Disclaimer: Zack and I have played a total of 5 or so games of cEDH between us, so we are by no means experts EDH pushed to the limit, with no compromises made in deck building. All legal cards/combos are fair game, as is stax, etc What is cEDH? We both love EDH, and it felt important for us to educate ourselves on cEDH We don’t plan on becoming Competitive Social or anything like that Since cEDH is part of EDH we wanted to have some experience playing so that we can have a frame of reference when discussing. Here’s a good link: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/ We spent a lot of time reading about, and watching videos on cEDH, researched quite a few decks in the meta. http://budgetbrews.club/ Discord: http://budgetbrews.club/#Discord Budget EDH page We thought folks out there might find it interesting if they have never thought about venturing into cEDH territory Why are we doing this episode? Ryan - 4 Color Curious Control, helmed by Thrasios + Vial Smasher http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/4c-rashmi-curious-control/ This Deck was suggested to me by “Someone” from the Spike Feeders via Twitter DM. Maybe Jim??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-KHswpZF1k Video about Curious Control by the Lab Maniacs (Warning, they may have some adult language) Based on: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/urza-paradox-scepter/ Zack’s Version: https://archidekt.com/decks/420449#Urza_Power_Scepter_-_Semi_Budget_(cEDH) Zack - Urza, Power Scepter Let’s talk about the decks we’ve made Played with Austin, and PJ from CommanderReplay https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrudMyVbtvyVyadYddhousA https://twitter.com/CommanderReplay Players Austin was playing Gitrog Zack was playing a borrowed Prosh + Food Chain combo deck PJ was playing a Boros, Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero deck Ryan was playing Curious Control PJ won on turn 4 or 5 with Gerrard, Loyal Retainers, and Grinding Station I had no idea what was going on. Austin was very kind and offered me advice, but a control deck is pretty hard to pilot when you’re not sure what is going on, and what all is possible (Hard to know what to counter, for example) Game 1 Zack was going to get a new pod going, and we were waiting for some players to finish, so Austin, PJ, and I decided to shuffle up for a 3 player cEDH game PJ ended up winning this one is similar fashion, although, I think I did bad things like cast a Fire Covenant at sorcery speed, and countered the wrong spells, and basically stifled Austin (playing Gitrog), and was essentially king maker Game 2 Games we played at Mothership Ryan Man, I am BAD at this format. I think a lot of this is unfamiliarity, and I’m sure that will come with time. It’s really interesting to play with all of these crazy combos/busted cards that I don’t normally play with, at least not in this density in my decks I feel like there is potentially more shuffling than in a normal game, because so much of the game is DEPENDANT on your starting hand. I think this is true because in a regular game of EDH, there is more time for you to play catchup, and often time folks will leave you alone if you’re mana screwed. That being said, being able to play a whole game in under half an hour is pretty sweet Fighting battles on the stack is pretty interesting, and not something we tend to see a whole lot of in our local meta I feel like I’m less able to express myself through Deck-building in cEDH, because I feel like many/most of the card choices for any given deck are necessary/required. Maybe my thoughts on this will change over time? I just know that many of the goofy/random type things I like to do in regular EDH are not viable in cEDH (example: Mr. OPC). That being said, I still think cEDH is pretty cool, and I want to get to know the format better. Playing cEDH was very disorienting the first time because I was playing a borrowed deck, but I still had fun! Ryan and I played tonight against each other and it was only slightly less disorienting than the last time, but it was a little easier knowing the deck and I still had fun. I think mulling correctly is important. I think you want to mull aggressively to get at least part of your combo or cards to get your combo. To play cEDH seriously I think you would have to study the meta of tiered cEDH decks to be able to combat them when playing yours and when playing EDH I’d rather be surprised at what people are playing vs seeing a commander and knowing it’s exact lines of play. I’m interested in casually playing cEDH when opportunities arise and I def see the appeal to it. Zack - We made sure that all 4 people knew exactly what we were signing up for, and I think that’s important. Also, I think most cEDH players genuinely DON’T want to pub stomp. Playing a crazy tuned cEDH deck versus non cEDH decks doesn’t seem like it would be much fun for the cEDH player We were playing socially, and having fun with folks during the games of cEDH that we played. Our thoughts about cEDH Main Topic - Our First Foray into cEDH What do you think about cEDH? Have you tried it? Let us know your experiences! Commander is many things, to many different people. cEDH is just one way to play this game, and it’s a valid way to play. EDH and cEDH are not