From time to time, we want to replay episodes that really stuck out to us or maybe episodes that feel relevant to things going on around us, and this is one of those. Whether you've heard it before or this is your first time, I think there's always something new to learn about Scripture. I recently got to teach the kick off to a brand new series at Cross Point, where we're spending an entire year going through the book of Mark. Y'all know how I feel about the Gospels!! This Cross Point sermon could not have been more perfectly picked for me. I read a bunch of books and commentaries to prepare for this sermon, and I went back to our Gospels episode with Dr. Esau McCaulley to listen to him teach on the book of Mark and my feet were barely on the ground—I was so fired up about this book. This episode isn't in your TSF Seasons Guidebook, but you'll want your notes page out for this one! . . . . . You're invited to read through the Gospels with us during the month of May. This is our unabridged interview with Esau McCaulley. What is it like growing up Black in the American South? The question is too particular to answer with abstraction. Instead, Esau McCaulley answers it in the most personal, humble way available, by telling the story of his family in his new memoir, “How Far to the Promised Land: One Black Family's Story of Hope and Survival in the American South.” In this episode, Esau discusses what he uncovered from a season of digging deeply into family and national history, and describes what the experience taught him about race, faith, and the culture of the South in the United States. Former president and born again Christian, Jimmy Carter, died at the age of 100. As the media reflects on his legacy of public service and humanitarianism, some are contrasting Carter's faith with that of conservative white evangelicals. Esau McCaulley says Carter is being used as a cudgel by progressives to shame their political opponents. Is he right? Skye and Phil unpack two explanations for the country's rejection of President Carter for Ronald Reagan in 1980. Was Carter too liberal or too humble? Then, pastor and Holy Post Pundit, Gabriel Salguero, is back to talk about a second Trump administration's plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and how Christians and church leaders should hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Also this week—Phil wants to do a telethon for turtles. Our very own New Testament scholar Dr. Esau McCaulley joins Kaitlyn to talk about fear: who feared Jesus, who felt safe with Jesus, and how scary the resurrection might actually be. Dr. McCaulley shows us how Jesus' disciples responded to him in different stories in the gospels, eventually pointing us towards the (somewhat terrifying!) hope that Jesus' resurrection gives us. - Sponsor - Glorify - Sign up for the #1 Christian Daily Devotional App to help you stay focused on God. Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
How is the Holy Spirit leading us to engage with scripture in new and fresh ways? That's what Ruth and guest Esau McCaulley discuss this week. Esau shares about his work editing The New Testament in Color: A Multi-Ethnic Commentary on the New Testament. They discuss how we need each other, reading and interpreting across all kinds of different cultures and contexts in order to best discern the mind of Christ, how differently we can view a biblical story depending on which character's shoes we put ourselves in, and the importance of relinquishing control when it comes to a broader reading of scripture. This season we are exploring the future of Christian spirituality. Based on her own experience and the lives of people she accompanies on the journey, Ruth has been naming what she is noticing and observing regarding the future of Christian spirituality– how the Spirit is moving and how we can align ourselves to participate in the future God is leading us into. Elements she is naming include respect for the role of desire; emphasis on spiritual direction; welcoming and inclusive; committed to justice; and more. This season Ruth will sit down with thoughtful Christian leaders to discuss their thoughts on one of these elements, as it has to do with the future of Christian spirituality. This season was inspired by the Beyond Words series by the same name. Check out those posts here. How can we talk about America's ongoing legacy of racism without sliding into despair? In his new memoir HOW FAR TO THE PROMISED LAND, Esau McCaulley tells his own story—and questions why Black failure is judged collectively, while Black success is perceived as the merit of an individual. Esau McCaulley (PhD, St. Andrews University) joins David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcast to discuss his upcoming lecture at the Lanier Theological Library, October 12, 2024. His title is “The Gospels and the Anti-Slavery Movement.” Many scholars and critics of the Bible conclude that the proper reading of the Christian Scripture promotes slavery and is thus immoral. Indeed, the best cases made from the Bible during the anti-slavery movement were on the side of the slave owners and defenders. Esau McCaulley challenges that conclusion; he says the best readings of Scripture were on the side of the abolitionists. In this lecture McCaulley will show how the life and teachings of Jesus ultimately undermine one of humanity's oldest and gravest sins. Megan Basham's new book claims progressive powerbrokers have corrupted evangelical leaders with money, praise, and prestige, but many of her citations are being called into question. Which evangelical leaders are really being seduced by money? Then former Congressman, Adam Kinzinger, sits down with Skye to talk about the relationship between Christianity and the Republican Party, what comes after Trump, and the outsized role of fear in our politics 0:00 - Intro 1:40 - Show Starts 4:06 - Theme Song 4:26 - Sponsor - Sundays Dog Food - Get 40% off your first order of Sundays. Oklahoma is requiring public schools to teach the Bible, but some teachers are resisting. Is this really about