In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I spoke with Jenny Apelmo Mattsson. Jenny describes her Expat journey from her native Gothenburg, Sweden to Hamburg, via Berlin. After graduating from music college, Jenny decided that she wanted to try something different and has now called Germany home for the past 10 years. We talk about how she first got into bass playing and her musical background, as well as why Sweden has been able to produce so many excellent musicians. Maybe a lesson we could all learn from? Jenny highlights some of the differences between the music scene in both countries, as well as the perils of playing your own songs to an audience. We get into her work with Torpus and The Art Directors, and of course, how her new album ‘Patterns' came together. Jenny explains some of the themes behind the songs on the album, and why it was important for her to have a backing band that was made-up of both sexes...and we ponder- where have all the female drummers gone? In the Top 5, there's Justin Timberlake, The Big Thief, being stuck in 2010's Indie Music Scene…as well as a plethora of Swedish acts for us to check out… All this and The Beatles singing in German, AND playing in people's back gardens! In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Caleb Sekeres. Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Caleb has been resident in Gwangju, South Korea for close to a decade. You'll hear Caleb tell how he made his way from the North-East of the US to Asia, first working as an actor in numerous professional productions, Shakespeare, and the Avant-garde scene in New York City. We talk Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway and why an actor's life can be such a precarious one. There's also talk of what motivated Caleb to move to Asia in the first place, the strange and unusual things you'll come across while visiting smaller cities in South Korea...and living the dream! Caleb and his wife now run a small bar in Gwangju called Nirvana. Of course, anyone opening a new business it's not easy...and especially when you open it just before the pandemic… Caleb gives us a rundown of how it came about and what they offer...it sounds like a cool place to drop by for a cocktail - if you're in the neighbourhood! All this and the benefits of being a really good dancer! The band: Wix (vocals and guitar), Steel(guitar), Nutsack (Drums), Bear (Guitar), RTB (Bass) and Izzy(Keyboards) wrote the track to perform locally. It was recorded it during the Covid 19 pandemic. “I think everyone has been touched in some way by Dolores O'Riordan and the Cranberies music whether they know the band or not,” said singer and guitarist Wix. “They've heard it on the radio, a party, or some live event, and it has affected them in some way. That's certainly true for all of us. We just wanted to say thanks.” The track has been very warmly received in Brunei and is now available to the rest of the world. In this episode of the podcast, I was joined by Chris Tharp. Chris is an American expat, originally from Seattle, and has been living in Busan, South Korea since 2004 We talk about what brought him to South Korea, his past life as a revolutionary theatre artist, and the adventures of starting out in a new country - from scratch. Moving to another continent to live and work, we hear how Chris was eager to adopt the trappings of a young traveler and to soak it all up…something akin to what Anthony Bourdain became known for. We get into how Chris started blogging in the early years, writing for local magazines, getting into travel writing, and gradually building up a following in the days before social media really took over. He also gives some good advice on what to do...and not to do...to gain exposure for your work. Alongside Brian Aylward, Chris was at the fore-front of bringing stand-up to a group-orientated culture. He recounts how the stand-up comedy scene in South Korea and Busan in particular evolved over the years. We talk dodgy promoters, chasing your dinner around the plate, and why moving to South Korea is a bit like entering the witness protection programme... On the first episode back after our summer break, I was joined by Justin Jardine. Justin talks us through his expat journey from Wisconsin to Hamburg...via Freiburg and Vienna...and we also dig deep into his musical exploits along the way. Discovering guitars and distortion at an early age, Justin really got into the thriving punk scene at home. We talk DIY, Under-The-Radar, and Pop-up gigs and Justin describes how it helped him become more politically and socially aware and how this also led to his musical tastes changing over time. Moving abroad, opened up a whole new avenue of opportunities and possibilities. Who knew that there was a Bluegrass scene in Hamburg? Justin tells us all about it, as well as his main project - Raindance Kid. We talk differences in playing in a band as an expat and playing in one at home, putting shows together and touring, and how he got into playing pedal steel guitar. There's Opera Houses, The Lemonheads, Sturgill Simpson's weird synth player, and just why has Justin been in so many bands with ‘KID' in the name? In this episode of the Can't Find My Way Home podcast, I spoke with American expat, Andy Knowlton. In this first of a two-parter, Andy and I explore how he landed in Korea and his early expat life in France. There's talk of 'Street Poetry' and 'Guerilla Art' and how Andy eventually wanted to bring those words and poems into a visual format. Among the plethora of artistic projects and challenges Andy has undertaken include an annual poetry contest, turning poems into something more vibrant and energetic (akin to the 'Off The Charts' documentary) where your poems are turned into real songs, as well as his Pondicherry Books publishing company. We round things off with a chat about the poet and novelist, Richard Brautigan and what Andy did as way of a homage. In Episode 6, I spoke with 2 guests from Seoul, South Korea. about the 'A City of Han' project. Sollee Bae is the editor of 'A City of Han', as well as the founder and organizer of 'Fiction Writers in Seoul'. Joining Sollee, was Ron Bandun, one of the contributing authors to the project. Ron also writes a column for the Korea Times. A City of Han is a collection of short stories inspired by Seoul and other cities in South Korea. As the sleeve suggests, "there are three things a great city inspires: Romance, Music and Stories." The stories were written by expat writers in South Korea. We get into how the project came together, some of the locations in and around my old stomping ground in Seoul, and themes within the anthology such as social hierarchy and the pressure to fit in. We also discuss 'urban exploring' and whether South Korean literature can rival the success of K-Pop and Korean cinema. Of course, there's also the Top 5 with both a musical and literary twist. A City of Han is released on April 16th 2020 and published by FWS Publishing. It will be available on Amazon and select bookstores across South Korea. Nick and I talk about his Garbage Art Seoul project. How it all came about, the creative process and the seemingly never-ending problem of recycling and what to do with it. We also go into detail on his recent exhibition in Seoul, the move-away from over-reliance on social media, into something more concrete. There's also our Top 5 at the end of the recording...with a bit of a twist. Garbage Art Seoul We as a world entering 2019 need to start seeing environmental problems with a macro lens. the term "global" has rendered society passive. scales and magnitudes of issues have grown with the use of social media outlets. these warnings have become so immense that individual people become overwhelmed. unable to cure the world of its illnesses, individuals become defeated. the global concept needs to be paired down to a local concept. a panoramic viewpoint must be sectioned off. The air, the land, and the sea must be approached as my towns air, my cities land, my county's water. We ought not to wait around for governments to make new laws. We must first follow the laws already in place. Simple steps toward a visual positive impact on our environment. Each individual is presented with a mix of issues. Each town, city, and country faces problems unique to itself. This is the power of collective society. Facing separate issues as one world. Together as these issues are solved locally, we will begin to eradicate them globally. This is why I started Garbage Art. Bringing to light the dumping and littering issues here in Seoul, Korea through beauty. Slowing the pace of life down in order to see the little things around us. I also saw how the natural beauty that already existed was being destroyed by garbage. Too busy and too concerned with self economics, are slowly losing the remainder of the natural beauty here in Seoul. I take their garbage and make it beautiful in Hope's of one day saving the beauty that's being covered up. It's always been there, we just need to find.
