The Pharisee and The Tax CollectorExploring Jesus' parables about the Kingdom of God.
Who was Zaccheus? Was he saved? Do we have the same responsibility to increase God's Kingdom?
As Luke records the crowds continuing to grow and the Pharisees increasingly suspicious, he also records Jesus's recognition of certain individuals whom he called to be his disciples. We have seen Jesus's call of Peter who was cleaning his nets, in this weeks passage we look at Jesus's call of Levi who sat at his tax booth.
1. Pray without losing heart. (v.1-8) 2. Pray without pride. (v.9-14)
Note: The first part of the sermon was lost as part of a recording error.
This Sunday we turn to the Gospel of Luke. Of all the parables Jesus told, the pharisee and the tax collector humbles us the most. In it, Jesus testifies to the church that spiritual accolades and religious disciple cannot earn one's place in the kingdom, especially when they flow from a heart of arrogance and disdain toward others. Instead of trusting in oneself, God calls us to trust in one outside of ourselves, namely Jesus Christ, who did not come to call the righteous, but the unrighteous.
Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
1. The belief of many in the crowd A. They trusted in themselves B. They compared themselves with others C. They despised others 2. The Pharisee goes to the Temple A. Stood tall and prominent ` B. Prayed to himself C. Prayed about himself 3. The Pharisee's prayer A. Thank you, I'm not a sinner B. I fast twice a week C. I tithe on everything 4. The Tax collector's prayer A. He stood far off B. He bowed his head C. He was mournful D. He asked for mercy 5. Not all prayer is the same A. God sees the heart B. God hears the humble

Lack of self-awareness-you've seen it in others, and perhaps you've got some blind spots yourself. But, there's one area of life that we can't afford to lack self-awareness. Today, Jesus shows us the stark contrast between two types of people seeking God's acceptance in two different ways. Come, let's learn from God's word this morning!

Do you ever struggle with performance or comparing yourself with others? In this message, Blake Holmes will help us to look at the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector. This parable is ultimately a story about Jesus warning us against the spiritual pride in all of us and how it blinds us from the truth.

Sunday - Micah Gingerich - The Pharisee and the Tax Collector - Luke 18
Today we are comparing the Pharisees (along with some Priests and Rich folks) to true Disciples (even an outside looking in Gentile woman). The Gospels, and Jesus Himself, demand that we come face to face with the difference and choose who we want to be. In today's episode we look at several stories I'll note and reference here:Pharisees and Tax Collector - Luke 18:9-14The Good Samaritan - Luke 10:30-37The Widow's Mites - Luke 21:1-4Simon and the Sinful Woman - Luke 7:36-50Pharisee and the Gentile Woman - Mark 7:1-30As you read and hear about these stories, ask yourself:- Do I approach Christ and worship more like the Pharisee or the tax man?- Am I more like the Priest or the Samaritan when I see people in need?- Do I submit all of my goods to God's cause or just out of my surplus?- Would I wash Jesus feet with my tear and hair or sit proudly at the table?- Do we set aside love of others for our views or let love for all reign?
Besides being a wee little man, what else is known about Zacchaeus the tax collector who climbed a tree to see Jesus. He literally went out on a limb. Not being a popular figure in town, Zacchaeus ran the chance of ridicule from his fellow citizens. Makes you wonder, do we have that same nerve. To literally go out on a limb to see the Messiah. Melissa shared The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14) in it's original form and as it might play out right here at Raleigh Mennonite. This version as acted out had a Bishop, a philanthropist, an activist and a payday lender. The first 3 were smug in there righteousness and celebrated that they were "not like the payday lender" who wept and exclaimed "God have mercy on me a sinner". Jesus said, I tell you, this man went down to his home to justify rather than others, who, for all who exalt themselves. You can't do anything to earn God's love, and nothing you could ever do could turn it away from you. It's a gift with no strings attached

Inward change leads to outward action -- but it all starts in the heart mixed with a bit of curiosity and determination. A small seed planted there that desires peace, joy, and to experience the promises of God first hand. The story of Zacchaeus the Tax Collector (Luke 19:1-10) illustrates when curiosity meets determination how your life can be changed in a powerful way. He climbed a Sycamore tree so he could just see Jesus passing by from a distance, but Jesus had other plans: An Encounter with God. What "tree" are we willing to climb to have an encounter with God? Jeremiah 29:13 tells us that when we seek God with all our heart, we will find Him. Zacchaeus did just that and shows us that Curiosity + Determination = Encounter with God. Join Catherine, Gina and Kristen as they examine how when our curiosity about Jesus is paired with our determination, we will find the truth we seek.
