Sarah Bowen Shea and Amanda Loudin team up to talk to a trio of runners motivated by the Boston Marathon. The guests weren’t inspired to necessarily run Boston, but inspired by it—the size and scope of the marathon or by the tragic 2013 bombings. The first guest is Julia Gibson, a mother runner of three, who vowed she’d never run 26.2—until she “watched that Boston Marathon documentary with tears in my eyes, and I wanted to be a part of something that historical.” Julia offers advice for other BAMRs looking to BQ. Next is repeat-guest Erin Wright, who was so moved by the Boston Marathon bombings, she registered to run her first marathon the very next day! Erin shares how the event colored the 26.2 miles she ran in October 2013 at Twin Cities Marathon. Then YiOu Wang rounds out the conversation, telling how she morphed from a couch potato to a 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials participant (!!) after spectating Boston as a student at MIT. While watching thousands of runners and spectators, she told herself, “This is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen, and I want to be a part of it!” YiOu describes how she “Couch-to-5K’d” her way to becoming a runner—and she’s now a professional ultramarathon. YiOu gives loads of advice, including tips for stepping up from 26.2 to 50K races, how to stick to a training plan while traveling, and how to nab a stunningly beautiful run-photo for Instagram! In the intro, Sarah and Amanda talk about their kids on the college-admission path, and Sarah shares about encounters with tap-legend Savion Glover. Talk of Boston starts at 13:27. Sarah Bowen Shea and her BRF, Molly Williams, chat about all facets of sleep, answering questions from the AMR Facebook page, with two guests: Ellen Wermter, a family nurse practitioner at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, then professional distance runner Stephanie Bruce. First up is Nurse Ellen, who reveals the optimal average of hours we should be sleeping (the number might surprise you)—and she offers welcome reassurance that it’s normal to have one or two interruptions during the night. (Is that a baby crying we hear—or our partner snoring?!) She shares ways to get deeper sleep plus tips for staying asleep. The sleep-nurse also reveals ways to break the habit of recurring middle-of-night fret sessions. Find out what a “worry window” is—and why taking a daily one can improve your slumber sessions. Next on the sleep train is pro runner Stephanie Bruce, who tells why she was able to set personal records in both the 10K and marathon in 2018. This mom of two preschool-age sons reveals bedtime rituals—both hers and that of her young family. (#apples) Stephanie shares how she stopped suffering from night sweats. In talking about sleep hygiene, Stephanie tells how she adjusts for races in distant time zones. The dynamic duo of Sarah + Dimity dive into a conversation about triathlon with two enthusiasts: First is Meredith Atwood, a.k.a. SwimBikeMom, who is excited about the recent publication of the second edition of her book, Triathlon for the Every Woman. Meredith speaks candidly about how triathlon saved her from work stress and alcohol abuse. Nod in empathy as she details her first run (eight minutes), then laugh along with the trio as she describes her first swim session as an adult. Meredith reveals what triathlon taught her—and how it helps her accept her weight. Meredith and Dimity (also a triathlete) bond over praise of shorter races and women’s events. The second guest is Jackie Kahuna, a mom of two from San Diego who just celebrated the one-year anniversary of her first triathlon. Yet find out why she’s already completed a 70.3 (half-Ironman) event! Jackie and Dimity give guidance on getting used to clip-in pedals and toss around gear advice. Jackie’s enthusiasm for the variety of three sports is infectious. SBS + Dim talk books in the intro: Sarah raves about literary genius of The Virgin Suicides and extols The Winters (a modern reboot of Rebecca), while non-fiction-loving Dimity sings the praises of Pam Houston’s Deep Creek and On Desperate Ground. Sarah and Dimity talk with three coaches to help you put your best foot forward in 2019. First up is Jenn Gill, a certified personal trainer and strength coach in addition to being a running coach (did we mention she has three kids, too?!). Jenn talks up the overlooked beauty (and discomfort) of 5K races, and she shares tips on how to maximize results in shorter races. She gets teary when telling how much she loves being a cheerleader for runners. The next coach is Amanda Loudin, highlighting the new 13.1 and 26.2 training plans in the Train Like a Mother Club. She details how to get the most out of your legs, imparting crucial advice for half- and full marathoners. Coach Amanda emphasizes the