The Dialectic At Work
But Marx Didn't Account For...

The Dialectic At Work

Most professionally trained neoclassical economists have never bothered to read Capital Volume 1—let alone know about the existence of its two companion theoretical volumes (2 and 3) and three historical volumes. While it's generally advisable to refrain from speaking on topics one hasn't deeply studied, bourgeois economics remains full of lively debates peppered with claims that begin: “But Marx didn't account for [fill in the blank].”   This week on The Dialectic At Work, we examine these alleged “absences” in Marx's Capital with Professor Richard Wolff. Since most such omissions stem from ignorance of Volumes 2 and 3, we'll dedicate the next two to three episodes to these critical texts.   Recap: In our last discussion with Prof Wolff, we went over the structure of Capital Volume 1: the question of use-value, exchange-value, and Marx's theory of surplus-value. We then zoomed into the site of the workplace and the working day, via an exploration of chapters 9 and 10 of the first volume. I also want to remind our audiences that in Season 1, we have already covered how Marx's work in these chapters was extended and developed into a theory of class analysis by Richard Wolff and Stephen Resnick in their book Knowledge and Class.   About The Dialectic at Work is a podcast hosted by Professor Shahram Azhar & Professor Richard Wolff. The show is dedicated to exploring Marxian theory. It utilizes the dialectical mode of reasoning, that is the method developed over the millennia by Plato and Aristotle, and continues to explore new dimensions of theory and praxis via a dialogue. The Marxist dialectic is a revolutionary dialectic that not only seeks to understand the world but rather to change it. In our discussions, the dialectic goes to work intending to solve the urgent life crises that we face as a global community. Traditional models are no longer sustainable, and firms need to rethink their strategies, harness real-time transaction data and look to more adaptive infrastructures. Indeed, real-time payments will become the norm, likely to reach 27% of all global payments by 2028. At the same time, growing fraud and compliance burdens are forcing a rethink of data strategies. Kashi, the city of light, stands as a testament to creation, destruction, and ultimately, redemption. This ancient city, bathed in the sacred waters of the Ganges, has a story as old as time itself, intertwined with the divine narratives of Shiva Purana. From Lord Brahma and Vishnu's delusion to Kaal Bhairav's wrathful origin, Kashi has witnessed a play of cosmic forces that ultimately underscored Shiva's supremacy as the lord of creation, destruction, and liberation. The city houses the famed Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, a beacon of spiritual energy believed to be the embodiment of Shiva himself. It is said that death in this sacred city grants moksha, liberation from the cycle of life and death.Contact, follow and support my work - all in one place: https://linktr.ee/NamaskarIndiaBibliography:Eck, D. Talking Volumes: Peter Geye on ‘A Lesser Light'

“A Lesser Light” is Minnesota writer Peter Geye's sixth novel, and he says he couldn't have written it earlier in life. The story revolves around a cold and often hostile marriage. It's 1910, and husband Theodulf is the newly commissioned caretaker of a grand lighthouse situated on the treacherous shore of Lake Superior. His new bride, Willa, has been forced into the marriage by her scheming mother after a family tragedy. The terrain is brooding, the climate unforgiving. Maybe no surprise, the new relationship is equally harsh. But Geye says the complexity of Theodulf and Willa are what make them human, and as he's gotten older, he appreciates the “many shades” of their rocky marriage. “Of all the institutions in our culture, marriage and parenthood are two of the most fraught,” Geye tells host Kerri Miller. “They can be the most beautiful, the most wonderful, the most amazing — and I don't know a whole lot of people who end up together like Theodulf and Willa do. But it's more interesting to me when people like that do.” Talking Volumes: Peter Geye Geye joined Miller on stage at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth on May 1 for a special “on the road” edition of Talking Volumes. They discussed the complications of marriage and family life, why Geye chose to tell this story from many different points of view, and how his many years spent traveling to Lake Superior influenced his book. Chronique des Matières Premières
Les prix du riz continuent à chuter sous l'impulsion des volumes indiens

Chronique des Matières Premières

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 1:57

For nearly five decades after the Second World War, the Iron Curtain divided Europe, forming the longest and most heavily guarded border on earth. No physical combat would take place along this frontier: the risk of nuclear annihilation was too high for that. Instead, the war was fought psychologically. It was a battle for hearts, minds, and intellects. Few understood this more clearly than George Minden, head of a covert intelligence operation known as the “CIA book program,” which aimed to undermine Soviet censorship and inspire revolt by offering different visions of thought and culture. From its Manhattan headquarters, Minden's “book club” secretly sent ten million banned titles into the East. Volumes were smuggled aboard trucks and yachts, dropped from balloons, hidden aboard trains, and stowed in travelers' luggage. Nowhere were the books welcomed more warmly than in Poland, where the texts would circulate covertly among circles of like-minded readers, quietly making the case against Soviet communism. Such was the demand for Minden's books that dissidents began to reproduce these works in the underground. 500,000 Homes? No Chance — Why Canada's Housing Plans Are Falling Apart

