Are we nearing the end of the "Age of Print"? And, if so, what comes next? The concept of "the Gutenberg Parenthesis" suggests that the era of print – which began in the 15th century, when the printing press was developed by Johan Gutenberg, and extended to the 20th century, when radio and television muscled in – was a unique period for human communication. However, as this week's guest Jeff Jarvis argued in his book The Gutenberg Parenthesis: The Age of Print and Its Lessons for the Age of the Internet(Bloomsbury, 2023), our emphasis on literacy is historically situated in ways we may find difficult to recognize. After, all, there were not always authors, publishers, editors, or newspapers-- all of which are recent inventions, in the grand scheme of things-- and we may in fact be coming to the end of this age. Printing as a technology brought with it all manner of social, political, religious, and cultural effects that we now take for granted: for example, that we know who the "authorities" are, that grammar is fixed, that spelling must be consistent, or that our information must be curated for us. If the age of printing is coming to an end, and if the web is our "new" technology, then we might not be in the best position to understand its potentials and implications. Some contours of the closing of this parenthesis are coming into view, to be sure, but the full extent is not entirely clear. What did print allow and what did it deny? What does the end of print mean for the ways in which we find and digest information about our world? What happens to our ability to communicate complex and subtle ideas? Are we headed toward the promised land... or the apocalypse?Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-153-the-gutenberg-parenthesis-with-jeff-jarvis-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! We examine Paul's account in Acts 13 of Israel's history to his brethren, the Jews, and look to Israel's future. We note that God has periods in Israel's history from the time of the Exodus to the building of the Temple that he doesn't count. These are the time when Israel was temporarily "Lo-Ammi" or Not My People. We then note how things changed after the Acts Age with Paul's revelation of the Mystery of Ephesians 3. We are once again living in one of God's parenthesis. This time, however, the parenthesis will close with the bright appearing of the Lord (not the Second Coming and not with the so-called Rapture).

Day 254 Today's Reading: Revelation 16 One of the scariest movies I have ever seen was not in a theater but in a church. It was called A Thief in the Night, and it was circulating in the 1970s about the end times. I knew I wanted to be ready for the rapture, the second coming of Jesus. I remember leaving that church service as an elementary student knowing full well in my heart that I needed to be ready for that day. I went on to read Hal Lindsey's Late Great Planet Earth. At that time, they had it in a comic book form, and it was the clincher for me that I was going to be ready for Jesus to come back as a thief in the night. If things could get any worse for earth and humanity, Revelation 16 tells us it does in the great tribulation. As if seven trumpets of disaster were not enough for the planet, God unleashes seven bowls of wrath into the earth, from bodily affliction to polluting rivers and water. What's interesting is that in the midst of these wrathful bowls of God's judgment, one theme keeps being shouted by the angels inflicting the punishment: “Righteous art Thou O Holy One.” Their words remind us that God is not doing anything we don't deserve—this is a day of wrath and judgment after millennia of mercy and patience. These bowls are terrifying, as is men's response to the outpouring of God's wrath. Almost as many times as it says “God is righteous” after one of the bowls is poured out, it says as many times, “They did not repent so as to give Him glory.” How corrupt is man by this time in his history? The chapter ends with a name many of us are all familiar with. As if things can't get any worse, we are introduced to Armageddon, the place of the final battle on the planet. All that to say that in the midst of these horrific verses, a parenthetical statement shows up and stands alone in these passages because the verse speaks to the now and not to the future: “(‘Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.')” (Revelation 16:15). Verse 15 is a parenthetical life preserver for humanity now, right now before this chapter comes upon the planet with the wrath of God. When I say parenthetical, it's just a large word for parentheses, an insert of another thought, a little path from the original thought. But this is not a little diversion. This is deliverance from the wrath of God. It is as if John breaks from the vision and, in terror of what will happen, says to humanity, This doesn't have to happen to you. Stay awake and ready for the rapture. The parentheses show us John being overwhelmed and wanting to help us all. The parentheses bring us to the rapture, the second coming of Jesus. The apostle John says that Jesus will come like a thief in the night, but this is not only John's description of the second coming of Jesus. Jesus says in Matthew 24 that this is the way it