The AI with Maribel Lopez (AI with ML)
Dell Technologies Chief AI Officer Shares Insight Delivering Successful AI Implementations

The AI with Maribel Lopez (AI with ML)

Episode Summary: In this episode, Maribel Lopez speaks with Dell's Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Officer John Roese about Dell's enterprise AI technologies from their development to their future. Roese explains how the initial magical thinking around artificial intelligence has shifted into a more practical approach that aims to maximize the benefits of each implementation. He also discusses the emerging trends and ideas that he is seeing in the AI space.Key Themes: Maribel and John start by delving into enterprise AI and AI markets in general. John explains the types of AI markets and how enterprise AI differs from other applications. The conversation then moves into the challenges of AI and the steps that Dell is taking to address them. Next, John and Maribel reflect on the near-universal reactive approach that companies took to AI two years ago and how parts of that approach backfired or fizzled out. While this technology could have been approached better, its widespread use has provided companies with a real world understanding of LLMs and their applications. Now, companies take a more practical approach to AI while continuing to innovate. The key innovation that Roese highlights is agentic architecture. This technology differs from previous generative AI applications because it can operate autonomously and is highly specialized. Individual “agents” can have job descriptions that they are trained for much like a human being, and they can interact with each other as a human team would. For detailed show notes, navigate the episode using the time stamps below:[1:26] Maribel introduces the guest of the episode, John Roese. Roese is the CTO and Chief AI Officer at Dell Technologies. [1:59] The AI market is not a singular market – there is a traditional market, a training market, and an enterprise market. The enterprise market is very pragmatic in its applications. [4:10] Maribel asks about the challenges businesses see in enterprise adoption. Early discussions of new AI technology treated it like magic. Now that we have real world use cases and a better understanding of the technology, Dell is able to have grounded conversations about AI applications with real impacts. [7:48] Roesch explains the challenges that Dell is facing with AI. One of the challenges was determining where to prioritize as a company. Another is the process by which you develop application ideas. Dell had this issue when bringing ideas that were not fully formed to their legal team. [11:44] No one got AI perfectly right. Almost universally, companies reacted at the technical level before looking at business priorities. Roese encourages companies to move toward a more thoughtful approach to AI technology.[13:36] Dell learned that its goal was to add in the minimum sufficient AI structure to address the maximum use cases. In Dell's case, half of their use cases were related to converting proprietary data into generative outcomes. Creating one model to handle all of these cases is the most efficient approach. [15:05] Maribel asks Roese about the trends Dell is seeing in AI. Roese points to the emergence of agentic architecture. The idea behind agentic architecture is that they are autonomously performing agents with very specialized purposes. They can be combined much like a team of human beings. Follow John Roese: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnroese/ Learn more about Dell's AI solutions: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/scc/sc/artificial-intelligence Follow Maribel Lopez on X/Twitter: https://x.com/maribellopez Subscribe to Maribel Lopez on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MaribelLopezResearch Follow Maribel Lopez on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/maribellopez/

Relationships are hard. In today's me-first world of instant gratification, cancel culture and no-fault divorce, it seems almost impossible to find a true love. Friendships fracture, families fight and romances fizzle. Is finding a love that lasts simply a figment of the imagination that is found is fairy-tales? Could it be that love is being looked for in the wrong places? Rather than looking outward to others for a love that endures, we need to learn to live out a love that lasts.

Ultimately, to choose the path of wisdom is to choose life, and to choose the path of folly is to choose death. In verse 10, Solomon reveals that the way to choose wisdom is to fear the Lord, which requires us to know his role and his character.

