Welcome to Season 12 Episode 36 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. In this week's podcast, Lisa is joined by Zach Decker, Chief Marketing Officer of KT Tape. Zach grew up in Boulder, CO with a passion for sports and wellness. He is an avid mountain biker and father of two very active kids. As a result of his interest in physical activity and sports, his role at KT was a no-brainer. In case you're not familiar with the KT brand, it is the leading kinesiology tape brand in the nation. What is kinesiology tape? It is a product used by health care professionals to prevent and treat muscle and tendon injuries and pain such as a strained hamstring or a sore knee. If you watch professional sports of any kind, you have likely seen the colorful tape on athletes' arms or thighs to help them continue playing while preventing further injury. KT has just launched its first mobile app, providing users with clear instructions on how, when, and why to use KT Tape. Based on consumer feedback, KT realized many people lacked confidence in applying KT Tape without professional guidance. The app, designed with input from KT's Sports Medicine Advisory Panel, offers instructional videos to help users understand the benefits, use cases, and proper application of KT tape. You can download the app for free on the App Store and Play Store. They are also launching several new products in the coming months and recently launched the KT PRO Oxygen, the first kinesiology tape to feature CELLIANT® Infrared Technology from Hologenix. Printed on the tape's surface, CELLIANT® mineral powder converts body heat into full-spectrum infrared energy. This delivers enhanced cellular oxygenation, bringing more oxygen to the cells and increasing local circulation. For the full lineup of KT products, be sure to visit their website at https://www.kttape.com/. You can also find them on Instagram at https://instagram.com/kttape and Facebook at https://facebook.com/kttape. Overview: We kick off this episode with a recap of our most recent CPPS one day workshop. Coaches from all over the world came in to hone their knowledge of the CPPS curriculum in order to become better coaches. We cover some of the things that stood out to us and some messages to all trainers. We then transition to a beautiful Ronin lesson, on accepting your Role as a Beginner in life, irrespective of your circumstances or what stages of life you're in. What ever you do in life, do it to your best ability. As Jordan Peterson says, “nothing done well, is insignificant.” The second half of the episode is dedicated to answering your questions, which include the funny story of how Smitty and DeFranco met, how to use KT tape for injuries and beyond, an important message on training with chains vs. bands, and what most are missing in their programming to ensure healthy knees. "They start turning off the water when the weather gets cold. So there's a narrow window when most people try this. I did the first R2R2R at night, so the warm sun made starting the second lap easier." This route was 83 miles, with 22,000' of vert. And unlike running in the mountains, to finish it off, you have to run almost 5,000' back UP! "Your quads must be preserved. The "box" is good running, so you'll lose big chunks of time if you're already beat up by then." Drew loves the Grand Canyon, and it shows. Even though it's not always easy, as he describes one trail in the western section: "You can hardly see the trail. My lower legs were shredded. If I were to do that route again, I'd put KT Tape all over my shins in advance." This Episode Sponsored by Rabbit: The free-spirited California brand dedicated to all things running. Drew used their cool-weather kit for his night-time start, and their super-light gear for the rest of his FKT - check it out here. Blake Kukula is a 3-time Washington State Champion in Boy's golf, is currently an NCAA Division one athlete for the Seattle University, and has his sights set on the PGA Tour. In addition to his golf credentials, he is a musician, a deep thinker, a hard-worker, and a really nice guy. In fact, he is so nice that he couldn't say no when I asked if he wanted to receive some mild electrical shocks during our conversation. Don't miss this one! You'll get a peek inside Blake's head and you'll see what it really takes to achieve greatness in a chosen field. Blake exemplifies commitment to a goal. Every choice he makes is in reference to how it will affect his goals. He doesn't take life lightly and recognizes the importance of choosing to invest time and energy today for a pay-off tomorrow. I love talking to people who take-on the challenge of optimizing their potential, and Blake certainly falls into that category. This is a great conversation and I hope you enjoy! Welcome to the fourth Low Tide Boyz swimrun gear review show! This review is once again co-hosted by our friends at Swimrun Labs and this is going to be a regular thing going forward to we’re very happy about that.Like our swimrun shoe Shoedown episode, this episode covers that nebulous category of Swimrun gear that goes beneath your Swimrun gear. Think