We are so honored to have gotten to interview Zach Skow for today's episode, someone that we've admired from afar for a very long time. Zach is the founder of Marley's Mutts dog rescue and The Pawsitive Change Program, which pairs shelter dogs with incarcerated people for training and rehabilitation. Well over 1,000 incarcerated people have graduated the Pawsitive Change program to date, which boasts a virtually 0% recidivism rate for graduates as compared to the US National average of 73%. In today's episode, Zach shares with us all about his journey through addiction and liver failure, to somehow beating all of the odds and getting sober at 29. He credits his three dogs for being the motivation and love he needed to survive through near life-ending health issues related to his alcoholism, and is truly a walking miracle. This conversation is a powerful one fueled by hope, faith, community and sheer will. We hope you enjoy it! *Trigger warning: We discuss and allude to sexual abuse in this episode. I'm honored to host a truly remarkable guest, Zach Skow, whose life story and work exemplify the transformative power of sobriety and compassion. Zach is more than just a survivor; he is a beacon of hope and change. As the founder of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue and the visionary behind the Pawsitive Change Program, Zach has leveraged his passion for animals to foster healing and redemption. His innovative approach, which pairs rescue dogs with inmates, facilitates life-changing bonds and promotes mutual healing and growth. Zach's journey is also deeply personal. As someone who has maintained sobriety, he embodies the resilience and commitment we celebrate on this podcast. His experiences, challenges, and triumphs in the realm of sobriety provide profound insights and inspiration to us all. Today, we'll learn how exploring sobriety has fueled his mission and how the unconditional love of dogs can lead to profound personal transformation. [04:23] Before getting sober, Zach's life was completely dedicated to drugs and alcohol. He spent a lot of time making sure he had enough drugs and alcohol to get through the day. [05:40] He spent a lot of time in the solitude of self-hatred. [07:51] He also had terminal depression and he now wonders how he got through it.  [08:04] Zach shares the moment that propelled him into sobriety. He was in acute liver failure and everything was going wrong. He needed a transplant and was trying to cope with his own mortality. [11:04] Things were so bad, he couldn't control anything except for the suicidal thoughts that he was obsessed with. [13:36] He was at rock bottom and didn't even recognize himself, but his dogs knew he was still there. [15:57] One glance from his dogs during this terrible time in his life, made all the difference. He stayed up with the dogs, watched the sunrise, journaled, and committed to doing better. [16:38] Everyday of his life since then has been dedicated to helping dogs. He found a profound purpose outside of himself.  [17:23] Having a purpose outside of himself allowed him to embrace sobriety. He also had to stay sober for 6 months to get a liver transplant. He had to walk, change everything about his diet, and find a will to live. [18:44] When your energy and mind and spirit are elsewhere, you are required to be present.  [19:28] He also attended 12-step groups and got tools that he needed to stay sober. [21:03] He also discovered that he liked himself. [23:30] At first, sobriety was just the means to get a liver transplant, now it's the most important thing in Zack's life. [27:02] Dogs really made a difference in his recovery, especially in the beginning. You need to introduce structure into a dog's life, so they can be adopted. A person in recovery also needs structure. [30:22] Marley's Mutts was born out of Zach's struggle to get a liver transplant. He was working with the dogs while waiting for the transplant. After six months, he didn't need the transplant anymore. [33:02] He started an animal rescue. Marley's Mutts has been around since April of 2009. They have 30 employees, over 100 dogs, and have found homes for more than 10,000 dogs. [34:55] Zach talks about the four programs that are part of Marley's Mutts including the Pawsitive Change Program. [35:04] The Pawsitive Change Program came about when one of his buddies adopted a dog after coming out of prison. The dog ended up changing the former inmate's life. [37:09] There's something about a dog that represents love, compassion, and home. Bringing dogs into the prison really helps with rehabilitation. [39:13] Zach shares a story about a dog named Smokey who would bite people. Smokey was paired up with an inmate named Jason. Smokey was afraid, Jason introduced him to the world in a new way and kept his needs in mind. [41:47] Smokey and Jason ended