Join hosts Stan Wisseman and Rob Aragao as they engage with Martin Roesch, CEO of Netography and creator of Snort. With over 25 years in cybersecurity, Martin discusses network security evolution, especially in network observability. He explains the shift from traditional deep packet inspection (DPI) to leveraging metadata for network analysis due to the rise of encryption and dispersed networks. This metadata approach offers a broader view of network activities, overcoming DPI limitations. The conversation explores the complexities of maintaining security across different environments and the inefficiencies of disparate security tools for on-premises IT, AWS, Azure, and OT environments. Martin stresses the need for a unified security strategy adaptable to modern network architectures. He highlights metadata-based analysis for effectively detecting anomalies and reducing false positives, offering a clearer network activity picture.Martin also addresses the challenge of tracking lateral movement within and across cloud environments. Current security tools often fail to monitor these movements in real time, complicating threat response. Adopting a metadata-centric approach enhances understanding and mitigation of lateral movements, bolstering security posture.Rob Aragao further asks about emerging threats and key technologies in multi-cloud security. Martin emphasizes the promise of data security over identity as a perimeter and the need for unified, frictionless toolsets in multi-cloud environments to reduce operational friction. As enterprise networks expand, these low-friction architectures are vital for scalable, efficient security solutions, presenting opportunities for companies providing seamless multi-cloud capabilities.Tune in to gain deeper insights into the current and future state of network security from a leading expert.Follow or subscribe to the show on your preferred podcast platform.Share the show with others in the cybersecurity world.Get in touch via reimaginingcyber@gmail.com

In this episode, we sit down with Marty Roesch, founder of Sourcefire. Sourcefire led the intrusion detection and protection (IDS/IPS) wave, raised four rounds of financing from leading VCs like NEA, Sierra Ventures, and Sequoia, and went public, later to be acquired by Cisco for $2.7 billion.Founders often believe that their first few customers cannot be large enterprises. Marty took the contrarian path. Sourcefire's first few customers were all six-figure deals - PWC, Intel, SAIC, and International Paper. In addition to that, Sourcefire was incredibly successful in working with industry research firms like Gartner and organizations like SANS in developing a new category. In this podcast, Marty shares what happened behind the scenes and provides founders with advice on how to work with enterprises and gain the interest of industry analysts.Almost two decades after starting Sourcefire, Marty has gone back full circle to being the CEO of Netography, a network security startup. Marty shares stories from both his Sourcefire and Netography journeys, discusses how he navigated the M&A landscape and explains where we should be excited about AI in security, and where it's wise to be cautious.

Hello, my name is Margaret Roesch and I have been lucky enough to share the past 27 years with my wife, Pat McAulay. Pat moved to Durham from Flint, MI and I am a transplant from West Lafayette, IN. We met in Durham and chose to create our 55+, LGBTQ+, cohousing community here in Durham, a very Gay-friendly city in the liberal part of NC called The Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill). Our condo-style homes on 5 of our 15 acres in N. Durham consist of 28 individual 1-story homes. The homes are connected in side-by-side quads, brightly colored, and are within close distance of the 2600 SF, Common House.  We've been here 3 years, and I still smile every morning when I wake up and realize we really live here! There are challenges for us to learn new ways to communicate and navigate the process of making decisions with 27 other homeowners. I feel like there's always something coming up to do, and something new for me to learn which is essential to keep our minds active and engaged!  Pat and I wanted to avoid the loneliness and isolation we often see as folks age and mobility becomes more difficult. In addition, we wanted to be in a community with like-minded neighbors who could share resources and give and receive neighborly support. Village Hearth was a dream in 2015 when we hired our Development Consultant, Katie McCamant (Cohousing Solutions) and by 2020 we were moving into our completed homes. We are a lovely mix of well-educated, well-traveled, politically aware, partnered, married, widowed, divorced, and living single or with partners/spouses. We also are a mix of LGBTQ+ folks and folks who identify themselves as “straight”.  All of us at Village Hearth have a special bond because of all we have seen affect the LGBTQ+ community over the decades. We have rejoiced and cried at the events we have seen in person or on TV.  We have come too far to have to go back into the closet. Prior to Starship's inaugural launch, environmental policy expert Eric Roesch was outspoken about the possibility of catastrophe. As the rocket launched, it kicked up massive clouds of dust and decimated its launchpad, scattering large chunks of concrete into delicate marine and coastal sanctuaries nearby. Eric blames both SpaceX and its regulatory body, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), for allowing the company to skirt responsibility in its environmental reporting and mitigating its impact on its surrounding wilderness. He joins the show to discuss the proper role of environmental regulations, why he believes the FAA was irresponsible in approving SpaceX's launch licenses, and how you can simultaneously protect the environment and local wildlife while still pursuing an ambitious path to space. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz was a gender-bending, revolutionary text ahead of its time, in no small part because of Matilda Gage; and how Susan B. Anthony erased Matilda Gage's name from the pages of history. (This episode was originally released on 4/1/21.)
