In the final sections of the masterpiece, Handel leads everything to a climax with the soprano solo voice, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" followed by the whole choir resounding with an anthem of praise echoing the choirs of heaven. Amen! Amen! Amen! The victory won by the Messiah means that death has been disarmed of its main threat - that of permanently isolating the human being from God's presence for ever. This is pretty important stuff and while Handel has our attention he makes sure he gives us the full message! 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 All musical samples are taken from: Messiah by Handel; Jennifer Vyvyan; Norma Procter; George Maran; Owen Brannigan; London Philharmonic Choir; London Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Adrian Boult London Records (XLLA-19) Contributor Internet Archive
Through the mouth of a gorgeous soprano soloist, Handel courageously grapples with the huge questions of death, bodily decomposition and resurrection. He takes the fashionable music-loving social elite on a thorough theological examination. The most famous and instantly recognisable part of the whole Messiah - the Hallelujah Chorus. In many ways this is the defining moment in the Oratorio. We join the combined voices of every creature in heaven and earth worshipping God and the Messiah, the Lamb of God. We glimpse the great moment which will be the culmination of the great story of God and people, the Wedding Supper of the Lamb. Revelation 19:6, Revelation 11:15, Revelation 19:16 All musical samples are taken from: Messiah by Handel; Jennifer Vyvyan; Norma Procter; George Maran; Owen Brannigan; London Philharmonic Choir; London Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Adrian Boult London Records (XLLA-19) Contributor Internet Archive
In a world saturated with a non-stop flood of breaking news, current affairs and 24 hour global reportage it is easy to see world leaders as supersized characters competing like Titans on a huge stage. We clearly do see the effect of one nation's actions as it directly impacts our lives, but in this section Handel gives us a glimpse of another reality. Including something which God seems to find very amusing. The scene changes dramatically from the suffering, despised and rejected Messiah, to the glorious conquering hero King. We see Jesus conquering the final enemy that faces each human being: Death. The human race has wandered away from the Shepherd and the Messiah will play the price to bring them back. All of the physical suffering of the Messiah is compounded by the staggering burden upon his shoulders, taking it far beyond that suffered by any other. Isaiah 53:6, Psalm 22:7,8, Psalm 69:20, Lamentations 1:12, Isaiah 53:8, Psalm 16:10 All musical samples are taken from Messiah by Handel; Jennifer Vyvyan; Norma Procter; George Maran; Owen Brannigan; London Philharmonic Choir; London Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Adrian Boult London Records (XLLA-19) Contributor Internet Archive
Part 2 of the Messiah leads with a significant plot twist - the shepherd who carried the lambs is now a Lamb. John the Baptist's words, "Behold the Lamb of God" set the tone for a more profoundly human and personal insight to the Messiah. This is a man familiar with suffering; the Saviour who takes the weight of sin and sorrow upon himself. This is one not to miss. Handel uses a classic test as to the authenticity of the Messiah, taken from Isaiah 35:5,6 - the blind are made able to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk and the mute to speak - all witnessed in Jesus by the gospel writers. This leads into the exquisitely tender, "he shall feed his flock like a shepherd" From Isaiah 40;11. Rejoice Greatly: Handel Advent Chamber Orchestra. Soprano Soloist, Cristina Piccardi. Sleeping out under the stars a safe distance from civilised society, a cluster of shepherds are treated to a show like no other. They witness a one time in history display of heaven opened, and the sky filled with an angelic chorus who just cannot keep silent any longer! But why shepherds? Into a land of gross darkness, where God's people have gone far from him and are now consulting mediums and necromancers to find direction in life, God shines his light. He shines it specifically into the unpromising region of Galilee. Isaiah correctly identifies the epicentre of this event of global significance seven centuries before the Messiah is born. Also, Handel does a great job with the music! A wicked king is promised a sign from God that surely raised a few eyebrows: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son..." This prophecy was delivered seven centuries before Mary received her angelic message which launched what we now know as the Christmas story. The work opens with the sombre, moving but measured Overture. Part 1 begins with the Tenor: "Comfort ye". These are the words of the prophet Isaiah addressing the inhabitants of Jerusalem some 700 years before the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah. In this episode we see how often biblical prophecies have layers of meaning which speak to the contemporary listener, but also to successive generations. This is a tender, soulful opening to the Messiah which still speaks to an audience today. In this series we delve into the riches of the scripture texts which form the words, unearthing ancient prophecies which still speak powerfully today. Hamburg's new General Music Director, Omer Meir Wellber, recently began his five-year tenure of the 2025/26 opera and symphony seasons with the Philharmonic State Orchestra at the striking Elbphilharmonie. The season's unique programs focus on a very special kind of dialogue between the present and the past under the motto “no risk, no fun”. In this episode, Omer will explain that and more. Suffice it to say, Omer unveiled his unusual idea of “over-writing” single movements of great works by international composers, to be repeated in all concerts this season. Omer regularly conducts the Orchestre National de France, the Gewand-haus-orchester Leipzig, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Deutsche Kammer-philharmonie Bremen and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He is also the author of, “Die Angst, das Risiko und die Liebe – Momente mit Mozart” – his first book, published in spring 2017. In it, he shares his personal understanding of the universal emotions addressed in the three Mozart/Da Ponte operas – Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, establishing him as a great voice of classical music.