mutually exclusive. PJ and Austin both had non-cEDH decks with them, and we had fun playing a few games of regular EDH before we dove into cEDH It’s really cool that there are so many different ways to play Magic, and even with Commander there are many ways to play. Magic is a great game, and everyone should be allowed to enjoy it the way they like Summary Thanks for watching! This topic is a little more on the psychological side of things, but I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment about why we play magic, and maybe why we like Commander chief amongst formats So, WHAT is Working for a Win? To me, it’s the notion that a close game or a hard fought game is more satisfying to win. I played a LOT of video games in the 80s. Super Mario Brothers Zelda Mega Man Metroid Ghosts n’ Goblins These games were TOUGH! If you didn’t grow up playing these games, and you’ve never gone back and played them you can look up ppl playing these games on youtube Zack’s game was X-Com UFO Defense In order to beat many of these types of games, it required a LOT of persistence, and banging your head against a wall in frustration. Many of the games didn’t have a save system, so you just had to play repeatedly until you got good enough to beat them. There weren't any walkthroughs you could look up on the internet. There wasn’t internet. Part of this may stem from growing up during the time that we grew up - That euphoric feeling when you finally DO best a video game. I remember I got in front of my TV and got my parents to take a “selfie” (ie polaroid) of me standing next to the credits when I beat the original Final Fantasy NES game. Zack - didn’t really get into beating games until college / post college when I beat the first few Halo games in a row as well as the first couple of Gears of War. It was an awesome feeling knowing these games were pretty difficult and there were a lot of times I just had to keep playing through to keep going. I remember getting soo mad at this on thing in GoW where I was behind like a counter and there was a dude on a cannon and two dude covering him and I’d jump out and die almost immediately. It took me two days to beat that I i remember being immensely proud when i did. So WHY do we like working for a win? Disclaimer: This next bit mostly applies to Multiplayer games. I think Magic players WANT a good game. I think most people would describe a good game as one that is CLOSE. Essentially, I think Magic players want to WORK for their WINs. (Audience, do you think this is true?) Even coming from a Standard / Modern grinder perspective games that are blowouts always felt like hollow victories. If a game is a good game, and a close game, it will often feel like a puzzle. We as humans like feeling smart, and so it’s only natural that we enjoy solving puzzles. Part of what makes Magic such an amazing game is that it continually generates new and unique puzzles for us to solve. Example story about Dana getting 6 alt-lose kills in-a-row in back-to-back games. Mirrodin Besieged: 2U Enchantment: As Mirrodin Besieged enters the battlefield, choose Mirran or Phyrexian. Getting good stories. Games where you have to Work for your Win often generate good stories. Another thing about us humans, we enjoy a good story. HOW does working for a win apply to Magic? Main Topic - Working for Wins Mirran — Whenever you cast an artifact spell, create a 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature token. Phyrexian — At the beginning of your end step, draw a card, then discard a card. Then, if there are fifteen or more artifact cards in your graveyard, target opponent loses the game. Atemsis, All-Seeing 3UUU 4 / 5 Flying Sphinx 2U tap: draw two cards then discard a card When Atemsis, all-seeing deals damage to player you may reveal your hand and if there’s 6 different mana costs in the hand that player loses the game Once in league i was playing niv mizzet and just went off. I don’t remember exactly what happened, but I remember everyone at the table was cheering for me to get the win and I did! Zack any good stories you want to share? Zack - This speaks to my philosophy on EDH where I don’t care if i win or loose, I just want to see crazy things happen! I want to have awesome stories to tell whether I win or lose! Also, I think that games with good stories are more satisfying for EVERYONE involved, win or lose. Ryan - I personally haven’t played very much cEDH cEDH players players probably do a fair amount of this, cause they have lots of interaction to fight through, so maybe their deck wins in the same way most games, but they are trying to balance WHEN to go for it, and when to leave up interaction for their opponents If you’re out there, and you like/play a lot of cEDH, holler at us, and let us know if this is correct, and how you might feel. cEDH (or Competative EDH) may really feel like this. This is why we have the talk to ensure everyone is playing an equally powered deck and thus have an equal chance at winning. Why we all want decks of similar power levels, so that each game is not just a cake walk. Cake walks don’t generate good stories. Ryan - Working for a win is part of why I personally don’t like playing a LOT of tutors. I do play some, but I often find I like to play more narrow tutors Working for a win is also probably