Author Glennon Doyle and superstar soccer legend Abby Wambach sit down to give advice about what an IMO listener should prioritize while figuring out where to move her young family. Glennon shares why she moved her family seven times, and, as the “bonus parent,” Abby discusses what she thinks is most important to their kids' and family's happiness (hint: It's not unlimited cake-pops, though she's tried). Craig and Michelle discuss their own stories of uprooting families for careers—including a very strange move to a big house in Washington, DC. Have a question you want answered? Some people become the ones others depend on. They organize the plans, remember the details, carry the weight. They know how to fix things—quietly, efficiently, lovingly. That kind of strength can shape a whole life. Until it begins to hollow something out. Amanda Doyle has spent much of her life being that person. In this conversation, she joins Kate to talk about what happens when helping becomes a way to stay in control, when strength hides tenderness, and when receiving love might be the bravest thing we do. She shares her experience of parenting a neurodivergent child, walking through a breast cancer diagnosis, and learning to see herself as worthy of the care she so freely gives to others. This episode is about the ache of being the strong one—and the grace of letting that go, just a little. In this episode, Amanda and Kate discuss: How a lifelong habit of fixing became both a strength and a struggle The quiet, radical act of letting people show up for you What Amanda wishes more people knew about dense breast tissue and early cancer detection The power of being seen—even before you have it all figured out If you liked this episode, you might also like: Kate’s conversation with Amanda’s sister, Glennon Doyle, “The Love Bridge” Gary Haugen, “Joy is the Oxygen” Father Greg Boyle, “Unshakable Goodness” Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. Description: In the span of a single year, Abby Wambach lost her beloved brother, her wife Glennon Doyle was diagnosed with anorexia, and her sister-in-law Amanda Doyle was diagnosed with breast cancer. For the first time, the trio who host the wildly popular We Can Do Hard Things podcast, all found themselves simultaneously lost, looking for answers. So they turned toward the only thing that's ever helped them find their way: deep, honest conversations with other brave, kind, wise people. What resulted from those conversations was a myriad of guideposts, words of wisdom from some of the most brilliant wayfinders in the zeitgeist today. In this episode, Jen and Amy talk with Abby and Amanda about some of the most meaningful bits of guidance that they have received from inspirational voices like Elizabeth Gilbert, Jane Fonda, Michelle Obama, Ocean Vuong, Esther Perel, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and others that they have gathered into a new book called, We Can Do Hard Things: Answers to Life's 20 Questions. Some of the conversations they delve into include: Why are we like this? How do we figure out what we really want? How do we let go, or forgive, or get unstuck? Why do we wake up every day having forgotten everything we know? Why self-loyalty is so damn hard for women? Thought-provoking Quotes: “I'm just trying to remain a human in this political environment, in this place of deep fear where so much is at risk. And I think the way we do that is continuing to see each other as human and continuing to let our hearts break over what should break our hearts.” – Amanda Doyle “Having played on many different teams, I'm well suited to work well with others. I just have to be here and be myself. That is the way that I add value. I am not gonna add value in the way that Glennon and Amanda do. I know that. But that doesn't give me any lack of confidence because I know I bring something to the team.” – Abby Wambach “After 400 or so conversations, it was so wild that, whether we were talking to a person who's been a therapist for 40 years, or a person who's a poet, or a person who's an activist, there were just a handful of questions that all of these people are struggling with. The smartest people in the world are trying to figure out the same things that we are.” – Amanda Doyle Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Forward: A Memoir by Abby Wambach - https://amzn.to/4ckZOFi WOLFPACK: How to Come Together, Unleash Our Power, and Change the Game by Abby Wambach - https://amzn.to/4cpazqg We Can Do Hard Things: Answers to Life's 20 Questions by Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach, and Amanda Doyle - https://amzn.to/3EfeZ6r Glennon Doyle - https://momastery.com/ Amanda Doyle Stops Keeping Score And Stays In The Moment - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-60/amanda-doyle-stops-keeping-score-and-stays-in-the-moment/ Brené Brown - https://brenebrown.com/ Kate Bowler - https://katebowler.com/about/ Suzanne Stabile - https://suzannestabile.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://abbywambach.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/abbywambach/ Twitter - https://x.com/abbywambach Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/abbywambach/ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCej3anJvC-rSMd63asN8cXg Podcast - https://wecandohardthingspodcast.com/ Guest's Links: Twitter - https://x.com/amandafdoyle Podcast - https://wecandohardthingspodcast.