up being rehabilitated. [43:18] Every prison should have a Pawsitive Change Program. [45:05] Build your dog's routine into your own healthy routine. This episode is about an inspiring, heartfelt and miraculous story of Zach Skow, the founder of Marley's Mutts and Pawsitive Change Program. Zach shares his battle with addiction, a life-threatening diagnosis, his process through recovery, and how he is now living in purpose and service for saving dogs and people. At a young age Zach Skow struggled with self-love and acceptance, leading him down a dark path of drug and alcohol abuse. He hit rock bottom and was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease. With three months left to live, but six months of sobriety required to qualify for a transplant, it appeared to be a death sentence. But somehow he was able to find solace in his dogs, and pushed through. He got better, and afterward started Marley's Mutts – a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, trains and re-homes death row dogs from Kern County's high-kill animal shelters, which he still runs to this day.  In this episode: Zach drives deep into how his love for his dogs and their unwavering acceptance of him pulled him through the darkness and brought him back to life Finding strength during suicidal thoughts How connecting with a power greater than himself has helped him through adversities  How he has been able to rebuild his life through sobriety and the service of others Why Marley's Mutts is not only an animal shelter, but is a positive force for change in the community How the Pawsitive Change Prison Program works to take rescue dogs into local prisons to train with inmates and give both a second chance and much more I hope you will be inspired, moved, and liberated by the impact and courage Zach shares with us today. * Please help support Marley's Mutts by purchasing the children's Christmas book, 'Chance The Blue-Nosed Reindeer'. Welcome to the Sober is Dope Podcast with your host, POP Buchanan. In this episode we cover topics on Sobriety, Rock Bottom, Recovery, Addiction, Service, 12 Steps, Love, Acceptance, and going back to the basics in recovery. Our special guest and sober superhero is the one and only Zach Skow; Founder of Marley's Mutts. https://www.marleysmutts.org/themanbehindthemutts/ Zach Skow was diagnosed with end stage liver disease in July of 2008. At this point, he didn't care much what that meant, only that he could continue living day to day as he had been-constantly drunk, constantly numb. Zach explains in hindsight that his inebriated state was his baseline-this was his normal, and a necessity to his everyday life. He needed to be drunk to drive, to work, and certainly to interact with other people, especially if those other people were new faces. Without alcohol, he was vulnerable and scared-much like the dogs he now rescues from shelters daily. When Zach walks into a shelter, he sees himself in the destitute dogs, and they in him. He knows intimately what it is like to feel worthless and unwanted. He felt like a "throwaway human", and to most people, the dogs in the most hard-knock shelters are throwaway dogs. He tells that he had begun a life dedicated to transformation, and the dogs were a parallel existence in which he could find meaning and progress that he often didn't find in himself. And now, these dogs and Zach work together, creating magic out of fear and rejection, lifting each other up and infusing an infinite amount of love into their surroundings wherever they may be. Zach's ultimate wakeup call came in October 2008, when he resolved to take on life without the crutch of alcohol. The inception of Marley's Mutts coincided with this decision. Through working with the Humane Society, Zach knew that he had a connection with rescue dogs and had fostered several, but he saw a hole in the world of rescue-no one was taking on the really tough cases. The giant Mastiffs, the mangled and mangy mutts, the aggressive and the scared. . . Marley's Mutts would be a home (albeit a temporary one) for these "undesirables." What happened in the process though is that Zach and the Marley's Mutts crew has begun to change the conversation surrounding these types of dogs. They relentlessly educate and inform their followers and fans (350,000 and growing!) to let them know that the dogs are not the problem, but the training and circumstance. The crew at Marley's Mutts provides training resources to dog owners too, to help prevent new problems from arising. The holistic approach to dog rescue extends even to the community and to their ambitious future goals. Marley's Mutts has plans to expand their human/ canine programs in which rescued dogs will help to rehabilitate people-prisoners, addicts, the mentally challenged. Zach calls the symbiotic relationship between the people and the dogs a "benevolent mechanism" which he experienced first hand, and plans to focus on and fully utilize in the future of the rescue. Today, Zach is healthy-he has worked hard to create a lifestyle in which his liver can heal, and his focus on a work of pure service keeps him grounded and connected to a purpose. Zach knows that he owes his life to the dogs, and through Marley's Mutts, he makes good on a daily debt of gratitude that is truly a labor of love and his life's highest calling. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Amy Klein Full Bio: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6979155/bio Intro Zooland: https://youtu.be/ecUYguN2168 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soberisdope/message

This week I am speaking with Zach Skow, founder of Marley's Mutts and The Positive Change program. I first became aware of Zach through the Pawsitive Change Instagram page, and admittedly, I had some preconceived notions about the incarcerated, but after watching their videos and stories, as well as having experienced the transformational healing nature of dogs in my own life, through my two rescues, I quickly found my perspective changing and really saw the power in the work they were doing not only to change the lives of those participating in the program, but also to shift societal perceptions as a whole. As you will hear in our conversation, Pawsitive Change is about much more than photo ops and Instagram posts, and regardless of where you land on the greater issue of incarceration and how we as a society view, as well as treat people who have served time in prison, it's impossible to deny that they are making a very positive impact on a very under served segment of society. And that's not even taking into account the residual affect the program has had on the participants families, as well as race relations within the prison walls. And all of this work is made possible through private donations as incredibly they get no federal or state funding.Zach's personal journey is equally as powerful as the work he is doing with Positive Change, but I'll let you hear it in his own words. So with that, here's Zach Skow on The Days Between..

Zach has an extremely inspiring story to tell you about how dogs and rescues saved his life. He talks about the Pawsitive Change Prison Program, which is an intensive program that works with incarcerated individuals to rehabilitate people and pets through vulnerability, making a significant impact on those released and reintegrated into society. Then, he shares shocking statistics about incarceration in the US and how the government can help rescues and prisons make positive impacts in the world. “Incarcerated people and pets are my jam. That is what I focus all of my time on, that is what my life is dedicated to, and I feel very blessed and honestly fortunate to have that purpose to plug myself into.” - Zach Skow Tune in to learn about Zach's journey of spontaneous entrepreneurship and how his non-profits have been affected by covid-19. He shares about how dogs have helped him connect to unconditional self-love and self-confidence, as well as what goals and projects he's working on this year in 2021. “For me, the silver lining of all this is we've been able to introduce a cross-section of our society, our culture, in black and brown folks and introduce them into an economy that is receptive, that is inclusive, and that is willing to engage with them and allow them to access their American dream through the pet industry.”- Zach Skow Did you know? 40 of the incarcerated men enrolled in the Pawsitive Change Program have been released and more than 20 of them have since gained employment in the pet industry! 64. In this episode of the 5 Core Life, host Will Moore sits down with Zach Skow, dog rescuer, life changer, and founder of Marley's Mutts. Zach discusses how he went from rock-bottom with 90 days to live to a second lease on a life full of love, growth, and opportunity. He talks about the top habit that's helped transform him and how he's used relationships, both human and animal, to become the happiest he's ever been. Are you ready to fire on all cylinders? If so, let's go! MORE ABOUT ZACH SKOW: Zach Skow was born and raised in Hermosa Beach, California. As a kid, he aspired to become a fighter pilot, but later found his passion in providing second chances for pets and people. He began working in local animal welfare in 2004, developing the first large-dog foster program, which he headed, as well as an education and therapy dog program called Miracle Mutts. In 2008, Zach was diagnosed with stage 4 acute alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and given less than 90 days to live. He was admitted to the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Cedars Sinai, where he is still a patient. It is out