Episode 208 it is .. where the steely grip of starvation takes hold of the amaXhosa nation by December 1856. Self-induced, a response to years of colonial expansion, incroaching land grabs, loss of power of the chiefs and ancient custom, the immediate terror of the 8th Frontier War and its effects, and a mingling of Christianity and traditional magic — an attempt at finding salvation. It was not the first, nor the last millenarian movement of South African history. It was also not the only one of its type at the time in the mid-19th Century, the Taiping Rebellion in China had been bludgeoning its way through the countryside, and there the number of dead would climb to more than 20 million in the decade of that country's disastrous flirtation with sectarianism and mythology. 40 000 Xhosa were going to die of starvation in British Kaffraria and what was known then as Xhosaland. When we left off last episode, King Sarhili of the Gcaleka line, the paramount chief of the Xhosa, had visited the Gxarha river to meet with Mkhazana and Nongqawuse the prophet early in 1857. A quick word about millenarian movements. Most have a particular structure, and are replicated the world over. There is usually the charismatic leader, a figure head. Behind this person are the administrators, the navigators who guide this mishapen ship on it's voyage, almost always towards self-destruction. The causes of millenarianism are diverse, but the overriding similarities lie in all linked to Middle Eastern monotheistic religions intersecting with local ancient rites and cultural norms. They all are characterised by a prophetic leader, a charismatic figure claiming divine insight, all have end-times expectations. Elements of the Christian Nationalist right wing in America have a similar core belief - as the baby boomers approach their end of life, many are convinced its the end-Times for everyone. They have annointed their own charismatic figure who is known as POTUS. Nongqawuse's startling revelations that these ancestors were on the cusp of returning led to the Cattle Killing frenzy. By December 1856 there had been two disappointments, the resurrection had been postponed twice. Still the believers believed. Two harvests had passed, and they did not til their land. Old people living near Peelton Mission station began dying of starvation. Many others were wearing hunger belts, special girdles fastened around the stomach. “Hunger…” wrote Brownlee “is fast closing upon its victims, and though there should be no war, their sufferings will far exceed anything which they have hitherto experienced…”

Have the standards in New Zealand's Parliament been slipping? Between constant interruptions and heckling, name calling, and a haka towards the end of last year, 2024 was filled with events that drew concern about the behaviour of our MPs. Speaker of the House, Gerry Brownlee, told Tim Beveridge that since there is now a party of reasonable size that wants to make cultural expressions that recognise their voters, they need to ask how that fits in. He says there's a lot of tension surrounding it, and they're looking at ways in which they might formalise some aspects so that there isn't the element of surprise or ambush. Brownlee says that in the end, New Zealand has a very safe Parliament, and people shouldn't lose sight of that. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I had Rachel Brownlee on today and she has such an interesting story. You have this individual who had never identified herself as an artist until several years ago, and now she's and award-winning artist.Growing up, she was homeschooled with her seven siblings, living life as a fifth generation Nebraskan rancher (she still is actually). But she finds her voice as an artist and just kind of had this insane, meteoric rise from 2021 until now where she wins the best of show award from the Mountain Oyster Club and starts getting invited to all of these different shows and being represented by important galleries across the West.Fast forward to today and Rachel is this kind of phenomenon in the art world, working with charcoal like nobody has before. A person who had no training in art other than her own ambition to learn and to create like crazy. This is a great story. I mean, it's shows that if you're committed to what you want to do in life, you can absolutely do it with enough hard work. She has two kids, she's married to a rancher and still works the ranch to some extent, but really is now a full-time artist, spending eight plus hours a day drawing in the studio. We go through this whole story of how she got where she is now and what she's currently working on. I myself am very excited that Rachel is going to be a part of my Masters of Drawing Group Exhibition in February 2025.So there you have it. Really interesting story. I hope you like it. I had a great time talking to Rachel Brownlee on episode 325 of the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.

