I had the pleasure and privilege of being the start and finish line race announcer at the inaugural WineShine Half Marathon in Napa Valley this past weekend — and bonus! The day before the race, I got to host a live show at the Silverado Resort and Spa with superstar guests Alysia Montaño and Stephanie Howe. We talked a lot about the highs that come with racing (like Stephanie's Western States win, and the time Alysia ran the 800m in the U.S. National Championships at eight months pregnant), and we talk about the tough stuff. The ruts. The losses. The disappointments. Alysia and Stephanie are proof that this sport can make your dreams come true and break your heart a few times along the way. Stephanie Howe is a heavy hitter from the ultra-endurance world who holds a PhD in Nutrition and Exercise Science. As an elite trail and mountain runner, Stephanie has won the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run and holds the course records for the Bandera 100k and Lake Sonoma 50 miler. Stephanie's doctoral dissertation focused on the influence of exercise intensity on appetite in endurance-trained women. She is passionate about helping people learn how to fuel for competition and long-term health, and currently coaches runners and provides nutritional counseling. Stephanie answers a variety of questions from Strength Running listeners on training and race nutrition, along with some of the controversial fad diets and nutrition strategies: The ins and outs of marathon fueling - is it ever too late in the race to fuel? How to use different types of fuels at various stages of longer races A “pyramid” plan for ultra fueling Should you still carb load before races? How to simplify good nutrition for a busy family with mix and match meals The benefits of using a nutritionist Her take on the Keto diet, intermittent fasting, the carnivore diet, and bonk runs Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Stephanie on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook Visit Stephanie's website Check out Strength Running's Nutrition for Runners program Sign up for more free nutrition Q&A! Thank you Elemental Labs! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

Stephanie Howe Vice President of Ted Brown Music joins us for this episode.Ted Brown Music has been a fixture in Tacoma and Washington State for the past 90 years. With six locations across the state. If you grew up in the area and were in a school band program there is a strong likelihood that your instrument came from Ted Brown. When Ted Brown Music wanted to start exploration camps to introduce kids to music. Stephanie was tasked with making that happen. TBM Outreach is the result. As a non-profit they are able to reach potential participants through the school system. One of the ways the outreach program works is by accepting musical instrument donations. The repair techs volunteer their time and repair the instruments and then give the instruments back to kids who want to play music but do not have the money to rent or buy an instrument. The Live It OUTLOUD program is an 8 week summer program that shows kids 12 to 18 how to be in a band. Featuring professional musicians as mentors the kids are placed into bands and provided hands on instruction. The program ends in a concert where the bands showcase their new found skills.Stephanie shares a lot of stories and insights about Ted Brown Music and the Ted Brown Music Outreach program. It's amazing that this company is so generous and supportive of kids in the greater Tacoma area and throughout Washington State. Thanks for tuning into this episode of the Exploring Washington State Podcast! About This Episode:In this week’s episode, Hillary Allen interviews ultrarunner and fellow CTS Coach Stephanie Howe, Ph.D. They discuss Stephanie’s approach to running, nutrition, and experiences during and after her pregnancy. As well as Stephanie’s view on being a mother and an athlete and message to others to not have to choose between the two.Episode Highlights:Balancing being a mother and athletePracticing grace and patience with your new body Navigating running pre and post-pregnancyCommon misconceptions about pregnancy and nutritionGuest Bio – Stephanie Howe, Ph.D.:I grew up in Minnesota, where I developed my affinity for cold winters and Nordic skiing. I participated in pretty much every sport there was (hello fastpitch softball!), until my junior year of high school where I decided my genetics better suited me for endurance sports. I attended Northern Michigan University on a Nordic ski scholarship, where I was a two-time All-American in cross country running. No, not a typo. I “tried really hard” to be a skier, but was a much more talented runner. After graduated NMU with a B.S. in Exercise Science, I pursued a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Montana State University. Bozeman Montana is where I really fell in love with running in the mountains. But it wasn’t until I moved to Oregon that I started to dabble in trail and ultra races. While starting to explore the trails a bit more, I completed my Ph.D. in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology from Oregon State University. My dissertation study examined the impact of exercise intensity on appetite hormones in elite female runners. Fitting. Upon graduating, I worked as a professor at Oregon States and COCC (community college in Bend, OR), but ultimately decided I wanted to pursue nutrition and coaching. In 2012 I started a nutrition business, working to help all walks of people learn to eat better for health and/or performance. I did a bit of coaching on the side, but really started coaching with CTS at the end of 2019. I’m thrilled to be working with athletes, as I learn as much from them and they do from me.I currently compete, mostly in ultramarathon races, but also dabble in a bit of everything: nordic skiing, skimo, cyclocross, gravel races, adventure racing, climbing, paddling, etc. You name it, I’ve probably tried it. My favorite place is in the mountains, preferably the Alps. I have raced Western States 100 (2014 Champion), UTMB, CCC, Lake Sonoma 50, Bandera 100k, Way Too Cool 50k, and many, many other races.Read More About Stephanie Howe, Ph.D.:Website: https://trainright.com/coaches/stephanie-howe/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephaniemariehoweFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/stephaniehowerunsListen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform
“All of this adversity that we've been dealing with, you know, adversity is nothing new to me. I'm officially claiming that I'm the dean of Adversity University. As an immigrant, as a brown-skinned man, as someone—who, Spanish is my first language—having to always assimilate, having to always adapt, having always to comfort others with the comfort of who you are, those are just daily adversity situations and circumstances that I've existed with, so adversity is nothing new. And I've dealt with so many other adversities, from emotional to life, just like everybody else. We all have our stuff and it's how you face and deal with those things that build up your character, you know? It's no different than, ‘Sure, maybe I've placed well in a certain race,' and honestly I hate to say this but I can care less how well I do or not, but that moment we described earlier where it took me 3-1/2 hours to walk 7 miles while I watched Stephanie win Western States—that to me was very character-building and a really, really important part of who and what I am today and how I can utilize that as a skillset and a toolset to face life.” Stephanie Howe and Jorge Maravilla are quite the power couple and it was a treat to sit down with the two of them recently at their home here in Marin County, where we all live. A little on their respective running backgrounds: Stephanie is the 2014 Western States Endurance Run champion, she's finished in the top 10 at UTMB, and won numerous other races at various distances over the course of her career. Jorge is two-time national champion on the trails at the 100 mile and 100K distances, he won the Masters national cross country title in 2018, and he's also got a 2:21 marathon personal best to his credit. In this conversation, we talked a little about running, but mostly about how their relationship came to be, navigating new beginnings, their different backgrounds growing up, and becoming parents together recently—and all of this was intertwined around themes of respect, trust, community, exploration, and a lot more. Stephanie Howe has been a top ultrarunner for a decade. She's achieved great things in the sport including winning one of the world's most important races, the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, which she did in 2014. While she's been on the top for a long time, Stephanie has also been through some tough challenges both in her personal and athletic life. Last year, 2019, was a particular tough year for her as she went through both a surgery and a divorce and all the psychological and emotional pain that came as a result. We talk a lot about what she learned from such a shitty year and how she feels she's emerged a better and stronger version of herself. Stephanie recently announced that she's expecting a baby boy in 2021, so we also spend a lot of time discussing motherhood and how it will relate to her future as an athlete. This one is full of good vibes. In this episode of the KoopCast Coach Jason Koop speaks with Stacy Sims and Stephanie Howe.Today’s episode of the podcast is with none other than Dr. Stacy Sims. For the last 20 years, Stacy has been relentlessly informing the sports science community that women are not small men, and this has been no easy task. Her latest pursuit in this endeavour includes a new on-line class all about women’s physiology that both my athletes and our coaches have taken. Her bestselling book ROAR has been a roadmap that women, coaches and athletes alkie can use to tailor exercise programming and nutrition specifically to the female physiology. Stacy is sought out lecturer, sports scientist as well as a kick ass endurance athlete. She is also a personal friend of mine and personally enlightened me on how I need to tailor my coaching principles for women. She has helped me tailor heat adaptation protocols for athletes and I will wholeheartedly admit that the rice ball recipe in Training Essentials for Ultrarunning was stolen from her. In this podcast we do a little bit of personal reflection, including some of her experiences in the sport of ultrarunning, as well as training and nutrition do’s and don’ts for female ultrarunners. And, to make sure I’m not just some dude opining on how women should train, I also brought on one of our coaches Stephane Howe to help illuminate the subject further with her experience as an athlete as well as a coach. We discuss the big differences between men and women in terms of training and nutrition for ultrarunning. We also discuss what training and nutrition strategies women should avoid. On the show today I have Stephanie Howe, an athlete and academic who has some great insights on how to train, eat, and live. Stephanie got her PhD in Nutrition & Exercise Science and helps athletes of all levels and types get the most of food and take their performance to the next level. If you're anything like me, consistently maintaining a convenient and healthy diet is a constant challenge and so talking with Stephanie helped debunk some of the endless misinformation about food out there. On top of that, she has a thing or two to say about what it takes to build a career and lifestyle that aligns with what you really care about. I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Alright, without further ado here is my conversation with Stephanie Howe. Enjoy! Episode Resources: Stephanie's website, Instagram and Twitter Recipes Clif Athlete

CTS Coaches Jason Koop, Stephanie Howe and Adam St. Pierre discuss the dumbest and most embarrassing nutrition mistakes they have ever seen (or done). Don't make these mistakes!
