This is a feel - good comeback story in several ways. My friend David Castro dealt with mental health issues in his early adulthood like so many of us, and ended up homeless, unemployed, and unemployable. But with a perserverance that he didn't even know he had, David fought his way back to being a productive member of society and then took up ultra running. This year David was one of only 12 people to complete the Badwater Ultra Cup, completing all 3 Badwater races. This was also a comeback in itself after David had a DNF at BW 135 in 2022. Check out David's Project 368 on Youtube. See link below.https://youtu.be/kGqV4ZV59l4?si=Ss25MXWY2d0lKrPS

Aaannnddd the list grows longer on #peoplewecantlistentoanymore. What is wrong with people? The more we look, it seems the fewer "artists'" work we can support, Die Antwoord being the latest. Of course, they have some pretty catchy songs, ugh. But that doesn't mean that they aren't terrible people, they are, and we've taken them off of our playlists now. This week, Ali talks about Die Antwoord, an alternative hip hop duo out of Cape Town, South Africa. Partners on stage and in life and sickness, Watkin Tudor “Ninja” Jones and Anri “Yolandi Vassir” du Toit, have been accused by several people, including their adopted son, Gabriel “Tokkie” du Preez, of sexual abuse. Tokkie came forward to expose the physical and sexual abuse perpetrated on him by Ninja and Yolandi, and how they essentially adopted him to make him a slave. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Questions around eating protein and carbs may sound basic however it's key you get it right! Interestingly the two of the most common questions we receive from listeners are: 1. How do I eat enough protein?2. What should my carb intake be?Join us today as a refresher on these two important macronutrients. If you have any questions you would like us to answer/discuss in this space then please get in touch with us at hello@runnershealthhub.com.A BIG thank you to our Show Sponsor AMAZING JANE ACTIVE WEAR. Please use discount code RHH10 for 10% off ALL purchases at www.amazingjane.com SHOW NOTES (05:20) Why is protein important for a mid-life female runner? When we exercise, muscle tissue breaks down and then the body activates muscle protein synthesis (MPS) to repair muscle. The ratio of MPS to MPB (breakdown) determines whether muscle tissues are built or lost. If MPS is higher than MP Breakdown, muscle growth is achieved. If MPB is higher than MPS, the opposite occurs. When we eat protein, it's digested and broken down into amino acids which are used for many functions including muscle rebuilding. (06:25)How much protein should mid-life women eat on a daily basis? Midlife women have specific requirements for protein intake. Research indicates that protein intake for women in this group is between 1.2g – 1.6g/kg/BW per day.We may not digest and absorb protein optimally as we age and ageing skeletal muscle has a reduced ability to respond to amino acid levels so that's why we require to consume more protein daily than younger women. As an example for a woman weighing 70kg – her daily protein requirements would be between 84g – 112g of protein per day.If you don't want to calculate your protein intake per day in grams then an easy approach is to have ¼ plate of protein at every meal so 3 times per day plus protein based snacks. (07:37) Should you eat all your protein in one meal or spread it across the day? There is conflicting research regarding whether there are benefits to spreading protein intake across the day or eating all your protein in one meal. Our view is it's best to spread your protein across your meals and some snacks, we feel that digestion will be more effective in this way and as we know it'll also support blood sugar balance and therefore even energy levels and body composition too.OUR MANTRA is to eat protein with every meal or snack not only to promote MPS but also to manage blood sugar as protein slows down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. The key is to be consistent. Personally I'd never have a meal that didn't include protein. (10:35) An example of daily protein intake is you're an omnivore like Aileen. (11:28)An example of daily protein intake is you're an vegetarian like Karen. (12:48)Plant based protein sources for vegans. We're sharpening our knives with the crew of the Revenge and discovering how Brian Cox is able to empathise with unsympathetic characters. Actor and trained fencer, Vico Ortiz tells BW + BL how tending bar helped them master knife spinning in two weeks in order to play Jim, a non-binary, knife throwing pirate in Our Flag Means Death, a queer normative rom com based on the real life pirates Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate. And Brian Cox shares how he finds his motivation to play unsympathetic (terrible) characters on stage and screen. Brian spoke to BW in 2022 ahead of an Australian book tour.
