Four-Color Kethis broke Standard at the most recent Mythic Championship Qualifier Weekend. Only a few people played the new combo deck, with both Ondrej Strasky and Stanislav Cifka managing 5-1s on Day 2 to qualify for MC5. With those impressive results, it seems the Czech is in the mail! Eh, get it? They’re bringin’ Kethis back. Well regardless, overly complicated graveyard-based iterative combo decks and StanCifka go together like Erin and the “block” button. But it kind of came out of nowhere, so tell me: what’s the next big surprise deck to take the metagame by storm?

Be sure to pick an event that meets your expectations. Casual Commander - Recommend SCG Con or GP Vegas Main Event/Tournament Side Events - Limited/Modern/Standard/Commander Collect art/cards/meet MtG Celebrities Meet with friends and hang out (best part of MtG Events) Las Vegas has some amazing food and attractions Seattle his the home of the WotC and The Mox Boarding House Is it in a city that interests you? Choose an event that meets your budget and travel capabilities Costs can be shared - discuss more in budgeting section of notes Travel and Budget Make travel plans early. If flying use a site like Kayak to set a price alert to get the best deal. Advantage - Saves money/Share costs Disadvantage - Less privacy/Close Quarters/May be on other people’s schedules Not always close to the event No Maid Service Seattle Concierge Service had Umbrellas to loan out. Great source of info on where to eat and what to see No Concierge Service No room safe No Shuttle Service to and From/Airport No in hotel restaurant/bar Less amenities than a Hotel Air BnB tends to be cheaper, but: Advantages/Disadvantages of splitting Hotel/Air BnB costs Most events have at least 3 types of registration Main Event (Tournament) (Usually these days you are not allowed to register for a main event the day of the tournament) Limited SCG Con has a Commander Package Special access to a Commander Only Area Comes with other Extras such as playmats/pins/ and deck box Special/Commander On Demand (4 round) events Side Events Comes with some combination of the Main Event and/or Side Events with some added extras. Infinite Challenge Packages - Unlimited entries into a specific Side Event (not as common now) Extras typically include special access to a VIP party or head of the line privileges VIP Package Free/Cheap Events at GPs and MtG Cons Casual play where space is available GP Vegas is especially known for the large number of casual players Meeting artist Window Shopping Art Shows Panels (There were a couple of cool panels at GP Vegas this year. One on cosplay and how to make costumes. Another cool one was “Who’s Turn is it Anyway?” an improv show) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_7k_MDRu_o Special Side events sponsored by Content Creators. (Commanderin Cosplay Events) Play a game with your favorite MtG Celebrity Lines can be long for favorite Personalities Spellslinger Events You DO NOT have to buy any registration to enter and have fun at MtG event Pre-register for the events you want Preparing to Attend a GP/MtG event If flying: Pack cards and collection separate from luggage/clothing Do not check card collection. This may not be true for extremely budget airline ticket. You are typically allowed 1 carry on item and 1 personal item such as a backpack as long as it fits under the seat. What luggage are you allowed? Are there additional fees? What happens if you miss your flight? No moving seats No rebooking if you miss a flight if it is your fault First one to be forced off the flight if the flight is full Basic Economy tickets are very restricted. Read and Understand the terms of your ticket. Recommend getting the airlines Economy/Business Economy tickets (1 step above Basic Economy) For smaller regional airports, be there 2 hours a before the flight Large international hubs such as ATL or LAX, be there 3 hours before your departure REMEMBER: If your ticket says the plane leaves at 08:30, that means the doors close at 08:20. Once the doors on a plane are closed, you are not getting onto a plane. Expect to be delayed in at security due to your card collection. (This has happened to me just about every time! Mention JLK’s hilarious tweet: https://twitter.com/JoshLeeKwai/status/1053334228539064321 ) SHOW UP TO THE AIRPORT EARLY Going a long distance driving? Share the driving with a friend Plan for stops FuelLog Triptik Budget for gas (apps can help plan this) Waze Mapquest Plan for Traffic (apps can help with this) If Driving: Try to limit yourself to one personal item filled with MtG cards/decks It is easier to maintain physical security of your collection if it is easy to handle and store. Ryan - I try to REALLY challenge myself to only bring the top 5 Commander decks I’m interested in playing for the weeknd (and maybe also a brawl deck or two). Also, a good idea to bring different decks of varying power level, cause you don’t know who you