I have my reservations about the Government's new fast-track laws, because it encourages that whole “do something for the sake of doing something” mentality. And my reservations are only being amplified with this news that Christchurch City Council staff want to use the fast-track legislation to get on with the job of rezoning the land where the old temporary stadium is, in Addington, so it can be sold to developers. It's not the legislation itself that I'm concerned about today. I'm concerned that the city council hasn't thought this through enough. Because, even though I love One New Zealand Stadium just as much as the next person, I think it would be a mistake to put all our eggs in one basket. And I can see a time when we might actually regret deciding to do away with the facility at Addington.Because, even though the Crusaders match at the stadium tonight is another sell-out, which is brilliant, it's not always going to be the case. So wouldn't it make sense for us to keep the grounds at Addington? I'm coming around to thinking that it would. So, what's happened is council staff are recommending to councillors that they ask Resource Management Minister Chris Bishop to fast-track a change to the land's zoning. That would let the site be used for things like retail and housing. I gather it would also allow car parking and parks of some sort. If city councillors agree with council staff and do go to Chris Bishop, and he agrees to use the fast-track legislation, that would mean most of us would be excluded from the process. Things would happen much quicker, six months compared to two years, but only those affected by the change would get to have a say. And you can bet that the definition of those directly affected would be pretty narrow. That's why I think that, before the council runs off to Chris Bishop and fast-tracks things so it can sell off the land, we need to calm the farm a bit and work out whether it is actually a good idea to get rid of it or not. And I'm not convinced that it is. When Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine was in town the other week for the Super Rugby Pacific Super Round, he was telling me that the temporary stadium is a brilliant venue for football, because of the shape of it, apparently. But also the capacity. In fact, he was saying that he would love to pick it up and move it to Wellington. That's how good he thinks it is. So why would we get rid of it? What's more, who has the council actually spoken to about this? I know the rugby league people would probably love to return there. What about Mainland Football? Maybe they'd like to see the Addington stadium kept on. See what I mean? There's been this assumption over the years that, because we've considered it to be the “temporary” stadium, it would go once the new one is up and running. And that seems to be what city council staff are thinking too, with this recommendation that they try to get things fast-tracked. There's no denying that flogging it off would bring in some coin for the council. It's got a rateable value of $6.6 million. But if it was rezoned for housing, it would be worth $26 million. Nevertheless, is that something we should even be doing? I don't think it is, until we have a much better understanding of whether there might actually be a need for a second, smaller stadium, and not just the shiny new one. We now say goodbye to what was only ever supposed to be a temporary venue but has become a fortress for the Crusaders and a graveyard for anyone who tried to go there and win. Seven championship winning seasons were played there from 2017 to 2023 – another one last season. A place that came to represent something far greater than a place to watch the Crusaders. It's only when you go to Christchurch to watch the Crusaders play that you fully realise what this team means to its region. For a city that's had to endure so much, the Crusaders have been a uniting force. A symbol of togetherness. And they have provided a distraction from the often challenging lives of those who inhabit that great city. It feels like the new stadium is the final piece in the rebuild puzzle. After what they've endured in the 15 years since that dreadful day in February 2011, the opening of a new stadium signifies the completion of a long road back to normality. Christchurch is now complete once more. Now of course there's a tendency to look at things like this with a sense of misty-eyed romanticism and overlook the faults of Addington. It's a bit hard to get to. Very, very cold. Short on modern-day facilities for the teams, sponsors, media, and the fans. But the legacy of that so-called temporary stadium will be as significant as what Lancaster Park was, and what Te Kaha will almost certainly become. In the midst of difficulty and destruction and despair, Addington brought people together. It provided pockets of joy to a city that badly needed them and came to represent much, much more than just a place to watch a game of rugby. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Crusaders are hoping their new home at One NZ Stadium won't take away one of their greatest advantages. The most successful team in Super Rugby history will play a final match at their 14-year stop-gap stadium in Addington tomorrow night when they tackle the Drua. Christchurch's Court Theatre is selling off a collection of oddities including props, costumes and even a fake horse? The theatre lost its home at the Art Centre after the 2011 earthquake and moved to a shed in Addington. Unpacking Inclusion, Control, and Affection: A Clinical Look at the Structures of Power and Systemic Trauma. How can communities collectively imagine self-determination and liberation from systemic domination? This episode tackles that question by examining the "moral imaginary" required to move past our current social chaos. Mel Hoover sets the stage by citing James Baldwin's 1963 reality check: “We made the world we're living in and we have to make it over.” The panel explores how the truth of our lived experience has been covered up by dehumanizing ideologies, undermining our capacity to pursue an equitable future. To understand this landscape, the guests introduce a clinical framework for evaluating community health through three core principles: Inclusion, Control, and Affection. Dr. Bill Gardiner traces the history of "who is in and who is out" back to the Naturalization Act of 1790, which legally defined citizenship based on whiteness. The panel connects this history to modern-day voter "integrity" efforts and the habitual use of power—and often violence—to suppress successful, interracial movements like the "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa or the Battle of Blair Mountain. Finally, the group defines Affection as heartfelt, emotional connections that can only blossom once Inclusion is addressed and Control (power) is shared. The conversation concludes with a call for authentic solidarity, encouraging listeners to heal collective trauma by having "skin in the game."
