Aloha, and welcome to another Hawaii Vacation Connection podcast, hosted by Bruce Fisher, aka Aloha Bruce. As we transition into the winter season in Hawaii, it's a good time to reflect on what these seasonal changes mean for your vacation plans. Though Hawaii is known for its consistent tropical climate, the islands do experience two distinct seasons: summer and winter. Let's dive into what sets them apart and how you can make the most of your Hawaiian getaway this winter. Understanding Hawaii's Two Seasons: Winter and Summer Unlike the traditional four-season climate, Hawaii experiences just two primary seasons: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo). While the temperature difference is relatively small, there are noticeable changes in weather patterns and tourism trends. Winter typically runs from October to April, bringing cooler temperatures, increased rainfall, and the return of the beloved trade winds. This year, weather forecasts predict a wetter-than-average season due to a La Niña pattern, which is expected to bring more rain, especially on the windward sides of the islands. While some may worry about the impact of rain on their vacation, Aloha Bruce advises that winter is still a great time to visit. The rain is often brief, and it contributes to the lush landscapes that Hawaii is famous for. The cooler temperatures and refreshing trade winds make it an ideal time to explore the islands. Here's an illustration depicting the La Niña weather pattern's impact on Hawaii, showing the changes in sea surface temperatures, wind patterns, and rainfall distribution. Winter Activities and Events in Hawaii Winter is a unique season in Hawaii, offering experiences that you can't find during the summer months. Here are some highlights: Big Wave Surfing on the North Shore: From November through December, the North Shore of Oahu becomes the hub for surfing enthusiasts. The famous Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series and the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational draws surfers from around the globe. Even if you're not a surfer, watching these incredible athletes tackle massive waves is a thrilling experience. Whale Watching: Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii's warm waters during the winter to give birth. The best time to see them is between November and April, with peak sightings from January to March. Maui is often considered the top spot for whale-watching, but you can catch glimpses of these magnificent creatures from any island. Honolulu Marathon and Festivals: December brings the Honolulu Marathon, one of the largest marathons in the U.S., attracting runners worldwide. The islands also come alive with parades, festivals, and cultural celebrations like the Makahiki, a traditional Hawaiian festival dedicated to Lono, the god of agriculture. Holiday Lights and Celebrations: Many hotels and cities, such as Honolulu, host special events and decorations throughout the holiday season. The Honolulu City Lights is popular, featuring parades and festive displays. Why Now is the Best Time to Plan Your Hawaii Vacation If you're thinking about booking a winter trip to Hawaii, Aloha Bruce suggests that now is the perfect time. October and November are typically slower months for tourism, which means more availability and better deals on accommodations. Currently, many hotels are offering promotions like free nights and added amenities, making it an ideal time to take advantage of the softer market. However, if you're planning a trip over the Christmas holidays, be prepared for higher prices and limited availability. It's a popular time for travelers, and accommodations can fill up quickly. Booking well in advance can help you secure the best rates and options. Insider Tips for a Hassle-Free Vacation Planning a Hawaii vacation can be overwhelming, especially with so much information online. That's where Hawaii Aloha Travel comes in. With over 22 years of experience,

In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Patti Catalano Dillon, who received the prestigious Abebe Bikila Award at the recent TCS New York City Marathon. In the 1980 Marathon, Patti became the first American female to break 2:30 in the marathon, finishing second to Grete Waitz. Patti scored many major road race victories in her meteoric career, including 5 at the Ocean State Marathon (Rhode Island) and 4 in the Honolulu Marathon. Patti explains her unique background, including her first run (in Earthshoes) around a cemetery in Quincy, MA, and her first marathon experience. "I thought I was going to die." She also discusses her continuing involvement in Native American running. Before talking to Patti, George and Amby discuss the biggest recent news in running. Amby was disappointed by how slowly the elite women ran at NYC, suggesting that maybe they should have their fees reduced commensurate