will play against all weekend Do NOT overpack Travelling Be Friendly and Open to New Experiences No one owes you their time Everyone’s else may have different ideas of what is fun Be aware of your surroundings Do not leave your stuff unattended Hook your backpack/travel bag to a chair leg or to you Make sure zippers are not easily opened If you have a large and/or expensive collection you can get insurance for it It is a special rider that is added to your homeowners or renters insurance. It is cheap For extremely price items, insurance companies will want physical proof such as receipt of purchase or a picture of the item. Keeping a digital copy of your decks/collection online can help you during a claim. A police report is required to file an insurance claim Inform the event organizers, let them know if there are any unique items that may identify the collection If you are unfortunate and your collection is stolen at an event, immediately file a police report GET INSURANCE! Especially if you are in the Main Event On site food is typically overpriced and not the greatest quality. Bring Snacks and Water Ask random people to play with you Make a sign advertising Post to twitter with a picture of the table number you are at and the Hashtag for the event, e.g. #GPVegas Once started a game with someone’s casual deck - turned out to be a crazy Thassa combo deck that got Omniscience out on turn 4. Don’t get mad - be polite Find a group that you enjoy Make new friends Not all decks are made the same If you are just there to play Casual Commander Visit your favorite artist Card signing are typically $1 -$2 per signature Make sure to UNSLEEVE your cards while you are standing in line. Don’t be that person making everyone wait while you are unsleeving double-sleeved cards Be prepared with what you want. You are not the only person in line. Most artist love discussing their artwork, but be respectful of their time, especially if they are busy. It’s really cool to meet and have conversations with MtG Celebrities. Most of the ones I have met are super happy to sign a playmat, and you’ll come out with an amazing, one-of-a-kind souvenir It’s good to have a few different color of sharpies available Also, a playmat with a bright color background, makes sure signatures show up really well. (For example, the first playmat I made with the BW logo was on a black background, which just didn’t work out all that well). Blank playmats are often available at the tournament site Bring a playmat and some sharpies! Panels include everything from format specific discussions, comedy sketches, to instructional how to’s. Attend a Panel Most events are held in large cities Visit and experience the local sites Some really great after-hours experiences can be had, not limited to a great dinner out with some cool podcast hosts :-P Get out of the Convention Hall Events are more than Game Play Maintain your Personal and Physical Security Attending an Event Be prepared Manage Expectations Have Fun Summary Main Topic - How to make the most of a Big Magic Event Contact Info You can check us out at brotherswarcast.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/BrothersWarPodcast Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/brotherswarcast/ Official Page: https://www.facebook.com/brotherswarcast/ Facebook - You can email us directly at mail@brotherswarcast.com On twitter @brotherswarcast twitch.tv/greenegeek Ryan individually @greenegeek http://www.imdb.me/cjwostal CJ individually @Sudge1 Zack individually @z4ck38
The first guest in Season 4 is the Senior Design Director of Magic the Gathering: Aaron Forsythe! I had the wonderful privilege of interviewing Aaron live at GP Vegas 2018. Special thanks to Channel Fireball and Wizards of the Coast for setting it up. It’s Magic’s 25 year anniversary and I’m excited to listen to Aaron share lots of cool stories about Magic’s history and his own life playing Magic. It’s always insightful to be able to speak with someone that’s lived through the rich history of Magic: The Gathering. I hope you enjoy my special live conversation with Aaron Forsythe. Hey everyone! It’s great to be back! I’ve had a very busy and productive summer making videos, hosting a Magic: The Gathering themed Local Game Show presented by Card Kingdom, and recording a lot of new interviews. I’m excited to share them with you. We’ve got a wonderful lineup of guests this season! Aaron Forsythe, Meghan and Maria of Good Luck High Five, Reuben Bresler of Magic Mics, cosplayer Ashlen Rose, GP Champion Jessica Estephan, Hall of Famer Seth Manfield, and legendary MTG pros such as David Williams, Matt Sperling, and more guests that you’ll be fascinated to hear interviews from. James, Cameron and Nelson chat about Core 2019 and we quickly recap our time at GP Vegas.
Old School degenerate Chris Mason and I go over the historic Beta booster draft from Grand Prix Las Vegas in real time as it unfolds before our tear-filled eyes.