We're gasping at the end of Harry and Meghan's Spotify deal, checking in on the Hollywood writers strike and worried about Miranda on And Just Like That. Following news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's $20 million content deal with Spotify has ended after just one season of a podcast, senior executive and podcaster Bill Simmons lashed the couple as "f**king grifters." Is this fair? Screenwriter and playwright Anchuli Felicia King gives an update on the WGA writers strike, which has brought US television production to a standstill for nearly two months. AFK is a writer on HBO's adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer-prize winning novel, The Sympathiser starring Robert Downey Jr and Sandra Oh. And — it's another chaotic week for TV reviews as (spoiler alert) BW and BL take apart the first two episodes of season two of And Just Like That.

We're talking happily-ever-after stories with Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, stars of Disney's The Little Mermaid, and Julia Quinn, author of the Bridgerton romance novels. Disney's live action remake of its animated classic The Little Mermaid is campy and entertaining, but why this story again, and why now? Ben puts the question to Halle, who plays Ariel, and Melissa, who plays Ursula. With its multiracial (and hot) casting and steamy sex scenes, Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series found new and enthusiastic audiences via Shondalands's hit screen adaptations for Netflix. BW and Rudi Bremer talk to Julia about collaborating with Shonda Rhimes on the new Queen Charlotte series and novels, and what she's learned about writing non white and queer characters.

Gregory Crewdson's photographs have entered the American visual lexicon, taking their place alongside the paintings of Edward Hopper and the films of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch as indelible evocations of a silent psychological interzone between the everyday and the uncanny. Often working with a large team, Crewdson typically plans each image with meticulous attention to detail, orchestrating light, color, and production design to conjure dreamlike scenes infused with mystery and suspense. While the small-town settings of many of Crewdson's images are broadly familiar, he is careful to avoid signifiers of identifiable sites and moments, establishing a world outside time.Born in Brooklyn, New York, Crewdson is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is now director of graduate studies in photography. He lives and works in New York and Massachusetts. In a career spanning more than three decades, he has produced a succession of widely acclaimed bodies of work, from Natural Wonder (1992–97) to Cathedral of the Pines (2013–14). Beneath the Roses (2003–08), a series of pictures that took nearly ten years to complete—and which employed a crew of more than one hundred people—was the subject of the 2012 feature documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, by Ben Shapiro.Crewdson's emblematic series Twilight (1998–2002) ushers the viewer into a nocturnal arena of alienation and desire that is at once forbidding and darkly magnetic. In these lush photographs, the elements intervene unexpectedly and alarmingly into suburban domestic space. Crewdson's psychological realism is tempered in these images by their heightened theatricality, while themes of memory and imagination, the banal and the fantastic, function in concert with a narrative of pain and redemption that runs through American history and its picturing.Cathedral of the Pines, which was first exhibited at Gagosian in New York in 2016, depicts unnamed figures situated in the forests around the town of Becket, Massachusetts. In scenes that evoke nineteenth-century American and European history paintings, the works' subjects appear traumatized by mysterious events or suspended in a fugue state. Working with a small crew to maintain an intimate and immediate atmosphere, the artist also used people close to him as models. But even once we know who “plays” the protagonists, their actions remain cryptic and their relationships unclear. “There are no answers here,” states the artist, “only questions.” The 2018–19 series An Eclipse of Moths is set amid down-at-heel postindustrial locations including an abandoned factory and a disused taxi depot. They serve as backdrops for Crewdson's enigmatic dramas of decay and potential rebirth.Gregory's most recent body of work, Eveningside (2021-2022), was shot in B&W and formed the centrepiece of a retrospective trilogy of work, alongside Cathedral of the Pines and An Eclipse of Moths, in a major exhibition at Galerie D'Italia in Turin from October 2022 until January 2023. A older series called Fireflies (1996) was also included as ‘both connective tissue and counterpoint…'. A book, also entitled Eveningside, was published to accompany the show. On episode 198, Gregory discusses, among other things:The three phases of his creative processWhy he chose B&W for EveningsideHis transition from film to digitalThe abiding themes in his workHow every artist has one story to tellFalling in love with photography from day oneHis love of moviesThe significance of nudity in his workAllowing for ‘a certain kind of unexpected beauty and mystery' to come out of the processWindowsNever being quite satisfied with the resultsThe relationship between true beauty and sadnessThe act of making a picture being an act of seperation from the worldThe way in which the subjects of his work always seem disconnected and alone…And how that references the act of making the picture.ReferencedThe Night of the HunterThe Last Picture ShowMankRomaRick SandsLaurie Simmonds Gallery | Instagram“I've said many times, I feel like every artist has one story to tell and that central story is told through an artists lifetime, and when you come of age in your early twenties you're confronted with movies and artwork that you love or you hate and you're defined in a certain way as a kind of aesthetic being, and then you spend your life sort of working out those things, and trying to find yourself within that frame of influences.”
