On this week's show we look at a technology that could end HDMI. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Sony steps away from 8K TVs – for now Survey: Share of Homes With TV Antennas Falls to 19% DIRECTV unites streaming options under one name and price structure Peacock highlights cool features for mobile users Other: AUBESS Tuya WiFi 16A Mini Smart Switch Is GPMI the beginning of the end of HDMI? Over 50 Chinese companies including Hisense and TCL have joined forces to back an HDMI alternative called GPMI (General Purpose Media Interface). This new wired communication standard is designed to integrate multiple functionalities into a single cable, aiming to rival HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt. The following are some key features: High Bandwidth for Data Transmission - GPMI Type-B: Supports up to 192 Gbps bandwidth, significantly surpassing HDMI 2.1 (48 Gbps), HDMI 2.2 (96 Gbps), DisplayPort 2.1 (80 Gbps), and Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps). GPMI Type-C: Offers up to 96 Gbps, compatible with USB-C ports, doubling the 40 Gbps limit of USB4 with Extended Power Range (EPR) under USB PD 3.1. Enables ultra-high-definition video - including 8K at 120Hz or higher, suitable for next-generation displays, gaming, and professional applications. Power Delivery GPMI Type-B: Delivers up to 480W of power, far exceeding Thunderbolt 4 (100W) and USB4 (240W with EPR). GPMI Type-C: Provides up to 240W, matching USB4 EPR capabilities. This eliminates the need for separate power cables - simplifying setups for devices like TVs, monitors, and gaming laptops. All-in-One Cable Solution - Combines video, audio, data transfer, network connectivity, and power delivery into a single cable, reducing cable clutter. Supports bidirectional data transfer - allowing devices to send and receive data simultaneously. Compatibility and Connectivity - GPMI Type-C: Licensed by the USB Implementers Forum ensuring compatibility with existing USB-C ecosystems for smartphones, PCs, and TVs. GPMI Type-B: Uses a proprietary connector, which may face adoption challenges unless widely licensed. Backward-compatible with USB-C and DisplayPort standards - easing transitions without requiring immediate hardware replacements. Universal Control and Device Management - Supports a universal control standard similar to HDMI-CEC, allowing a single remote to control multiple GPMI-connected devices Security Features - Integrates the ADCP (Advanced Digital Content Protection) protocol for secure content transmission. Supports daisy-chaining - similar to DisplayPort, for connecting multiple devices in series. Limitations and Notes While GPMI supports 8K video, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 can handle higher resolutions (10K and 16K, respectively), though without power delivery. Adoption is currently limited to Chinese companies (e.g., Huawei, Hisense, TCL), and global traction depends on integration into mainstream devices and compatibility with non-Chinese brands like Sony, Intel, or NVIDIA. The proprietary Type-B connector may face adoption hurdles compared to the USB-C-based Type-C variant. Commercialization is planned for Q1 2025, with consumer products expected by early 2026. GPMI's combination of high bandwidth, power delivery, and multifunctionality positions it as a potential game-changer, particularly for 8K content and simplified connectivity, though its success hinges on widespread adoption and global market acceptance.

Using CW on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. UK and Ireland stations also send their district code. The SP DX RTTY Contest starts at 1200UTC on Saturday the 26th of April and ends at 1200UTC on Sunday the 27th of April. Using RTTY on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. SP stations also send their province code. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 17th of April 2025 Last week was characterised by increased Kp index numbers and severe geomagnetic storms, peaking at G4. These drove down maximum usable frequencies and disrupted DX contacts, especially on the higher HF bands. The solar wind speed increased from 380 kilometres per second to around 500 kilometres per second on the 15th and an increase in plasma density was noted as well. Subsequently, the Kp index peaked at 7.67 on Wednesday the 16th, causing visible aurora alerts in the UK. This was caused by a pair of CMEs that left the Sun on Sunday the 13th of April. We had a total of 22 M-class solar flares over four days, so a CME event was inevitable. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are a feature on the declining side of a solar cycle, so we could unfortunately be in for many more. According to Propquest, MUFs over a 3,000km path fell to below 18MHz for long periods on Wednesday the 16th, before climbing to around 21MHz at the end of the day. Meanwhile, the solar flux index fell from a high of 170 on Friday the 11th of April to a low of 148 on Wednesday the 16th of April. Next week, NOAA predicts that the SFI will start the week around 145 but could increase to 165 as the week progresses. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the 22nd to the 24th of April, with a predicted maximum Kp index of four. As always, keep an eye on solarham.com for daily updates, but more importantly, get on the bands, which are a much more effective guide to HF propagation! And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The current period of unsettled weather looks likely to continue into the coming week. This does not mean rain every day, but periods of rain or showers with some intervening drier spells. These drier interludes are not really dominated by high pressure, just gaps between the wetter periods, so it's unlikely to produce much significant Tropo. In terms of propagation, there may be some rain scatter, although it won't be very reliable. However, the prospects for meteor scatter are more promising with the peak of the Lyrids due on Tuesday the 22nd of April. It is worth checking up