This latest episode is my quarterly conversation with Like the Wind magazine co-founder and editor Simon Freeman. We recorded the episode back in April and I put it out yesterday. Ordinarily it coincides with the release of a new issue of LtW, in which an excerpt of the conversation usually appears, but the latest edition of the magazine is “by women, about women, for everyone,” so Simon and I sat this one out. (You can buy a copy or subscribe here.) We still had a great chat, however, about a few topics that both of us have spent quite a bit of time thinking about: how we handle change, shifting priorities over time, defining our values, and emphasizing quality in our work. In a world filled with endless possibilities and opportunities, setting goals is often seen as the key to success. But what exactly makes a goal effective, and how can we avoid common pitfalls in the goal-setting process? I sat down with renowned goal-setting expert Caroline Miller to learn practical strategies for achieving our toughest goals and cultivating the determination to see them through. Caroline shares what it means to develop grit how to cultivate intrinsic motivation. We talk through the differences between learning goals and performance goals, explore the concept of 'good grit' versus 'bad grit,' and discuss practical strategies for building self-regulation and finding balance in our pursuit of challenging goals. Tune in to learn grit impacts all of us, from young kids in the next generation, to professional athletes - there's something for everyone in this episode! Here are some key takeaways: - The differences between learning goals and performance goals- Types of good and bad grit- Building self-regulation and intrinsic motivation- Finding a balance between challenging goals and short-term satisfaction- Developing grit in younger generations- The importance of lived experience in applying positive psychology concepts Links: - Check out my ultimate guide to goal setting - Learn how Mario Fraioli coaches athletes to focus on growth over goals - Read my blog about the risk of unrealistic standards
In this conversation, Mario Fraioli discusses his coaching career, what he loves about the profession, how he has grown as a coach, the challenges his athletes face, his communication around those topics, and much more with Stefanie Flippin and Peter Bromka. This is our new take on this format. Instead of addressing specific training and racing topics, we want to know about the philosophies and evolution behind some of the best coaches in our sport. Mario emphasizes the importance of building long-term relationships with athletes and the value of trust and longevity in coaching. He also discusses the significance of taking risks and setting big goals in athletic performance. Mario addresses the challenges of imposter syndrome and the importance of understanding the athlete's context. He also shares his thoughts on enduring vs absorbing training and the impact of social media on athletes' mental health. In this part of the conversation, Mario and Stefanie discuss the impact of social media on athletes and the importance of using it in a healthy way. They also explore how to evaluate new training methods and trends, emphasizing the need for self-awareness and critical thinking. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the creative aspect of coaching and the joy of finding unique training solutions. Takeaways Building long-term relationships with athletes is important for trust and unlocking potential. Taking risks and setting big goals are necessary for athletic success. Understanding the athlete's context and providing support beyond training is crucial. Enduring training without absorbing it can hinder progress. Social media can have both positive and negative impacts on athletes' mental health.
Mario Fraioli is the author of The Morning Shakeout newsletter and host of The Morning Shakeout podcast, he is also a coach to many athletes across all formats of running. He's one of the most respected people in the sport and more importantly he's a high character, high integrity person, and a good friend. As we've done each of the last three years, this episode is an annual check in where Mario and I compare notes on life, running, and career -- where we are, what we're inspired about, and what we're struggling with. On the quest for contentment, I have learned so much from meditation and cultivating positivity. I had the privilege of chatting with the insightful Oren Jay Sofer about his transformative new book, "Your Heart Was Made for This." We explored the profound practices of mindfulness, meditation, and Nonviolent Communication to nurture qualities like patience, contentment, and forgiveness. Oren shares wisdom on differentiating empathy, compassion, and kindness, highlighting how shaping our inner lives can lead to personal and social transformation. Here are some key takeaways: Cultivating inner qualities: like