In this powerful episode, we sit down with Valeria Feliciano, a proud Puerto Rican filmmaker, model, and storyteller, whose mission is to dismantle stereotypes and elevate the voices of Latinas in media. Valeria opens up about the struggles she faced embracing her natural curls in an industry that often celebrates narrow beauty standards. She recounts the emotional moment when a young woman of color told her, “You are the reason I participated,” and how that became a life-changing affirmation of her purpose. From rejecting roles that reduce Latinas to stereotypes to celebrating the beauty of bilingualism, Valeria challenges the status quo while inspiring others to own their identity unapologetically. As an immigrant Latina navigating entertainment, Valeria shares her journey of persistence from being overlooked to co-hosting an event with Vanilla Ice after a cold outreach. She speaks candidly about the importance of seeing Latinas as leaders, not just background characters, and how her upcoming podcast aims to spotlight the women who are breaking barriers behind the scenes. Valeria's leadership is rooted in authenticity, representation, and the power of visibility. Her story is a reminder that even when the world says no, your truth can still open doors for you and for those watching.

Aretha Franklin got her start at an early age in Gospel music. As the granddaughter of Gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher, Franklin was heard on her father's "gospel caravan" tours at the age of twelve. By the time she became an adult in 1960 she had decided that she wanted to go into more pop music, and moved to New York for this purpose. She signed a deal with Columbia Records, in 1960, but her career would not really take off until moving to Atlantic Records in 1966. By 1968 she was considered by many to be the most successful singer in the nation, and already crowned the "Queen of Soul."Franklin toured outside the US for the first time in late April 1968 through May 1968. She performed in Paris on May 7, 1968, and this concert would be released as the live album Aretha in Paris in the fall of 1968. It was Franklin's second live album, and the first for Atlantic Records where most of her hits were recorded. Some have criticized the backing band as not up to the task of supporting Franklin. However, this album captures Franklin at the top of her game at a time when she was cranking out some of the biggest hits of her career. It would be difficult for any supporting band to keep up, particularly one assembled for an overseas tour. Regardless, this is a great album to explore as a snapshot of Aretha Franklin at the height of success.Lynch brings us a high energy live soul album from the Queen of Soul in her prime for today's podcast. (I Can't Get No) SatisfactionThis Rolling Stones cover is the lead-off track to the album and to the concert. The Stones had released this song in 1965, and it had become their first number 1 song in the States. Franklin takes the tempo up for this cover.(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural WomanCarole King and Gerry Goffin wrote this song for Franklin based on an idea from producer Jerry Wexler. It originally appeared on Franklin's album "Lady Soul", and went to number 8 on the U.S. charts. It would make history when it hit the UK charts a week after Franklin's death in 2018, 51 years after the single was first released. (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been GoneThe original single for this live song was released on the "Lady Soul" album, and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was written by Franklin and her then-husband Teddy White. The studio version of this song utilized the talents of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who were flown in from Alabama to record in a New York City studio.Chain of FoolsSongwriter Don Covay wrote this song in his youth, and presented it to producer Jerry Wexler as a song for Otis Redding. Wexler decided to have Franklin record it instead of Redding. It was a big hit, taking the number 1 slot on the R&B charts for four weeks, number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and delivering Franklin a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy show “Laugh In”This sketch comedy show would capture a lot of American counter-culture of the time from Tiny Tim to "sock it to me!" STAFF PICKS:Ride My See Saw by the Moody BluesWayne kicks off the staff picks with a psychedelic song from the second Moody Blues album, "In Search of the Lost Chord." The song is about leaving school and finding that the world isn't what you thought it would be. On the album, the song is preceded by a spoken word introduction called "Departure."Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. RileyRob's staff pick is a storytelling song written by Tom T. Hall about a widow named Mrs. Johnson and her tangle with the PTA. When her teenage daughter received a note from the Harper Valley PTA criticizing the way she is living, Mrs. Johnson attends the next meeting and reveals some indiscretions of the other PTA members.Light My Fire by Jose FelicianoBruce features an acoustic cover of the Doors hit single with a Latin twist. Jose Feliciano is best known for the Christmas song "Feliz Navidad," but this Puerto Rican artist also had a hit with this cover that peaked at number 3 on in late summer 1968. His album "Feliciano!" is a selection of acoustic cover songs, and his most successful one. He won "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" at the 1969 Grammy Awards for this cover.Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty SpringfieldLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that writers John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins wrote with Aretha Franklin in mind. When Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler heard it, he thought it would be a good fit for Dusty Springfield who was recording her "Dusty in Memphis" album at the time. Feliciano v. Department of Transportation the Court was presented with the question of whether a federal civilian employee called or ordered to active duty under a provision of law during a national emergency is entitled to differential pay even if the duty is not directly connected to the national emergency. The Federal Circuit had initially held that Nick Feliciano, an air traffic controller with the FAA and reserve officer in the coast guard was not entitled to differential pay for parts of his time when he had been called to active duty during the early and mid-2010s. The Supreme Court heard oral argument on December 9, 2024, and on April 30, 2025 a 5-4 court reversed the decision below. Justice Gorsuch penned the majority opinion, and Justice Thomas wrote the dissent, which was joined by Justices Alito, Kagan, and Jackson. Join us for a Courthouse Steps Decision program where we break down and analyze the decision and the opinions, and discuss the potential ramifications of this case. Featuring: Prof. Gregory Dolin, Associate Professor of Law, University of Baltimore School of Law (Moderator) Craig E. Leen, Partner, K&L Gates, and Former OFCCP Director
In this case, the court considered this issue: Is a federal civilian employee called or ordered to active duty under a provision of law during a national emergency is entitled to differential pay even if the duty is not directly connected to the national emergency. The case was decided on April 30, 2025.Nick Feliciano, an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration and a Coast Guard reserve petty officer, was called to active duty in July 2012 under 10 U-S-C §12301(d). He served until February 2017, primarily escorting vessels to and from harbor. Despite his active-duty service, Feliciano did not receive differential pay, which compensates federal civilian employees for the pay gap between their civilian and military salaries when called to active duty during a national emergency.Feliciano sought relief from the Merit Systems Protection Board, claiming he was unlawfully denied differential pay. The Board rejected his claim, and Feliciano appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He argued that under 5 U-S-C §5538(a) and 10 U-S-C §101(a)(13)(B), he was entitled to differential pay because he was called to active duty under a provision of law during a national emergency. The Federal Circuit, referencing its decision in Adams v Department of Homeland Security, held that Feliciano needed to show a substantive connection between his service and a particular national emergency, which he failed to do.The Supreme Court of the United States reviewed the case and reversed the Federal Circuit's decision. The Court held that a federal civilian employee called to active duty under "any other provision of law . . . during a national emergency" is entitled to differential pay if the reservist's service coincides temporally with a declared national emergency. The Court determined that no substantive connection between the service and the national emergency is required. The case was remanded for further proceedings consistent with this interpretation. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted.

