Today, I'm so honored to have none other than Sophie Gamand on the show. Sophie is an animal advocate, artist, and award-winning photographer. You might know her from her stunning, powerful Pit Bull Flower Power series or her Wet Dog series. She does her work pro bono for non-profits, rescues, and shelters to communicate the idea of dogs having agency and she does it through photography.Sophie shares her experience about awakening to the world of rescue in Puerto Rico, her commitment to helping shelters and rescues, and how vital it is to use art for good. We discuss our shared deep connection to animals, how her journey got started, the stigma around adoption, and why certain breeds have come to reflect a person's status. This is a very open, honest, and raw conversation about dog breeding and more. In the end, it's Sophie's work that she hopes can help change the negative narrative Pitbulls unfairly carry and it's animals in her life who encourage her to keep going. They do that for me too, and for you - and so, this episode is friendship.Join The Animal That Changed You community on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook -- we're waiting to welcome you! Sophie Gammand's story is one of serendipity. Sophie is a photographer - you may know her from her Pitbull Flower Power series - which went viral and, in the process, helped many Pitbulls in shelters. Her serendipitous start came one day when she was walking down the street to shoot a project for a photography class she was taking. Her task was to shoot people on the streets of NYC. A man presented himself, asking her to photograph him - upon which Sophie says she "chickened out" and essentially ran the other way. Fully uncomfortable with the prospect of shooting strangers, Sophie decided to visit a nearby veterinarian's office - and her subjects ended up being dogs, not humans. From here, as they say, the rest is history. Since then, Sophie has gone on to publish books, amass a massive social media following, and, most importantly - helped many Pitbulls and other dogs in shelters with her flower power portrait series. Sophie and I had a really fun conversation - both having had the immigrant experience, both moving to NYC and taking up photography when we arrived, and a mutual love of dogs and Pitbulls. We talked about the bad rap that Pitbull type dogs get, the media propaganda that caused the biased dialogue around the breed, how she came up with the ideas for her portrait series, and much more. This was my longest episode to date. I felt as though we still had so much more to cover. Perhaps, in the future, Sophie will come back on the podcast. Enjoy the Podcast My Take - Pitbulls are some of the most misunderstood dogs out there. They are actually exceptionally sweet and get along well with kids and babies. I'm glad Sophie saw through the media disinformation campaign and decided to dedicate so much of her time/career to help change hearts and minds. If you do something with your heart, you will be rewarded on many fronts. Sophie Gamand Sophie's Patreon Comments, requests or questions, please reach out - my email is roybntz@gmail.com

You know Sophie for being a viral sensation with her incredible artwork and photography. She is an advocate for rescue dogs most especially for bully breeds.  Did you know that pitbulls are the breed that is most likely be euthanized when they end up at an animal shelter? Sophie is the author of Wet Dog and Pitbull Flower Power. Her work is widely shared on social media @sophiegamand. Her new Pitbull Flower Power coffee table book is one of the best dog books that I’ve ever seen because it features her incredible work as well as the stories of these pups and these shelters who care for these pups. Sophie shares her background, her early work in photography, about her family and she shares about how her move to New York challenged her creatively which was the genesis for both her Wet Dog project and Pitbull Flower Power. Sophie was afraid initially of pitbulls so when she challenged herself to work with rescue dogs in shelters she challenged herself to work with the bully breeds. She conceived of a new artistic venture where she would create flower crowns to put on these pitfalls and take portraits of the pups to help support in their adoption.  Sophie has captured these photos and travels to shelters all over. Her craft and ability to work with these rescues highlights the realities of dog rescue. This also includes traveling to Puerto Rico that was an overwhelming amount of dogs up for rescue. Sophie even ended up adopting her pup MacLovin from a rescue in Puerto Rico on some pretty horrific circumstances. We’ve split the conversation with Sophie into two episodes. She is such an incredible advocate of both rescue and advancing the perception of pitbulls. Enjoy this conversation with Sophie. Please rate, share and subscribe to The Woof Life Show!

Our Pit Bull series begins on Thursday, August 25. Join us!! Some of our upcoming guests Noelani Guerrero http://www.urbansuburbanapparel.com Zach Skow http://www.marleysmutts.org Belinda Morrison http://www.bemorefitness.com Dr. Sara Kelly http://cenlaanimals.com Sophie Gamand http://www.sophiegamand.com We hope you take the time to learn more about pit bulls and some of the people who work hard to rescue these wonderful dogs. Each dog is an individual, so one suggestion we make is to take the time to get to know your animal. You might find that pit bulls are terrific companions and are ready to change your life in a positive way. The overcrowded conditions in many animal shelters often highlights the problems pit bulls present for animal rescue. They are some of the most overbred dogs, and because of their controversial reputation of dog bites and association with dog fighting, are sometimes considered less desirable by prospective adopters. This can cause tremendous suffering, as some pit bulls stay in shelters for years, or are euthanized. You'll hear stories of those who work with pit bulls directly and listen to their experiences with animals of all sorts, including pit bulls. Thanks to Peter Zheutlin for the connection to Dr. Sara Kelly. http://peterzheutlin.com Thanks to Dave Lee for the recommendation on Zach Skow. https://modernlifepodcastnetwork.com If you want to join our animal rescue community and receive two free bonus dog-training resources from Irith Bloom, positive reinforcement dog trainer, go to http://thisispawprint.com/ask.