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. We get it. It's tempting to ask the people closest to us (and sometimes strangers on the internet) what we should do… for every single decision we have to make. But is this really what's best for us?On this week's episode, we're discussing the drawbacks of outsourcing our power to other people. Why do we trust everyone else on the planet more than we trust ourselves? How can we learn to listen to our own intuition, sort through advice from other people, and take actions that move us towards the life we desire? The truth is that other people are only able to tell you how they see it. Their perspective is clouded by their own life experiences and circumstances, and those oftentimes don't align with our own. If you're looking to stop wasting time asking other people for advice and are ready to start taking action moving towards the one you desire, press play. Our perspective may be just the thing you need to get started.Takeaways:The societal norm encourages seeking validation from others.Listening to oneself is often overlooked in favor of external advice. The cost of ignoring self-trust can be significant.Quiet reflection is necessary to hear our inner voice.Pleasing everyone is impossible and can lead to dissatisfaction.Trusting ourselves can enhance our relationships with others.Self-trust is a lifelong journey that can start at any moment.Chapters:11:00 Navigating External Advice vs. Internal Wisdom21:40 Building Trust in Ourselves23:05 A Pivotal Moment: Learning to Trust Yourself31:06 Navigating Health and Self-Care34:03 The Importance of Quiet and Reflection37:17 Shortening the Gap Between Knowing and DoingLove,Meg & MaggiFollow us:InstagramTikTokFacebookYoutube [self-trust, personal growth, decision making, advice, inner voice, self-awareness, mental health, Glennon Doyle, Untamed, personal development]Music curtesy of LiQWYD

Description: Maddie Corman is a seasoned American actress and playwright that you've seen in classic films including Some Kind of Wonderful, Maid in Manhattan, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and our favorite television shows like Law and Order, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Most recently, she has put her creative hand to writing and performing in a very raw and vulnerable autobiographical one-woman play called Accidentally Brave, that delves into Maddie's personal journey following the arrest of her husband on child pornography charges in 2015. Today, Maddie shares her story of navigating the aftermath, focusing on themes of resilience, healing, and redefining normalcy when life takes an unforeseen turn. In this tender and transparent conversation, we discuss: How Maddie's life turned upside down after a public personal crisis—and how she found her way back What led to her decision to write a raw, hilarious, deeply moving one-woman show called Accidentally Brave (now a movie on MAX!) What she imagined midlife would look like when she was younger versus what it looks like from where she sits today What it's like to walk (or sometimes crawl) through shame and loss—and come out with more freedom, more truth, more YOU Also, how motherhood shifts our perspective in crisis What practices or people help us stay grounded in the hard moments – Maddie shares some really great resources! Why midlife is actually the best time to tell your story and start again Thought-provoking Quotes: “After a really big trauma that I thought was going to destroy my children, it turns out, they are thriving, and funny, and sensitive, and smart, and caring, and annoying, and they love me, and I drive them crazy, I'm sure. I share that because I feel like that was what saved my life was somebody who had been through something similar saying my kids are going to be okay.” – Maddie Corman “When you lose your mother, people bring a meatloaf over. But when your husband's arrested and you say ‘I think he's a sex addict and a porn addict,' there's no meal train that's coming for that.” – Maddie Corman “I had lived 47 years when this happened and I had never met another person who had gone through anything like this. P.S. It turns out I had. They just didn't share about it.” – Maddie Corman “You inch your way back to the sunshine and it's so slow. And at the beginning you just think, everything's ruined; I'll just never be happy again so let me cobble together some sad life that just gets me to the finish line. But the truth is, it's stunning how much we can recover.” – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Some Kind of Wonderful film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094006/ John Hughes - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000455/?ref_=fn_all_nme_1 Brené Brown - https://brenebrown.com/ Glennon Doyle - https://momastery.com/ Elizabeth Gilbert - https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/ Accidentally Brave Play - https://www.maddiecorman.com/accidentally-brave Accidentally Brave on MAX - https://play.max.com/movie/b19ce99f-93c8-4150-ba0d-139e12048efe Partner Betray Counseling - https://www.maddiecorman.com/partner-betrayal-counseling Find a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) Therapist - https://iitap.com/page/TherapistDirectory Find a 12-Step Program - https://www.aa.org/find-aa SANON International - https://sanon.org/ AL-ANON Family Groups - https://al-anon.org/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.maddiecorman.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/msmaddiecorman/ Twitter - https://x.com/maddiecorman Connect with Jen! In this episode of the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine Leach and Sarah Adelmann welcome Jennifer Jamieson, a bereaved mother and advocate for families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. Jennifer begins with a quote from Glennon Doyle's Untamed: “Every world changer's work begins with a broken heart.” She shares her personal journey grieving the children she lost through miscarriage and stillbirth, the importance of community support, and the transformative power of sharing stories in group settings. The conversation emphasizes the uniqueness of each person's grief experience, the significance of rituals in mourning, and the necessity of giving oneself permission to grieve. Jeniffer share how in peer support groups grieving parents can find their own experiences reflected in those of others and discover they are not alone. Keywords: grief, loss, support groups, bereaved parents, healing, community, stillbirth, miscarriage, peer support, pregnancy loss takeaways Every world changer's work begins with a broken heart. Grief has no timeline; it is a lifelong journey. Loss is a loss and grief is grief, regardless of circumstances. Community support can provide validation and understanding. Rituals for mourning are essential for honoring lost loved ones. It's never too late to acknowledge and process grief. Grief work is akin to building a muscle; it requires effort. We can carry our grief with us rather than trying to move on. Sharing stories in a group can lead to transformative moments. Authenticity in grief allows for deeper connections and healing. Sound Bites "Grief has no timeline." "Loss is a loss and grief is grief." "We're sure glad that we have this community." "Grief work is like building a muscle." "It's a myth that we move on from our lost loved ones." "We create coping mechanisms that build strength." "Your story has a place to be." "It's never too late to acknowledge your grief." This book opened my heart and mind and I'm forever grateful.”