patience, contentment, forgiveness through contemplative practices can help with challenges in life and create positive change. Empathy vs Compassion: How to balance our feelings with what others feel; recognizing that kindness is such a powerful warmth and connection between people. Contentment: Using mindfulness to focus on appreciating what we have rather than craving more. Forgiveness: How to free your own heart from past suffering by embracing qualities like equanimity. Plus, tips from Your Heart Was Made for This: Learning how positive changes in our own lives can create positive changes in the world around us. In our quest for self-improvement, it's easy to focus solely on measurable progress—faster times, more significant achievements, and tangible results. However, growth extends beyond these external markers. In this episode, running coach Mario Fraioli joined me to discuss a topic we are both deeply passionate about: doing an activity for its own sake. As an elite athlete, writer, and coach, Mario has deep insight into how process, dedication, and commitment can bring satisfaction, regardless of the outcome. He shares the powerful shift in perspective that consistency comes from commitment and how much our mood can determine our understanding of progress. Plus, we talk about the significance of relationships and lifestyle in finding true fulfillment. Mario's wisdom has left a lasting impact on me, and I hope it resonates with you too. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The work itself can be the reward, not just external achievements or metrics. Growth doesn't always mean measurable progress - it can be internal too. Consistency comes from commitment to your values and goals. It's important to find fulfillment from relationships and lifestyle, not just outcomes. Pivoting requires honesty about what still serves your values and purpose. Traditional training plans focus on one distance at a time, whether it's a fast 5k or a marathon PR. But what if your race schedule looks a little less traditional? Today's podcast answers a question from a listener named Mike who is curious about combining a fast road marathon and a hilly 50-mile ultramarathon into one training cycle. Is this possible? Is it risky to race a 50 miler only 2 months after a marathon? On the podcast today I have my friend and former competitor, Mario Fraioli, to discuss how to approach training for this type of endeavor. Mario is runner, coach, and host of The Morning Shakeout podcast. Over the past few months, Mario has run his own unique combination of races, including the Boston Marathon and an indoor mile. As an incredibly competitive Master's runner, Mario had strong performances at both, running a 4:30 for the mile and a 2:34 at the Boston Marathon. Mario and I discuss the best training approach for runners like Mike who are attempting two ambitious efforts in one training cycle and address questions including: Is it best to do one longer cycle or two shorter training cycles? What's the best way to build in recovery after the marathon? How should you balance flat road training with hilly trail preparation? If you have a history of injury, what are the caveats? What are the mental challenges for this type of training? Mario is thoughtful and insightful, and his experience and knowledge will help prepare you for whatever distance you're racing. I know you'll enjoy our conversation! Let me help. Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out DrinkLMNT to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack. Thank you to our Performance Training Journal! We're also brought to you by our very own Performance Training Journal, which is now available on Amazon. Since I started running in 1998, I've kept a hardcopy training journal. Holding a tangible log, writing in it daily, and reflecting on the ups and downs of running is a surefire way to improve. This hardcopy training journal helps you focus on the training metrics that matter, prioritizes a long-term outlook so you don't take any shortcuts, and maintains your motivation with strategic self-praise. With a no-frills, functional design, the Performance Training Journal includes coaching advice on racing, injury prevention, strength training, and more. It will guide you through race scheduling, how to plan your race morning, the best workouts for endurance runners, and encourage you to track your personal bests over time. You have the space to make this journal your own whether you're a new runner or a professional, a trail or road runner, or a mid-distance specialist or ultra marathoner. So don't just track your running, learn from it with the Performance Training Journal! Check it out today on Amazon.