importance of consistency over the long haul (pun intended), and the ladies laugh about how double-digits run end up seeming like NBD when training for an endurance race. Finally, this veteran of 30+ marathons gives race-day advice for 26.2-mile events. The final coach to join the program is Liz Waterstraat, one half of the duo now orchestrating the TLAM Club heart-rate training programs. Coach Liz explains why heart rate is such a “rich metric” of what’s going on inside a runner’s body during training. She describes the benefits—and the beauty—of HRT; she elaborates on the importance of taking training day by day, one run at a time. Wrapping up with race advice, Liz sings the praises of being prepared: why it is critical and how it can ensure race success. In the intro, Sarah shares details of her family’s European vacation and Dimity talks of her family’s holiday; the first coach joins the show at 13:15. Fresh off the Another Mother Retreat in Cape Cod, Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell counsel Elena from Brooklyn about weekly runny tallies, especially when coming off a marathon training cycle. Dimity’s great advice (borrowed from a tri coach in Train Like a Mother Club): “frequency over duration.” The duo explores reasons—and solutions—to why Mimi in Chicago might be feeling fatigued on runs the day after she strength trains. They give guidance to Kimberly from Lexington on how to re-center herself after an interruption during a run. Then Sarah and Dimity offer different suggestions to Carrie near Chicago about juggling half-marathon training with a European family vacation. Learn more about your ad choices. Sarah and Dimity talk up triathlon—the joys + the challenges—in this extra-long episode. The BAMRs are first joined by Jennifer Harrison, one of theTrain Like a Mother Club triathlon coaches with an illustrious personal tri career (even if she can’t remember whether she won her first swim-bike-run race or not!). Coach Jennifer highlights the beauty of swim-bike-run events, then reveals the ideal number of workouts for sprint and Olympic-distance races. The trio spends a long time talking about swimming and, yes, Coach Jenn addresses fear of sharks. She shares numerous wetsuit tips, as well as tells the #1 thing a novice triathlete should spend funds on. Dimity also shares money-saving gear advice. The next guest is Jessica Hughes, a mom of three who details how she progressed from her first tri in May 2017 to now training for a half-Ironman-distance race (1.2-mile swim; 56-mile bike; 13.1-mile run). Jessica is sure to allay any swimming concerns a wannabe-triathlete has, as she reveals a make-you-laugh anecdote involving a wetsuit and she recounts how she sidestroked most of her first tri! There’s a lot of talk of mindset from both guests. Nuun-drinking game? Chug every time someone mentions teens getting driver’s permits! In the intro, SBS shares news of her 92-year-old, recently widowed mother’s big decision, and the duo discuss the joy of dog parks. The first guest joins the conversation at 19:20. Navigating Systems Faculty, Kathy Wiseman, Priscilla Friesen, and Andrea Schara sit down to discuss the dying process from a systems perspective.
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin are joined by Coach MK Fleming of the Train Like a Mother Club to discuss how to choose a great running race for you. The trio covers a variety of considerations, such as geography, weather, terrain, crowd size, corral policies, and more. Coach MK shares when it’s smart to adjust your expectations. The ladies’ opinions about downhill races might surprise you. Coach Amanda stresses the importance of knowing yourself and what kind of runner you are when it comes to tolerating inclement weather conditions. Laugh along with SBS at MK’s “ultraviolet sandwich” analogy. Learn that “good enough” is often pretty awesome, and find out why MK is a proponent of extra-long training plans. Garner valuable insight about some banner races, including NYC, Marine Corps, Big Sur, and Richmond marathons. Here are the two race-review sites SBS recommends: BibRave and RaceRaves. In the intro, Sarah and Amanda rehash Ogden Retreat memories (including karaoke!) and SBS talks TSwift concert. The trio dives into the choosing-a-race debate at 21:15. Sarah and Dimity unite to talk with Coach MK Fleming of the Train Like a Mother Club, and the trio jumps into a straight-talk discussion about setting realistic New Year resolutions. Realize why picking one big goal actually adds up to 1,000s of little tasks, and learn to not conflate optimism + attitude with progress. (Like we said: straight talk!) Numerous analogies to mastering a foreign language or to learning to play the piano abound. Coach MK talks about how to be smart in the goals you pursue, and she shares three small daily changes you need to embrace to meet your goals. Find out why Dimity feels “unbreakable” right now—and what her secret goal is. (And why 2022 might be a big year ‘round AMR parts…) A great reminder toward end of the episode: Enjoy the real joy in the journey. This week’s Nuun-drinking game: Take a swig every time Coach MK mentions the self-defense system of krav maga. Talk of resolutions starts at 19:40. Coach Amanda Loudin and Dimity McDowell dive into the 10K, half-marathon and marathon programs in the Train Like a Mother Club; the duo's marathon-length conversation covers everything from running your first marathon post-baby to winning your half-marathon age group at age 66. (BAMR!)