a lot of the reason that I like playing with O.P.C. (cause it oftentimes makes the puzzle harder, or at least more interesting, AND the pieces of the puzzle change depending on WHO I’m playing against) Zack - working for a win for me is why i always like to play some convoluted combo in my decks, but not run tutors for them. I like the idea of having to fight to survive long enough to get the pieces assembled. Usually these are alt win cons. Magic is the best game ever, and the ability to work for our wins is probably a big part of what makes magic so good. Did we get this right? Do you enjoy working for your wins? Define: Saltiness Let’s be honest: Everyone gets Salty sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to avoid. But maybe by investigating the way we feel, we can get salty less often, and perhaps handle the times when we do get salty, a little better? Saltiness might be different for different people What makes Ryan and Zack Salty? If you think about, with a base 25% chance to win a game, cards that are making you lose the game, shouldn’t produce as much salt as they do Remind ourselves that we are playing a GAME and that it’s supposed to be fun! Take a moment to think about your mood. Is there something going on in your life that is making you more prone to getting salty? Maybe now is not the time to get into a competitive situation Run more answers Not take things personally. Realize if someone is acting different than they normally do, and if so, some of your normal behaviors might be perceived differently, so dial it back a bit? Have the talk to prevent saltiness Ryan - Often times I like to play a mono-red (or more of my just-for-fun decks). I go into the game not planning to win. I still play to win, but I don’t have the expectation of winning, so I usually don’t get salty Focus on having fun as much as winning What can we do about getting Salty? Are we getting salty more often than we should? Do you win more than 25% of the games? Do you often times find people groaning when you play specific cards? Are people not wanting to play with you? Are you a sore winner or loser? We like to turn the focus inwards, so we want to ask “Do we sometimes behave in a way that could contribute to other’s Salinity levels? Disclaimer: We don’t play against much MLD in our meta, so none of that made our lists https://edhrec.com/top/salt Also, EDHRec has a list of Salty cards, check it out here: secret Zack secret Ryan Ryan and Zack’s Top 8 Cards that make them want to be salty. Summary. This is a great game, with an amazing community, let’s all try to make it a little better, and get Salty less often, and try to be more understanding when people we play with get Salty. Be sure to pick an event that meets your expectations. Casual Commander - Recommend SCG Con or GP Vegas Main Event/Tournament Side Events - Limited/Modern/Standard/Commander Collect art/cards/meet MtG Celebrities Meet with friends and hang out (best part of MtG Events) Las Vegas has some amazing food and attractions Seattle his the home of the WotC and The Mox Boarding House Is it in a city that interests you? Choose an event that meets your budget and travel capabilities Costs can be shared - discuss more in budgeting section of notes Travel and Budget Make travel plans early. If flying use a site like Kayak to set a price alert to get the best deal. Advantage - Saves money/Share costs Disadvantage - Less privacy/Close Quarters/May be on other people’s schedules Not always close to the event No Maid Service Seattle Concierge Service had Umbrellas to loan out. Great source of info on where to eat and what to see No Concierge Service No room safe No Shuttle Service to and From/Airport No in hotel restaurant/bar Less amenities than a Hotel Air BnB tends to be cheaper, but: Advantages/Disadvantages of splitting Hotel/Air BnB costs Most events have at least 3 types of registration Main Event (Tournament) (Usually these days you are not allowed to register for a main event the day of the tournament) Limited SCG Con has a Commander Package Special access to a Commander Only Area Comes with other Extras such as playmats/pins/ and deck box Special/Commander On Demand (4 round) events Side Events Comes with some combination of the Main Event and/or Side Events with some added extras. Infinite Challenge Packages - Unlimited entries into a specific Side Event (not as common now) Extras typically include special access to a VIP party or head of the line privileges VIP Package Free/Cheap Events at GPs and MtG Cons Casual play where space is available GP Vegas is especially known for the large number of casual players Meeting artist Window Shopping Art Shows Panels (There were a couple of cool panels at GP Vegas this year. One on cosplay and how to make costumes. Another cool one was “Who’s Turn is it Anyway?” an improv show) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_7k_MDRu_o Special Side events sponsored by Content Creators. (Commanderin Cosplay Events) Play a game with your favorite MtG Celebrity Lines can be long for favorite Personalities Spellslinger Events You DO NOT have to buy any registration to enter and have fun at MtG event Pre-register for the events you want Preparing to Attend a GP/MtG event If flying: Pack cards and collection separate from luggage/clothing