Welcome to episode 171 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! On this week's show we go “down under” for a race recap of this year's Transcape Swimrun. Joining us on this walkabout are special guests Fatima and Roxan Maestro, A.K.A., Team Tethered Since Birth. Fatima and Roxan are twin sisters, great humans, and super stoked on Swimrun so when we saw that they raced the event on Strava, we knew we had to get them on the show to get their race report. The event took place on March 11, 2023 and they share all the sights, stings, and sounds of their experience in Western Australia. But first…Training UpdateTraining is in full swing and the “work” is getting done.Unfortunately, it's looking like Sunriver Swimrun won't be happening due to…wait for it…permitting issues, so we will be refocusing on Casco Bay in July and will be engaging in random feats of endurance before then to get ready.ShoutoutThis week's shoutout goes to Mario Fraioli (previous guest on Episode 30 of the show) and Dr. Justin Ross. Mario recently had Dr. Ross, a sport psychologist on his podcast, the morning shakeout, and we highly recommend that folks check out that episode which was all about mental training as a key component of physical training. Solid gold stuff!Wisdom Nugget of the Week“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” - AristotleFeats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Marvin Mitschulat for posting an epic looking skiing day on the slopes of St. Anton am Alberg in Austria. We're not skiers but 33 miles of skiing in 15 runs seems pretty epic to us!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunNow for the “news.”Swimrun season in Brazil starts this weekend with the Hero Swimrun taking place on April 15th. This event offers 5 different distance events including a new 23km long course that takes athletes through 17 beautiful beaches in the coastal city Armação de Búzios, which is about 160kms east of Rio de Janeiro. You can learn more about the Hero Swimrun and race director Fabian Iskandarian on Episode 61 of the show. It's almost Swimrun season here in the U.S. with Swimrun Lake James taking place on April 22nd. They still have slots available so if you're able to go, we would highly recommend this event. Join us on Zoom on Sunday May 7th at 6pm ET for a casual virtual meetup to chat about all things Swimrun.Transcape Swimrun Race Recap w/Team Tethered Since BirthIt was great to chat with Fatima and Roxan. As we mentioned at the beginning of the show, when we found out that they raced Transcape Swimrun, we knew we wanted to have them on to share the tale. The Transcape Swimrun is a 26.5km point-to-point course with 22km of running and 4.5km of swimming. In this conversation we chatted about how the twins found Swimrun, the genesis of their idea to race in Australia, and got their race report of their experience. They are great and we loved living vicariously through their adventure.Enjoy!~~~That's it for this week's show. This week, I sat down with my good friend and two-time podcast guest Simon Freeman, the co-founder, editor, and publisher of my favorite running magazine, Like The Wind, which just celebrated its ninth birthday. For the past couple issues of LtW, Simon and I have had a conversation about a particular topic in running, which he recorded, transcribed, and published an excerpt of in the magazine. We did the same for Issue #34, which comes out on March 1, and decided to publish the entire audio conversation—which is what you're about to listen to—as a podcast to complement the excerpt that ends up in the magazine. In this episode, Simon and I had a great exchange about emerging footwear, apparel, and media brands and trends in the running space. It's very much two friends with a lot of industry experience just shooting the shit and speculating about what we're seeing and we hope you enjoy being a fly on the wall for it. The plan is to do publish these candid conversations as a podcast to coincide with the release of the latest issue of Like The Wind, which happens on a quarterly basis throughout the year, so there will be 3 more of these over the next 10 months. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by:the morning shakeout's partner brands, all of which have missions I believe in and products that I trust and use myself on a regular basis. It's been nearly five years since Mario Fraioli was on Running for Real! At the time he was an athlete, a running coach, a journalist, and was putting out his popular weekly the morning shakeout newsletter, but he had yet to launch his podcast of the same name. He's now put out over 200 episodes and has been reflecting on “how fortunate I am to be able to have these conversations and to share them with other people.” Not only have his guests all made an impression on him, but, he says, “my head spins every week when I hear how one of the conversations that I've had has impacted someone else. That has been just one of the, I'll call it happy accidents of my life, I guess, to be able to have that opportunity to do that and to impact people in that way.” One of his most impactful conversations aired earlier this month. Tommy Rivers Puzey is someone whom