experience of someone who has been coaching for as long as 20+ years and competed at the highest level.   After being away from competing in the sport for 10 years, Michelle made a comeback to racing at the World 45-49-year-old Age Group sprint championships in 2018 on the Gold Coast. Michelle not only became AG World Champion but also clocked the fastest time across all age groups for the sprint distance! She also became World Age Group champion in 2019 in Lausanne, and is looking forward to competing in the 2021 season and for many years to come, as long as the body will allow! As usual, this is a comprehensive chat covering a range of topics including: *Starting out as a runner *I'm a triathlete …but I can't even swim 50m *Even pro athletes have injury problems - The long term hip injury  *When an operation forces retirement, and it's a relief *The transition to coaching *Racing as an age grouper   If you'd like to follow Michelle please visit the Team Dillon website: www.teamdilloncoaching.com You can also find her at the following social media hangouts: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teamdilloncoaching/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Teamdillon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/teamdilloncoaching/   Other links from our chat Behind the scenes with Michelle & Stuart - Sigma sports ambassadors   Athens 2004 - Women's Olympic triathlon - Michelle finished 6th Sydney 2000 - Women's Olympic Triathlon 1994 Commonwealth Games - Women's 10000m Michelle talked enthusiastically about her Pilates Reformer machine Book recommendation Fast after 50:How to race strong for the rest of your life by Joe Friel Take a 30 day trial in my SWAT Inner Circle for just £1. Anyone who works in communications knows that it's easy for productive conversions to turn dark and hurtful, particularly when it comes to issues like race and identity. Dr. Mordecai Ian Brownlee leans into the difficult parts of these conversations in his work as a leader, teacher, mentor, speaker, and more. He joins us this week to discuss the need for spaces where we can freely share our own experiences and learn from the experiences of others. We also talk about how to set a positive example on social media and use it to lift people up, rather than get dragged into the latest conflict of the day. Mordecai currently serves as the Vice President for Student Success at St. Philip's College. Effective July 15, 2021, he will serve as the sixth President of the Community College of Aurora within the Colorado Community College System. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Morgan State University School of Education & Urban Studies and the University of Charleston School of Business and Leadership, as well as a higher education columnist for EdSurge. His mission as an educator is to work collectively with all stakeholders to create a safe and equitable learning environment that promotes student inclusion, student engagement, and student success. That mission comes through loud and clear in this conversation.

McElroy’s fifth-place finish was his best international result since a string of three consecutive World Triathlon Cup wins in the fall of 2019. With a time of 55 minutes, 11 seconds on the sprint-distance course, McElroy was 12 seconds off a podium that was led by Great Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee, a two-time Olympic medalist and 2012 World Triathlon champion, in 54:48. Adrien Briffod of Switzerland claimed silver in 54:52 for his first World Triathlon Cup medal since a June 2017 win, while three-time World Triathlon champion Mario Mola of Spain was third in 54:59. On a warm, dry day in Italy, it was Seth Rider (Germantown, Tenn.) who appeared to be the U.S. favorite through the start of the race. Hungary’s Márk Dévay led after the 750-meter swim, followed by a group of 10 that included Rider. In third after the first transition, the 2014 U.S. Youth Olympian took the lead at one point during the first lap of the bike among a trio that included Dévay and Brownlee. Rider, McElroy and 2010 Youth Olympian Kevin McDowell (Geneva, Ill.) all remained in the large lead group of up to 24 athletes throughout the three-lap, 19.3-kilometer ride with McDowell and McElroy sixth and seventh at the end of the bike, which was led by Frenchmen Paul Georgenthum and Arthur Berland. Rider was once again the leading American after the second transition, in fourth, until McElroy made his move during the 5-kilometer run. McElroy vaulted from 11th to fifth in the first lap of the run, and fought to maintain that pace through the finish while Brownlee and Briffod broke away on the second and final lap to lead the race.  McDowell placed 21st in 56:05 and Rider 24th in 56:36. With a time of 57:43, 2016 Olympian Ben Kanute (Geneva, Ill.) was 35th, while Darr Smith (Atlanta, Ga.), who had raced the Olympic-distance World Triathlon Cup Lisbon one week prior, was 47th in 1:00:23. McElroy’s finish improved his rank in the World Triathlon Olympic Qualification Rankings by one spot. The U.S. will send three men to Tokyo if it maintains three men in the top-30 of the Olympic Qualification Rankings by June 14. Morgan Pearson, who did not compete in Arzachena, is the only U.S. male currently qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team by way of his bronze medal at the World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama on May 15. McElroy's fifth-place finish was his best international result since a string of three consecutive World Triathlon Cup wins in the fall of 2019. With a time of 55 minutes, 11 seconds on