Episode 293: “Dynasty Established” - Super Bowl XIII (Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys)Episode 293 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're concluding our block on some of professional football's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing Super Bowl XIII between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys. In what was a rematch of Super Bowl X, both the Steelers and Cowboys battled to become the first NFL team to win three Super Bowl titles. In a game which featured Hall of Fame coaches (Chuck Noll and Tom Landry) and dozens of Hall of Fame players on both teams, Super Bowl XIII was the most exciting installment of this game to this point in history.Pittsburgh's offense found success against Dallas' “Doomsday Defense” towards the end of the first half, and quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw three touchdown passes to John Stallworth (2x) and Rocky Bleier to give the Steelers a 21-14 lead at halftime. The Cowboys mounted a great second half drive against “The Steel Curtain” and could've tied the game at 21-21 until tight end Jackie Smith dropped a Roger Staubach pass which forced a field goal.Pittsburgh responded with a huge Franco Harris rushing touchdown, and took advantage of a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Bradshaw hit Lynn Swann on the first play from scrimmage for a touchdown which put Pittsburgh's lead at 35-17.To the Cowboys' credit, they responded in the fourth quarter and made the game 35-31 late. Sadly for Dallas, they ran out of time, and Pittsburgh became the first team to win three Super Bowls.Terry Bradshaw won Super Bowl MVP in the only game of his career where he threw for 300+ passing yards. Moreover, the Steelers established themselves as the NFL's: “Team of the 70s.”Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #pittsburghsteelers#dallascowboys#cowboys#nfl#superbowl#nflplayoffs

The Past Our Prime podcast is heading into season 2 but before we look back to the future lets look ahead to the past. There were plenty of great stories in sports from 1974 starting with the Miami Dolphins repeating as Super Bowl champions behind SB MVP Larry Csonka who joined us for our 3rd episode. A week later, the UCLA Bruins 88-game winning streak ended at the hands of Notre Dame and former Bruins team captain and later their head coach Larry Farmer joined us to talk about that fateful day before joining us a 2nd time when his friend and teammate Bill Walton died suddenly this past May. And from there, we just took off... in April of 1974, Hank Aaron set the all-time record for Home Runs by hitting one out in Atlanta. That ball was caught by his teammate, Tom House who joined us to talk about Henry, and a great story about a no-hitter by Nolan Ryan when he was the pitching coach for the Rangers. Jenny Fulle became the first girl to play Little League, Johnny Rutherford won the Indy 500, Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent led the Flyers to a Cup and Boston Globe writer Bob Ryan joined us for one of three times to talk about the Celtics winning it all in '74. Mike Eruzione and the Miracle on Ice. Ali beats Frazier and Foreman. Tommy John has surgery. The Oakland A's make it 3 straight. Jimmy Connors is #1 in the world and engaged to Chrissy Evert. Jennifer Chandler and John Kinsella both win gold medals. Evel Knievel is jumping over any and everything. JK MccKay and Anthony Davis are leading USC to a national title and Rocky Bleier returns from Vietnam to win the first of 4 Super Bowls with the Steelers. It was an amazing year in sports 50 years ago and we cover it from start to finish with the help of Curry Kirkpatrick and Hall of Famers Joe Delamielleure, Rick Barry and Nancy Lieberman who caps off the year talking about her friend and mentor Muhammad Ali, the 1974 Sportsman of the Year. So, before we get on to 1975, take a look back at what took place 50 years ago in '74. It was a year to remember, and that;s just what we did on the Past Our Prime podcast. This years-in-the-making curriculum is revolutionizing the way student designers understand the industry by partnering with the university's agriculture program so they can learn about the origin of fiber and the laborious processes involved in creating textiles, Working in tandem with existing textiles and sustainability courses, students are leaving the program with a regenerative, ecosystemic lens adept for ‘slow fashion' — a distinctly different point of view than many of their peers across the globe. Recent graduate Chelsea LaReina Hidalgo is one such designer. Check out the interview in YNST Magazine where she talks about her senior collection and how she made her three looks using fully biodegradable textiles, natural dyes and recycled wool. In the fall, the oak-hickory forest that surrounds the lake makes for a beautiful blend of autumnal color. If you've got your own kayak or a canoe, bring it so you can marvel at the incredible forest display from the water. There are also some docks around the lake where you can immerse yourself in the fall foliage show. Paul Harvey - Rocky Bleier
In Part 1 of Season 11, Episode 51, I'm joined by Steelers Legend Rocky Bleier and The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters. Rocky is one of the greatest storytellers in sports and has been a frequent and favorite guest over the years. He first joined me way back in 2011, and this marks the 13th time I've had the honor of chatting with him. We'll dive into the Steelers' season, revisit his early days in Pittsburgh, and hear some fantastic stories about playing alongside Terry Bradshaw. Rocky also shares his thoughts on the toughest moments he's had on the football field, my favorite Chuck Noll story, and his experiences playing in some of his favorite Pro-Ams. Following Rocky, we get our monthly visit from The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters. This time, Doc talks about how to create a "Personal Zone of Control" and the importance of managing our expectations rather than trying to meet the expectations of others and creating a personal playing space. It's a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their mental game. Tune in for these amazing stories and more!