Mario wanted to have on the show since the morning shakeout began. He figured that they would be able to get together eventually, that it was “nothing that's pressing.” Then in the summer of 2020, Tommy became gravely ill with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. He was placed in a medically-induced coma, endured multiple surgeries and treatments, and lost nearly half of his body weight. He's now in remission, regaining his strength, and living life to the fullest. This spring he completed the Boston Marathon in an incredible, inspiring display of heart and will. Mario was privileged to speak with him the next day. You can listen to their conversation here. Tommy's journey is a shining example of two things that Mario would like to remind everyone listening, to “be here now” and to “find something to be grateful for.” Don't stress over something that happened last week, something that is coming up, or things you can't control. You may find, as Mario has, that “when I can be present, I can also have a lot of gratitude for who I am with, what it is that I'm able to do, and I can also just zoom out and be like, ‘it's not all that bad.'” The morning shakeout website is the most central place to go for everything that Mario is doing, and you can also follow him on Instagram. “I could tell he wasn't mentoring me because he wanted it to be this public thing that made him look good. I wasn't his charity case.” Dinée Dorame had a dream: to launch a podcast that would explore the intersection between running, land, community and culture. So she applied for the first-ever Tracksmith Fellowship program — and she won. Dinée was one of the first recipients of a Tracksmith Fellowship grant, which gave her the support she needed to bring the Grounded podcast into existence. She was also paired with a mentor: Mario Fraioli, host of The Morning Shakeout podcast and creator of The Morning Shakeout newsletter. Dinée and Mario started as total strangers, formed a fast mentor-mentee relationship, and now, one year later, are close friends with a "big brother, little sister" bond. In this conversation, they talk about their first phone call, the first time they met in real life, and how their differences have made their relationship stronger. SPONSOR: Tracksmith. Welcome to the first episode of Common Ground, a new monthly cross-cast I'm co-hosting with Mario Fraioli. We met a little over a year ago through the Tracksmith Fellowship Program and have become close friends since he started serving as my podcast mentor. We're calling this new project Common Ground because we are two people who come from very different backgrounds and upbringings yet share a mutual love of running, podcasting, music, and more. We will feature conversations about what's currently exciting us in the sport, issues in the community and industry, and we may even take some listener questions. Craig Curley (Diné) is a marathoner and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier. Craig's professional running journey has been a winding path. In the early 2000s, he was considered a top high school runner in Arizona. Forgoing Division I collegiate opportunities, he went on to compete for Pima Community College for two years and broke the 5,000m record which was previously held by Pima Community College alum Abdi Abdirahman. Shortly after the 2012 trials, Craig won the Columbus Marathon and signed a contract with Mizuno. In this conversation, we talk about the different phases of his running journey, the coaches he's worked with, and how his home life and cultural upbringing intersect with his running career. I am lucky to have connected with Craig through our mutual friend, Mario Fraioli. Mario is currently coaching Craig as he tackles this new season of running and life. To get everyone hyped for the race, we asked our friend and previous guest of the show Oscar Olsson to walk us through the legendary 75km course. This episode is a masterclass and super helpful for anything racing the World Championship or just curious about what teams will face on September 6. Get your notepads out for this one!But first... Training UpdateFor the first time in a long time we had a chill week of training now that Casco Bay is in the rear view mirror. We'll be starting to ramp up soon for Ödyssey Swimrun's Orcas Island race and we foresee a lot of running up (and down) hills in our future.ShoutoutThis week we're shouting out Henry Loveless who let us know that he did his first Swimrun over the weekend in Finland at the Strömfors Swimrun. He started listening to the show to get ready and we got him super stoked! (Mission Accomplished!) Congrats Henry and thanks for listening. Feats of EnduranceThis week's award goes to Drew Wilson. This guy biked 105 miles (with 7,000ft of elevation) in Taos County New Mexico over the weekend...on a tri bike. Impressive on multiple levels. Strong work dude!Check out and join our Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for Swimruns and stuff. This Week in SwimrunLots of updates this week so let's get right to it!