The Vancouver Life Real Estate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2025 40:54

In this week we cover some of the most consequential turning points in Canada's housing narrative to date including the breakdown of the Federal Conservative and Liberal housing plans. New home construction is collapsing at a national level—plummeting in cities like Vancouver by as much as 36% year-over-year—just as Canadians are being asked to decide who should lead the country through the next era of growth, or decline. We begin with the Bank of Canada's latest rate decision: after seven cuts in the last 12 months, the BoC held steady at 2.75%, citing uncertainty caused by the ongoing U.S. tariff war. Governor Tiff Macklem emphasized that monetary policy can't fix trade disputes but must focus on maintaining price stability. Although unemployment is rising and growth is slowing, the threat of inflation led the Bank to pause further cuts. At the same time, bond yields are surging, which could soon push mortgage rates higher, adding yet another affordability challenge for buyers.Inflation data offered a brief reprieve, coming in at 2.3% for March—cooler than expected—thanks largely to lower gas prices. Shelter costs remain high but are decelerating, and rents continue to trend downward. National home sales, however, paint a more sobering picture. Volumes fell 5% month-over-month and 9% year-over-year, making this past March the slowest on record since 2009. Despite that, prices have only dipped modestly—just 2.1% year-over-year by HPI, and 3.7% by average price—suggesting the market remains surprisingly resilient even as sentiment erodes. But it's the housing start data that really underlines the problem: Canada posted the lowest monthly housing starts in six years, and it's getting worse. Toronto's pre-sale condo market has all but collapsed. Sales are 88% below the 10-year average, and unsold inventory now sits at a staggering 78 months of supply! That's 6 years! Developers are pulling out, projects are being cancelled or converted to rentals, and there's zero profit margin left in many builds. As construction slows, a severe future housing shortage feels inevitable as the roller coaster continues. Finally, we break down the election housing platforms of both the Liberal and Conservative parties. The Liberals plan to double annual home construction to 500,000, reintroduce tax incentives for rental construction, and create a new government housing agency—yet offer little in the way of realistic execution given Canada hasn't built more than 270,000 homes in a single year in over four decades. Meanwhile, the Conservatives propose slashing GST on new homes up to $1.3M, punishing cities that fail to meet housing targets, and offering financial rewards to those that exceed them. They aim to unleash supply by freeing up federal land and cutting red tape, though critics argue their platform lacks implementation details. If housing affordability matters to you—and it should—then this episode is essential listening. We examine not only the data but the direction each political party is trying to take Canada. With construction grinding to a halt, affordability still out of reach for most, and developers hitting pause across the country, the decisions we make now will define the housing market for the next generation.  _________________________________ Contact Us To Book Your Private Consultation:

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1003: Dealers and analysts react to President Trump's tariff order, as the administration considers a tax deduction for auto loan interest paid. Plus, Fisker Oceans have found new life as a rideshare fleet in NYC.Show Notes with links:Trump's sweeping tariff order is shaking the auto world. The new 25% levy hits nearly all foreign-built vehicles and key components.Analysts predict $4K–$10K price hikes, and Cox Automotive warns that 30% of U.S. vehicle production could be disrupted within a week. GM stock fell 9%, hit hardest due to its reliance on Mexico and South Korea, Ford and Stellantis were down around 2%Ferrari responded by is raising prices by 10%, up to $350K on some models. Even Tesla isn't safe—Elon called the impact “significant” due to global parts sourcing.Michael Wood, GM of JLR Virginia Beach on LinkedIn “This will inadvertently heavily impact a brand that never had jobs here in the first place. The outcome could be disastrous for those working at these stores. Volumes go down, staffs are reduced and displaced.”Rob Malanowski, Internet Director at Ancira Nissan said on LinkedIn “If you're a car shopper, you will get to choose between: paying more for a non-US built vehicle, paying more for a US built vehicle, deciding you don't really need a new car right now. The idea, announced alongside 25% tariffs on imported vehicles, has drawn mixed reactions from dealers and analysts alike.Dealers are split—some say it could help consumers, while others doubt its feasibility.Analysts say the deduction could save buyers around $20 a month, but tariffs could add $60–$90 to payments.Used car prices could rise 9-12% due to increased demand for domestic models. The White House and Speaker Johnson's office have yet to confirm details, including whether the deduction applies to standard tax filers.“I think it's Trump's way of trying to regulate interest rates,” said Ford dealer Nick Anderson, calling it a “pipe dream.”Trump argues the policy will “pay for itself” by increasing U.S. auto production. What happens to thousands of Fisker Oceans after the company goes bankrupt? Professor Richard Wolff's co-author, colleague, and friend, the late Stephen Resnick, would tell his students about his discussion, as a student at MIT, with Paul Samuelson. He asked Samuelson: “What is there in Marx that is both valid and absent in neoclassical theory”? To this, Samuelson responded: “Class analysis.” In this episode, Shahram and Professor Wolff use the dialectic to explore how Marx's magnum opus, Das Kapital, is understood and its connection to class and class analysis. It begins by examining the overall project of Capital and discussing why beginners should read this essential text. Professor Wolff explains the importance of the three volumes in Marx's theoretical scheme, the main differences between the first two volumes, and how they individually contribute to our understanding of the ‘capitalist totality'. Joseph Smith’s Polygamy (Brian Hales 2017 interview)

