A former Speaker believes suggested punishments for three Te Pāti Māori MPs falls short. Parliament's Privileges Committee has recommended suspensions for the three - for their protest haka during voting on the Treaty Principles Bill. Parliament will vote next Tuesday on whether to suspend the co-leaders for 21 days, and MP Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke for seven. David Carter says the haka was 'intimidating' and 'unacceptable'. "And then to refuse to appear before the Privileges Committee - again, it's yet another contempt of the rules of Parliament." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The assisted dying bill is about to undergo detailed scrutiny by the Public Bill Committee - a group of 23 MPs tasked with reviewing the Bill's text and proposing amendments to refine and improve it. But what exactly happens during this amendment process? Former House of Commons Clerk, Paul Evans CBE, breaks it down. Plus, we hear from Dr Ben Spencer MP, a former consultant psychiatrist turned parliamentarian, who has proposed dozens of amendments to the Bill. This week, Ruth is joined by procedural expert Paul Evans to break down the role and purpose of a Public Bill Committee. They explore how amendments are proposed, the rules that determine which amendments are admissible, and the grouping and selection of amendments for debate and decision. Paul explains the pivotal role played by the Committee chair in making fine procedural and political judgements and the mechanisms like ‘closure' motions that keep the process moving and guard against filibustering. What is the Government's role in this process. While officially neutral, Ministers have a ‘duty to the statute book'. So, will they step in to propose amendments, or will that responsibility fall to the Bill's sponsor, Kim Leadbeater MP? Plus, we explore the tactical side of law making: is it smarter to push amendments now, or save them for the next stage when the Bill returns to the full Commons for the Report stage? We also sit down with Dr Ben Spencer MP, the Conservative MP for Runnymede and Weybridge. He voted against the Bill at Second Reading and discusses why he thinks the Private Members' Bill process is not the right route for this complex legislation. Despite his opposition to the Bill, and although he's not a member of the Public Bill Committee, he has nonetheless tabled several dozen amendments. One of his key proposals? The creation of a new body — the Assisted Dying Agency — to oversee the process. He shares why he's pursuing these amendments, how he's crafting them, and how he hopes to influence the Bill's progress from outside the Committee room.

Days after Republican candidate Donald Trump won the US presidential election, former House speaker Nancy Pelosi blamed Joe Biden for not leaving the race sooner. Pelosi suggested that there could have been an open primary to determine Biden's replacement if he'd stepped aside earlier, and she claimed Biden's decision to endorse Kamala Harris four months from the election foreclosed that possibility. US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says the Democrats have been pointing fingers to determine what went wrong last week - but he's got a theory as to what went wrong. "I think the Democrats underestimated a majority of the country. I think they were focused on what we call the left and the right coasts out here - California and New York - and they forgot the heartland of America, the Midwest and parts of the south." Former bandmates of the late Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician, Denny Laine, just released a new tribute version of one of Laine's signature songs, Time To Hide, to coincide with what would have been Laine's 80th birthday, October 29. The song, released under the artist name McDonald's Farm, will feature Steve McDonald, Grant Roberts and Laine's former Wings bandmate Steve Holley, with keyboards and production by Graeme Watt at the Seagate Studio Dundee. Through the magic of digital recording technology, it will also feature Laine on harmonica taken from the last time he performed on stage with them. When producing the accompanying music video, the assistance and generosity of Paul McCartney's company, MPL Communications, was invaluable in allowing Graeme Watt who produced the video the use of both photos and video footage of Denny with Paul and Linda McCartney from his time in Wings. This was combined with footage from Denny's later years playing with Steve and Grant at London's Marquee Club and The Old Trout in Windsor (sadly no longer there). To complete Time To Hide, the cover artwork was created by world famous artist Shannon MacDonald. It captures the man, the musician, and the vision of Denny in a spectacular new painting.https://mcdonaldsfarmband.com/homehttps://www.facebook.com/mcdonaldsfarmbandDenny performing Time To Hide on Rock Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nLYtVrUf6Y

Live—from the campus of Hillsdale College in beautiful Hillsdale Michigan— this is Scot Bertram in for Steve on the Steve Gruber Show for   –Wednesday December 20th 2023—   —Here are 3 big things you need to know—   One —  Former President Trump says the decision of the Colorado Supreme Court to ban him from the state's 2024 Presidential ballot is a completely flawed decision.  The Colorado Supreme Court said on Tuesday he violated the 14th Amendment's insurrectionist ban on January 6th, 2021 when he encouraged the violent demonstrations at the U.S. Capitol. Trump had earlier won similar cases in Michigan and Minnesota.   Two—  Americans are less satisfied with nearly every major part of the health care system.  That's according to a recent analysis from Gallup, which found that satisfaction has dropped since 2010.  Hospitals, drugmakers, and physicians took some of the biggest hits in the survey.     And number three — Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is submitting his official resignation.  In a statement read aloud to the House, McCarthy wrote it was the honor of a lifetime to represent the public.  McCarthy made history as the first Speaker to be formally removed from the post.  His resignation is effective December 31st.
