In part four of our series on Franz Liszt, we witness the rise of a music superstar the likes of which the world had never seen before, and what history would come to call "Lisztomania". But what made this superstar piano-player so special, and what caused such a stir in his fanbase? This wouldn't be the only point of pride during this phase of his life however, as he would soon invent a new form of music known as the Symphonic Poem, and help create the foundations for what we now consider pop music. But how was his love life going? What was happening with his children? Tune in for part four of Franz Liszt to find out! (Ep. 033)

You may not recognize the composer or piece, but this is a work that deserves your attention! John Banther and Evan Keely explore the poem and how it comes to life in the music, which operatic composer she's invoking, and why sea monsters have such short musical motifs.Support Classical Breakdown: https://weta.org/donatefmSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brook LeVan is the co-founder and executive director of Sustainable Settings, an entrepreneurial non-profit organization that inspires people and communities to embrace integrated solutions for sustainable development. Sustainable Settings owns and operates a 244-acre working ranch and Whole Systems Learning Center in Carbondale, Colorado.Brook has an impressive and varied background as an artist, Fulbright Scholar, university faculty member and world traveler. He's a certified Permaculture designer and has consulted, practiced and taught sustainable design, green building, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, wetland creation and art and design. I first met Brook last summer, when I was taking a permaculture design course held at Sustainable Settings. While I loved the permaculture training and learned a ton of useful information, my mind really exploded when Brook gave us an introduction to biodynamic agriculture, first introduced by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s. I was so inspired and intrigued by this approach of working with cosmic and spiritual forces to heal and regenerate the land that I returned to Sustainable Settings for a biodynamic preparation-making workshop in September. While Brook considers himself to be a “master of nothing,” I think of him as a master alchemist, regenerative wizard and pioneer. We had a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation, covering:* Brook's transition from artist in the art world to artist of the land;* Art as a mechanism for social change and personal evolution, and art and life as one;* Unsubscribing from the Western paradigm and opening to an indigenous worldview;* Using the physical to ask the metaphysical questions – and the ritual potential in all activities;* Moving beyond the “compaction between our ears” and opening to the recognition that everything is alive and speaking to us;* The ancient and new frontier of “vertical” agriculture – taking into account cosmic forces;* How to reestablish holy order and intimacy as stewards of the earth;* The importance of nutrient density on the spiritual and etheric levels;* And much more!Find out more about Brook's work and biodynamic agriculture:Sustainable SettingsBuild Soil or DieBiodynamic SourceBiodynamic BotanicalsEnzo Nastati's YouTube channel, and his teaching on The 13 Holy Nights (in Italian but translated into English)Find out about Emily's astrology readings and online classes: EmbodiedAquarian.com This is a public episode. It’s more than an overture, it breaks the rules of a symphony, and can have musical depictions to the extreme. The Symphonic Poem was popular in the mid-1800s to the 1930s and brought to life in grand romantic gestures, the world around us. In this episode, we talk about its humble origins to the master of the genre, Richard Strauss, and it’s eventual decline in popularity.

Franz Liszt composed twelve “symphonic poems,” of which “Les Préludes” has proven to be the most popular. Its structure is deceptively simple, based loosely on sonata form but differing from the classical sonata in its development of a few basic themes, rather than contrasting very different thematic material in distinct movements. The attractiveness of the piece lies in Liszt’s ingenious transitions and transformations as the music moves from episode to episode, by turns turbulent and serene, until the various strands finally come together in the dramatic finale. Explaining the title “Les Préludes,” Liszt posed the question, “What else is life but a series of preludes to that unknown hymn, the first and solemn note of which is intoned by Death?” Series: "La Jolla Symphony & Chorus" [Arts and Music] [Show ID: 33849]