A ground-breaking hīkoi of 42,000 people descended on Parliament today, telling lawmakers to kill ACT's Treaty Principles Bill. It passed its first reading last week in a session punctuated by Te Pāti Māori's Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke leading a fiery haka and being suspended. Bill author, David Seymour, says Parliament Speaker Gerry Brownlee should tighten the rules. Former Speaker David Carter says Brownlee should possibly pass it on to the Standing Orders Committee. "What's very clear as you chair those meetings is - all politicians realise that they may well be in opposition at some stage, so they make rules that actually make our Parliament work." Police say one person was arrested at today's protest. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A former Parliamentary Speaker says standards of the House have slipped in recent years. During debate around ACT's Treaty Principles Bill, Labour's Willie Jackson called David Seymour a liar, while Te Pati Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi compared the party to the KKK. Former Speaker of the House, Sir Lockwood Smith told Mike Hosking that this is “as bad as he's ever seen the House”. He said it was “really sad” to see Parliament. “The whole standard of the place has been lowered in recent years. “Once you start letting it slip, another inch happens, another centimetre.” Smith argued standards had been slipping in the house for a while. “Parliament is meant to be where people we chose to represent us… they are meant to be the leaders of our communities. “Parliament is the highest court in the land, our most respected citizens.” Smith said Brownlee should not be blamed and he had “no choice” but to clear the House. Newsroom won't say why an investigative journalist was initially barred from tomorrow's state apology to survivors of Abuse in Care. Speaker Gerry Brownlee initially declined Aaron Smale's accreditation application, citing undisclosed issues with his conduct on a prior occasion. But after pressure, Brownlee has allowed Smale to attend, if accompanied by a Newsroom journalist. Co-editor Mark Jennings says Brownlee probably didn't have the full story. "He hadn't witnessed any of it himself, he hadn't reviewed any tapes - he was going on the say of other people." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chlöe Swarbrick is confident in the Greens' argument about proportionality of the House being affected by now independent MP Darleen Tana. Party delegates have voted to ask Speaker Gerry Brownlee to oust Tana from Parliament, invoking the waka-jumping law it has previously opposed. It's now down to Brownlee to decide if Tana's resignation from the party —but not Parliament— affects the proportionality of the House. The Green Party co-leader told Mike Hosking she's proud the 185 delegates representing thousands of members all came to the conclusion. She says it was a unanimous and resounding consensus, which demonstrates that the party's moving forward together on the issue. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We discussed his fine, fine work over at Plastic Sax as well as There Stands the Glass, both of which I encourage you to make regular visits to, as the writings are keen and important to the Kansas City music scene. We also talked about a few of Bill's favorite records, which were these:Stevie Wonder's Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974)Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978), Bruce SpringsteenAlison Krauss' Now That I've Found You: A Collection (1995)The College Dropout (2004), Kanye WestMoor Mother's Jazz Codes (2022)Bill's a great Instagram follow if your feed's missing a little something, but beyond you checking out his written work on the aforementioned Web sites, I'm excited for folks to dig in to this conversation. It was a great one.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from a tune called, "Hale to the Man," by Brian Hyland. In this episode, Dr. Kate Balestrieri and Brooke Brownlee, APCC (Clinical Associate at Modern Intimacy) discuss a listener question, about how to navigate a partner's inflation fetish. They address questions about what an inflation fetish involves, how to ensure safety during activities, and how to support a partner's interests without feeling uncomfortable. They also debunk myths surrounding inflation fetishes and provide resources for further exploration. Takeaways - It is common for partners to have mismatched sexual interests, and it is important to approach these differences with curiosity and support. - Engaging in inflation activities can be safe as long as there is consent, communication, and awareness of potential risks. - Supporting a partner's inflation fetish does not require personal arousal, but rather a willingness to understand and participate in a way that feels authentic. - Myths surrounding inflation fetishes, such as associations with child attraction, should be debunked to promote understanding and acceptance. - Self-exploration, open communication, and seeking resources can help navigate and introduce inflation fetishes into the bedroom. Roosevelt Brownlee lives on the curve of a quiet street in Savannah, GA, the tall stalks of okra in his vegetable garden just visible from the side drive. It's one of many such streets in the port city, and only a few minutes from the old City Market area where he spent his earliest years. But in between those two Savannah addresses, Roosevelt has traveled the world, from France to Africa, the Caribbean to Denmark, cooking for everyone from Muddy Waters and Stan Getz to Nina Simone and the Rothchild family. His fried chicken was famous in Europe, his family's red rice recipe honed and tweaked in chateau kitchens. With every deviled crab and pan of mac and cheese, he brought comfort and sustenance to jazz musicians hungry for a taste of home, and at the same time, introduced countless newcomers to the joys of good Southern cooking. Although he's cooked for much of the last two decades in Savannah kitchens, he's mostly retired now, though every so often you can see him at special events in the Lowcountry, big hotel spoon in hand, stirring a pan or a pot of something. If that happens, make sure that you get a taste of what he's cooking. Remember, it's the true stuff of legend.
