Hosted on Acast. So thrilled to have Toronto Maple Leafs legend Mats Sundin join us this week. Mats is an 18 year National Hockey League Veteran and in 1989, was the first European to be selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft. Sundin is best known as a Toronto Maple Leaf where he was Team Captain for 11 years and is the current Leaf's franchise record holder for most goals and most points. He finished his career with a “point-per-game” pace scoring 1,349 points in 1,346 games and is the only Swedish-born player to score 500 goals in the National Hockey League. He won three gold medals at the IIHF World Championship and was the Captain of Team Sweden when they captured the 2006 Olympic Gold Medal in 2012 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming only the second Swede behind the legendary Börje Salming to be indicted at that time, and in 2017 was named one of the “top 100 players in NHL history” Sundin's his latest accomplishment ??? He has just become a best-selling Author with his book “Home and Away” published by Simon and Schuster!! Enjoy the interview! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There are a lot of ups and downs this week. First up, a long discussion about the five players from the 2018 Canadian World Juniors team who are being charged with sexual assault. Then, a fantastic discussion with ESPN's Greg Wyshynski about the changes in sports media over the course of his career. Finally, the crew remembers one guy which turns into both remembering a lot of guys and looking forward to an exciting new wave of womens' hockey.0:00 Our first segment tonight involves a discussion of sexual assault. Although it does not go in-depth into the incident in question. there is some discussion of the details and they are mentioned in several places in the segment. If you need to skip that segment, please head straight to the second segment at 32:42. 0:36 Benjamin welcomes Trevor and John to the Neutral Zone Hotel. 1:59 The crew gets straight into discussing the five players from the 2018 Canada World Juniors team charged with sexually assaulting a woman after a gala the summer after the tournament. The discussion includes the latest updates in the case, the poor manner in which the NHL has handled some previous cases, and the opportunity the league, Hockey Canada, and the sport have to handle these incidents better and hold players accountable. 32:42 Next up, a much lighter segment. Benjamin and John had a conversation with ESPN's Greg Wyshynski about the changing landscape of sports media from newspapers to blogs to podcasts to AI. 58:35 Finally, in our third segment, the crew talks about the lasting impact of Börje Salming on hockey. Without Salming, arguably we wouldn't have had the great influx of Europeans in the NHL in the 1980s and '90s. The crew talks about how much better the NHL is with European players. Next, the guys look at what's next for Vancouver after this road recent road trip, how Erik Källgren bought the Leafs some time, and reflect on Börje Salming's lasting impact (12:57). Hockey Hall of Famer Börje Salming received an emotional ovation at the Toronto Maple Leafs game on Saturday, as the Leafs legend battles ALS. Salming's impact as one of the first Swedish-born NHL players paved the way for his fellow countrymen to have their moment as well. Henrik and Daniel Sedin's speeches from last night, and their unique careers are discussed as the guys talk what the bar is for a Hall of Famer. Roberto Luongo's Italian-Canadian upbringing has Ray remembering his NHL journey, and the comforts of home, like freshly ironed boxers! Headlines includes the St. Louis Blues capturing a MUCH needed victory over the defending cup champion, Colorado Avalanche. If a struggling Blues team can use this as a springboard to save their season, and decisions ahead for GM Doug Armstrong if they don't. Jake Muzzin's - perhaps permanent - absence causes concern for the player's well-being, and also for an already questionable Toronto Maple Leafs blue-line. Plus, could changes be coming as soon as this week for the Vancouver Canucks?? According to Dregs, Bruce Boudreau's position behind the Canucks bench could be vacant any day now. Betano's Kris Abbott was absent as he's galavanting in Greece; he'll be saying ‘Opa!' when he hears the guys praise his NHL bets. However, it was another team ‘L' on NFL picks as Aaron Rodgers heard the pod picked the Cowboys, and promptly got his groove back. Stanley Cup odds are discussed, rough starts for the St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins have the guys eyeing if those teams rebounding could result in an improbable cup run. Ask R+D continues the Swedish trend this week as a listener from Jämtland asks about ‘decriminalizing' the offside rule, and sparks another idea of a ‘grey area' for the coach's challenge. Plus, the Winnipeg Jets surprise resurgence under Head Coach Rick Bowness - coincidentally Alfie's first NHL coach - and the brick wall that is Connor Hellebuyck. Support Dregs and his dusty ‘Mo!