Send us a textThe New York Giants head into a crucial offseason with a massive salary cap increase that could give them the flexibility to reshape the roster. The NFL has informed teams that the cap will rise significantly, landing between $277.5 and $281.5 million. With this increase, the Giants currently hold around $45.1 million in available cap space, according to Spotrac. But that number could skyrocket past $85 million if they make expected moves, including cutting veterans like Nunez-Roches and restructuring key contracts. This level of financial freedom could position the Giants to be major players in free agency. As the Giants plan for their future, two of their stars have received well-deserved recognition. Dexter Lawrence and Malik Nabers both landed in PFF's Top 101 players list. Lawrence continues to be one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the league, finishing with top-three grades at his position and racking up nine sacks in 2024. Meanwhile, Nabers was not only the best rookie wide receiver in the league but also ranked among the NFL's top overall receivers with 1,204 yards, proving he is a cornerstone for the Giants' offense moving forward. Adding to the offseason buzz, PFF outlined a dream scenario for the Giants that includes signing veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs and drafting quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The idea of pairing Diggs with Malik Nabers would immediately elevate the Giants' passing attack, while Sanders' polished mechanics and strong passing foundation make him an intriguing potential franchise quarterback. ESPN's Jordan Raanan broke down what it might cost for the Giants to move up to the No. 1 pick, with a package including the third and 34th overall picks, plus possible additional Day 2 selections. The Giants also said goodbye to a former player as Jon Feliciano announced his retirement. Feliciano reflected on his time in New York, calling the team's playoff win over Minnesota his favorite moment. Meanwhile, the coaching staff takes a hit as running backs coach Joel Thomas departs to rejoin the New Orleans Saints under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. In a surprising turn, boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is reportedly leading a group looking to buy a 10% stake in the New York Giants. Mayweather, alongside real estate mogul Meyer Orbach, has reportedly secured $200 million in an escrow account as part of a larger $700 million proposal. If successful, this move could shake up the ownership landscape for the franchise. With major financial flexibility, potential blockbuster moves, and ownership intrigue, the Giants are setting up for a defining offseason. Drew and Rob break down all the latest developments and what they could mean for the future of the team in this episode of 2 Giants Goofballs: New York Giants News & Updates.#giants #nygiants #nflSupport the showAll Episodes are shot LIVE with fan interactions on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, & TwitchSponsor the show at: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballsInterested in starting a podcast. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Yadira Soto-Feliciano from MIT about her work on the Menin-MLL complex and the effect of small molecules on its stability in leukemia. We explore the pivotal moments that led her to cancer biology during her graduate studies, where her work included ground-breaking research on the role of the plant homeodomain Finger protein-6 (PHF-6) in leukemia. This work bridged the realms of chromatin accessibility, transcription factors, and cancer cell lineage, providing critical evidence for the concept of lineage plasticity in cancer biology—a topic that has gained significant traction in recent years. Dr. Soto-Feliciano discusses how advances in techniques like CRISPR and ChIP-sequencing have shaped her research, enabling deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying cancer cell identity. As our discussion transitions, Dr. Soto-Feliciano shares her experience in David Allis's lab, illustrating how the collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines enhanced her understanding of chromatin biology and generated significant insights into the mechanics of epigenetic regulation. Highlighting a recent 2023 publication, we unpack her findings related to the conserved molecular switch between MLL1 and MLL3 complexes. These discoveries revealed how the application of small-molecule inhibitors of the menin-MLL interaction can alter gene expression and affect leukemia cells' responses to treatments. We also touch on the operational dynamics within her lab at MIT, established during challenging times marked by the pandemic. Yadira is dedicated to fostering a collaborative and respectful environment among her team, comprised of PhD candidates and research technicians, all sharing a commitment to unraveling the complexities of chromatin regulation. She emphasizes the significance of understanding chromatin scaffold proteins and their role in regulating gene expression and genome organization. References Soto-Feliciano, Y. M., Bartlebaugh, J. M.