In 1968 Rocky Bleier was drafted in the 16th round of the NFL, the 417th player selected. In 1969 Rocky Bleier was drafted again. This time by the Army. Instead of training camp for the Steelers he was in basic training for the United States. A few months later he found himself halfway across the world, with a grenade launcher in his hand when he heard gunfire. He took cover but it was too late... a bullet had struck him in the leg. Despite being wounded, he located where the North Vietnamese soldier was firing from and sent a grenade in his direction. Unfortunately, a grenade was also heading towards him, hitting a soldier square in the back before falling to the ground right at Rocky's legs. An instant later it blew up, badly injuring Bleier. His time in Vietnam was over and many thought his time in the NFL was over as well. But not Bleier. Despite his doctor's telling him he'd live a "normal life" that didn't include football, Rocky had other plans. And a note from Steelers owner Art Rooney provided all the motivation he would need to get back on the field. It said simply, "Rock – the team's not doing well. We need you.“ In 1970, Rocky was one of the final cuts for the Steelers but once again the Steelers loyalty to Bleier provided him the strength and will to continue on. Dan Rooney, the Steelers GM decided the team wasn't cutting Bleier but instead was putting him on injured reserve. After another year of training and rehad, Bleier tried out for the Steelers again in 1971.... and made the team. And he made that same Pittsburgh team for 9 more seasons, winning four Super Bowl along the way before retiring after the 1980 season. It's a story of perseverance and dedication, of duty and honor, of loyalty and resilience. It's the story of Rocky Bleier... and he tells it in great detail this week on the Past Our Prime podcast. Super Bowls are a time for leaders to step up. And for heroes to me made. But they're not real heroes. They're football players. And most of them are not real heroes. But a generation ago, there was a real hero playing in the Super Bowl. A true legend. And that legend was established the moment he stepped back on an NFL field. And was elevated after he made it to the Super Bowl. And after he won FOUR of them. Against all odds, he became the only purple heart recipient in history to win a Super Bowl. And the only one to win FOUR! For more than two years, he drove himself. Little by little he overcame obstacles and fought his way back. He not only made the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also eventually became a starting running back on a team that won four Super Bowls and became the greatest football team of the 20th century. The hard lessons Rocky Bleier (@RockyBleier) learned early in his life that helped him overcome adversity and reach his goals, have paid off after football. These lessons are seen between the lines in the popular book on his life, "Fighting Back" and on stages of speaking appearances around the country. Rocky Bleier is a true hero. A true champion. Not just a Super Bowl champion. But a champion for veterans. A champion for America. And, now, a champion for independents everywhere. He's leading an effort in his home state of Pennsylvania to end the ridiculous and un-American closed primaries. And continuing to inspire millions. Welcome to a conversation with a true champion. After a grenade injured both his legs and sent him home from Vietnam, Army Specialist Robert Patrick "Rocky" Bleier made a full recovery and went on to win four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh steelers. In college, Bleier played for Notre Dame and was a part of the ‘66 National Championship team. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers' 16th round draft pick, but was drafted by the US Army after the 10th game of the season. Bleier was sent to Vietnam, where he patrolled the Hiep Duc Valley as a grenadier. During a firefight, he was shot, and then a grenade exploded right by his feet. Bleier had this to say about being evacuated by a sister platoon: “All of a sudden a fellow soldier reaches down and picks me up and throws me over his shoulder and starts carrying me to the helicopter. And the helicopter was still a far way away. And so he would put me down, my blood all over him and he'd catch his breath and pick me up again and continue on until he got me onto that chopper. And I never saw him again and didn't know who he was or where he came from, where he lived or anything. But the interesting thing was