I'm going to borrow the description from the starred review in Publishers Weekly. They said "Put Fiddler on the Roof and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in a blender, add a jigger or two of Seinfeld, and the result is this boisterous and affirming graphic novel." Doesn't that sound amazing?

Until then, we'd like to extend our sincere condolences to Trina's family, friends, and fans and wish Ms. Robbins safe travels as she passes on to the Great Hereafter.
Today we share excerpts from “She's Beautiful When She's Angry,” a documentary filled with stories that still resonate today as women face new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence. The documentary tells the stories of the activists of the Women's Liberation Movement that gained traction in the late 1960s and led to social and policy changes that set women on a path towards equality and reproductive justice. It also addresses the intersections of race and gender and the experiences of the Black women who were integral to this movement. The film is about activists, those who inspire, organize, and revolutionize the world by changing the standards and broadening what we think is possible.

One of the pioneering women cartoonists of the 20th century, Trina Robbins was a founding member of the underground comix scene, using alternative press in New York and San Francisco to publish her work. Along the way, she designed Vampirella's costume, adapted various novels, and created Misty (an update of Millie the Model) for Marvel's Star Comics. She may be best known for her work with Wonder Woman, especially her The Legend of Wonder Woman mini-series (written by Kurt Busiek) and the graphic novel Wonder Woman: The Once and Future Story (with Colleen Doran). She's also a historian of women in cartooning, having written a number of books on the subject. Trina is a fascinating creator, and in this Oren Only interview, you'll see exactly why. _____________________If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Tits & Clits changed the underground comics scene forever. Over its 15-year-long existence, the anthology published such now legendary cartoonists as Mary Fleener, Roberta Gregory and Trina Robbins. The series tackled then-verboten topics like female sexuality, abortion and more, driven by cocreators Lyn Chevli and Joyce Farmer. Both artists continued to have impacts on comics and social movements, though Chevli passed in 2016. In 2010, Farmer released Special Exits, a powerful and touching based on her parents' final years. In Jewish Women in Comics: Bodies and Borders (Syracuse UP, 2022), contributors draw upon a rich treasure trove of Jewish women's comics to explore the representation of Jewish women's bodies and bodily experiences in pictorial narratives. Spanning national, cultural, and artistic borders, the essays shine a light on the significant contributions of Jewish women to comics. The volume features established figures including Emil Ferris, Amy Kurzweil, Miriam Libicki, Trina Robbins, Sharon Rudahl, and Ilana Zeffren, alongside works by artists translated for the first time into English, such as artist Rona Mor. Exploring topics of family, motherhood, miscarriages, queerness, gender and Judaism, illness, war, Haredi and Orthodox family life, and the lingering impact of the Holocaust, the contributors present unique, at times intensely personal, insights into how Jewishness intersects with other forms of identity and identification. In doing so, the volume deepens our understanding of Jewish women's experiences. Nathan Abrams is a professor of film at Bangor University in Wales. Trina Robbins was memorialized as the first of Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon with her sketches and second-hand clothes, but, don't be fooled, Trina is a serious archivist of feminist art history. She drew for underground newspapers during the Women's Lib movement of the sixtes and has published multiple anthologies of early women in comics. In this episode, we discuss many of her books, including her memoir, Last Girl Standing, and the documentary she is featured in, They're Beautiful When They're Angry. And she still loves clothes! So we talk about her favorite era, vintage clothes, and where to find them. Trina was the first woman to draw Wonder Woman, so we talk about her and what it was like to be an early female cartoonist in a man's field. We also discuss the weather and the pros and cons of New York versus California. A really lovely episode. With Bill Aho.Come find Trina at the San Francisco FanExpo this weekend, Nov 25-27!https://fanexpohq.com/fanexposanfrancisco/Trina's memoir:https://bookshop.org/p/books/last-girl-standing-trina-robbins/12493623?ean=9781683960140Thoughts?