the sprint-distance course, McElroy was 12 seconds off a podium that was led by Great Britain's Jonathan Brownlee, a two-time Olympic medalist and 2012 World Triathlon champion, in 54:48. Hungary's Márk Dévay led after the 750-meter swim, followed by a group of 10 that included Rider. McElroy's finish improved his rank in the World Triathlon Olympic Qualification Rankings by one spot. The U.S. will send three men to Tokyo if it maintains three men in the top-30 of the Olympic Qualification Rankings by June 14. Morgan Pearson, who did not compete in Arzachena, is the only U.S. male currently qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team by way of his bronze medal at the World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama on May 15. All remaining spots on the U.S. Olympic Team will be named via discretion by USA Triathlon's Games Athletes Selection Committee after June 14. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MUSK SAYS TESLA MODEL S PLAID DELIVERY DELAYED A WEEK"Delivery for Tesla Inc.’s Model S Plaid will be pushed back a week to June 10, CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet. The car “needs one more week of tweak,” Musk said in explaining the delay." reports Bloomberg: "The Model S Plaid, the automaker’s quickest electric vehicle to date, was scheduled to be unveiled at a June 3 delivery event for customers at its factory in Fremont, California." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-29/musk-says-tesla-s-model-s-plaid-delivery-pushed-back-to-june-10?srnd=markets-vp MKBHD SAYS THE F-150 LIGHTNING IS MUCH BETTER THAN HE EXPECTEDWell-known tech reviewer, long-time Tesla owner Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD) was able to get an exclusive hands-on experience with the upcoming, all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning. Brownlee admits that the F-150 Lightning is better than he expected. Brownlee notes that the F-150 Lightning was quoting him an impressive 367 miles of range, and it only had an 80 percent charge. Based on his math, with a full 100-percent charge, this electric truck with an empty bed should be able to travel some 459 miles." The base model is expected to get just 230 miles, though a version with 300 miles of range will be available. One of the comments notes a follow up video he posted: "He corrected his estimates because the math doesn't add up. He is saying now the extended battery might reach 350-380 miles https://insideevs.com/news/510259/ford-f150-lightning-first-impressions/ ROLLS-ROYCE IS WORKING ON EV CALLED 'SILENT SHADOW'"Rolls-Royce confirmed it is working on an all-new vehicle called Silent Shadow as the ultraluxury brand prepares to offer a full-electric car to its customers this decade. The BMW unit last year filed a trademark with the German patent office for the name Silent Shadow, a nod to the Silver Shadow model sold from 1965 to 1980." says Automotive News Europe: "Regulation is catching up with automakers, with many countries such as the UK planning to ban the sale of combustion-engine vehicles. While the pandemic suppressed vehicle demand in many regions, Rolls-Royce's production run is booked out for the year. Orders started to rise strongly from the fourth quarter of last year as the pandemic unleashed a free-spending attitude, Mueller-Oetvoes said of the company's clients." BYD DELIVERS SPAIN’S LARGEST EVER ELECTRIC BUS ORDERThe Municipal Transport Company of Madrid, EMT Madrid has taken the delivery of the 30 electric buses from BYD, ahead of the programmed hand-over schedule in Spain’s largest-ever single order for electric buses. The upshift in the delivery schedule is even more impressive given the many and varied restrictions on travel, shipping and other logistical complications brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. The hand-over follows an initial 15 BYD 12-metre electric buses delivered to EMT Madrid in May, 2020 – the first time BYD had supplied vehicles into the Spanish capital. Since entering service, EMT Madrid’s 15-strong BYD fleet has topped over 300,000 km, reducing CO2 emissions approximately by 300,000 kg. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/rolls-royce-working-ev-called-silent-shadow TESLA CYBERTRUCK RETRACTABLE SOLAR BED COVER REVEALED IN PATENT"Tesla’s plan for a retractable solar bed cover on its Cybertruck electric pickup truck has been revealed in a new patent application. After the launch of the Cybertruck, CEO Elon Musk surprised many when he said that Tesla’s new electric pickup truck will have a solar roof option that will add 15 miles of range per day." reports electrek: "Now, Tesla’s design for the retractable bed cover with solar cells embedded was revealed in a patent application released today. This is impressive considering it’s apparently strong enough for someone to stand on the cover. Tesla also explains that it can embed solar cells in the tonneau cover" "“A truck bed cover integrated in a vehicle (e.g., a truck), configured to move through an opening formed between a cab and a truck bed, and along a set of channels on the truck bed. The vehicle includes a motor engaged with the truck bed cover and configured to enable an automated movement of the truck bed cover along the set of channels" https://electrek.co/2021/05/27/tesla-cybertruck-retractable-solar-bed-cover-revealed-patent/ TESLA CABIN CAMERA HAS BEEN ENABLED FOR AUTOPILOT DRIVER MONITORING"Several years after Elon Musk said Tesla rejected eye tracking as a method for measuring driver attentiveness because it's "ineffective," owners of new Teslas are receiving vehicles with the