Sarah is delighted to have Coach MK Fleming as her sidekick, with Ellie Kempton, a Denver-based holistic nutritionist and the official nutritionist of the Train Like a Mother Club, joining the convo. The trio dive into the question: Is it possible to lose weight during a performance-driven training cycle? They reveal why it’s so difficult for the body to multi-task (sound familiar, mother runner?!), including delving into the intriguing hormonal changes that occur during training cycle—and the implications of those alterations. The TLAM Club women discuss the effects of how a body adapts and changes during training—and why the body protects itself from losing weight during training cycle. (SBS tosses in a caveman analogy.) Ellie outlines what is required for weight loss to happen sustainably—and Coach MK shares a story about when (and why) she opted for performance instead of losing baby weight. Whether your goal is to rock your race or see a lower number on the scale, find out how to work with your body, instead of against it. The three-way conversation starts at 14:20. Sarah and co-host Molly are joined by two guests who offer valuable insight into prehab: the simple moves that can help you avoid running injuries. First is Britny Fowler, a personal trainer who leads education session on TriggerPoint Therapy products. This mother runner speaks from experience: After getting talked into running several races by friends, she qualified for Boston Marathon—then ran the race 23 weeks pregnant! Britny provides enlightened advice for starting a prehab routine (just one minute a day!) and how to make it successful. Find out why she suggests we take cues from cats and babies, and how the ABC’s enter into the picture. She answers all sorts of foam rolling questions—including why, when, how long, and how intensely. (And why adding vibration is a game-changer!) Next, the BRFs welcome on MK Fleming, the Train Like a Mother Club heart rate coach and multi-time marathoner. Pregnant with baby #4, MK talks about how her workouts are morphing along with her body. In answering questions culled from the AMR Facebook page, MK explains how to let attitude be your guide on workouts plus the importance of making easy days easy enough. This leads to intriguing side conversation about what constitutes true “rest” on a training plan—and why us mother runners have such a tough time doing it. Coach MK stresses the importance of a short pre-run warm-up and why to ditch an all-or-nothing mentality. Whether it’s Britny’s analogy of training for a fight before getting beat up or MK’s sage advice about the importance of continuing to ask questions, we guarantee words from this episode will reverberate in your head for miles to come! To celebrate # AMRiversary—seven years since the founding of Another Mother Runner—Sarah and Dimity take a meandering, verbal “stroll” down Memory Lane. The mother runners reveal the genesis of AMR’s signature phrase, “badass mother runner” and the growth of their Facebook following. They reflect on the early days of the podcast, and Sarah shares the warm-fuzzies she feels toward one episode in particular. In signature TMI fashion, Sarah suggests a possible GIF from a podcast moment that stands out in many longtime listeners’ minds. The two extol the magic of mother runner parties, and Dimity admits how the Train Like a Mother Club brings out her maternal side. Along the way, there are revelations about the duo’s book trilogy. Interwoven into the founders’ reminiscences are a dozen Voice Memos from various mother runners, sharing their favorite AMR moments. Sarah and Dimity chat up the two newest Train Like a Mother Club coaches, Lindsey Hein and Stephanie Howe Violett. First up is Lindsey (who you might recognize from her own podcast, I’ll Have Another), who laughs about three big goals she tackled basically all at once in her early 20s. This coach of the TLAM Club 5K Success program stresses the importance of not being self-critical and why consistency is key in making running a lifestyle. Learn how a little fellow named Russell is getting in the way of her usually die-hard commitment to