In this second part of our Hear the Dance journey into Jerome Robbins' A Suite of Dances, Cellist Hannah Holman joins host Silas Farley to provide a deep-dive introduction to the Bach Cello Suites that provide the ballet's exquisite score. As Holman explains, the music is a seminal work for every cellist, with complex challenges and varied delights throughout—all of which are complicated and enriched when performed onstage with the work's solo dancer. Are you ready for non-stop shenanigans? Good! Not only does that describe the incroyable French film we are discussing this week, but it is what the original title loosely translates to. How about that? Wade, Amanda, and our good friend Naomi Krajewski talk about Jean-Pierre Jeunet's uncanny ability to make the most of every moment and camera movement, the comedic genius of Dominique Pinon (no news there), and the heartwarming found-family dynamic portrayed in this brilliant film. This movie is funny, and poignant, and intelligently satirical, and timely. Watch it! You won't regret it. Adam Kay is a writer whose memoir This is Going to Hurt; Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor won the Book of the Year prize at the National Book Awards and has sold over three million copies. It was adapted for television as a BBC series that won four BAFTAs this year, including Adam's award for best drama writer. Adam was born in Brighton in 1980 and studied medicine at Imperial College London. In 2004 he started working as a junior doctor, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 2010 he left medicine following a catastrophic incident in surgery. He had kept a diary throughout his medical career, partly to help cope with the long shifts and stressful environment that came with life as a hospital doctor. In 2016 Adam read from his diaries for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the positive reception he received from audiences encouraged him to use them as the basis for a memoir. The book became a publishing sensation, and Adam has published further books and enjoyed considerable success with his live performances. Adam lives in Oxfordshire with his husband James. Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
We consider the history and explosive politics of the often-forgotten Eastern European nation that set the events of the First World War in motion: Serbia. We examine the country's emergence and brief flowering as an Eastern Orthodox kingdom in the high Middle Ages, its fall to the Ottoman advance, its many years of quiet resistance in religion and song, its re-emergence amidst the Napoleonic wars and the Ottoman breakdown, and finally, its long-frustrated quest to fulfill its purported destiny of reunifying the Southern Slavs, which led a militant and conspiratorial secret society to murder their own country's king and to smuggle teenage assassins across the border to kill their rivals' crown prince. The first four works date from the 1950s - all short-lived and more popular. Already in 1970, the two great cycles: the 12 Studies, which involve transcendental technique with Brazilian rhythms and urban and regional popular music; and the 12 Brazilian Waltzes in the Form of Studies, all in minor keys, with a darker sound and nocturnal character, with melodies reminiscent of serenades. His cycle of original works for the instrument ends with Batuque in 1980 when the composer honors the classical-popular piano of Brazilian virtuoso Ernesto Nazareth.Tracklist1. Modinha (1:52)2. Richard E Grant was born in Swaziland, now Eswatini, one of the smallest countries in Africa, and took his first steps as an actor as a teenager in the local amateur theatre company. He studied Drama and English at Cape Town University in South Africa, and moved to London in 1982, hoping to find work as an actor, with - in his words - 'nothing more than a couple of suitcases, a boxful of music cassettes and blind ambition.' He worked as a waiter to pay the bills, until his very first film role, in Withnail and I, launched his acting career. Since then, he has appeared in a very wide range of films, with roles in How to Get Ahead in Advertising, The Player, Jack and Sarah, Logan and Everybody's Talking About Jamie, as well as the Star Wars series. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2019 for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Richard has been a lifelong diarist and has published three collections of memoirs. His most recent book chronicles his long and happy marriage to his wife, the dialect coach Joan Washington, who died from cancer in 2021.