of this desperate situation that Marley's Mutts dog rescue was born. Zach found a way to save his own life by saving the lives of others, a Philosophy of Service that Marley's Mutts has adhered to since its founding. Marley's Mutts was honored in Sacramento as the best nonprofit of the year for the district of California in 2019. Marley's Mutts has rescued over 6,000 dogs, cats, horses, and pigs in the last 11 years and has created numerous progressive programs, including Barks and Books, Miracle Mutts, and Pawsitive Change — an inmate/canine rehabilitation program that is spreading throughout the California penal system and the world. Zach married the woman of his dreams, Heather Skow, and they have a 19-month-old daughter together, as well as 5 dogs, 1 cat, a pig, and three horses. https://marleysmutts.org https://instagram.com/zachskow https://instagram.com/marleysmutts MORE ABOUT 5 CORE LIFE: WHAT'S YOUR CORE SCORE? Jasmin announces that she’ll likely be participating in The Goat Games, a virtual event that challenges participants to finish a 5-kilometer run, walk, bike, hike, or swim at a location of their choosing between August 8 and 16 to raise funds for Catskill Animal Sanctuary. Recently, Catskill, like many other sanctuaries, has lost 30% of it’s funding due to COVID-19. Then, in our continued effort to support vegan-owned businesses, we’re shouting out Charlie Fyffe and his  amazing guide to 70+ Black owned vegan businesses in Los Angeles. Over 70!  Then, Jasmin talks to Zach Skow. Zach is the founder of Marley’s Mutts, an animal shelter with a difference in Kern County, California. He turned to his dogs to help him when his diagnosis with end-stage liver disease meant that he had to battle to stay sober to access a liver transplant. When Zach recovered, he was prompted to start the rescue to give back, and, since its inception, Marley's Mutts has now rescued over 5,000 dogs and started a pioneering prison program called Pawsitive Change.  In this episode Zach joins us to dive into how his love for his dogs and their unwavering acceptance of him pulled him through the darkness and brought him back to his authentic self. He shares why Marley’s Mutts is not only an animal shelter, but is a positive force for change in the community, and how the Pawsitive Change Prison Program works to take rescue dogs into local prisons to train with inmates and give both a second chance. Zach also discusses how he sees Marley’s Mutts developing and expanding in the future to support vulnerable humans and animals in need.

In this week’s episode, I am sitting down with Zach Skow, the founder of the Pawsitive Change Program.  Pawsitive Change is a non-profit that runs in the California prison system, and brings rescue dogs into the prison population.  Zach and other trainers help inmates become dog trainers themselves. This is an incredible program, and helps bring hope and healing to not only those incarcerated, but to the dogs being rescued.  I hope you guys enjoy listening to Zach’s story of redemption, and how Pawsitive Change came to be.

Welcome to The Woof Life Show - a podcast created for dog lovers, by dog lovers! Hosted by Lauren Farricker.   In this episode, Lauren chats with Zach Skow. Zach has one of the most interesting stories in dog rescue. Zach was a previous abuser of both drugs and alcohol for years. His body began to fail and he found himself in full-blown liver failure; he was told by doctors that he had to remain sober for 6 months in order to qualify for a transplant. The mutts of his life provided the life-changing catalyst that caused Zach to want to get sober. While at his lowest point his pups looked at him with all of the admiration in the world.   His body healed and as Zach focused on getting sober he began to take his pups for long walks and hikes, they also began to add more to their pack and Marley’s Mutts was born. Marley named after his incredible Rottweiler who was the pup that everyone looked up to and people loved.   Marley’s Mutts is a very successful dog rescue that has helped re-home many pups and give them lives that otherwise would never have been possible. Zach also founded the Positive Change Program which is a program for inmates where they are paired with dogs that are saved from kill shelters. The inmates become dog trainers and work one-on-one with these pups that they can get their canine certification certificate and are then are ready to be put up for adoption and go to a forever home.   Zach has an incredible ability of seeing the beauty in forgotten pups and people that so frequently get overlooked. His life is now so vastly different now, him and his wife have a daughter and they regularly open their home to pups who need to be believed in.  Enjoy this interview with Zach Skow.   Please rate, share and subscribe to The Woof Life Show!