The All Things Testosterone podcast is a product of the TRT Community. We are the world's largest online support system for men and women undergoing Testosterone Replacement Therapy, or "Patients Helping Patients." Join our FREE Facebook group below! On today's episode we discuss the following: Semaglutide (Wegovy) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) TRT Mental Health Benefits Anxiety TRT Community Post - I posted this short blog, about weight loss drugs in the TRT Community Facebook group. The first sentence was something like, "Losing weight can be an incredibly difficult endeavor…" A fellow responded and informed me that losing weight is not difficult and a conversation ensued. Just because something has a step process you can follow, doesn't make it easy. I could rebuild a transmission with the proper instructions, but there's a reason specialty shops exist. Have you ever had a pack of clutch plates laying on a work bench??? Topic One: Semaglutide & Tirzepitide Semaglutide - it's sold as Ozempic and Rybelsus for DM treatment and Wegovy for weight loss. Brain uses hormones to regulate functions, including digestion and metabolism Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1 class hormones GLP-1, or glucagon like peptide-1 help regulate digestion and metabolism The more GLP-1, the more full you are Side effects - Diarrhea, Nausea, Constipation, vomiting Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) currently approved for DM treatment Same GLP-1 effects as Semaglutide Also effect on GIP (glucose=dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) GIP enhances the action of GLP-1, which tells the brain to stop eating. The way I think about it is like this: Semaglutide, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy - it's like having a fellow in your brain telling you to stop eating. Tirzepatide or Mounjaro is like have 2 fellows in your brain TELLING you to stop eating. The most effective weight loss medication ever made available with an average weigh tloss of 22.5% over the course of a year. Personal experience - started taking Semaglutide about 7 months ago. Lost about 10% BW in a few months and plateaued. Started Tirzepatide this month. Not much side effects. Feeling bloated/full most of the time Tirzepatide highly effective for weight loss - PubMed (nih.gov) Facebook Questions: Did TRT improve your anxiety and confidence? Maybe is the fact that I'm autistic, but all my life Ive been prone to being anxious when interacting with others regardless of how many times I do it. I'm 38 and even if I'm “relaxed” there is still a “slight” anxiety underneath that's probably unseen by others yet I feel it. Maybe I'm just a nervous person but I have noticed my anxiety has gotten worse compared to 10 years ago. I feel more confident than when I was younger from life experience and maturity but still anxious. I'm also more prone to being fearful than some but I fight it and contain it. I wish I was like those guys seem to have no fear and have nerves of steel. That's life but who knows maybe i have a bigger weiner or higher IQ than them. So many folks focus on the physical improvement aspects of TRT. The mental health benefits are what I'm most passionate about. Before TRT - I was anxious daily, no confidence, counting hours before I had to do things like go to work, afraid to speak up, engage people in social situations, seeking validation from other people and manipulating them into providing you with value. I was super impatient. Here's a quick video of my after experience Before and After Testosterone Replacement Therapy Thanks for listening!