Ödyssey Swimrun Mackinac Island is fast approaching! The race is on August 29 and we already are experiencing FOMO. Lucky for us, we will have two LTBz Field Correspondents (Trista and Amy from Team Adorkable) “covering” the event for us and they will be sharing all the weekend festivities on our IG stories and we'll be doing a race recap episode with them as well so stay tuned for that.Another race that is giving us FOMO is Swimrun Georgia. This race is taking place on October 10 and we recommend that everyone who is in the general area of Georgia or in the United States to register! Programming note: are hoping to interview the race director Tony Hammet before the race so stay tuned for that.Up in Canada, Swimrun Victoria took place over the weekend. Lots of smiling faces at this event that offered 27km Long Course and 13km Short Course options.Over in Europe, all eyes are on ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship on September 6. That's not all that is going on across the pond. ÖTILLÖ's Final 15k sprint race is taking place on September 4 which looks like a ton of fun! Finally, Swimrunman Laffrey is happening this weekend in France. This race offers a bunch of distance options including an ÖTILLÖ Merit race distance that features a legendary/brutal vertical kilometer final run to the finish line. There's also a kids Swimrun which is awesome! This is yet another race that's on our bucket list. Sigh! That's it for this week. Reach out to us with any news that you'd like for us to share on the show.UpdatesIf you haven't already, make sure to check out our Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay Race Report episode. Spoiler Alert: we had a good race and a lot of fun.Chris recently co-hosted the morning shakeout podcast with Mario Fraioli for the quarterly “Ask Mario Anything” series. A lot of great insight about marathon and ultramarathon training, nutrition, and the importance of taking breaks that is worth a listen. Finally, we are going to be restocking the LTBz store soon so stay tuned for new ways to show your Löw Tide Pride.ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship Course Walkthrough We are super lucky to have someone like Oscar Olsson come back on the show to walk us through the legendary ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship course. He knows the course like the back of his hand and he drops some major pro-tips that are good for everyone from first-timers to experienced teams racing on September 6. Basically, he gives us a masterclass on strategy for the 75km. He's a great ambassador for the sport who clearly loves Swimrun and wants to help grow the sport. You definitely want your note pad out for this one!Oscar's World Championship Solid Gold Pro-Tips:With 24 runs and 23 swims, working to keep your transitions short and crisp will save you a ton of time over the dayDon't worry about jockeying for position on the first run in Sandhamn because the beach before the first swim is very wide and there's plenty of spaceTake advantage of non-technical sections on the runs to find some pacePlan on cabbing down on the three long runs on the course unless the temperature is very cold to make sure that you're not losing too much electrolytes that will affect your speed towards the end of the raceAlways take a gel before the Pig SwimMost athletes will be cold after the Pig Swim so try to keep moving to get the body temperature upTake energy before the swim that takes you to Ornö because there isn't an energy station until about 8-9km into the long 20km runCab down for the Ornö runIn training, make sure do a long Swimrun session that ends with a 15km run so simulate what the long run on Ornö will feel likeMake sure to notice the current direction You can follow Oscar Olsson on Instagram and definitely check out Livesporttv.se for awesome Swimrun content! That's it for this week's show. “The hardest step in anything is to start—that's the hardest step. The second hardest thing is to stay with it. That sounds really obvious but I think keeping those two things in mind—you can't stay with it until you start, so 1. Just get started, and then 2. When you stay with it, you'll have days when you want to quit, and you're like, ‘Is this worth it?' whether it's podcasting, whether it's continuing on with the run, whether it's being in a relationship. Staying with it is hard but that's the second hardest part and you've got to keep working through that and I think having people who can help you with that, whether it's in a mentorship role, whether it's a training partner, or a partner, find those people, because I think it's a lot easier to get through things—whatever it is—when you've got support from others.” Trying something a little different this week: I'm sharing a special crossover episode of the Grounded Podcast with Dinée Dorame