with their slow times (the 1980 Patti Catalano would have been right with them). But he was impressed by the 3:19 finish of 6' 9" former hockey star Zdeno Chara. George marvelled at how the NYC Marathon once again seemed to knit an entire city together. At a time of universal concern over several wars, various groups chose not to stage protests around the Marathon. He also enjoyed a dinner gathering of some of his longtime favorite marathon runners.Where to find “Running: State of the Sport” Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Audible, Pandora, or Google Podcasts. Jim Barahal's first career would have been enough. After graduating from medical school he moved to Hawaii, started making house calls – unheard of in 1982 – and built a thriving practice, “Doctors on Call,” with 19 clinics and 60,000 patients a year, then sold most of it to Hawaii Pacific Health. He then took over the Honolulu Marathon in 1987, and built it into the world's biggest by 1995. Take-aways: Consistency beats talent (the marathoner's credo!); the business you start in is often not the business you end up in; if you recognize the hidden niche where others don't can be a great opportunity. By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch In the late 1970s, Hawaii had the most runners per-capita than any other state. Some called it the “running capital of the world.” Hawaii was also an early adopter of the 100-mile race and other ultras distances races. Similar to the Fort Mead 100 in Maryland (see episode 75), Hawaii’s first 100-milers grew out of ultra-distance relays and shorter ultras. In 1976, “Primo Ultramarathon and Relays” began at Hawaii Kai on the eastern tip of Oahu, using a four-mile paved road loop. A solo 50-miler was included and by 1978 expanded into solo distances of 50K, 50-miles, 100K, and 100 miles. A massive 40-mile relay was also held each year with teams of ten runners. Running on the islands exploded. This popularity did not happen by chance. It came about because of many key individuals who devoted much of their lives to make distance running races available to the general public in Hawaii. To have an appreciation of the first 100-milers established in Hawaii, one must learn about the rich running history that evolved there over the years. Please help support this podcast. Norman Tamanaha – The Father of Distance Running in Hawaii Distance running took place on the Hawaiian islands for centuries. Legends exist of ultrarunners running around the various islands well before the Kingdom of Hawaii was established. During the years before World War II, Norman K. Tamanaha (1907-1977) of Palama, Hawaii, emerged as a top runner when he won the Diamond Head five-miler in 1937. The first known marathon held in the islands was in 1943 from Moiliili to Makapuu. In 1946 Tamanaha became the Hawaiian AAU 10-mile champion, and he was the first Hawaiian to finish the Boston Marathon the following year. He dominated Hawaiian races for a decade in his 40s and finished the Boston Marathon a total of five times. His best performance there came in 1952 when he finished in fifth place with 2:52:10. He achieved great fame on the islands, organized many races, was a longtime high school track coach, and became known as “the father of distance running in Hawaii.” Roger Toguchi - AAU Races in Hawaii As early as 1954, the AAU in Hawaii was organized and became active in putting on road races of various distances including the Hawaiian AAU Marathon. Roger S. Toguchi (1924-1978), a service station owner, was the chairman of the AAU Hawaiian long distance running committee for many years. He was a respected running pioneer who helped a generation of long-distance runners. He designed the initial marathon course to finish in front of his service station. Continuing into the 1960s, Toguchi made a huge contribution, including financially, to amateur athletics in the Islands, not only to distance running but also to weightlifting and women’s track. For his efforts, in 1962 he was awarded a life-time membership in the AAU. From 1963-66, the Hawaiian AAU Marathon was run as loops at Kapiolani Park and then changed to follow a route that later became the course for the Honolulu Marathon. Johnny Faerber Johnny Faerber (1936-) was a legendary runner in Hawaii. He won the 1967 Hawaii marathon and recalled, “I was the only one to finish in ’67. We got started at 8 a.m. and it was really hot by the time we got out to Hawaii Kai. There were six or seven other guys running, but they all dropped out. We didn’t have water stops or any of that stuff then." In 1971 Tamanaha helped move the marathon to Maui and in 1976 it was renamed to “Maui Marathon.” Tamanaha died at the age of 70 in 1977 and Toguchi died at the young age of 53 in 1978. Kapiolani Park Kapiolani Park, in Honolulu on the east end of Waikiki, became the centerpiece for Hawaiian running.