undershirts, bras, undies, nothing, and socks! Welcome to the Underwear episode. Let’s get right to it!Global Considerations in Selecting Undergarments for SwimrunChaffing AbatementWarmthStorage Capacity“Bogginess” (wet diaper effect)Chaffing a big issue so we broke this down a bit. Body Glide, Vaseline, 2Toms Sports Shield or Tri Slide are essential to try to keep your wetsuit from chaffing your neck, arms or thighs. Brooke uses multiple layers of Body Glide and 2Toms on her skin and separately her wetsuit. Lubing up neck, armpits, any other opening, bra line and the “nether regions.” Another option for abatement which we learned from Team Envol Baywatch (listen to Episode 6 with them here) is the use Rocktape or KT Tape around the neckline where the wetsuit would make contact.Anyway, chaffing is annoying and can get debilitating the longer the event. Take it seriously and avoid it like your life (or at least your skin’s life) depends on it!Next, we’re going to breakdown undergarment choices going from head to toe.HeadThe main thing in this region is wearing something under your race swim cap if the conditions call for it. There are neoprene caps (with or without chin straps) that Roka, Blue Seventy, Ark Sports and others make and non-neoprene caps like TYR Warmwear caps.“Wetsuit Region”One challenge with Swimrun is the gear that you need to carry on board for longer races and the lack of storage capacity in most Swimrun wetsuits. Ark Sports and NU make special undershirts that have kangaroo pockets for extra storage under the wetsuit. NU also makes some sports bras for women (or men we guess) that also have a pocket in the front. For warmth, an undershirt would help. For ladies, one product that worked for Brooke was the Smartwool Merino Wool racer back sports bra.A question that we get a lot is “what do you wear under your swimrun wetsuit?” There are a lot of options to choose from but we recommend something with compression and made of synthetic fibers so that they don’t ride up under the suit and also wick water away. Sporty underwear should be the first place you look at. The main thing to about is anything with big seams (due to the potential for chaffing) or things that might ride up and create rolled-up material that would be super uncomfortable.FeetThe question that we get the most is what socks to wear for Swimrun. We recommend NOT using cotton socks or socks that have extra padding or cushioning in the footbed or toes (to prevent bogginess). Using a wicking sock like a thin running or cycling sock that is higher than ankle length is the way to go. Ankle socks could lead to getting more rocks or sand in your shoes. A couple of brands that we like are Gococo (the official sock of Ötillö), CEP, Stance (the run infiknit socks) or Swiftwick (Aspire is the best model that we found for Swimrun). Brooke uses neoprene socks for racing, specifically, ankle neoprene socks called the Seavenger Zepher. Blue Seventy makes booties that can also be used. This is definitely an area where you want to test to make sure that using booties is going to work for you in a race. So…This was a lot of information and we covered a lot of ground. The main takeaway should be that there are a lot of different ways to get to the finish line. All four of us used different products and were happy with it. We suggest starting with what you have and experimenting from there. That’s it for this week’s special edition show. You read that right, Trina has 9 kids (all biological) ranging from 24-8 years old. And she's still a runner pursuing time on the trails in the backcountry near her home. If that doesn't inspire you, well, I don't know what will. We talk with Trina about what life with a big family looks like, how she cares for herself and her marriage through the years of having kids, and we're left with great reminders for living in the present and seeing the beauty in each moment we get in this life! Pain is a universal occurrence and is considered one of the most important factors impacting runners. How can we avoid pain in the first place? And if we are unable to avoid pain, how can we manage it to continue training safely? Dr. Boleslav Kosharskyy is board-certified in Anesthesiology, Interventional Pain Medicine and Palliative Care. He is Associate Medical Director of Pain Medicine and Director of Anesthesia for Joint Replacement Center at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein Medical College. Dr. Kosharskyy employs multimodal therapeutic modalities to treat musculoskeletal pain of the back, neck, and joints, neuropathic disorders, and cancer pain. In this episode, we learn about pain avoidance and management techniques as well as how Dr. Kosharskyy treats his patients in his practice. He dispels some common myths and provides clarity on using common and alternative medicines for treatment. Dr. Kosharskyy specializes in minimally invasive therapies such as: Spinal Cord and DRG Stimulation, Kypho- and Vertebroplasty, Percutaneous Discectomy and MILD Procedure (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) for Spinal Stenosis as well as an alternative medical marijuana treatments. He is involved in several clinical trials as well as basic science research on neuroprotective properties of enolate forming compounds. He completed his fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY in 2005. He completed his Anesthesia residency at Boston University Medical Center, Boston, MA in 2004. He earned his Medical Degree in 1997 from Free University of Berlin Medical School, Berlin, Germany. He is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA). Questions Dr. Kosharskyy is asked: 2:16 When is it safe to run through pain? 2:49 When should you definitely not run through pain? 3:53 What about ‘Phantom Pain’? 