We're back at GP Las Vegas! As always, I'm asking Three Questions to anyone willing to answer them, whether they're a listener, judge, pro player, innocent bystander, or just someone that catches my eye. The real purpose of this show, like most of the stuff I do, is to entertain you – the listener. Rather than asking the same old questions that everyone else does, I'm looking to give you a slightly more off-the-wall look into these Magic players and judges and what-have-you by catching them off guard and putting them on the spot. This episode covers the middle part of Day 2, which was Sunday. I was in a mad rush to make sure I found as many people as I could, and it shows. The episode kicks off with well-known MTG cosplayer Christine Sprankle and never slows down! I've got a few judges: Bryan Prillaman (just hours before he went L3), Cluze, John Alderfer, and the very intimidating Sheldon Menery. I talked to several members of the MTG community at large like Lauren Lee, Jonathan Richmond (Norbert!), Spencer Howland, and Jason Alt. I found a few more pros I hadn't bothered yet too: Willy Edel, James Searles, Reid Duke, and Andrew Cuneo. And finally, I ran into a couple masses of degenerates including but not limited to: Slick Jagger, Matty Studios, GingerItalian, Time_Elemental, Sup Stevie, and the incomparable Kevy Metal. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the last batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Vegas coming soon! This episode covers the end of Day 1 and the beginning of Day 2! My trusty digital recorder was perfectly timed, not running out of storage space until the end of the night on Saturday. This episode I snagged a lot of awesome people to interview, including some high-level judges (including former Judgecast host Sean Catanese), a YouTuber from Top and Go Productions, Pro Tour Historian and (sorta) podcaster Brian David-Marshall, Director of OP for WotC Helene Bergeot, and Magic entertainers Reuben Bresler and Nathan Holt! Of course I hit some big pro players too - LSV, Ben Stark, David Ochoa, and Shahar Shenhar! I'm pretty sure I left a few out, sorry about that. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the next batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Vegas coming soon! This time around I'm talking to listeners, high-level judges, Twitter people, and an angel that was walking around the building. I've also got the writer and one of the actors from Top Decking, a live-action series on YouTube that I recommend you watch. Oh, I talked to a few pro players too - Roberto Gonzalez, Alexander Hayne, Sam Black, and Melissa DeTora. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! I enjoyed asking people Three Questions at GP Pittsburgh so much that the listeners decided to chip in and send me to Vegas to do it again! This episode covers the second bit of Day 1, from round 3 until round...5 or 6, I can't really tell. This time I'm talking to a variety of people from the Magic community, starting with Matt Jones, writer for HipstersOfTheCoast.com. Then there's a judge with seriously awesome hair, a Hall of Famer and a probable future one (Jensen and Turtenwald) and Josh Utter-Leyton and his crew. Also on this episode are commentator and podcaster Marshall Sutcliffe, current R&D intern and pro player Jackie Lee, the man behind CMDR Decks Uriah Oxford, everyone's favorite Twitter angel Heather Dawn, plus a handful of listeners as usual! This episode covers Friday of GP Vegas. I stood in a line for a ridiculous amount of time, survived it, and started asking questions. I finally got to meet Jeremey Schofield face to face, which is good since he was the reason I made it to Vegas. Other highlights were the Voice of the Pro Tour Rich Hagon, everyone's favorite silent Canadian assassin KYT, and a couple of pro players you might know about, David Williams and The Great One himself, Bob Maher. This is the first episode after Chewie got back from his listener-supplied trip to Grand Prix Las Vegas! So of course, he has to talk at great length about GP Vegas. Because it was amazing in so many ways. Like, SO many ways. So I'm gonna go ahead and apologize for how long that took, because apparently no one realized just how long we went on about it.Then there's all the other stuff! Since Grand Prix Las Vegas just completely destroyed the record for largest Magic event ever, it is a fine time to revisit the previous holder of that record, GP Charlotte. Of course Chewie was there, armed as always with his trusty digital recorder, his wits, and spare batteries. He and his fellow dorks concocted this edition of the Three Questions once they arrived in Charlotte, sitting in Buffalo Wild Wings actually. Once the Questions were decided, all that was left was to go out and hit people over the head with them. And hit them he did! This show represents those that answered the questions on Sunday, which was Day 2 of GP Charlotte. Judges, pros, local players, and even innocent bystanders all heard the questions and answered them.Stay tuned for the next edition of Three Questions, coming straight from Grand Prix Pittsburgh and after that, the immense amount of content from GP Vegas!Music: The Journey Continues (Intermission) by Kazunaka Yamane (from Double Dragon)Your host: ChewieTwitter: @TheManaPoolEmail: chewie@mtgcast.com
On this episode, of course we're gonna talk about From the Vault: Twenty. I mean, duh. Then we go on into more esoteric topics. A listener known as Andrew Hunt (Magnor Criol on the forums) supplied us with six 60-card casual decks to talk about. And we do. At great length. These are really pretty cool. We go over each one, poking at the pros and cons, bouncing potential modifications off of each other, stuff like that. The links to the TappedOut pages are below. Then we have a slight interruption. Jeremey Schofield (@J_Schofield) pops in to try to get money out of you! Not for himself, but for Chewie! Jeremey has spearheaded an operation to get Chewie a plane ticket to Grand Prix Las Vegas in June. If you remember, GP Vegas is going to be Modern Masters Limited, which is most likely going to be completely amazing. The GP itself is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever. So if you'd like to chip in and help, all you have to do is click here: http://www.gofundme.com/2309p0 *Chewie note: By the time this was ready to be posted, we had already reached the goal of $500! But if you still want to send in more, go right ahead. Any excess funds will be split between beefing up the prize pool for the raffle-type thing he's doing and the rest will be donated to the MTGCast Network to keep it up and running. Pretty cool huh?