featuring me as her guest. Dinée asked me questions no one has ever asked me in an interview before. We talked about my obsession with basketball, the early days of my journalism and coaching careers, diversity and inclusion in the running industry, and a lot more. I really enjoyed this conversation and I hope that you will too. You may remember Dinée from back on Episode 145 of the morning shakeout podcast, which came out earlier this year right before she launched her show, and I recommend checking that one out or revisiting it if you haven't already. Dinée and I got connected late last year through the Tracksmith fellowship program, I've been mentoring her over the past 8 months or so on her own podcast journey, and she's become like a younger sister to me—I think I've learned more from her than she has from me and she's someone I respect and admire so much. Dinée's podcast helps fill a huge gap in the running podcast space: Every week she explores the intersection between running, culture, land and community through long-form conversations with runners of all backgrounds and levels. You can find it in all the usual places you listen to podcasts if you search for the Grounded Podcast with Dinée Dorame, and you can also follow the show on Instagram and Twitter @groundedpod. She's had some awesome guests thus far, including Meb Keflezighi, Jordan Marie Daniel, Ric and Nell Rojas, and my personal favorite: Billy Mills. Dinee's voice is important. I am so proud of the work she's doing and the impact it's making in the running industry. “You have days when you want to quit and ask yourself “is this worth it?” Whether it's podcasting, whether it's continuing on a run…Having people who can help you, in a mentorship role or a training partner–find those people. It's a lot easier to get through things when you've got support from others.” Mario Fraioli is the host and creator of the Morning Shakeout podcast and newsletter, a running coach, and my mentor in the Tracksmith Fellowship Program. Since last fall, Mario has been an incredible resource, guiding me through the ins and outs of podcasting. He hosts the successful Morning Shakeout podcast, where you can find him in conversation with some of the top athletes, coaches, and personalities in running. Mario ran Division II track and cross country at Stonehill College, where he was the program's first ever All-American in cross country. Prior to launching the Morning Shakeout, he was a senior editor at Competitor Magazine and worked in numerous spaces in both running and media. In this conversation, we dive deep into Mario's career in journalism, his not-so-secret obsession with basketball, and his thoughts on diversity/inclusion within the industry today. Mario is originally from Massachusetts, but currently resides in California with his wife and their (super adorable) dog, Tahoe. “I was just so excited. I knew at that moment that it was going to change my life.” Last year, Dinée Dorame, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, made her podcast debut as a guest on the Ali on the Run Show. Today: She's a podcast host of her own! At the beginning of 2021, Dinée launched her show, the Grounded podcast, which explores the intersection of running, community, land, and culture. On this episode, Dinée reflects on how the show has changed her life, and how she has found her voice and interview style along the way. She talks about being a recipient of the first-ever Tracksmith Fellowship program, and about being seen in the running community for all that she is, and not as simply "the Native runner." Plus, Dinée offers an update about how her own running is going, and the latest developments in her Accessory Navicular Syndrome. And she shares stories about interviewing some of her first guests on the Grounded podcast, including the legendary Billy Mills, Jordan Marie Daniel, and Meb Keflezighi (who surprisingly FaceTimed Dinée — who was in her pajamas — before their interview). Our guest today is coach Mario Fraioli, a 2:27 marathoner who hosts the Morning Shakeout podcast and publishes the newsletter of the same name. Mario coaches a wide variety of elite and sub-elite runners and has been involved in the running industry as an editor, book author, coach, podcaster, speaker, and thought leader for the better part of two decades. He's also one fast dude, running a blistering 4:09 mile. And I'm very fortunate to call Mario a friend. In this conversation, we're discussing longer training cycles and why you might be interested (or not) in lengthening the cycle in which you plan your training. We discuss: The nuances of longer training cycles The goals they aim to accomplish The practical difficulties of longer cycles Why most everyone sticks with a 7-day cycle The #1 skill you must learn if you adopt a longer training cycle For more coaching guidance, check out Team Strength Running! Thank you Elemental Labs Our sponsor, Elemental Labs, helped make this