This week I'm excited to bring you all a conversation I had with John Sprankel of The Oahu Coastline Trail. Big thank you to John for being so patient on getting this episode out! John Sprankel is an Eagle Scout and US Army veteran that graduated from Georgia Southern Universitywith a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, where he met and married his wife, Tori. Since then, their careers lead them to Winston-Salem, North Carolina and later to Honolulu, Hawaii, in order to pursue the opportunity to ive in paradise, while also demonstrating to their daughter, Rowan, the value of travel, meeting new people, and seizing opportunities. With a civilian career path that has always focused around logistics and leadership consultation, the availability of time that came from the COVID shutdowns provided an opportunity to develop the idea of hiking around the island of Oahu from a passing thought to a viable endeavor. While training for the Honolulu Marathon in 2019, the idea of circumnavigating the island transitioned from anidea for a fun challenge to a backpacking thru-hike, and, finally, to a scouting trip to develop a recognizedNational Scenic Trail. Working with the Hawaii DLNR and the National Park Service, John has been working to identify the many facets of a National Scenic Trail that this pathway will need to meet in order to fulfill the requirements said status, while also working to generate interest via Instagram (@the_oct_project) by bloggingthe 100 days leading up to the start of the scouting trip. Oh boy, do we have a good episode for you this week on The Just Athletics podcast. Our guest, Don Kardong, has his fingerprints all over the American distance running scene the last 50 years. Don had a remarkable career at Stanford University, where he held school records in the 2 mile, 3 mile, and the 6 mile, graduating in 1971. Some of the big achievements of Don's running career after Stanford include finishing fourth place the 1976 Olympics in the marathon, just three seconds from the bronze medal, in a sensational 2:11:16, running 12:57.6 in the three-mile race behind these guys named Prefontaine and Shorter at Hayward Field in 1974, and winning both the 1976 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta and the 1978 Honolulu Marathon in Hawaii. Don's impact goes far beyond his athletic achievements. He has been a prominent journalist in the sport of running since the early 1980s, he served as a contributing editor at Running magazine from 1980 to 1983, and a contributing editor (1983–1985) and senior writer (1985–1987) for The Runner magazine as well. Since 1987, he has been a contributing writer for Runner's World magazine also. He has also been one of the top road race directors in the country and served in a leadership role as the President of the Road Runners Club of America from 1996-2000. He founded one of the best road races in the country in 1977 when he started the Bloomsday Run in Spokane, WA, and has served as the race director at times and been heavily involved in that amazing event. This man also has a bridge named after him and an ice cream flavor. Who else can say that?We can't thank Don enough, this was an amazing episode, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Thanks Don! I went to this urgent care in Waikiki many years ago for my frozen shoulder and he was my physician. He explained about how we can't avoid pain, but suffering can be controled and it's completely optional. The world of premier sporting events has been turned upside down during this global health crisis. Today we sit down with organizers of the Honolulu Marathon, the Honolulu Century Ride, and the Waikiki Roughwater Swim.
In the lead up to 2019’s Ultra Trail Australia, a young runner from the northern suburbs o the Gold Coast materialised and began to train with some of the most experienced trail runners in his area. Young and unsure of his potential, he tackled the 50km race in Katoomba and for the greater part of the race, was keeping pace with the best of the best in Australia and threatening to break into the top 10. His name is Jake Davis. To say 2019 was a remarkable debut year is an understatement. As well as competition at the top level in the UTA 50, Jake went on to run the Honolulu Marathon, his debut in December, recording a finishes time of 2:50 minutes - an extraordinary achievement for a first up marathon.I was fortunate enough to run with Jake recently and we discussed the year, in partiuclar those two races, but also what he has gained from training with experienced, race hungry and determined athletes, and the influence this has had on his short but successful running story. So, join Jake on a run as his shares with us his running story.
