Do our personal learning preferences actually affect how well we learn? And what makes learning new skills - like a programming language - so hard in the first place? On this week's episode of Dev Interrupted, we're joined by Hywel Carver, founder & CEO at Skiller Whale. An expert in the principles and practices behind learning and knowledge retention, Hywel walks us through the best learning techniques for engineers. He also discusses how engineering leaders can upskill their teams without hiring additional staff, why modern approaches to learning often fall short (think YouTube), and why there is no evidence to support the idea that personal learning styles, such as visual or kinesthetic, impact learning outcomes.Show Notes:Register for our summer series! Check out Skiller WhaleListen to Skiller Whale's podcast: The Pod Presents: Primarily Context-BasedSupport the show: Subscribe to our Substack Follow us on YouTube Review us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify Follow us on Twitter or LinkedIn Offers: Learn about Continuous Merge with gitStream Want to try LinearB? This episode carries a health warning! It's rather funny. We explore if Hywel (rhymes with towel) and his brother were the real characters in Highway Patrolman. Besides, Joe and Frankie does sound better than Hywel and Alan after all. Jeff and Hywel get together live in the E Street Cafe with one mic and a rather amorous dog. It contains multiple references to Bruce of course - but it also covers all kinds of other random stuff from growing up in the North of England, Nebraska the album, which instrument most attracts attention in the street, soundtracks, Stephen King, Half Man Half Biscuit, playing in a band for fun, Jaws, Botheredness (it's not a real word, we know), Jaws again, early memories of the cinema, how the hell do we pronounce his name and even more Jaws......... Every once in a while we like to lighten the mood and this episode will make you chuckle as Jeff and Hywel combine their northern wit to chat casually about just about anything. Listen out at the end for a twist to the E Street Shuffle. To Hywel's dismay - there's 2 quizzes. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jeff-matthews4/message

Before Davy Gam got famous amongst the English for helping out at Agincourt and getting knighted, and being in general an acceptable Welshman on account of helping out the English and fighting Welshmen, he had killed a kinsman in Brecon, had fought under John of Gaunt, and had fought against Owain Glyndŵr, the leader of the last great Welsh rebellion and the last Welsh Prince of Wales. As you can imagine, a Welshman famous amongst the English for bravely serving them and fighting at Agincourt is not necessarily a Welsh hero. But! He gives Anne an excuse for talking about Owain Glyndŵr, and Michelle an excuse for explaining why John Powys is not as good an author as Tolkien. Also, we discuss how it is that families in an occupied country might well find themselves on different sides of a conflict.

Hywel Carver has been writing code since he was 9 years old. His first language was C, which quite a language to start out in, and his first program was a "Guess the Number" program, using binary search - and of course, with an embedded Easter egg. He is married, with 2 children. Parenting has really pushed him to learn how to focus, and he regularly has to put things down to take care of other responsibilities. One of his biggest hobbies is pub quizzes, which in Britain is a big deal. In fact, he has been on a few quiz shows on TV, including Who Wants to be a Millionaire.Hywel and his co-founders dreamed about a way to distill down the distinct learning moments for you, leading you to the point of inception for skills and wisdom. Hun havde succes udadtil og forkvaklede relationer til sine børn. Adrians brødre er uenige om at tilgive deres mor.