that he was a soldier of color. Now, it may not mean much now in that society, but at that time, back in the sixties. I mean, a lot of things were going on from a social basis. I mean, there was segregation still going on in colleges that would not let Black students be there or sign up. And so now all of a sudden, here it is, you have a Black soldier picking me up, not because he's Black and I'm white, but it was like brother to brother. And it was the immediacy of the time. And you don't think about race, you don't think about anything. And I think that's one of the great things about the military. It just levels the playing field for human beings to react with one another and as a fellow soldier. And so that was like we became brothers in that brotherhood of war.” SPC Bleier earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service, and was sent home after his injury. Upon arrival in 1970, he returned to the Steelers, and began intense training in order to fully heal from his leg injuries. In 1974, he finally earned a spot in the starting backfield. Bleier would go on to win four Super Bowls with the Steelers, in 1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980. To learn more about Bleier and his incredible football career, check out his book, Fighting Back. I'm wrapping up this week of football comeback stories with Rocky Bleier, who after his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Steelers was drafted into the Army and later shipped off to Viet Nam. Bleier was shot in battle and while lying on the ground had a grenade land near him and a comrade. While attempting to cover the grenade he suffered major injuries to his leg and foot from the blast. He tried returning to the NFL, but was in constant pain and was nearly 40 lbs under his playing weight. Finally, after four years and being released twice he made it into the Steelers starting lineup, rushing and blocking as the teams fullback and RB2. The next year in 1975, he and teammate Franco Harris both rushed for over 1000 yards. Bleier remained with the Steelers winning four Super Bowls and retired as their 4th all-time leading rusher. Former Steeler Rocky Bleier joined the show. Rocky gave his “One Man's Opinion” from Steelers-Browns Thursday night. Rocky said this team still needs some time to develop and figure out how to play together. Rocky said a big part of the issues on offense is staying on the field and the time of possession numbers are ugly. On a positive, he said the team has been in all three games. Rocky threw out some of his questions for the offense. The guys asked Rocky when the team's identity should start to become apparent, which is soon. He said a win on Sunday and being 2-2 isn't a terrible spot and it could be a big boost. Rocky suggested having Mitch Trubisky calling the plays or at least experimenting with it. The guys, unfortunately, don't think there's a chance of that happening because the trust isn't there from Mike Tomlin or Matt Canada.
Former Steeler Rocky Bleier joined the show. Rocky said his postgame Steelers analysis will be back this season on social media. Rocky wants to see who will rise to the occasion in the Steelers QB battle. He said it's a tough job for a rookie to jump right in, like Kenny Pickett would be doing. He said Pickett is the undisputed fan favorite of the QBs and Mason Rudolph seemingly has none left. He said it doesn't matter and he doesn't care who starts if the offensive line doesn't see any improvement from last season. Rocky was disappointed when he went to a practice in shorts last week so he left. Rocky talked about what his camps were like back in the 70's compared to today. Rocky said he can do a live reaction with the guys after a bad game this year, if it presents itself.
It is a Steelers game week. There were some updates from Steelers practice, including more impressive stuff from George Pickens. Poni posed a big quarterback question – should the Steelers sign Jimmy Garoppolo if the 49ers release him this week? Chris said no after some thinking. Poni believes he's way too injury prone to be the answer. Jimmy G can get the team to the playoffs, but how much further can he really take the team? Mason Rudolph met with the media – mentioning how much different the playbook seems with a certain QB no longer on the team. Poni doesn't believe Matt Canada was held back by Ben Roethlisberger. Chris does. Former Steeler Rocky Bleier joined the show. Rocky said his postgame Steelers analysis will be back this season on social media.