Sunday, December 8, 2019 Winning the Battle of the Mind [chapter 9] (Honolulu Campus- No Service due to the Honolulu Marathon, see you on December 15th) The essence of the BATTLE OF THE MIND is the conflict between God’s plans for your life and humanistic rationalization/impulses that you can trust no one [including God] with your life plans – only yourself. You may think you are a helpless victim in this battle, being slapped back and forth like a hockey puck, but you are ANYTHING BUT HELPLESS! In fact, GOD HAS PROVIDED ALL WE NEED TO WIN this BATTLE FOR OUR MINDS We continue our series of what it means to be SONS/DAUGHTERS OF GOD, from the book Victory Over the Darkness by Neil Anderson. two scoops Agape, pastor john

Hello Runners, Happy New Year! I hope your 2019 will be happy, healthy and prosperous and of course filled with many strong injury free miles. My first interview of 2019 is with my friend Beth Downs. Beth is an amazing runner and her story will not only touch you but will also inspire all that listen. If you are a mom, you will definitely want to listen to this interview. Beth has gone from low self confidence a few years ago and went through a very tough period. Today, she has more confidence than you can imagine! In 2018 she ran 3,539 miles and many of those miles was pushing in her beautiful little girl Ella in the jogger. She is a spin instructor at the Mind Over Matter Athlete (https://www.mindovermatterathlete.com/) . I think the world of Beth and you will too once you hear her story. In this episode I also go into New Year Running Resolutions. Most of us don't stick with them... Surprise! So if you are an existing runner that would like to become stronger and faster in 2019 or if you are a want to start running, I give one piece of advice that will increase your chances of sticking with it. Join a local running group! Yes...a running group. I spent several years of my life running by myself but when I joined a running group, my entire world changed. My running became more fun and I met some of the most wonderful people on the planet that are very solid friends to this day. I've seen many lives change once they joined a running group. Even here on Maui, I could tell you story after story of what our running group has done for people. Sure you may feel uncomfortable when you first show up but you will find that runners will welcome you with open arms and you will soon feel like family. I give some tips on how to find a running group in your area. So just show up! During the inspirational and motivational news segment, I talk about two young men, 8 year old Nate Viands and 12 year old Riley Herradura that both recently completed a marathon but have incredible stories behind them. And an update on Gene Dykes who was attempting to break the 70-74 age group world record. Thank you everyone who is listening to my Podcast and really hope you are enjoying it. So stoked to bring you Episode 121 of The BibRave Podcast, featuring several past guests and more fascinating conversation. Remember back in Episode 115, when we talked with AfterShokz CMO, Kim Fassetta (from Episode 104), her coach, Global runWestin Concierge and Tim's former running coach, Chris Heuisler (Episode 25 and Episode 77), and sports psychologist, Dr. Justin Ross (Episode 26 and Episode 93)? Well, we heard so many good things from you the listeners, and we personally found the conversation so engaging, we asked the three of them to come back and do one more check-in before Kim takes on the Honolulu Marathon. Like with Episode 115, this week's episode does not disappoint. The four jump right into some heavy-hitting issues like internal honesty and how important transparency is to one's training, partners, one's self, and also why such honesty is so difficult for basically... everyone. And once again, Coach Chris and Dr. Ross were phenomenal guides and partners throughout the conversation. So much of what Kim shares resonates with all of us at Team BibRave, and we're so grateful that she's been willing to share every aspect of her journey - the good and the rough - with us and with you. If you've enjoyed any of our past convos with her and you want to give Kim any kudos or shout-outs, please do so on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #BibChat and #BRPodcast. Here it is - Episode 115 of The BibRave Podcast! This week's episode is Straight. Up. Fascinating. We get to be a fly on the wall for an intimate conversation between an athlete, her coach, and a sports psychologist. A big thank you to our friends at AfterShokz for sponsoring and a City Winery Chicago for hosting our recording session. The athlete in question is AfterShokz CMO, Kim Fassetta (from episode Episode 104), her coach throughout training for the Honolulu Marathon, Global runWestin Concierge and Tim's former running coach, Chris Heuisler (Episode 25 and Episode 77), and sports psychologist making his third appearance on The BibRave Podcast (Episode 26 and Episode 93), Dr. Justin Ross. We talk about a lot of the emotional and intellectual pitfalls that so many runners and racers struggle to overcome, and it is so interesting to follow the interactions between Kim, her coach, and a professional psychologist. There's a lot of positive reframing and working through some issues that a lot of you out there will definitely relate to. “I wanted to prove to everyone that all the sacrifices I’d made and dumb decisions I made were worth it.” Nick Symmonds was a professional track and field athlete for 12 years, specializing in the 800 meters. He made two Olympic teams — the first when he was just 22 years old — and represented Team USA in Beijing and London. Nick, who lives in Eugene, OR, and is the CEO of Run Gum, retired from professional racing last year, and is now a proud, self-professed “hobby jogger.” He made his marathon debut at the 2017 Honolulu Marathon, and is now training to break three hours in the 26.2-mile distance this spring. Here’s what you’ll get in this episode: — How Nick got into running (3:20) — When he realized he could make a career out of running and the life-changing training decision that launched his professional career (5:20) — Nick’s advice for mastering the 800m (8:45) — What it’s like competing at the Olympics (11:00) — When he was “the most nervous he’s ever been for a race” (12:35) — How Nick developed his mental strength and overcame “the rollercoaster of emotions” (14:00) — The sacrifices he made to become an Olympian (16:45) — How he made the decision to retire in 2017, and how he felt the day after his retirement (17:45) — Why he wanted to run a marathon (20:45) — Why he says the Boston Marathon pisses him off and “is B.S.” and that running it would be going against his core beliefs (26:00) — The Run Gum story (30:00) — What Nick sees as the biggest problems in professional track and field (35:00) — Nick’s take on doping in professional sports and lifetime bans (37:00) — The latest on Nick’s love life — plus how he ended up on a date with Paris Hilton (40:40) Follow Nick: Instagram @nicksymmonds: https://www.instagram.com/nicksymmonds/ Twitter @nicksymmonds: https://twitter.com/NickSymmonds Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nick.symmonds/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeXJQ2GQh4BoRuAEkteU0Wg Website: https://www.nicksymmonds.com/ Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1: https://www.instagram.com/aliontherun1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aliontherun/ Twitter @aliontherun1: https://twitter.com/aliontherun1 Blog: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/13333410 Thank you for listening to and supporting the Ali on the Run Show! Carrie interviews 2-time Olympian and RunGum CEO Nick Symmonds! Nick discusses his debut marathon at the 2017 Honolulu Marathon, life after professional racing and his passion for entrepreneurship. Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Nick Symmonds Nick is an American athlete and entrepreneur. As an athlete, Nick has found much success on the track and in the mountains. A two-time Olympian, Nick competed for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. Though he has focused on the 800 meters for the majority of his career, he also has a personal best in the mile of 3 minutes and 56 seconds. Nick has yet to run a marathon, but it is something he hopes to do soon! In the mountains, Nick has built up an impressive resume in a very short time. He is currently working on collecting all 50 state high-points and has publicly expressed his desire to climb the 7 Summits, the tallest mountain on each continent. When Nick isn't running or climbing he can be found working on the business that he co-founded in 2014, Run Gum. Nick currently serves as the CEO for the fast growing energy company. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest.
It’s been a big few years for professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace. In 2016, the Yale graduate won the Olympic Trials in the 800-meter event in Eugene, OR, and went on to represent Team USA in Rio, where she finished eighth. She chased that with a personal best in the 800 meters in Zurich, running a 1:59.47. A few months later, Kate's contract with Oiselle, her sponsor of four years and her first major professional sponsor, was up, and she announced her decision to join Nike, the industry behemoth despised by many at Oiselle. Then, this past fall, Kate officially joined Portland, OR-based Bowerman Track Club, where she now trains alongside some of professional running’s greatest, fastest women, including Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg, and Emily Infeld, and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. On this episode, Kate lets us all inside the head of a hardworking athlete and Olympian. She shares what it’s like training with some of the fastest women in the world, and talks about the “not glamorous” parts of racing. She explains her recent sponsorship decisions, breaks down how to master the 800m, and talks about why the 800-meter race at the Trials was “a shitshow.” Plus, Kate shares what it’s like competing at the Oympics — and what the athlete’s village is really like — and talks about how to deal with injuries, her fitness-world-famous mom, the comeback she’s hoping for this February, and what’s next. Meet Nick Symmonds. He is truly a man on the move. Nick is a 2-time Olympian, has medaled at 13 USA Championships (including 9 Golds). Along the way he learned to love running (believe it or not, he did NOT love running when he started). He became a staunch advocate for athletes' right. He started Run Gum - an incredible, innovative company that solves a problem many athletes face. He wrote a book "Life Outside the Oval Office." He is also after the State High Points & 7 Summits which you can read about on his site (this is all in his "down time.") He travels, does public speaking, and generally lifts and inspires people everywhere he goes. You definitely need to check out his Youtube channel for both fun and thought-provoking episodes. All in all, Nick has definitely a been-there / done-that kinda guy. Many people would stop-there! But not Nick. He recently announced his retirement from track & field racing, but it wasn't just a retirement that he announced. In the same breath, he declared his next goal - the Honolulu Marathon in December. A goal that both scares and excites him. I feel so lucky to chat with Nick about his past, present and future. We dug into what makes Nick tick and I know you will appreciate his openness, honesty and vulnerability.