happens. In 1 Thessalonians 5:2, Paul uses the thief-in-the-night image. And in 2 Peter 3:10, Peter also says He will come like a thief. The thief-in-the-night day is the rapture. The rapture is Jesus coming physically a second time to the earth, not to redeem it but to start judging it. The rapture has two important days attached to it: the wedding day and the judgment day. The wedding day is the celebration of the “born again” dead and living all going to heaven. It's the final call, our reward of heaven. And the Bible calls it a wedding-day celebration. The second day is judgment day, and it is God making all wrongs right. No one gets away with anything because of this day. Every person will be judged for what they have done. Hitler and Saddam Hussein will be there. Stalin and Castro. People from your city and my city and every pl

The age of print is a grand exception in history. For five centuries it fostered what some call print culture – a worldview shaped by the completeness, permanence, and authority of the printed word. As a technology, print at its birth was as disruptive as the digital migration of today. Now, as the internet ushers us past print culture, journalist Jeff Jarvis offers important lessons from the era we leave behind in The Gutenberg Parenthesis: The Age of Print and Its Lessons for the Age of the Internet (Bloomsbury, 2023). To understand our transition out of the Gutenberg Age, Jarvis first examines the transition into it. Tracking Western industrialized print to its origins, he explores its invention, spread, and evolution, as well as the bureaucracy and censorship that followed. He also reveals how print gave rise to the idea of the mass – mass media, mass market, mass culture, mass politics, and so on – that came to dominate the public sphere. What can we glean from the captivating, profound, and challenging history of our devotion to print? Could it be that we are returning to a time before mass media, to a society built on conversation, and that we are relearning how to hold that conversation with ourselves? Brimming with broader implications for today's debates over communication, authorship, and ownership, Jarvis' exploration of print on a grand scale is also a complex, compelling history of technology and power. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. When Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1450, it ushered in a modern era. Or so we thought. It was embraced and fought, but the very notion that print was supposed to simplify knowledge was turned on its head: instead, print multiplied knowledge, and often in unexpected ways.Jeff Jarvis, in his latest book The Gutenberg Parenthesis: The Age of Print and Its Lessons for the Age of the Internet, helps us understand how we're now at the modern equivalent of 1450 and that we need to rethink how we communicate. It will require us to give up on traditional thinking and forge new paths into the future, particularly with the advent of AI.SponsorsAugment is an online alternative MBA taught by the founders of Wikipedia, Shazam, Waze, YouTube and more. We discussed the parallels between that era and the current state of the internet and emerging technologies.  Our conversation emphasized the importance of patience, historical context, and ethical considerations when navigating the ever-evolving world of technology. By learning from the past and approaching emerging technologies with a human-centered perspective, we can better shape a positive future. -------------------------------------------------------------------   Here are my show notes:  The impact of the internet and AI on knowledge sharing. (0:09) The evolution of the internet and its impact on society with Jeff Jarvis. (5:17) Howard Stern's interviewing skills and journalism. (12:59) Work-life balance, office culture, and the future of print media. (17:14) The decline of magazines and potential for subscription-based models. (24:08) The future of advertising and media in the digital age. (28:59) The role of media in society, commoditization, and the importance of human connection. (34:50) Marketing, advertising, and technology. (40:57) The history and future of print media. (45:49) The impact of technology on society and the importance of humanity. (51:43) The impact of Gutenberg Printing Press and web3 technology. (59:00) Creativity, imagination, and marketing with Joseph Jaffe. (1:04:44)   -------------------------------------------------------------------   “Give me twenty-six soldiers of lead and I will conquer the world" - Johannes Gutenberg -------------------------------------------------------------------   If you like what you see, please subscribe to the show: bit.ly/subscribetotheshow Learn more about your ad choices. When the heart is warm with Love, the head is automatically cool.   Your response is chill.Your thoughts are chill.Sometimes, it's like they're saying- "Thank you for giving me this Love as a reminder of Your presence.Thank you for giving me this opportunity, this moment, to remember you."And you can take as many of these moments as  you need during the day. Every time you close your eyes and go within, that's the Sabbath. That's true rest. That's the absence of desire (aka the feeling of lack),and the presence of all things GoOD.