5:04 What is your opinion on NSAID’s? 6:01 does acetaminophen work differently than ibuprofen? 6:30 Can each of these exacerbate certain conditions? 7:20 What are some pain relief alternatives can people use for day-to-day pain? 8:40 Is running bad for your knees? 10:49 How can runners prevent knee injuries? 12:24 Should runners who are very heavy do more low-impact activities? 13:35 What is your opinion on KT Tape for knees? 16:07 Platelet Rich Plasma--what is it and how can it help runners? 20:20 Are there any side-effects or people who should avoid PRP injections? 22:24 Is it a last resort treatment for injuries? 23:15 Why is it important to keep the thoracic spine flexible and the lumbar region stable? 26:05 Your clinic also is a leader in medical marijuana therapy for pain management. Can you explain how this can apply to runners? 27:42 Would you recommend topical CBD for local pain? 28:26 What advice would you give yourself back when you started running? 29:16 What is the best gift running has given you? 30:44 How can people connect with you? Quotes by Dr. Kosharskyy: “I avoid the term ‘in your head’ because I think it’s very diminishing and insulting. I think everything is in our heads, it’s true, but we always have to listen to the concerns, especially as physicians.” “Everything is connected in your body.” “Running is good for you if you do it recreationally; meaning if you do it 3-4 times a week and you don’t obsess over it, it’s actually good for your knees and prevents arthritis.” “I would not use PRP injections as prophylaxis for anything because there is very little data to support the prophylactic use.” “Biomechanics are very important when you run. If anything has shifted, it’s going to create a chain reaction. If you don’t have a flexible spine in the thoracic area, it will create an enormous increase and pressure on the unilateral joints. So instead of evenly redistributing the pressure on both knees, one knee will get a lot more of it and is more likely to get injured over time.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Leave a space for libsyn link Want more awesome interviews and advice? Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today! In this episode, we discuss: Braces - The human body is meant to move freely. Learn how braces lock up your joints preventing you from moving freely. Runners wear braces to alleviate pain, but braces do not protect a runner from injury. In fact, it leads to more serious problems. Shots - Cortisone can cause joint and cartilage damage when it is used for prolonged periods. It can also lead to tendon rupture as it weakens the body to dissipate pain. Discover how the pain is simply a result of the real problem, and why shooting the pain spot with cortisone actually deconditions your muscles, and creates new injuries. KT Tape - Has had a class-action lawsuit against them for false claims of preventing or fixing injuries, and the federal government WON, for a reason. We discuss the myth and misconceptions of KT-Tape and why your favorite athletes wear it, and why you should probably NOT use KT-Tape as a runner. SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
On one of the walls in Sara Hughes' bedroom is a poster of Misty May-Treanor. It's been there since she was little, when Hughes began getting into volleyball, serving as a reminder of what she might become one day should she continue to pursue this beach volleyball dream of hers. So it struck her when, during a tournament this season, a parent of a young fan approached her and told Hughes that, on one of the walls in her daughter's bedroom, is a poster of Hughes. “I was like ‘No way that's actually happening,'” Hughes recalled on SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter. “I am so grateful for that and I hope I can keep being a person young people can look up to for a long time and thank you to everyone who does.” Did you catch that, at the end? Hughes thanked the fans for looking up to her, not the other way around. In an era where celebrities grow more and more closed off, taking instead to social media to communicate behind iPhones and laptops, Hughes remains open, willing to talk to anyone, pepper with anyone, give back any way she can. “I'm always just trying to help people,” she said. “If anybody wants to ask, just come up to me, you can ask me directly.” No different than May-Treanor continues to treat her. When her age could still be measured with a single digit, Hughes would head