Do not check card collection. This may not be true for extremely budget airline ticket. You are typically allowed 1 carry on item and 1 personal item such as a backpack as long as it fits under the seat. What luggage are you allowed? Are there additional fees? What happens if you miss your flight? No moving seats No rebooking if you miss a flight if it is your fault First one to be forced off the flight if the flight is full Basic Economy tickets are very restricted. Read and Understand the terms of your ticket. Recommend getting the airlines Economy/Business Economy tickets (1 step above Basic Economy) For smaller regional airports, be there 2 hours a before the flight Large international hubs such as ATL or LAX, be there 3 hours before your departure REMEMBER: If your ticket says the plane leaves at 08:30, that means the doors close at 08:20. Once the doors on a plane are closed, you are not getting onto a plane. Expect to be delayed in at security due to your card collection. (This has happened to me just about every time! Mention JLK’s hilarious tweet: https://twitter.com/JoshLeeKwai/status/1053334228539064321 ) SHOW UP TO THE AIRPORT EARLY Going a long distance driving? Share the driving with a friend Plan for stops FuelLog Triptik Budget for gas (apps can help plan this) Waze Mapquest Plan for Traffic (apps can help with this) If Driving: Try to limit yourself to one personal item filled with MtG cards/decks It is easier to maintain physical security of your collection if it is easy to handle and store. Ryan - I try to REALLY challenge myself to only bring the top 5 Commander decks I’m interested in playing for the weeknd (and maybe also a brawl deck or two). Also, a good idea to bring different decks of varying power level, cause you don’t know who you will play against all weekend Do NOT overpack Travelling Be Friendly and Open to New Experiences No one owes you their time Everyone’s else may have different ideas of what is fun Be aware of your surroundings Do not leave your stuff unattended Hook your backpack/travel bag to a chair leg or to you Make sure zippers are not easily opened If you have a large and/or expensive collection you can get insurance for it It is a special rider that is added to your homeowners or renters insurance. It is cheap For extremely price items, insurance companies will want physical proof such as receipt of purchase or a picture of the item. Keeping a digital copy of your decks/collection online can help you during a claim. A police report is required to file an insurance claim Inform the event organizers, let them know if there are any unique items that may identify the collection If you are unfortunate and your collection is stolen at an event, immediately file a police report GET INSURANCE! Especially if you are in the Main Event On site food is typically overpriced and not the greatest quality. Bring Snacks and Water Ask random people to play with you Make a sign advertising Post to twitter with a picture of the table number you are at and the Hashtag for the event, e.g. #GPVegas Once started a game with someone’s casual deck - turned out to be a crazy Thassa combo deck that got Omniscience out on turn 4. Don’t get mad - be polite Find a group that you enjoy Make new friends Not all decks are made the same If you are just there to play Casual Commander Visit your favorite artist Card signing are typically $1 -$2 per signature Make sure to UNSLEEVE your cards while you are standing in line. Don’t be that person making everyone wait while you are unsleeving double-sleeved cards Be prepared with what you want. You are not the only person in line. Most artist love discussing their artwork, but be respectful of their time, especially if they are busy. It’s really cool to meet and have conversations with MtG Celebrities. Most of the ones I have met are super happy to sign a playmat, and you’ll come out with an amazing, one-of-a-kind souvenir It’s good to have a few different color of sharpies available Also, a playmat with a bright color background, makes sure signatures show up really well. (For example, the first playmat I made with the BW logo was on a black background, which just didn’t work out all that well). Blank playmats are often available at the tournament site Bring a playmat and some sharpies! Panels include everything from format specific discussions, comedy sketches, to instructional how to’s. Attend a Panel Most events are held in large cities Visit and experience the local sites Some really great after-hours experiences can be had, not limited to a great dinner out with some cool podcast hosts :-P Get out of the Convention Hall Events are more than Game Play Maintain your Personal and Physical Security Attending an Event Be prepared Manage Expectations Have Fun Summary Main Topic - How to make the most of a Big Magic Event Contact Info You can check us out at brotherswarcast.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/BrothersWarPodcast Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/brotherswarcast/ Official Page: https://www.facebook.com/brotherswarcast/ Facebook - You can email us directly at mail@brotherswarcast.com On twitter @brotherswarcast twitch.tv/greenegeek Ryan individually @greenegeek http://www.imdb.me/cjwostal CJ individually @Sudge1 Zack individually @z4ck38