“Nick Symmonds” has long been a household name in the running world. He is a two-time Olympian, six-time U.S. champion, the 2013 World Championship silver medalist, and the fourth-fastest American of all time in the 800 with a time of 1:42.95. He’s one of America’s best track athletes ever, and, at the age of 33, he’s retiring. Well, at least from the track. Nick’s passion for running and his relentless desire to do more has him turning his sights to a new, slightly different challenge: the marathon. Nick will toe the line at the Honolulu Marathon this December 10th, 2017, and he admits that he’s going to have quite a few barriers to overcome in the months ahead (barriers many of our listeners know too well). Listen in as Nick reflects back on his incredible career, discusses his objectives for both the Honolulu Marathon and his company Run Gum, and shares his insight on the art of setting goals and working towards them. P.S. Make sure you enter the RunAloha Sweepstakes for a chance to win an all-inclusive, 4-day trip to run with Nick Symmonds at the Honolulu Marathon! Questions Nick is asked: 3:48 What would you say have been a couple of career defining moments for you in retrospect? 4:52 When you started running in High School, did you ever envision the career you had? 5:37 What about a low point and how did you get past that? 6:56 What led you to start Run Gum? 8:35 Had you been thinking about this type of product for a while before you started your own company? 10:15 How long does it take for Run Gum to deliver a caffeine peak? 11:28 What led you to decide to retire and has that decision been bittersweet? 12:48 Having retired from the track, but not from running, what made you choose to run a marathon? 14:45 What difficulties do you anticipate as you train for the marathon? 16:57 How have you used visualization in the past? 18:44 Can you tell us about the RunAloha Sweepstakes? 19:40 Can you tell us a little more about Run Gum? 23:18 How smoothly has the Run Gum company launched? 24:29 How has starting your own business impacted your decision to retire? 26:22 Why did you choose to sit out the 2015 World Championships? 28:51 Do you have any regrets about it? 30:06 Will you continue fighting for athlete’s rights in the years to come? 31:44 Do you anticipate Run Gum’s antitrust lawsuit against USATF and the USOC will be resolved in time for the next qualification trials? 35:50 How can listeners help facilitate improvement of athlete’s rights? 37:06 What has been your opinion of doping and cheating in the running world? 39:13 How did you continue to compete knowing you were running against runners who were likely doping? 42:31 What is your favorite flavor of Run Gum? Quotes by GUEST: “I didn’t love running; I actually hated it at the time, but I enjoyed practice, I enjoyed the team.” “I wouldn’t necessarily advise athletes to start a brand or company while their still competing.” “I’m going out on my terms. I’m not being forced out for financial reasons or due to injury, my body just doesn’t do what it used to do and that’s OK.” “If you take the time to visualize every single scenario unfolding, then when you’re in the race and you only have a ¼ second to make a decision, you’ve already made it. You’ve already played that out in your mind.” “I’m not saying that Run Gum is for everybody, but if you’re in need of energy and focus in a lightweight, affordable, easily consumed package this is for you.” “As an athlete, you NEED to have an exit plan.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Welcome to episode 52 of the Final Surge podcast. Today we welcome back Olympian and World silver medalist Nick Symmonds who joined us previously on episode 25. In this episode, we talk about Nick’s last race around the oval and his transition from 800m specialist to marathoner. Next week Final Surge has some big news which Nick will be helping us promote, and we’ll be giving away a free year’s supply of Run Gum during this promotion. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page and our Twitter page for full details. Last time we talked you announced this was going to be your last season on a track and then you were going to finish off your career with a marathon. So how did your last race go? How do you think that 800 team that qualified from the US will do at Worlds? You have done thousands of laps around that oval, knowing these were going to be your final two laps racing, what was going through your mind as you were waiting for the race to start? It was hot in Sacramento, but considering the heat, the crowds in the stands were not what I am sure was being hoped for. What do you think we need to do to package track differently to get people back into the stands? Last week I watched the championship race of the Tracktown Summer Series, where you were one of the team managers. I liked the team concept and found it really interesting. I found myself pulling for SF and Portland because of the team managers. What do you think they did successfully that could be used to build off of? You have things you would like to do, but you also know the leadership in the sport. What do you think is the future of the sport? Where do you think we will be in 10 years? Are there any groups you think are doing track right? Do you think the Diamond League or any country is doing it well and growing the sport? One thing I think track can do better is marketing the athletes. Part of that is the athlete doing what they can to build their own fan base. One way you are successful with this is your new Vlog. How did that come about? Who is helping you with these vlogs? What does the production for them look like? In episode 25 you told our listeners that you would be doing a marathon, then in your vlog you announced your marathon is going to be the Honolulu Marathon. Why did you choose this race? Just looking at you, your body has a build of a 800/1500 runner, what are your plans for training, do you plan on trying to drop weight or to see what you can achieve with your current build? How is your nutrition changing? One thing you talk about in the vlog is having goals, what will be your goal after a marathon? An ultra? If you qualify for Boston would you run it? Your Run Gum business is going well and I am sure it is a full-time job. How are you going to balance your business and training schedule? How is your marathon training being handled, are you using your coach? What does a week of training look like right now? Coming into the US 800, what was your peak mileage? One of our listeners would like to know an example of workout(s) planned in the peak mileage phase of your marathon cycle? Run Gum is offering an all expended paid trip to run the Honolulu Marathon with you. Can you tell our listeners about that? We usually end with the Final Surge round, but if anyone wants to hear your answers they can check out episode 25. I want to do something different here. I want to thank you. As a high school coach, when I ask my kids who their favorite runner is the most popular answer is Nick Symmonds. You have been such a great ambassador for the sport. You have been such a great advocate for the athlete. You have given back so much to the sport and have taken time to talk to and inspire kids and sign autographs. I want to thank you for all you have done for the sport and wish you the best.

What we cover: “Don’t let age get in your way.” – Betty Jean McHugh Betty Jean McHugh was born in 1927 in small-town Canada, never knowing that after a childhood that took place in the depression, teen years that took place during World War II, a career that began in Toronto as a nurse, and then after raising four children on the west coast, that – in her 50s, strictly out of the need to kill time while her daughter’s swim team trained, she would quite literally stumble into life as a runner. At the age of 55, she ran her first marathon, and today, 35 years later, she’s a multi-time world record holder in her age group. In 2016, at the age of 89, she ran the Honolulu Marathon, beating the previous world record by an astonishing 92 minutes. And, like so many people preparing to celebrate their 90th birthday this year, she’s doing it the traditional way – by running the Honolulu marathon yet again, and likely setting one more world record along the way. This is a woman who exudes energy and happiness and optimism -- and I like her a lot. Above all, Betty Jean is a shining example of the fact that how we live our own lives isn’t just about ourselves as individuals, it’s about being a beacon of light – of what’s possible for others as well. If you don’t find this chat completely inspiring in terms of serving as a reminder that we can find our bliss and our purpose and our sense of true joy at any age, and that that how we interpret our biological age is entirely our call, then I don’t know what – if anything – will ever serve as so blatant an example.