In today's episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm wicked excited to be having a deep-dive, down-to-earth, heart-to-heart conversation with one of my bona-fide heroes Zach Skow. Zach is the Executive Director & Founder of “Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue” a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, trains and re-homes death row dogs from Kern County's high-kill animal shelters. After a car accident, Zach struggled with alcoholism for years before he was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease in July 2008. He was given only 90-Days to live and needed to be sober for six months to qualify for a liver transplant - and during that time of sobriety, he said he felt scared, suicidal and struggled with self-love and acceptance. But as Zach soon learned, "Dogs are Powerful Medicine" and during his transition period into sobriety, he established Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to help “the throwaways” dogs with special needs and histories of abuse and neglect who land in animal shelters. Since then, Zach has 10 years of sobriety under his belt and as an organization Marley's Mutts has helped save & rescue over 5,000 dogs!  He's also founded a program that I'm a huge believer in called "Pawsitive Change" that pairs death-row dogs with inmates in CA prisons - giving both humans & dogs a second chance at life and rehabilitation.  This episode is super near & dear to my heart - and Zach is a true testament to what it means to transform “Your Story to Your Glory”! I hope you'll take the time to check it out. Zach Skow struggled with self-love and acceptance, leading him down a dark path of drug and alcohol abuse. He hit rock bottom and was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease. With only months left to live and six months of sobriety required to qualify for a transplant, it appeared to be a death sentence. But somehow he was able to find solace in his dogs, and pushed through. He got better, and afterwards started Marley’s Mutts – a non-profit rescue organization – and the Pawsitive Change program, where he matches deathrow dogs with inmates in prisons to help give them both a second chance at life on the outside.

Zach Skow was 28 years old and dying of end-stage liver disease due to a crippling alcohol addiction.  In order to receive a transplant, he would need to accrue  6 months of sobriety. He found the kinship, strength and unconditional love needed to accomplish this task in his dogs. A decade later, he’s sober, married with a child and is the founder of Marley’s Mutts, a dog rescue organization that heals and rehabilitates shelter dogs.  The rescued dogs are then used in a variety of therapeutic programs that benefit both people and the animals.  To date, Marley’s Mutts has placed over 5000 dogs. Some of our upcoming guests Noelani Guerrero http://www.urbansuburbanapparel.com Zach Skow http://www.marleysmutts.org Belinda Morrison http://www.bemorefitness.com Dr. Sara Kelly http://cenlaanimals.com Sophie Gamand http://www.sophiegamand.com We hope you take the time to learn more about pit bulls and some of the people who work hard to rescue these wonderful dogs. Each dog is an individual, so one suggestion we make is to take the time to get to know your animal. You might find that pit bulls are terrific companions and are ready to change your life in a positive way. The overcrowded conditions in many animal shelters often highlights the problems pit bulls present for animal rescue. They are some of the most overbred dogs, and because of their controversial reputation of dog bites and association with dog fighting, are sometimes considered less desirable by prospective adopters. This can cause tremendous suffering, as some pit bulls stay in shelters for years, or are euthanized. You'll hear stories of those who work with pit bulls directly and listen to their experiences with animals of all sorts, including pit bulls. Zach Skow, the founder of Marley's Mutts, was diagnosed with end stage liver disease in July of 2008 due to his excessive drinking.  In fact, Zach had battled alcoholism since his teens. As he tried to get healthy enough to receive a liver transplant, the doctors advised him to exercise and quit drinking.  Sick and weak, Zach started walking with his father's rescue dogs, including a Rottweiler–pit bull mix named Marley. The dogs in Zach's life loved him unconditionally and helped him survive his illness.  Today Zach is healthy and sober and repaying the debt, rescuing the hardest to adopt dogs and finding them loving forever homes.  Zach can relate to the dogs, he says that without alcohol, he was vulnerable and scared—much like the dogs he now rescues from shelters. When Zach walks into a shelter, he sees himself in the destitute dogs, and they in him. He knows intimately what it is like to feel worthless and unwanted. He felt like a “throwaway human”, and to most people, the dogs in the most hard-knock shelters are throwaway dogs. Also on the show, Jolene and Shawn Heath from Heath's Haven Dog Rescue. Heath’s Haven Rescue & Sanctuary is a special needs rescue for dogs with neurological issues, spinal injuries, paralysis, and mobility issues.