education or indoctrination? What comes to your mind when you hear the word, "humility"? Do you think doormat, walk over, self-deprecation, or strength, wisdom, boundaries, and peace? Humility can be a tough subject to tackle, but today we have the perfect duo to walk us through the connection between humility and peace: Guest Host, Esau McCaulley, and Dr. Joel Muddamalle. Esau is a long time friend of The Happy Hour and has provided us with incredible conversations around his books, Reading While Black and How Far to the Promised Land. Esau is an author and associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College. His writing and speaking focus on New Testament theology, African American Biblical interpretation, and Christian public theology. His book Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope won numerous awards, including Christianity Today's book of the year. Esau is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. His writings have also appeared in places such as The Atlantic, Washington Post, and Christianity Today.Joel serves as the Director of Theology and Research for Proverbs 31 Ministries and Lysa TerKeurst, and is a part of the preaching team at Transformation Church with Pastor Derwin Gray. Joel earned a PhD in Theology under Drs. Patrick Schreiner (NT) and Michael Heiser (OT) with an emphasis on Paul's household language in Ephesians as it relates to the Old Testament. He loves studying and teaching the brilliant truths found in Scripture and unpacking how they relate to our everyday lives.Whether we've incorrectly defined humility or underestimated its relevance to our daily life, we believe humility is the missing piece for the security, strength and confidence we all want. It's time to stop trying so hard to avoid our limitations or overcompensate for them. God has better for us and it begins with bowing low in humility! Thanks for listening and sharing this episode with a friend! The newest Holy Post team member, Esau McCaulley, joins Phil and Skye to discuss two stories that caused outrage from both ends of the political spectrum during Holy Week. Trump is selling an American flag-wrapped Bible, and the Biden administration honored “Transgender Visibility Day” on Easter. And why are Catholic Charities being attacked for helping immigrants? Then Skye talks to atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe about how her evangelical faith led her to become a climate scientist. She says combating global warming is part of our call to love our neighbors and care for the least of these. Plus, an “emerging behavior” on Twitch grabs Phil's attention. Presence has a profound impact on our lives. So does its opposite—absence. On this episode of Being Human, Steve Cross welcomes author, professor, and public theologian Esau McCaulley. McCaulley's book Reading While Black is dedicated to his father, which may lead people to believe that they had a close relationship. But, McCaulley says that dedication was his way of declaring, “I forgive you.” During their conversation, Cross and McCaulley talk about how the absence of paternal love can shape a child. They discuss how McCaulley's childhood affects his parenting, the role of humor in processing trauma, and the power of memory. They talk about racism, shame, and the roots of dehumanization. And they consider the presence of God's love and redemption. Due to an unexpected crisis, Jamie will be delaying her book publicity and tour. She will also be taking a break from social media, public appearances, and recording podcasts until she has had time to process, discern, and recover. The best way you can show Jamie your love and support is to listen to these pre-recorded shows and share with a friend. In today's show, Jamie and Esau chat about how important it is to sit, read, and listen to stories and experiences that may not affect us. We always have an easy way out of conversations that don't directly impact our lives. But Jesus calls us to compassion and empathy and to love one another through joys and pains. We love the reminder from Esau that everything we need to love one another well is in scripture - what a blessing it is that we truly have the answer.Esau McCaulley is an associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. Structural racism and social justice in the United States of America is a complicated story. I couldn't think of anyone better to have on the show to talk about that complicated story other than today's guest, my friend, Esau McCaulley. Esau McCaulley is an associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. He is the author of many works including Sharing in the Son's Inheritance and Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope. He is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and his writings have also appeared in places such as The Atlantic, Washington Post, and Christianity Today. In Esau's newest book, How Far to the Promised Land: One Family's Story of Hope and Survival in the American South, he takes us on a journey through his family tree and the community that shaped him into the man he is today. He raises questions like what it means to be human and what does each person's struggle to build a life teach us about what we owe each other? This book brings into light our often too-simple narrative of poverty and upward mobility. I encourage you to lean into the hard, engage in the tough conversations, and go pre-order this book today! In today's episode, Sharon is joined by Esau McCaulley for a powerful conversation about his new book, How Far to the Promised Land. In his memoir, he took the story of his family and showed the struggles of Black people in America intergenerationally. Esau shares how it's vital to understand how the stories of our ancestors – though they might seem insignificant – impact and shape generations to come. In a country that highly values “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps,” and the underdog, Esau questions the narrative that we achieve entirely on our own, and asks why our society requires exceptionalism from Black people.