Joy Gilfilen, co-host Karen Ball and our panel continue a deep historical reflection following their clinical analysis of the historical structures of law in episode #221, this session shifts the focus to the immediate present. The panel examines the social turmoil and confusion in our streets and headlines today, arguing that these are not isolated incidents of unrest. Instead, they represent the predictable breaking point of a globalized logic of dominance, and the pathologies of historical amnesia, social anesthesia, and collective denial. In this episode, James Addington, author of Tragic Investment, explains how the artificial fabrication of race continues to sabotage communities and jeopardize our learning to think and feel like ancestors. He invites listeners to grapple with the dynamics of racialization and its connection to power and how that plays out.Bill describes the colonization process where western European countries sent ships to subdue people living in other geographic locations and imposed their image of government control. This process was brutal and extractive. This historical theme has continued to today and Mel points out that it is time to intentionally change our vision and create a new story for the generations to come.Join us as we learn to see the world through a lens of restorative justice and uncover the tools necessary to transform our present.

Cameron reflects on the past year as State FFA President...
Now, surely, it should be a straightforward exercise. You're about to embark on a relationship with someone, and you want to do a police check. Does this person have previous convictions for violence? Seems charming, seems a lovely, but you hear horror stories. So, why wouldn't you want to check on somebody before you invite them into your life? Why can't you know? Surely, once you have a conviction for an offence, it becomes a matter of public record. And there might be people who say, "Well, what about the privacy? What about the privacy concerns of offenders who have done their time?" I think we need to stop being concerned about the privacy of offenders and start being concerned about the safety of individuals, especially women and children who are generally the ones who end up most damaged. A man who harassed and stalked a woman, hid behind a tree waiting for her to get home with her children before fatally stabbing her 55 times. In 2012, Nathan Bolter was jailed for eight years and six months for kidnapping and assaulting his ex-girlfriend over a 38-hour ordeal on Great Barrier Island. In November of this month, he pleaded guilty in the High Court at Christchurch to murdering another woman. Had she known about his previous convictions, you'd have to wonder about whether she would have entered into a relationship. He was recalled to prison. Presumably that's when she found out about it because she terminated the relationship and that's when he went ballistic. I have another one for you. Colombian national, Juliana Bonilla-Herrera, was attacked and stabbed to death in her Addington flat by Joseph James Brider in January 22, after he was paroled to the flat next door. She knew nothing of his criminal history of sexual violence. She wasn't warned. I have another one. I could go on and on. This is particularly vile. An Australian deportee who murdered two women in Oz in the 80s was jailed a few years ago for 16 years for sexual assault. Johnny Harding received the prison term for 19 charges including sexual violation and assault. The offences were mostly against two young sisters. He had entered a relationship with the children's mother, then offended against the children. To ensure the children didn't tell, he used violence and threatened to harm their mother if she knew. I could go on and on, but I won't. You get the picture. There are so many examples. Google can only tell you so much about a person. If you're an employer, you can do a police check, and that's relatively simple. You get the signed consent of the employee; you then fill out a form online. You have to be registered as an agency authorised to request police vetting. You submit the request online, you get the results back - clean as a whistle, absolutely nothing wrong with this person, go for it. If you want to check the background of someone you're bringing into your life, your home, your children's home, and your bed, it's a lot more difficult. The then-National Government put a scheme in place in 2015, the FVIDS, and that was designed to allow people concerned for their own or their family's safety to be made aware of a person's history of family violence. Police officers could also instigate disclosure to a person of concern using the scheme. So say if they had concerns about Juliana in Christchurch, the fact that she had a dangerous sexual offender moving in next door, might have been nice to tell her. The scheme, the FVIDS, followed similar initiatives overseas. However, in this country, when victims and family violence support workers attempt to apply for the information, they're being turned away by police who don't seem to know that the scheme exists. They don't know that it's there. And even when they do know, there's no online portal to help people to apply for the scheme. It can take up to three visits in person to a police station. How much do you need to know and how much do you want to know? We had a caller whose daughter was being very