We often take for granted what we like in Magic, but to our friends, family, and partners, it can be a mystery.  This is often times what will get suggested to a non-magic-player, should they go into an LGS and ask “What should I get for the MtG player in my life?” As a Magic player, I think I genuinely don’t like to get sealed product all that much. I think sealed product is a lot better for newer players, or younger players, as they may not know what they want yet. What do we like least about creating content? Each of us talk about why Ryan - It started as a way to kind of keep a record for my kids (hence the #MtGDad moments every episode). Also, Magic is something I’m very passionate about. Why do we each create content? How much time do we each spend on the content we create each week? PJ Zack - 2ish recording, 2ish editing (4-6 when it’s video), unknown on twitter, various amounts of time for graphic design, various amounts mailing things. 1-hour planning episode with Ryan, 1 hour if writing show notes Ryan - 2ish hours on the night we record, 1 hour planning the show (more if it involves building a deck). 1 hour proofing the show each week. 1 hour uploading the show. There are lots of other various time things as well. Creating content takes time The Magic community is pretty friggin awesome When you create content consistently with another person, you really develop a special bond You get to know a lot of really awesome people, both other content creators, and your listeners/viewers It’s really cool the first time you meet, or interact with someone who you’ve helped make their life better (even if it’s just in some small way) You get to learn...like a LOT. I’ve always been a lifelong learner, and there’s pretty much no end to the stuff you can learn. Audio, video, lighting, web design, how to use social media, technology, woodworking, you name it. What makes creating content worth it? Find a co-host(s) you have chemistry with, who you can trust, who are committed (unless of course you’re doing a 1-person show) Figure out the name. Seriously, take a LOT of time with this. We were almost “Commander Onramp”.(no we weren’t -z) Register the domain, look to see if there is anything else out there, past or present with the same/similar name Get accounts on all of the social media sites, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail account, patreon, Youtube, the sky is the limit here. Also, keep current with new social media things as they come about, and register those accounts. Figure out a schedule you can commit to and BE CONSISTENT we used LogoOrbit, and it can be pretty costly. There are cheaper alternatives out there, fiver, etc etc We placed our initial order for about $150 on April 29th, 2019. We Finished up with them on June 14th, and we must have gone back and forth like 50 times. We think it was worth the time and effort We were willing to spend the time and money on getting a good logo, because this wasn’t our first podcast and we knew we were going to be in it for the long haul. You can always rebrand later, but you definitely want a logo before you ever publish your first episode Get a logo Make your content available EVERYWHERE. We use libsyn to do this. PJ - Anything especially important with YouTube? It will take TIME before you get a regular set of listeners/viewers. Like even more time than you think (probably, I’m sure there are other stories out there about someone becoming an overnight success). Be patient, Be active on social media! It will take a while to get good. Creating content is like any other skill, Playing Guitar, Playing Magic, Sewing, whatever. I know I was SOOOO self-conscious in the beginning. I am, and probably always will be my harshest critic, but you can’t let that stop you if creating content is truly something you want to do. Not every episode will be great. Trust us! However, each episode is likely something you can learn from. If you do this, and constantly strive to get better, you WILL get better over time. Tips for people thinking about starting a podcast/youtube channel Main Topic -Content Creation Creating content is NOT easy, but it CAN be worth it. Each deck has 20 cards: 12 “friends” (aka creatures) and 8 spells, all of which are sorcery speed. Toughness was done away with, each friend’s power is equal to its casting cost to simplify, and the turn order was further cut down to better allow preschoolers to understand. Now, we all have that player in our group who could use a 3-year-old’s version explained to them. So tell me: how would you help the preschooler in your playgroup grasp the complexities of Magic?

(aka Mono-Red Other People’s Cardboard) I came up with the Slot Table for this deck, before I selected any cards to go in it. What luggage are you allowed? Are there additional fees? What happens if you miss your flight? Ryan - I try to REALLY challenge myself to only bring the top 5 Commander decks I’m interested in playing for the weeknd (and maybe also a brawl deck or two). Also, a good idea to bring different decks of varying power level, cause you don’t know who you will play against all weekend Do NOT overpack Travelling Be Friendly and Open to New Experiences No one owes you their time Everyone’s else may have different ideas of what is fun Be aware of your surroundings Do not leave your stuff unattended Hook your backpack/travel bag to a chair leg or to you Make sure zippers are not easily opened If you have a large and/or expensive collection you can get insurance for it It is a special rider that is added to your homeowners or renters insurance. It is cheap For extremely price items, insurance companies will want physical proof such as receipt of purchase or a picture of the item. Keeping a digital copy of your decks/collection online can help you during a claim. A police report is required to file an insurance claim Inform the event organizers, let them know if there are any unique items that may identify the collection   If you are unfortunate and your collection is stolen at an event, immediately file a police report GET INSURANCE! Especially if you are in the Main Event On site food is typically overpriced and not the greatest quality. Bring Snacks and Water Ask random people to play with you Make a sign advertising Post to twitter with a picture of the table number you are at and the Hashtag for the event, e.g. #GPVegas Once started a game with someone’s casual deck - turned out to be a crazy Thassa combo deck that got Omniscience out on turn 4. Don’t get mad - be polite Find a group that you enjoy Make new friends Not all decks are made the same If you are just there to play Casual Commander Visit your favorite artist Card signing are typically $1 -$2 per signature Make sure to UNSLEEVE your cards while you are standing in line. Don’t be that person making everyone wait while you are unsleeving double-sleeved cards Be prepared with what you want. You are not the only person in line. Most artist love discussing their artwork, but be respectful of their time, especially if they are busy. It’s really cool to meet and have conversations with MtG Celebrities. Most of the ones I have met are super happy to sign a playmat, and you’ll come out with an amazing, one-of-a-kind souvenir It’s good to have a few different color of sharpies available Also, a playmat with a bright color background, makes sure signatures show up really well. (For example, the first playmat I made with the BW logo was on a black background, which just didn’t work out all that well). Blank playmats are often available at the tournament site Bring a playmat and some sharpies! Panels include everything from format specific discussions, comedy sketches, to instructional how to’s.