feature active. According to notes in the 2021.4.15.11 update, the cabin camera mounted above the rear view mirror will "detect and alert driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged." says engadget: "Tesla hacker Greentheonly has monitored Tesla's progress in developing the software that watches drivers, and showed what early versions of the system can recognize in some demonstration videos. A few other videos posted to social media in recent weeks show that drivers are starting to receive deliveries of the reworked Model S and Model X with a "yoke" steering wheel and other changes, so there may be more tweaks to find very soon." Slashgear points out: "The cabin camera apparently works in conjunction with the original steering wheel sensors, which is probably a good thing for reliability. The update also notes that data from the camera doesn’t get out of the car unless you actually agreed to and enabled data sharing." https://www.engadget.com/tesla-in-car-camera-autopilot-081511875.html https://www.slashgear.com/tesla-cabin-camera-has-been-enabled-for-autopilot-driver-monitoring-27674927/ ‘VIRTUAL POWER STATION’ CREATED BY UK POWER NETWORKS"A ‘virtual power station’ equivalent to the electricity generation of a gas-fired power station, is being created by UK Power Networks. New contracts for energy capacity worth £30 million are being awarded to 17 innovators in the energy, tech and car sector including Octopus Energy, Electric Miles and Ohme, making it the UK’s largest-ever ‘Flexibility’ tender. The far-sighted move is creating new opportunities for batteries and renewable energy with 77% of the capacity coming from low carbon sources." says Autmovei World: "More than two thirds of the new capacity (248 Megawatts) will come from using electric vehicles’ batteries and smart charging when they are hooked up to the power networks.[1] Flexibility providers who have been awarded contracts by UK Power Networks will now recruit up to 25,000 EV owners to support the network in this young and growing market. UK Power Networks, already the largest company to sign agreements for using the power of EVs in the UK, is laying the groundwork now for 2030 when the company estimates that up to 4.5 million new electric vehicles will be connected to the network." AGGREKO SUPPLIES BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM FOR ARGONNE’S EV FAST-CHARGING FACILITY"Aggreko, a provider of mobile and modular energy solutions, has delivered a smart battery storage system to Argonne National Laboratory. Argonne will incorporate the new system into a fast charging facility at its Smart Energy Plaza near Chicago." says ChargedEVs: "The one-Megawatt 30-minute system is designed to enable ultra-fast charging by providing peak power mitigation and power quality services. ANL will also gather data on EV charge profiles exceeding 200 kW to quantify EV and charging system efficiencies, and explore the impact on the grid." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/aggreko-supplies-battery-storage-system-for-argonnes-ev-fast-charging-facility/ SKODA DEALERSHIPS TO RECEIVE USED 2ND LIFE ENERGY STORAGE"Skoda and the Czech technology company IBG Cesko are cooperating to use used batteries from the all-electric Enyaq iV and the PHEV models Superb iV and Octavia iV as stationary storage units at Skoda dealerships." says Chris Randall at electrive: "The energy storage system, manufactured together with IBG Cesko, can hold up to 20 batteries from the Superb iV and Octavia iV PHEV models, each with 13 kWh, or five 82 kWh batteries from the Enyaq iV BEV model. In total, the capacity of the system is up to 328 kWh. According to a statement from Skoda, the storage system can be coupled with a charging station. This works for fast charging stations up to a capacity of 150 kW. Alternatively, dealers could also use the energy storage unit for intermediate storage of green electricity from PV systems, for example, to light and air-condition their premises." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/28/skoda-dealerships-to-receive-used-2nd-life-energy-storage/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you have an opinion on hydrogen power for personal transport? The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Stuff the original tweet was issued in error. "It has since been withdrawn and we have apologised, including to the Indian government, for the misunderstanding it may have caused." EP310: The 2020 Shkreli Awards for the Worst Examples of Profiteering and Dysfunction in Health Care, With Vikas Saini, MD, and Shannon Brownlee

Relentless Health Value

The Shkreli Awards have been published each year, for the past five years and counting, by the Lown Institute. The Shkreli Awards are a much-anticipated top 10 list of the worst examples of profiteering and dysfunction in health care. This year’s list, celebrating the most excellently egregious profiteering in 2020, are unique in the sense that everybody on this list this year—every one of them—decided, deliberately, that a pandemic might be a super opportunistic global stroke of luck to exploit fear and anguish to line their own pockets. The list is named for Martin Shkreli, the price-hiking “pharma bro” that is easy to point to as a model of pure, unadulterated health care profiteering. Here’s the point: Just because you can be clever and shifty enough to make a whole lot of money in health care doesn’t mean you should. Every dollar anyone earns without adding commensurate value back is just one more nail in the financially toxic coffin that patients and employers face in this country—and taxpayers. The Lown Institute is a nonpartisan think tank advocating bold ideas for a just and caring system for health. Their work is centered around four main topics: low-value or unnecessary care, accountability, health equity, and the human connection. In this health care podcast, I am looking so forward to speaking with Vikas Saini, MD, and Shannon Brownlee from the Lown Institute about this year’s Shkreli Award winners. (I wish I had a soundtrack of audience clapping. I’d cue it right now.) There are 10 winners, and we talk about most of them in this episode. You can learn more by connecting with Dr. Saini (@DrVikasSaini) and Shannon (@ShannonBrownlee) on Twitter.  