in a relationship with a man who was being very coercive. And he knew something was up. This was only a couple of weeks ago, you might remember him. And he said, "No, this isn't good. You've got to come home." And he owned the house that his daughter and the chap were living in. And when he started making inquiries about this guy, whose behaviour was suspect, he found out that he had form. Done it before to other women. And he wanted her out of there now, and he wanted the guy out of the house. And how did he best go about doing that? How much do you need to know? How much do you want to know, and how easy is it to get that information? Might not be you. You might have sparkly eyes, and you've just met the girl or the boy of your dreams, and you think they're absolutely amazing. Parents or friends might think, "Really?" When something's too good to be true, it generally is. I don't know about this one. How much should you be entitled to know? I would say that the death list would indicate that the concern for the safety of families, men, women, and children, should absolutely override the privacy of convicted offenders. It was a big day for racegoers at the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting at Addington in Christchurch. The Cup, with a purse of $1 million is one of New Zealand racing's pinnacle events. Sports reporter Bridget Tunnicliffe spoke to Lisa Owen.
It was a sunny Canterbury Spring day for this year's New Zealand Trotting Cup, as thousands streamed through the gates at Addington Raceway. It's one of the biggest days on the country's racing calendar, attracting more than 15 thousand people for a flutter, fashion and fun. Keiller MacDuff reports.
Everything is looking up for one of the biggest days on Christchurch's social calendar. New Zealand's Cup Day is kicking off, with around 13 thousand punters expected to watch horse racing, fashion shows, and live music at Addington Raceway. Despite the early morning rain, Addington Raceway Chief Executive Brian Thompson told Mike Hosking he's confident about how the day will turn out. Leighton is once again joined by golf course architect Thad Layton of Thad Layton Design to explore a recent architectural study trip. Fresh off an incredible 20+ course tour of southern England and the Midlands, Thad shares the motivations behind the trip, how he organized it, and the design lessons he's bringing back to his own work. Many architects make this journey to the UK, but the focus here was on courses of southern England—some designed by the most notable names in golf architecture, and others by architects less well known but equally influential. The conversation also explores the huge variety of golf course styles he encountered along the way, from downland and links to the classic English heathland. You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionWe take a look at how the Napoleonic Wars broke out. Napoleon had a different understanding of the world situation than the Addington government and the British public. We also examine the failure of Russia to mediate between the two powers. We go into both the understanding of the British for why restating the war was a good idea, and Napoleon's of keeping the peace. In the end Napoleon would haver had to concede a commercial treaty, but he was convinced he needed to protect French industry from British competition. And so, 12 years of war ensue.
Ryan Noades joins us today to take a look at what may very well be JF Abercromby's design opus. The Addington was of course a collaboration between Abercromby and Harry S Colt, expertly routed to circumnavigate a sand and gravel hilltop heathland site some 9 miles due south of central London. The Noades' have owned the Addington since 2006 and have lovingly curated the course ever since. Over the years it became apparent to Ryan and his family that a world class golf course was hiding in plain site beneath the organic detritus that had invaded playing corridors, reduced strategic options and hampered firm and fast playing conditions. In 2019 in conjunction with the design firm Clayton De Vries & Pont a course correction was undertaken to commit fully to a faithful restoration of The Addington to its' former glory. We endeavour to explore a small part of this journey today, hopefully leaving you with a better feel for both the place and indeed a driven individual who is equally besotted, energised and excited by all of the possibilities that The Addington represents. Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the show! You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionWe are covering 1801. The 3 key issues are: Pitt resigns over catholic emancipation. He is replaced by his friend Addington. Pitt is to Addington as London is to Paddington. This strange interlude is illustrative that though Pitt may not be in office, Pittites commonly are for the rest of the 2nd Hundred Years War. Napoleon begins his peace offensive. It starts with the end of the Quasi War with the United States. but extends to the Concordat and ends up with France again in possession of Louisiana.Because it looks as if peace is inevitable; Britain must take Egypt. The British conquest of Egypt foreshadows the return of the British infantry to an elite status and demonstrates the power of Napoleon's vision for the Orient (in reverse). 6,000 men are landed by Hope Popham on the Red Sea coast from India.
