With a staunchly divided Congress, it can be easy for politicians to focus on dominating the other side, rather than compromising, but is that the best way to create lasting change? Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy is on the podcast today to examine the issues in the modern political landscape, from partisan infighting, the difficulty in electing moderate candidates, and the constant tug-of-war between Republicans and Democrats that often leads us in circles, rather than forward. In this conversation, former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy discusses the current state of the Democratic Party, the challenges faced by President Biden, and the impact of Donald Trump on American politics. He emphasizes the need for authenticity in political leadership and critiques the Democratic Party's approach to candidate selection. McCarthy also reflects on Trump's governance style and the controversies surrounding his administration, advocating for a more strategic and principled approach to politics. McCarthy also discusses various themes including leadership during crises, the transformation of the Republican Party under Trump, ethics in Congress, his personal journey in politics, healthcare and economic policies, America's future challenges, and historical parallels to current events. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexities of leadership and the need for accountability, while also expressing optimism about America's potential and the significance of its foundational ideas. Takeaways The Democrats are currently lost and need to reevaluate their strategies. Trump has significantly shifted the Republican base, especially among Hispanic voters. Kamala Harris's nomination was a strategic misstep for the Democrats. The outcome of the last election hinged on key states like Pennsylvania. Democrats should stop pre-selecting candidates and allow grassroots movements to emerge. Authenticity is crucial for political leaders to connect with voters. Voters are frustrated with the failure of political parties to solve problems. Trump's approach resonates with those who feel ignored by the political establishment. Boeing's handling of the presidential plane situation reflects larger issues in governance. Political leaders must understand the importance of negotiation and setting the right expectations. The role of leadership is crucial in crisis management. Trump's approach has transformed the Republican Party's identity. Ethics and accountability are vital in political leadership. Personal experiences shape political aspirations and decisions. Healthcare policies must consider work requirements for Medicaid. Economic policies should focus on middle-income benefits. America's identity is rooted in its foundational ideas. Democracy can be messy but is essential for progress. Historical lessons can inform current political strategies. Unanswered aggression can lead to further conflict. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#1 New York Times bestselling author Newt Gingrich takes readers inside the most significant political comeback in American history and explains where the Trump movement goes from here.Despite a nine-year effort to destroy him, President Donald J. Trump succeeded in a historic comeback victory in the 2024 presidential election. This was Trump's Triumph. Winning the popular and electoral votes, President Trump became the first president to be nonconsecutively re-elected since President Grover Cleveland. This all happened because President Trump was never a typical political candidate. He is the leader of a movement, which he recognized in the American people. To be clear: President Trump did not invent the Make America Great Again movement, he intuited it.Meanwhile, elites in media, academia, government, and politics learned a big lesson: Americans no longer trust them. President Trump assembled a massive coalition of Americans from all backgrounds who were tired of being told what to do, say, and believe. He made historic in-roads with voter groups which have not traditionally voted for Republicans. President Trump survived court cases, impeachments, outright lies - and two assassination attempts. All the while, the elites described a future which every day Americans did not want. The Joe Biden-Kamala Harris (and later Harris-Tim Walz) tickets represented three failures through which the American people were actively suffering: high inflation, a full-blown immigration crisis, and a prevailing elite ideology which they found at best confusing and at worst insane.Trump's Triumph puts all this into context, explains how President Trump overcame it all, and describes the future of the Make America Great Again movement.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A former Speaker of the House has been worried Parliament's standards have been slipping over the past few years. It comes as the Privileges Committee report on Te Pati Māori's behaviour during last year's Treaty Principles Bill vote, will be debated and voted on this afternoon. It proposes a 21-day suspension for the party's leaders, and a seven-day suspension for MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke. Former Speaker Sir Lockwood Smith told Mike Hosking a decision to close the public gallery is wise. He says this will be a test for Speaker Gerry Brownlee because his judgement will be critical. Smith says it's up to him to make sure this debate, which will be watched by many, shows Parliament to be a better place than it's been in the last couple of weeks. A former Speaker of the House is reminding MPs the rules of the House must be followed. The Privileges Committee have suggested three Te Pati Māori MPs be temporarily suspended from Parliament, ranging up to 21 days, for their role in a haka over the Treaty Principles Bill. Te Pati Māori says these suspensions are the longest in Parliament's history. Sir Lockwood Smith told Ryan Bridge members need to think before they ignore the rules. He says the three-week suspension and missing part of the budget debate will hopefully make people take notice. The recommendation will be put to the House next Tuesday and likely pass. JOURNEY TO AMERICA: WITH NEWT AND CALLISTA GINGRICH, which has been in production since 2023, and was secured by PBS in early 2024, celebrates the achievements of nine individuals from diverse backgrounds who pursued the American dream and contributed to the fabric of our nation -- from Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, who arrived from Italy in 1889, to Maria Daume, who was adopted from a Russian orphanage in 2002 and became the first female Marine to earn a traditional infantry title. The film celebrates their achievements in a nation that, at its best, recognizes that the ideas of freedom and opportunity are still a beacon of hope for so many who come to America."We are and have always been a country of immigrants," Newt Gingrich said about the series. "Immigration has become such a loaded political issue that we often lose sight of the fact that, as a country, we've significantly benefitted from the hard work and creativity of generations of immigrants who legally migrated to our country.""JOURNEY TO AMERICA is a celebration of our diversity and a reminder that regardless of one's political ideology, we're a better country when the contributions of legal immigrants are recognized," said Callista Gingrich. "In JOURNEY TO AMERICA, we want to assure viewers that the American dream is alive and well in communities across our nation.""We're very excited to bring this film to PBS because we hope to have this conversation with people across America, regardless of where they live, their politics, or their background," Newt Gingrich added."Ambassador and Speaker Gingrich have created a personal and visual essay that asks us to pause and reflect on the journeys of immigrants who have contributed so greatly to the larger American story," said Sylvia Bugg, PBS Chief Programming Executive & GM of General Audience Programming. "These are stories of hardship, challenges, creativity, perseverance, patriotism, and joy, American stories that help us better understand who we are as a nation."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