down to the Huntington Beach Pier and sit on the wall, waiting for a chance, any chance, to simply shag balls for May-Treanor. Sometimes May-Treanor would let her pepper or hop in for a drill or two, creating an indelible memory that Hughes will cherish more than likely the rest of her life. “I love talking to people and I love talking to young girls because I don't think I'd be in the position I am today if I didn't have the coaches I had and people like Misty May taking the time to talk to me,” she said. “I love doing the same to everyone else.” She's a sponsor's dream, Hughes. She has the looks – blonde hair, blue eyes, Colgate smile – the smarts – she's currently on a one-year track to earn her Master's degree, just a year after delivering a graduation speech at USC – the media savvy, the talent, a voracious competitive drive juxtaposed with a disarmingly charming personality. Oh, yes. She has earned this position, the right to have Mikasa run her through photo shoots and turn those shoots into posters for young girls to hang on their walls, to point to each night and morning and say “I want to be like that.” Her accolades at USC could fill a small book's worth of pages, and it's a wonder if some of her records – four consecutive national titles, a winning streak that eclipsed 100 matches, a perfect 48-0 junior season, four-time All-American – will ever be broken. Justifiably, this drew no small amount of media coverage, and while she was appreciative – always thanking anyone for taking the time and interest in her – it drove her a bit insane, how those reporters would invariably walk right past her exceptionally talented teammates. On the occasion that the media showed interest in the rest of USC's indomitable team, more often than not they'd ask questions not about how their match went, but what they thought about Sara and her partner, Kelly Claes. “I hated that when it was just ‘Oh! Sara and Kelly and Team USC!'” Hughes said. “I was like ‘No, you don't realize, these girls who are on [teams] two, three, four, to the eighth team, they're our support system. We would not be close to being good or successful without our teammates. They deserve just as much fame and respect as we do because we're out there on the same hot court at USC and we're training, every day, together.” Her teammates, as she said, were plenty talented, and a number of them – Nicolette Martin, Terese Cannon, Jenna Belton, Sophie Bukovic, Allie Wheeler, to name a few – have already begun making a name for themselves on the AVP Tour. Yet Hughes, as May-Treanor was, will be the name fans point to as the next in this massive wave of beach volleyball talent rising from the college ranks. She will be the one on the posters, and in the commercials for Oakley and KT Tape and Mikasa and any other sponsor wise enough to sign her. She's becoming the next generation's version of May-Treanor – the one everyone looks up to – quicker than she could have possibly realized. The final question of SANDCAST is reserved for the athletes to discuss anything else they'd like to discuss, anything the hosts may have missed. Most demur, maybe shout out a sponsor or two, thank us for the time. Hughes, instead, had a message for her fans: “For the young players and any parents who are listening, I love the indoor game and the beach game, of course. So a lot of players are making this decision where they love the indoor but they have to play the beach in college because they think that's the only thing they can play. I just think it's huge for young girls to play both if they love both.” You can teach any volleyball skill there is. But to become the next face of a sport, as May-Treanor once was? That's a trait passed down, from one legend to the one who might just become the next.
Sarah and co-host Adrienne Martini talk about running injuries and prevention with Dr. David Geier, a respected orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist in Charleston, South Carolina, and host of his own podcast. Dr. David answers a slew of questions garnered from the AMR Facebook page, starting with what’s causing that (literal!) pain in the butt so many mother runners are feeling. He explains why an MRI isn’t the best test for a labral tear. (Speaking of tests, you’ll definitely ace the word “medial” on the SATs after listening to this podcast!) Dr. David describe the classic symptoms of a stress fracture—and tells why heeding early signs will limit time off running. The good doctor—or, rather, the “Good News Doctor” as Sarah dubs him in the show due to his optimistic outlook on injuries and recovery—talks about how age tinkers with a runner’s body and how to allay some of those changes. The trio covers a whole lot of ground: shin splints, IT Band issues, piriformis syndrome, knee pain, and more, as well as “gear” such as KT Tape and cortisone injections. A must-listen episode, even if you’re currently injury free!! In the introduction, Sarah and Adrienne talk about why shorter long runs are often tougher than lengthier ones. The interview with Dr. David Geier starts at 16:43. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