watching “The Bachelor.” Then Stephanie, the coach of the first-ever TLAM Club ultramarathon training programs, shares her greatest successes in ultra races, including her recent 100K victory after a year of recovering from injuries. This professional ultramarathoner reveals she had to learn to be patient during her recovery, and she cautions about the dangers of ramping up too quickly post-injury. Sarah and co-host Dimity welcome a bevy of savvy, sassy guests: the coaches of the Train Like a Mother Club. The gals give a preview of the plans in 2017 (including an exciting triathlon announcement!) as well as some insight into their coaching perspectives. First up is Coach MK Fleming of the hugely popular heart rate training programs, who talks about the importance of believing in “the power of ‘yet’” for “future badassery!” Next on is Amanda Loudin, coach of the traditional programs (and occasional co-host of this podcast), who reveals how she stopped a string of injuries that plagued her for the better part of a decade. An intriguing conversation about track workouts (no, not an oxymoron!) evolves when Amanda talks about what her TLAM Club plans entail. Finally, Jenny Harrison, one of the two new triathlon coaches, empathizes about coming back after a pregnancy (in her case, a twin pregnancy that involved eight weeks of bed rest!). Jenny explains why she loves to coach beginners, whom she encourages... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Something different for the holiday week! In this podcast, Dr. Justin Ross, Dimity, and TLAM Club Coach MK talk with Monica Knox and Ana Hernandez, two Denver-based mother runners looking to qualify for Boston at the Philadelphia Marathon. Huddled around one mic, the quintet dive into the mental side of the ladies’ race prep and discuss how to maximize performance on marathon day. In the Train Like a Mother Club in 2017, Justin—or “JRo”—will be leading small-group webinars focused on the mental aspects of running: motivation, goal setting, mental toughness, and race execution. Spoiler alert: We checked in with Ana and Monica during the busy Thanksgiving week to see how their races went. Monica had a tough week leading up to Philly, and struggled with the wind and other issues. She did not meet her time goal, but is confident she’ll make it to the Boston starting line. (We are too!) Meanwhile, Ana ran a determined 3:43, well under the 3:55 she needed to run to nab a Boston 2018 bib. *Looking to try... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Holiday nutrition advice: Sarah and co-host Ellison Weist tuck into a conversation with Ellie Kempton, a Denver-based holistic nutritionist and the official nutritionist of the Train Like a Mother Club. A big believer in “simple advice and cues,” Ellie shares five strategies for surviving the holiday season, including a few that might surprise you. She laughs at how she taught herself to become a slow eater (it’s a method that we suspect might work for many mother runners!). Find out what Ellie refers to as “bubble wrap” as you head to a party, and get advice on how to fill an entree plate once you get there. She encourages gals to eat with gusto instead of fear, saying the holidays need to be about renewal not depletion. The conversation wraps up with the three gals take a deep dive into something called “oil pulling” (who knew?!). Fresh off a visit to Connecticut, Sarah shares a family update—and talks up a chicken recipe she cooked for her clan. And, as promised, here’s the PDF of Ellie talked up... A special episode in which Dimity takes the reigns of hosting! Sarah gabs a bit in the intro, then bows out to let Train Like a Mother Club heart rate coach MK Fleming join in the party. One after another, Dimity and MK welcome three mother runners to recount their recent races after taking part in the TLAM Club inaugural heart rate-based race training programs. First up is Amy, an attorney who returned to racing this year after a decade-plus hiatus. Amy details how HRT allowed her to cut three minutes off her half-marathon PR, despite being 12 years old and 30 pounds heavier! Next, twin mom Alicia describes how she ran nearly equal splits in her debut marathon earlier this month. Finally, Heidi talks about how heart-rate training finally allowed her to run a marathon injury free on legs that weren’t constantly sore. *To find the Saucony layering pieces talked about on the show, shop the Saucony website, where you always get free express shipping and free returns. *Visit the re-vamped Mother Runner... Dimity double-fists it during this recorded-at-almost-5:00-p.m. podcast, with a Shiner Bock Beer in one hand and a glass of Nuunin the other. The ladies debate triathlon versus trail running as Dimity’s sport of choice, and Dimity talks about the ultramarathon she’s aiming for.