Vikas Saini, MD, is president of the Lown Institute. He is a clinical cardiologist trained by Dr. Bernard Lown at Harvard, where he has taught and done research. He has also been an entrepreneur as scientific cofounder of Aspect Medical Systems, the pioneer in noninvasive consciousness monitoring in the operating room with the BIS device. He was in private practice in cardiology for over 15 years on Cape Cod, where he also founded a primary care physician network participating in global payment contracts. Dr. Saini is board certified in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, and nuclear cardiology. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, where he initiated the first course focused on policy translation for cardiovascular disease prevention. In April 2012, Dr. Saini convened the Avoiding Avoidable Care Conference with the noted author Shannon Brownlee. This was the first major academic conference focused on the problem of overuse of health care services. Dr. Saini led the international writing group of the Right Care series of papers commissioned by The Lancet and published in January 2017. With Ms. Brownlee, he is a convener of the Right Care Alliance, a grassroots network of physicians, nurses, patient activists, and community leaders dedicated to creating public demand for care that is safe, effective, affordable, and just. Dr. Saini has spoken and presented research about avoiding unnecessary care at professional meetings around the world and has been quoted in numerous print media and on radio and television. Shannon Brownlee is senior vice president of the Lown Institute. She and Lown Institute President Dr. Vikas Saini are cofounders of the Right Care Alliance, a network of activist patients, clinicians, and community leaders devoted to organizing a broad-based movement for a radically better health care system. Before joining the Lown Institute, Brownlee served as acting director of the health policy program at the New America Foundation. As a senior fellow at New America, she published the groundbreaking book, Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer, which was named the best economics book of 2007 by the New York Times. She was a senior writer at US News and World Report and Discover Magazine and is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Congressional Commendation, and was named one of “four writers who changed the world” by the World Congress of Science Journalists. Her stories and essays have appeared in such publications as The Atlantic, New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Times of London, Time, New Republic, Los Angeles Times, BMJ, The Lancet, and Health Affairs. Brownlee is a nationally recognized speaker, has been featured in several documentary films, and has appeared on such broadcast outlets as ABC World News, Good Morning America, Fox News, NPR, and The Diane Rehm Show and is quoted regularly in the press. She is the author of several peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and has served on numerous scientific panels, working groups, and roundtables. From 2014-2016, she was an editor of the “Less is More” section of JAMA Internal Medicine and was a lecturer from 2011-2014 at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. She is currently a member of the boards of the Robert Graham Center of the American Academy of Family Practice and Families USA and is a visiting scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Brownlee holds a master’s degree in marine science from the University of California, Santa Cruz. 02:51 “COVID was like … just a glare of x-ray that revealed everything … going on in the health care system.” 05:14 “There’s always profiteering whenever there’s a buck to be made.” 05:33 Is profiteering in the health care system deteriorating? 06:07 How did the winners of the 2020 Shkreli Awards get chosen? 07:18 “The categories that this falls into is really the stakeholders in health care.” 08:11 What did Connecticut internist Steven Murphy, MD, do to earn his place at #8 on the awards list? 09:29 How did big pharma companies (some of which have been developing COVID vaccines) like Pfizer get on the Shkreli Awards list? 11:16 “We do have to start asking some hard questions about who is supposed to benefit from the … public funding that goes into these kinds of products—vaccines and drugs.” 12:49 “The thing about private equity … is that the business model really is profiteering in health care.” 19:43 Why did the federal government win the first place in the Shkreli Awards? 24:13 “Most of this is not illegal. The subject of today’s podcast is something that very rarely gets talked about in triathlon – saddles.  My guest is Daniel Schade, an expert in helping riders find the perfect seat for their ride. Daniel is CEO of Gebiomized who is based in Germany.  If you’re not yet familiar with them, you’ll know the riders they have worked with - Frodeno, Kienle, Brownlee, and Haug to name a few.   