As a special treat I get to sit down with ultra runner and nutritional expert Stephanie Violett as she spends time in Europe to train and work this year. We start our conversation with her sharing an injury that's kept her from racing Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc this year and why she traveled all the way to Sweden to treat it. I ask her more about how she's so free to pick up and leave for Europe for the summer. She assures me despite the appearance on her instagram she does actually get work done. She shares with me some of the research she's done with female ultra runners and the affect running has on appetite. In the middle of my talk with Dr. Stephanie she tells me about the importance of individualizing nutrition plans for people and how this affects GI distress in many of her clients. I ask her about a increasingly popular runner's "scientific" research into nutrition and it's controversial take on what we should be eating. This leads us into a discussion about the problems of when bad science becomes pop culture. We trade a few stories of pushing ourselves and talk about balancing performance with being healthy and why it's important to not solely define yourself by running. In the last part of my talk with Dr. Stephanie I get her to share her personal opinion on the best way to deal with chafing for ultra runners. I then try to take her back in time to get her to share how she became a runner and how it was somewhat a reluctant journey because she had other plans. In the last part of my interview with Stephanie she talks about the namesake portion of this episode - losing the layers of ego you build up when you're running an ultra. Then also dealing with managing and checking your ego during the struggle that ultras bring to know whether you are hurting and okay or hurting and need to let this one go. Welcome to episode 23 of the Chasing Bravery podcast! Today I am chatting with Dr. Stephanie Howe Violett. Stephanie is an extremely accomplished human both in the sport of ultra-running, as well as professionally. I am actually awe struck by how much this woman has accomplished so far in her life, while remaining a totally warm and open person to chat with- I suppose that this quality of hers goes back to one of her simple rules- don’t take yourself too seriously. Stephanie and I chat about her career as a professional ultra runner, as well as what it was like working towards her doctorate degree and some of the challenges that she faced upon deciding to push forward with her chosen research proposal. If anyone is interested in checking out Dr. Violett’s published work just scroll down to the show notes for that information. Stephanie is an undeniably accomplished and motivated individual but that does not mean she doesn’t have set backs like everyone else. She was very open about some of the injury’s she has dealt with in her career, as well as the tough decision she made to just completely call it quits at one point. Stephanie did the thing that most of us dedicated athletes fear- she stopped exercising altogether and just let her body recover. Stephanie’s message was one I think many of us need to hear, which is that there is life without intense daily exercise, and that it is possible to discover who you are outside of your sport. Enjoy this fantastic conversation with Stephanie! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chasing-bravery/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chasing-bravery/support

This year's race played out to be very unique and challenging. Also joining us is this year's 7th place finisher, Jacqueline Merrett, to discuss her first time running. Stephanie Howe Violett, 12th place, joins us with her husband, Zach Violett (2016 finisher) to discuss her day and lesson's learned. Results
