Have you had news you just had to share? Maybe you called a friend or told the next person you saw! Often, news we share has to do with something we really wanted, something we were hoping for, or something really good that happened. But how often is our salvation from sin the focus of our exciting news? In Psalm 107, the psalmist calls the reader to give thanks to the Lord for His steadfast love.

Peter Adam - Psalm 100 calls us to a life of joyful prayerfulness: 'I will give thanks… I will praise…' It is a psalm of thanksgiving that urges all the earth to make a joyful noise to the Lord, to serve him with gladness, and to come into his presence with singing. We thank and praise God because he made us, we are his people, and he is our good and faithful Shepherd. His steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness continues to all generations. In Jesus Christ, all God's promises find their 'Yes'. As we pray, we respond with thanksgiving, praise, and confidence, knowing that one day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Welcome to Episode 097 veteran drummer and percussionist JOHN SPEICE, prominently based in the Austin scene. Best known for work with Grammy-winning Latin ensemble Grupo Fantasma and its psychedelic-funk offshoot Brownout, including their beloved Black Sabbath-inspired side trip Brown Sabbath. Throughout his career, Speice has been core to a diverse array of bands like Money Chicha, Hairy Apes BMX, and Caramelo Haze, also collaborating with Black Pumas, Daniel Johnston, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Trio Asesino, Jon Muq, among many others. I first saw John Speice electrify with a one-off version of Marco Benevento Trio at Megalomaniacs Ball 2011 in New Orleans over Jazz Fest. In addition to giving us the lowdown on the Apes reunion, we get the scoop on a half-dozen of his super-dope bands.  John breaks down a bit of basic history and the musical/cultural impact of classic and contemporary cumbia/chicha styles. He reflects on how they've been interpreted/expounded upon since breaking through stateside some years ago. A friend for a dozen years, this pod conversation is many moons in the making. This message reflects on David's time of suffering in the cave, showing how God works powerfully in seasons of darkness and distress, drawing from 1 Samuel 22 to illustrate that even when David was anointed yet not reigning, God was shaping him into a shepherd-king through hardship rather than comfort. Though hunted by Saul and surrounded by the broken, indebted, and discontented, David was not abandoned; instead, God used the cave as His refining place, much like a potter's wheel, preparing both David and those who gathered to him for future glory. The sermon parallels David's rejection with Christ's own suffering, pointing to the paradox of victory through defeat and calling believers to follow the rejected King, even outside the camp, as taught in Hebrews 13, and to offer their lives fully to God in response to His mercy, as urged in Romans 12. Ultimately, the message assures that those who suffer with Christ will also reign with Him, reminding listeners that caves are not the end of God's story but often the beginning of His greatest work You can connect with Moriel in more locations than just YouTube! Thank you for your partnership in expanding our Jewish programming! In this episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the second section of Hodu (recited after the afternoon Tamid offering, per some opinions), beginning with the call to "Sing to Hashem, all the earth; announce His salvation daily" (Tehillim 96:1–5). He emphasizes declaring Hashem's greatness and daily salvation to the nations—reminding the world that Hashem is the authentic Creator of heaven and earth, not the false gods or natural forces idolized by others. The verses contrast elilim (nothingness/false gods) with Hashem's true dominion: "For all the gods of the peoples are nothing, but Hashem made the heavens."Rabbi Wolbe highlights the urgency of daily recognition ("basru miyom el yom yeshu'ato" – announce His salvation daily), as forgetting Hashem's gifts happens quickly—hence the rabbinic requirement of 100 berachot daily (roughly every 7–8 minutes of wakefulness). He connects this to relationships (e.g., constantly reminding a spouse of love) and spiritual life: without regular praise and acknowledgment (starting with Modeh Ani), gratitude fades, leading to entitlement or doubt. Singing Hashem's praise elevates the soul, draws us closer to Him, and invites the nations to recognize His oneness and wonders—transforming personal gratitude into a global declaration of faith._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #45) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! HODU - 1 [Prayer: Pesukei Dezimra/Verses of Song #4]

In this Prayer Podcast episode on Hodu (the first section of Pesukei Dezimra), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains its structure, purpose, and deeper meaning. Hodu consists of 50 verses (from Chronicles and Psalms), divided into three parts, recited either before or after Baruch She'amar (depending on Ashkenaz/Sephard custom) to remove spiritual barriers (klipot) from the morning offerings and elevate prayer.Key points:Hodu = Give thanks — The prayer begins with a charge to declare Hashem's name and make His miracles known among the nations (“Hodiu ba'amim alilosaiv”). It's an expression of love for Hashem: when you truly love Him, you want to share that love with the world.Practical themes — Publicize Hashem's acts (not keep Judaism secret); take pride in His name (“Hisalu b'shem kodsho”); rejoice in seeking Him (“yismach leiv mevakshei Hashem”); constantly seek His presence and strength (“dirshu Hashem v'uzo, bakshu panav tamid”); remember His wonders, covenant, and chosen status of Israel (“zichru la'olam briso”).Spiritual power — Hodu removes klipot (negative spiritual forces) that block prayer after mentioning offerings. It's sung before the Ark in the Temple (twice daily); today it replaces offerings and connects us to the Temple service.Connection to daily life — Start the day with gratitude and awe: see Hashem's wonders in nature (sunrise, waves, wind, hurricanes, volcanoes), personal blessings, and creation. Share Hashem's greatness—don't hide Jewish identity; attribute success to Him (“kiru bishmo”).Broader message — Hodu inspires sharing Hashem with humanity, just as Abraham did. It's the opening song of Pesukei Dezimra—sing praise, not just recite words. The rabbi emphasizes joyful, intentional prayer: Hodu is about declaring Hashem's sovereignty, remembering the covenant, and rejoicing in seeking Him—turning morning prayer into song and testimony._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #45) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg!