This is a throwback episode with Brian Hales from 2017. Brian is the author of Joseph Smith's Polygamy, Volumes 1-3, and it's just in time for the Journal of Mormon Polygamy Conference this weekend at the University of Utah. Check out our conversation.... https://youtu.be/WVs0ypGKq5o Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission Canadian Polygamy – Should it be Legal? The Interview GT:  Well I'd like to welcome everybody out here to Gospel Tangents Podcast.  I'm really excited to talk to Dr. Brian Hales.  He's the expert on polygamy, or one of the experts I guess. I'm grateful to have you here and thank you for letting me take some of your time today. Brian:  Rick it's really a privilege for me to be here. GT:  Well thanks.  One of the things I'd like to do is to introduce you to my audience a little bit.  Typically I try to talk to a lot of historians who are doctors but you are the first physician, although I have talked to a physician's assistant as well.  Could you tell us a little bit about your background, even in medicine?  I think you're a Utah man.  Is that right? Brian:  I am actually.  I went to Utah State, grew up in Logan and got a medical degree from University of Utah, so I have a little bit of the Ute blood in me as well. GT:  Aggie and Utah, ok. Brian:  Aggies primarily.  Then I had a member of my family who was involved with Mormon fundamentalism and that kind of steered me over into thinking about polygamy.  This is back in 1989 so it's been quite some time ago.  At that point I was in a residency for anesthesia and I do tell people that my books are part of my full anesthesia services.  You've probably heard me say that joke, but I got interested then in Mormon fundamentalism and published a book, co-authored a book in 1991 dealing with that topic but then later a couple of other books. People were asking me about Joseph Smith's polygamy, and I didn't have answers and really I would argue none of the books did.  Todd Compton's book has some things that were very helpful but he had written biographies and it wasn't focused specifically on Joseph, so there was still a lot of room for research and to also try to figure out some of the historical aspects that really were just big question marks I think in a lot of people's minds. So in 2006-2007 I hired Don Bradley who is a dear friend but also a remarkable researcher and he went out and did a lot of research for me, gathered documents, and I told him to get everything:  anti-Mormon or supportive, whatever he could find.  We wanted to get every known document, and it was interesting because after we had been going about six months, it became obvious that if we kept going, eventually we would be able to put either a transcript or at least a reference to every known document on polygamy within the volumes that we were putting together.  So we got kind of excited about that but that was mostly Don Bradley's work.  But his help, I put together three volumes (vol 1, vol 2, vol 3) on polygamy.  There's been a few new things come out.  This was in 2013 that they were published, but not a lot has come out but a few very important things that we can talk about. GT:  Yeah we'll definitely want to talk about that.  Well great!  I'm glad you talked about how you got interested in fundamentalist Mormonism, I guess.  There are different branches.  Could you just kind of briefly give a sketch of the main ones? I guess we've got the FLDS, AUB.  Are there any others?  Could you give a background on Mormon fundamentalism? Brian:  Well do you mind if I just talk about what's going on in Canada right now? GT:  Sure, that would be great. Brian:  I just got back last week, it was a week ago today from Cranbrook, [British Columbia,] Canada.  That is where they are holding a trial right now for two leading polygamists:  Winston Blackmore and J...