In this episode of The Writing Life, poets Erica Hesketh and Jenny Pagdin share insights into the poetry of motherhood, and how they each share their ‘emotional truth' in their writing. Erica Hesketh is a poet and editor, originally from Japan and Denmark, now based in London. Her poetry has been commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall, Spread the Word and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016 to 2024 she was Director of the Poetry Translation Centre. Her debut collection, In the Lily Room, is published by Nine Arches Press and explores early motherhood. Her poem ‘Night feed' was highly commended in the 2025 Forward Prizes. Jenny Pagdin wrote The Snow Globe (Nine Arches 2024) and Caldbeck (Eyewear, 2017), about postpartum psychosis. The Snow Globe won the East Anglian Book Awards poetry category in 2024, and her work has been shortlisted for the Mslexia pamphlet competition, highly commended and shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and longlisted for the Rebecca Swift Foundation's 2018 Women's Poetry Prize. Together, they reflect on how their experiences of motherhood have shaped their poetry and the creation of their debut collections. Touching on everything from how poetry fits into their lives as working mothers to the power of connecting with others by giving voice to experiences of illness and mental health, this is an honest and insightful conversation about recovery, language, and craft.
Do you ever feel like your life lacks significance? Like you're just a small note in a grand symphony that no one would notice if it went missing? Today's episode challenges that notion with a powerful story about a piccolo player in Michael Costa's London Philharmonic Orchestra who thought his contribution didn't matter—until the moment he stopped playing and the renowned conductor immediately halted everything, asking "Where's the piccolo?"This compelling story perfectly illustrates the biblical truth found in 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul explains how every part of the body has essential significance, regardless of its size or visibility. Just as a body needs each unique part to function properly, God's plan requires each one of us playing our distinct roles. Your life matters enormously, even when you can't see its impact. God has strategically positioned you to influence others in ways only you can. Whether you're feeling overlooked or questioning your purpose, remember: the Conductor notices when your unique note is missing from the symphony. Join me every weekday morning to start your day with encouragement and perspective that helps you recognize your true significance in God's orchestra. We would love to hear your comments. Simon Reeve is a broadcaster and writer best known for his TV documentaries which combine travel and adventure with investigations into the challenges faced by the places he visits. His journeys have taken him across jungles, deserts, mountains and oceans, and to some of the most dangerous and remote regions of the world. He's dodged bullets on frontlines, dived with seals and sharks, survived malaria, walked through minefields and tracked lions on foot.Simon grew up in Acton in west London. He experienced anxiety and depression as a teenager and left school with few qualifications. He eventually found a job in the post room at the Sunday Times and from there progressed to working with the news teams, filing stories on a range of subjects from organised crime to nuclear smuggling. In the late 1990s he wrote one of the first books about Al-Qaeda and its links to Osama Bin Laden. His expertise in this area was quickly called upon after the 9/11 attacks in the USA, and he became a regular guest on American television and radio programmes. The current pandemic put Simon's overseas trips into abeyance and he has turned his attention to the UK, recently making programmes about Cornwall and the Lake District.
In early 1942 Norman Corwin began a unique show over all four major radio networks. It was a thirteen episode, non-commercial broadcast called This is War, bringing together the best talent and resources of the broadcast and entertainment industry, like actor Joe Julian. That summer, Corwin went to England to produce a series helping to improve relations between the English and Americans, which were, surprisingly, strained. People like aviation legend Charles Lindbergh were anticommunism, but pro-isolationism and pro-eugenics. All three views were supported by the Nazi party. President Roosevelt was deeply angry at Lindbergh's opposition to his administration's interventionist policies. He told Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau in 1941, "If I should die tomorrow, I want you to know this, I am absolutely convinced Lindbergh is a Nazi." Linbergh publicly denounced anti-semitism in 1941, but many people remained anti-anglo throughout the country, with some even citing the American Revolution and the War of 1812 as reasons. Called An American In England, it was a joint effort from BBC and U.S. broadcasters. Edward R. Murrow would produce. The entire available London Philharmonic Orchestra would be used. The series would be sent back to the states by short-wave. Because it was to be heard live at 10PM for Eastern War time, that meant it was broadcast overnight in England. The result was a limited-release series considered to be among the most important works Corwin ever produced.

Schele Williams has never been afraid to immerse herself in the thing that she loves in order to achieve what she wants. She reflects on her journey, the motivations and support from her family, and the significance of storytelling in her life, which has led her to where she is today. She shares how she chooses which projects to work on, given her busy schedule, her creative process, and making sure to foster a sense of involvement and connection with her children in whatever she does. She also emphasizes the importance of building relationships throughout her career and creating a supportive network. While she's accomplished so many things already, Schele opens up about dealing with imposter syndrome, particularly when transitioning to new roles, and how she overcame it. Currently co-directing “The Notebook”, Schele explains the conscious choice to diversify the casting in the show, which aims to make the story more inclusive and relatable to a broader audience. We also dive into her excitement about directing “The Wiz”, its impactful storytelling, how it celebrates blackness, friendship, and courage, and the joy of seeing children in the audience. Schele Williams is a Broadway director who was originally pursuing her dreams of playing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as a teenager. She eventually became an actor with credits, including both “RENT” and “Aida” on Broadway, leading her to become dance captain for “RENT” on Broadway and an associate choreographer for the tour. She uncovered her true calling to being a director. She associate-directed “Motown the Musical” on Broadway, and is currently working on a stage adaptation of “Hidden Figures”. She is also co-directing “The Notebook” alongside Michael Greif, which just opened on Broadway, and is also solo directing the incoming extremely highly-anticipated production of “The Wiz”, scheduled to open on April 17th at the Marquis Theater–the first black woman to direct a Broadway musical in over 50 years.
