This episode features Joe Wos whose passion for drawing mazes and cartoons began at an early age and has shaped his unique career. Over the years, Wos' art has evolved into a whimsical blend of mazes and cartoons that he calls Mazetoons. Regarded as a master maze maker, Wos created the world's largest hand-drawn maze in 2012. Measuring 140 square feet, it features more than 100 illustrations. One of Wos' mural-sized mazes is on permanent display at StarKist's international headquarters, and Wos is the cartoonist who draws the iconic Charlie the Tuna character for the company. For the past 20 years, Wos has been the visiting resident cartoonist of the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California. In Pittsburgh, Wos founded the ToonSeum, one of three museums dedicated to cartoon arts in the United States. In addition to creating his own art, Wos teaches cartooning at Central Catholic High School as well as by hosting “Cartoon Academy,” a PBS television program that teaches the art of cartooning. Now in its third season, the show recently won two Mid-Atlantic Emmys—Host/Moderator; Educational Content Short Form. During our conversation we explore the challenges and rewards Wos has experienced as he navigated such an unconventional career. Additional information about Joe Wos is available at www.mazetoons.com. His books are available on Amazon. If you would like to own one of Joe Wos' unique Mazetoons, visit the scholarpractitionernexus.com where you can find several different maze designs depicting the often messy, swampy nature of educational practice.
On a new episode of Teachers’ Lounge: Marcel Walker! He’s a comic book artist and art teacher extraordinaire. Marcel helped create the educational comic series “ CHUTZ-POW! Superheroes of the Holocaust ” with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh and works with “ToonSeum" -- a museum of comics and cartoons. The ToonSeum even held an exhibition called “ From MLK to March: Civil Rights in Comics and Cartoons ” with civil rights icon, the late Representative John Lewis. Peter and Marcel are also massive comic book nerds and had a lot of fun talking about the history of comics in education especially holocaust and civil rights comics. Hello! This is Jennifer and this is a chat with Marcel Walker and Wayne Wise, two of the five artists of Chutz Pow!, a comic created in collaboration with the Toonseum and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. Chutz Pow!, besides being an awesome pun, is a powerful, emotional, and educational collection of visual stories from Holocaust survivors, or "superheroes," as the comic dubs them. The chat we had with these two was amazing and filled with a ton of emotions. Besides chatting about their backgrounds and how the two met, they gave us some insight on the process of creating a comic and some of the work that went into this particular one. They also did not hesitate to tell a few compelling stories of the Holocaust superheroes featured in the comic. As well as some heavy, but inspiring, content, we also go on a few fun tangents on names and Pittsburgh, but we never failed to bring it back to topic. Chutz Pow! is having a Comic Launch Party at the Toonseum Thursday, August 14 from 8-11 PM. It will be a fun event and ya'll should go out and support the Toonseum, the Holocaust Center, and these artists, who are all doing a great thing in honoring these survivors and fighters. It's time your your favourite podcast, my friends. And this one's a doozy. Not just because it includes a peek into the Unknown Studio mailbag (which it does); not just because it includes a story from the Christmas Bureau (which it does); and not just because it includes the inaugural Edmonton: A City segment, brought to you by Matt Hirji, Simon Yackulic, Sam Brooks and Jonn Kmech (which it absolutely does)... But it also includes an interview with the founder of the Toonseum, Joe Wos. Scott and I had the opportunity to speak with Joe at Pure Speculation. We actually interviewed him before a live studio audience. We'd love to do a lot more of that. No, my laptop is pooched, which is why there's no image for this show on our feature banner above. That's also why I can't give you a show breakdown. This will all be corrected tomorrow. Meanwhile, I assure you, this podcast will be music to your ears. Enjoy!
Bryan, Jamie D, Murd and Pants hung out in Monroeville this weekend chatting it up with Mihailo Vukelic, the Toonseum, Tommy Castillo and more. (1:14:44)
Black Shawn, white Shawn, and Chad join us to talk about the upcoming Pittsburgh Con. We also learn a little about the Toonseum. Pittsburgh is always one of our favorite shows and I'm sure this year will be no different.