I was staggered to realize how underrated the importance of the saddle is. For example, think of your own situation. When considering upgrades for your bike to improve performance, where would the saddle be in your list of priorities, if in the list at all?   This was an eye-opening chat for me and I’m sure it will be for you too. During the conversation, Daniel explains how the company was formed, and their unique pressure mapping system which enables them to create the most comfortable saddle for each rider.  We also discuss: The health and performance impacts of a poor saddle fit How stability and comfort on the saddle have a direct relationship to your aerodynamics The difference between triathlon and road bike saddles 3 biggest saddle errors committed by triathletes, and why you’re probably guilty of at least 2 Why your first equipment upgrade should be the saddle The ‘Secret Saddle Club’ The importance of understanding how you load your saddle If you would like to find out more about Gebiomized, please visit their website HERE To find out specifically about their saddle technology go HERE You can also find them on these social media channels: Instagram - gebiomized YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/gebioMized Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/gebiomized Twitter - @gebioMized   Here are some interesting blog posts that you might like to read On outdoor testing including pressure mapping On comfort increase on the turbo trainer On fusioning aerodynamics and biomechanics in a bikefit project This video also illustrates the ‘saddle shuffle’ we discussed relating to Contador. Valentine’s Day is all about romantic love, but I want to look at it from a different angle today. What if we looked at all of our relationships through the lens of love languages? I am so excited to have all 3 of my sisters on the podcast today as we dive deeper into love languages. We share about our primary love language and some fun stories and examples of how we feel loved. It was fun hearing stories from my childhood as well as some from present day too. We also give lots of practical advice and tools to help us love those with a different love language than us. My goal for this podcast episode is to raise our “other-awareness” and help us learn how to love our family and friends better by becoming aware of what fills their love tank. Honestly, it was so special to talk with each sister, and I cannot wait for you to hear the wisdom they share. Also, I am so excited for someone to win a copy of the *Five Love Languages of Children. Ever read a book, or listened to a audiobook, a story: About those amazingly talented runners from Kenya, Ethiopia… and then some runner from Europe goes there to learn or discover their secret. Is it the diet, the altitude, no hang on it must be the gens, or the desire to escape hardships… Ha ha… sorry to burst your bubble…. actually it is the same reason those Norwegian brothers are such great runners, or the British brothers excel at triathlon. The Norwegians, Henrik, Filip and Jakob Ingebrigtsen, And the British triathlete.. Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee. Spoiler-alert… It is the attitude. Stop being caught in the chicken or egg scenario. The runners in Iten, they set their minds to become the best they can be. They realized their best is far more than they are currently doing and are not shy or scared to create a bigger vision for themselves. This vision then of course takes form, with a coach and training team that would help them get that expert advice they need to succeed on that top level. And of course the runners' need to show progress. And this “create a vision bigger than oneself”.. that can be scary. Actually, then you are doing it right. When was the last time you read do something that scares you and the last time you did. Sidenote: maybe you didn't pick up on it…buying the same wetsuit won't make you swim as fast as Brownlee brother's swim. Oblivious you say. Well, how come you think those shoes the Viking brothers wear will make you a better runner? Now rather than setting a huge target, hey how about just plan to go to your local track. And start to run on it. Simple. The 400-meter circuit, a daunting place if you are not yet fond of it. Stick around to overcome your doubts, pet hates, dislikes, animosities, whatever it is that kept and keeps you away from the track. If there is no track near you. I sincerely doubt it. If not, if you really are not ready for the track… you can of course do a excellent online course. Let me sneak this one in… However, that is what you can learn on our online learning program, a mindset that will empower you to not only dream of newer distances and improved times. It will give your running a new lifeline, and help you enter each training with a mentally powerful resourceful state. Made by runners for runners', it is the only one of its kind. Over 3 hours of video training, all there for the price of a pair of running shoes. And to make sure that you don't just sit in front of your online course… because if you just read about running or brain training for that matter… well, it is like that bucket of paint that is in my cellar. If I don't apply it there is not much use, now let us move to todays topic…. The 400 meters. Heiko I thought this show was about going further. Why do you want to talk about such a short distance, because you my dear listener most probably don't like that distance? Hey, you know what, it is not my favorite distance either, but there is some valuable lessons to be learnt.