Host Jason Koop speaks with Stephanie Howe, PhD and David Clark about plant based diets and if they are right for ultrarunners.
“One of the really cool things about trail and ultrarunning in particular is people go so far into the unknown and I think that, as an element of humanity, doing something where there's a legitimate chance that you're going to utterly fail and get taken off by a helicopter—right, that's going to happen tomorrow, people are going to get flown out by helicopters—the fact that there's a sport that people can participate in that has these neat elements to it, I think it's good for everybody. It's obviously good for me because I'm in the sport, I'm in it professionally and I earn a living doing it, but I just think it's good for society to have those things that can really test you, so I just hope that the sport continues to maintain its edge, attract new people, be viable, and be fun to come out and do these types of events.” Really enjoyed sitting down with a coaching colleague of mine, Jason Koop, for this week's episode of the podcast. Koop is one of the most highly respected and successful coaches in ultrarunning. He's the head ultrarunning coach for Carmichael Training Systems, a company he's been working for since 2001. Koop ran collegiately at Texas A&M and he's coached athletes of all ages and ability levels over the course of his career, including some notable ones such as Western States champion Kaci Lickteig, Dylan Bowman, Dakota Jones, Stephanie Howe, and others. We caught up a couple weeks ago in Chamonix, France, where we were both supporting athletes during the UTMB festival of races, and a few days before he was about to set off for the Tor des Géants, a 330K trail race through Italy's Aosta Valley. (Ed. note: Koop finished 27th overall in 97 hours and 6 minutes.) We got into a lot of coaching nerdery in this one, including the path Koop has traveled to get where he is today, the importance of education, experience, and observation as it pertains to coaching, how his mentors and colleagues have made him a better coach, balancing volume and intensity in training, how he responds to criticisms of his employer and why he doesn't just start his own coaching company, the growth of the competitive side of ultrarunning in recent years, and much more. Stephanie and I sat down while she was in Boston for the marathon, just after we shared a run around the Charles River. Stephanie grew up in Minnesota, and raced Nordic Skiing and Cross Country at Northern Michigan University. She fell in love with running on the trails after college in Bozeman Montana, where she was studying Exercise Physiology at Montana State University before she moved further West to Oregon to pursue a doctoral program at the University of Oregon studying Human Physiology and ultimately earning her PhD in Nutrition and Exercise Science. Stephanie is the 2014 Western States champion, Course Record holder at the Lake Sonoma 50 Miler and has many other professional career highlights both academically and athletically. Stephanie is passionate about nourishing the body through physical movement and real food. She also makes incredible pizza (trust me!) and loves cooking for and eating with friends. We talked a lot about this some of the other components of running that fuel her passion for the sport, and what she’s seen change over the years in the trail running scene. Stephanie runs her own coaching and nutrition business, and also runs at the professional level for North Face, Clif Bar, Nathan, Squirrels Nut Butter, Julbo, Kahtoola, Drymax and InsideTracker!