on procedures for meteor scatter working if you've not done it before and you may find a new part of the hobby to add to your operating schedule. The prospects for aurora continue to be raised by what seems like an almost daily supply of aurora alerts. Continue to monitor the Kp index for signs of elevated values, where Kp is above five, for radio activity. Early signs such as fluttery signals on the LF and HF bands may suggest it's worth looking on the VHF bands for auroral activity. As we move towards the new season it is good to get into the habit of looking for Sporadic-E. The Propquest website www.propquest.co.uk shows several useful components for analysing the Es prospects. If you look at the position of the jet streams shown on the Es blog tab, these can produce favourable conditions geographically to give a hint of the right direction in which to listen. The opening season typically favours 10m or 6m. EME path losses are now decreasing towards perigee on Sunday the 27th of April. Last Friday, the 18th of April, saw minimum Moon declination, so Moon windows will lengthen along with peak elevation. 144MHz sky noise starts this week very high but decreases to low as the week progresses. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club, and welcome to a bit of a QNews special. This past week I've been in Fiji taking part in the Pacific Media Partnership Conference, especially a session on disaster readiness and risk management for Broadcasters. Response to a hazard is about preparation, one area where Amateur Radio operators have always played a very important role. Our club is stepping up focus on areas of our hobby where a bit of prep will pay off in a big way. Our next meeting, focused on natural hazards will be the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network, or WICEN. On Monday 10th, Simon Chantrill VK4TSC from the Brisbane Area WICEN group is joining us to talk about the role of WICEN; across the country and in Queensland. Not every WICEN activity is an emergency many events are peaceful and community-oriented and how we learn the skills we need when a hazard goes pear-shaped. As Simon says: WICEN is a state of mind and being ready is everything. So write that down: 10 March at the Toowoomba Library for our March Technical Meeting and member night. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. The week has passed and I wonder how many of us were surprised by an unexpected love token for St. Valentine's Day? In the gloom of the current news cycle where crime and cost of living issues seem to head the broadcast news service,s there seems to have been little weight given to what can be a special good news event on the calendar. Better news has happened for the people in north Queensland as the low-pressure systems have moved the rains away from major population centres and the massive range of jobs in restoring normal life and livelihood gets underway. Whilst the roads may get repaired and the shelves of the shops are restocked, one constant reminder of flooding is the smell. It is something I first experienced in my school years and most recently in a trip to Brisbane over a decade ago. Clean water and sunlight still seem to be the best cleansing agents after the silt and debris are removed. I have mentioned before that when I worked at night, I used to enjoy getting the written version of the amateur radio news downloaded on packet radio. These days we are fortunate that not only are there many volunteer re-broadcasters but audio and video versions of the news are available. As a reminder to listeners in the Wide Bay area, there are alternatives when copy 2m is poor and if you watch the video you get broadcast quality sound. By the way, I still get the text version of the news and that allows me to catch up when life gets in the way. It was worthwhile seeing someone replying to a post, online, that now was a good time to get involved in amateur radio with simple equipment. The writer reminded us that in another 5 years or so, the sunspot cycle will no longer be giving us the gift of great DX on the HF bands and maybe a low-powered radio would need to be replaced by a more standard 100W one. The truth is that many people started out running lower power to meet their licence conditions and they developed great skill in pulling signals into their shack and also succeeded in completing contacts at that lower power. I have met and heard operators who never felt compelled to go to higher power and this is one of the great things of our activity. There are so many modes and methods which we can use and explore and not feel we are less than a “big gun” who chases rare DX with maximum power. At some suitable time, I want to dabble with some of the digital modes that will run on my station equipment. One area of annoyance for me is the so-called improvements and additions that are being supplied by the Windows operating system. As a firm believer in the KISS, keep it simple stupid, principle these new extensions to the operating system are just taking space on my hard drive. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

We wrote a driver this week for the HUSB238 USB PD sink chip https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/05/04/plug-n-play-usb-type-c-dummy-pd/ - this IC is neat in that you can either use jumpers (really, resistor selection) to set the desired PD voltage and current ooooor you can use I2C for dynamic querying and setting. we have a wall adapter that can provide almost-all-PD voltages: 5/9/12/15/20 only 18 is skipped. The HUSB plugs into the USB C cable and, over the CC lines, will negotiate the PD request and commands. For example, we can ask what voltages are available and then iterate over the options here: a multimeter displays the output voltage to prove it works! This can be a handy chip for projects where you need a lot more than 5V @ 2A power: this adapter can give up to 20V at 5A - yes 100W over USB C - and you could buck that down to get a toooon of current at 5V or 12V if that's needed.