When you think about finance in the nonprofit world, does your mind immediately jump to spreadsheets and budget reports? What if we told you that finance could be transformed into a compelling narrative—one that connects numbers to mission impact? That's exactly what Neil Shah, an experienced interim CFO, is doing with nonprofit financial storytelling.Neil has spent years in the nonprofit sector, feeling the isolation that many CFOs experience. So, he took action, launching a nonprofit CFO roundtable where finance leaders could collaborate, share challenges, and gain insights from one another. “There aren't a lot of opportunities for nonprofit CFOs to connect and learn from each other,” Neil shares. “I wanted to create a space where we could problem-solve together.”One of the biggest challenges in nonprofit finance? Helping leadership and boards understand financial data in a meaningful way. Too often, financial reports become a blur of numbers, leaving stakeholders disconnected from their organization's financial reality. Neil argues that nonprofit CFOs must go beyond traditional reporting methods: “Financial storytelling is the blend of financial data and narrative—it's about showing where an organization has been, where it is now, and where it's going.”Neil talks about his methodology: By analyzing 10+ years of financial trends and utilizing AI tools, Neil helps organizations spot patterns that may be masked by one-time funding sources, such as PPP loans or emergency grants. Through clear charts, concise presentations, and a focus on only the most critical data points, he empowers nonprofit leaders to make informed strategic decisions. The magic happens when finance, development, and program teams work in sync, breaking down silos and aligning around a shared financial story. “Finance isn't just about numbers—it's about customer service within an organization,” Neil emphasizes. His approach transforms finance from a back-office function into a powerful tool for mission success.Want to shift how your organization communicates financial data? Tarry any length of time with evangelical and Reformed Christians, and one is likely to hear the name of Martyn Lloyd-Jones. ‘The Doctor' as he was affectionately known, had a ministry that was used by God in a quite unique way in the mid to late twentieth century. This week's articles provide a stimulus to engage with Lloyd-Jones through two distinct types of media: his letters and his books. Jeremy Brooks highlights the value of the volume of Letters published by the Banner in 1994 for our understanding of the Doctor, and Iain H. Murray offers a guide to Lloyd-Jones' book output, with suggestions as to which volumes readers ought to prioritise. Whether you've benefitted from Lloyd-Jones for years, or have just discovered him, these articles will provide valuable insights and encouragement to read the work of a wonderful servant of Christ.   Featured Articles: – 'Revisiting Lloyd-Jones' Letters', Jeremy Brooks, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 736 (January 2025). – 'Advice on Reading Dr Lloyd-Jones', Iain H. Since those dates, the life of Dr Lloyd-Jones has been the subject of comment and assessment in many publications and these have been taken into account. Have Markets Hit Peak Optimism?

Thoughts on the Market

Our Head of Corporate Credit Research Andrew Sheets argues that while investor hopes are running high, corporate confidence isn't.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Sheets, Head of Corporate Credit Research at Morgan Stanley. Today I'm going to talk about optimism, how we measure it, whether it's overly excessive and what lies ahead. It's Friday January 24th at 2pm in London. A central tenet of investing, including credit investing, is to be on the lookout for excessive optimism. By definition, the highest prices in a market cycle will happen when people are the most convinced that only great things lie ahead. The lowest prices, when you'd love to buy, happen when investors have given up all hope. But identifying peak optimism, in real time, is tricky. It's tricky because there is no generally agreed definition; and it's tricky because, sometimes, things just are good. Investors have been excited about the US Technology sector for more than a decade now. And yet this sector has managed to deliver extraordinary profit growth over this time – and extraordinarily good returns. Yet this debate does feel relevant. The US equity market has soared over 50 per cent in the last two years. Equity valuations are historically high, both outright and relative to bonds. Credit risk premiums are near 20-year lows. Speculative investor activity is increasing. And so, have we finally hit peak optimism, a level from which we can go no further? Our answer, for better or worse, is no. While we think investor optimism is elevated, corporate optimism is not. And corporations are really important in this debate, enjoying enormous financial resources that can invest in the economy or other companies. While we do think corporate confidence will pick up, it is going to take some time. One of our favorite measures of corporate confidence is merger and acquisition activity. Buying another company is one of the riskiest things management can do, making it a great proxy for underlying corporate confidence. Volumes of this type of activity rose about 25 per cent last year, but they are still well below historical averages. And it would be really unusual for a major market cycle to end without this sort of activity being above-trend. Another metric is the riskiness of new borrowing. Taking on new debt is another measure of corporate confidence, as you generally do something like this when you feel good about the future, and your ability to pay that debt off. But for the last three years the volume of low-rated debt in the US market has actually been shrinking, while the issuance of the riskiest grades of corporate borrowing is also down significantly from the 2017-2022 average. Again, these are not the types of trends you'd expect with excessive corporate optimism. Uncertainties around tariffs, or the policies from the new US administration could still hold corporate confidence back. But the low starting point for corporate confidence, combined with what we expect to be a deregulatory push, mean we think it is more likely that corporate activity and aggressiveness have room to rise – and that this continues throughout 2025. Such an increase usually does present greater risk down the line; but for now, we think it is too early to position for those more negative consequences of increasing corporate aggression. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, leave us a review wherever you listen and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.