— Glennon Doyle, author of #1 New York Times bestseller Love WarriorWhat happens when you fully commit yourself to love? Endless good, insists Scott Stabile, who found that out by overcoming plenty of bad. His parents were murdered when he was fourteen. Nine years later, his brother died of a heroin overdose. In Big Love, his insightful and refreshingly honest collection of personal essays, Scott relates these profound experiences as well as everyday struggles and triumphs in ways that are universally applicable, uplifting, and laugh-out-loud funny. Whether silencing shame, rebounding after failure, or moving forward despite fears, Scott shares hard-won insights that consistently return readers to love, both of themselves and others.Scott Stabile has amassed a Facebook community of over 350,000 people with his inspirational quotes, posts and live videos. I first encountered today's guest back when I was editor of Red magazine and - for some crazy reason - went to an Oprah convention in Atlanta. I know right? I can literally hear everyone who knows me in real life laughing. So, Yes! I went to Atlanta to see Oprah but really I went to see someone else - a woman who Oprah described as “one of the smartest women I know”. Martha Beck. Martha is a Harvard trained sociologist and life coach who was Oprah's no-nonsense agony aunt on O magazine for almost two decades. she has not one not two but three degrees, as you do. And is the author of ten bestselling non-fiction books, including Steering by Starlight which you might have heard Lindsay Nicholson raving about on a recent episode of The Shift. (And it's not just me, Lindsay and oprah, Martha is beloved by such self help luminaries as Elizabeth Gilbert and Glennon Doyle.) Her new book Beyond Anxiety could not be better timed! Martha joined me from her home in Pennsylvania to give us all a mahoosive pep talk on how to manage our anxiety. We also discussed surviving the 3am panic spiral, why she only got a handle on her own anxiety at 60, being a late blooming lesbian and what she's learnt from parenting at 20 and 60 - and frankly a whole lot more. Listen to Martha's podcast with Rowan Morgan Bewildered and her solo podcast The Gathering Room. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Beyond Anxiety by Martha Beck and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. Are you waiting for life to fall into place before you feel truly happy? In this episode of 10 Minutes to Less Suffering, I dive into how we often resist the present moment—thinking our joy, purpose, or fulfillment lies somewhere else. But what if this moment is already part of the dream? As a writer and podcaster, I have struggled to balance these deeply creative and fulfilling pursuits with my job as an executive at a mission-based company. I used to believe that true happiness only came from writing, podcasting, and sharing ideas, but I've realized something powerful: our dreams are not just in the doing and achieving—they're also in how we experience every moment of our lives. Join me as I explore how releasing resistance, embracing what is, and reclaiming our peace can open the door to new possibilities. If you've ever felt stuck, frustrated, or like your dreams are on hold, this episode will help you shift your mindset and find joy in the dream that's unfolding right where you are. Listen now and take back your peace! If you found this podcast enjoyable, kindly consider subscribing and leaving a rating or review. One of my favorite conversations on or off mic with anybody any time--it is pure joy to welcome adrienne maree brown--an absolute force of a writer/public intellectual/creative genius, one of the thinkers who energizes me most, and makes me feel most hopeful about the future. This conversation has everything: from Kendrick (and the constructive implications of Drake being "called in!"), to the Neverending Story, to what it means for her to be "steeped in God/steeped in the holy," her journey from a conservative evangelical upbringing to the wide open spaces she is in now, to the essential soul to soul recognition we can have that transcends the boundaries of mere words, and how she finds a way to remain tender in a time that feels anything, but. In a moment that feels bleak for many of our friends, her clear-eyed assessment of this apocalyptic time--and yet absolute fearlessness about it, is oxygen, an invitation to the kind of "long time" she finds in nature and her own connection to a larger story. I was especially excited to talk to her too, about how her work in her brilliant new book Loving Corrections has helped me find language for naming our need for acknowledging harm and making amends, without the moralistic baggage that religious versions of those ideas sometimes carry. You may know her from books like Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, We Will Not Cancel Us, or from her hilarious and poignant IG posts, or have heard her in conversation with folks we love like Glennon Doyle and Krista Tippett. She is "growing a garden of healing ideas. Informed by decades of movement facilitation, somatics, science fiction scholarship and doula work." However you know her, I hope you know her or get to know her better, and contend with her critical witness . What a gift this stunning conversation is! It has been a minute from my brief holiday/winter term hibernation, but we are back with a bang, with a lot more goodness to come in the days ahead...I know you will find this as life-giving as I did!