episode possible. The day before I recorded this, I rode my bike in the heat for nearly two and a half hours at altitude and I'd like to thank ELEMENT CITRUS SALT for the quick post-ride recovery. Welcome to Episode 41 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite skyrunner, Hillary Allen. Hillary is such a fascinating, multi-dimensional person and athlete. In addition to establishing herself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world (hence her trail nickname of "Hillygoat"), she is a scientist and teacher, with a masters degree in neuroscience, physiology and structural biology, a trail running coach, a gravel cyclist, and now also an author. Her book, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds, shares her story of survival and recovery after she had a life threatening accident during a 50k Skyrace in Norway. She was nearly halfway through the race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed ridge, breaking two ribs, fracturing her back, rupturing a ligament in her foot, and breaking both wrists. It's a miracle that she was alive, and that she did not injure her head or suffer from other more severe outcomes. She was told she would never run again, but after a lot of rehab and mental fortitude, Hillary made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing. Hillary and I did not rehash the details of her accident , as she has done that plenty of times already. However, it's an incredibly powerful and amazing story - so if you are not familiar with Hillary or even if you are, I encourage you to read or listen to her book, and/or check out some of her other podcasts interviews that she has done that deep dive into all the details of her accident and recovery. I loved her two episodes (Episode 49 and 168) on The Morning Shakeout with Mario Fraioli, and Science of Ultra had a great one too (she has been doing the podcasting rounds lately for her book, so you can find her all over). Instead, as you'd expect from my Athlete Nutrition Profile Series, we focused on the nutrition side of her story - how it has evolved throughout her life and the role nutrition has played in her extensive and ongoing recovery process - with a few detours along the way (Bugs as food anyone? Yep, we go there!). Hillary, thank you for chatting with me! You are such an inspiration and I hope to see you in Santa Cruz during your book tour. I'd take you for a run in the redwoods, but even with you coming back from an injury, there's no way I'll be able to keep up with you!Enjoy!Links & Resources:Hillary's WebsiteFollow on Instagram, Facebook, and TwitterHillary's book - Out and BackOther Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Have nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? “Instead of focusing on how fast I could go, or how many miles I could run, my main mission every day was to see how many calories I could burn. It became a game. I got more excited by seeing low numbers on the scale than I did by seeing faster splits on my watch.” - Mario FraioliWelcome to Episode 12 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring running coach, writer, and podcast host, Mario Fraioli. Mario is deeply entrenched in the running scene, and there's a good chance you have already read or listened to something that he created. He has been running competitively since high school, coaching runners since 2004, was a Senior Editor at Competitor magazine for six years, and in 2015 launched the morning shakeout, consisting of a weekly newsletter and podcast. I subscribe to both and highly encourage you do the same! So much great content. I was grateful to catch Mario in late September, during a short window of time that he had between vacation and work travel. He was very generous with his time and all the details of his athletic and nutrition story. In particular, Mario has been very open about his past struggles with disordered eating as a young athlete just out of college, and we focused on this quite a bit - so if this is a topic of interest to you, definitely have a listen. A bit of background on Mario - he was a cross-country All-American at Stonehill College, and has raced competitively from the mile to ultramarathon distances. He is based in the Bay Area with his wife, and currently has a full roster of coaching clients while training for a variety of races himself. He actually broke his 11-year marathon PR at CIM last year, and is running the NYC marathon for the first time this November! Good luck, Mario - looking forward to hearing how NYC goes!Links & Resources:Mario's Website: https://mariofraioli.comThe Morning Shakeout newsletter and podcast: https://themorningshakeout.comFollow Mario on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (@mariofraioli)An article Mario wrote about his disordered eating Other Announcements:Please help keep this podcast ad-free by visiting my Patreon PagePlease show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback?
