Today's program features both a newly-recorded interview and an interview from the archives- both concerning the so-called Red Scare in the years following World War Two. First is New York Times reporter Clay Risen talking about his book "Red Scare: Blacklists, McCarthyism, and the Making of Modern America." The book examines the nature of the Red Scare, the way it extended beyond the infamous congressional hearings to involve many facets of American life, and the reverberations of it to the present day. After that, from 2021, comes an excerpt from a conversation with best-selling author Larry Tye, talking about his book "Demogogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy." McCarthy is the figure most vividly remembered from the Red Scare, but Tye was able to gain access to McCarthy's personal archives to paint an exceptionally clear portrait of the man.
For every radicalization there's an equal and opposite radicalization. What happened to the supposed silent moderate majority? What does it mean if they're effectively dead? Emerson wrote about arguing with the "retained attorneys". When it comes to political discourse, and justifying political violence, are we in a race to the bottom? And are we debating or just litigating? What happens when post hoc rationalization rules? We're two months into Trump's term and the 2028 campaign has already begun. Are you ready for the AOC Era? Do you think the Democrats are hopelessly lost and destined to go the way of the Whigs? None other than Trump and the Republicans themselves offer a sobering warning. Mock AOC at your own risk; beware the bartender demagogue. The pandemic struck 5-years ago already! Did they deceive the public "for our own good," was the loss of institutional trust worth it? What happens next time there's a *real* emergency? Will anyone listen? Like it? Share, rate, review! Hate it? Send it someone you hate more! Jennifer Mercieca is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University and the author of the book Demagogue for President: The Rhetorical Genius of Donald Trump. So we talked about Trump. Is he an existential threat to American democracy? Is he truly willing to use the Justice Department, the FBI, and other state institutions to target his opponents? Will the U.S. government resemble a form of oligarchy, and will the administration be led by figures like Elon Musk or Vice President JD Vance? Can the Democrats learn something from Trump about how to connect with voters? Listen to our conversation. And if you enjoy what I do, please support me on Ko-fi! They discuss how JD Vance will play a huge part in Trump's presidency, how did America get here, and where are we headed next? For their Politics-related "Suggestion Box", Madeline, Emilio, and Julian invite social media professional and film lover Maggie Hill to a conversation about Elia Kazan's 'A Face In The Crowd', a film from 1957 whose observations about television, mass persuasion, and political ambition seem more relevant today than ever. Emilio starts the discussion with how the filmmakers' personal and professional experiences with the Hollywood blacklist most likely influenced this cynical look at American institutions. Madeline notes how the film's central figure Lonesome Rhodes is wildly different than the wholesome persona the actor who plays him, Andy Griffith, would eventually cultivate on his beloved eponymous TV show. Julian sees the ripples of this film in several other films about fame and personal connection. Maggie sees the film's female lead Marcia and her ambition as the skeleton key to a deeper understanding of the film. These, and many other observations, ground a discussion about 'A Face In The Crowd' and its place among the more interesting and enduring films to emerge from the 1950s Hollywood. Maggie Hill is a writer/director/producer whose thoughtful content about media can be found on the socials: @themaggiehillIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. From June 29, 2020: Jack Goldsmith sat down with Eric Posner, the Kirkland & Ellis Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, and the author of the new book, "The Demagogue's Playbook: The Battle for American Democracy from the Founders to Trump." They discussed why demagogues are a characteristic threat in democracies, how the founders of the U.S. Constitution tried to ensure elite control and prevent a demagogue from becoming president, how these safeguards weakened over time and how Donald Trump's demagoguery helped him win election as president. They also explored how Posner's perception of Trump as a threat to American democracy fits with his writings in support of a powerful president. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 30, 2024 is: demagogue DEM-uh-gahg noun A demagogue is a political leader who tries to get support by making use of popular prejudices, as well as by making false claims and promises and using arguments based on emotion rather than reason. // His opponent called him a bigoted demagogue for demonizing those who don't intend to vote for him. See the entry > Examples: “You need an internal guidance system for making decisions. Without one, your choices become heavily influenced by external forces such as peers, television, and demagogues.” — Tom Muha, The Capital (Annapolis, Maryland), 2 Oct. 2021 Did you know? When the ancient Greeks used dēmagōgós (from dêmos, meaning “people,” and -agōgos, “leading”) they meant someone good—a leader who used outstanding oratorical skills to further the interests of the common people. The first known use of demagogue in English comes from the introduction to Thomas Hobbes's 1629 translation of a text by the ancient Greek historian Thucydides: “It need not be doubted, but from such a master Thucydides was sufficiently qualified, to have become a great demagogue, and of great authority with the people.” Alas, the word quickly took a negative turn; within decades it was being used to refer to someone who uses powers of persuasion to sway and mislead.
If we are to take Donald J. Trump seriously (and at this stage it's surely a fool's errand not to), then the rule of law and democracy are on the line if (when) he becomes the Republican nominee for 2024. What role will the former President's many many legal woes play in the coming months? A clearer picture is emerging after testimony for the prosecution wrapped in the civil fraud trial against Trump and his adult sons in their roles at the helm of the Trump Organization in New York City this past week. Then, during a Lincoln Day address in 1950, Joseph McCarthy told an audience that he had a list of 205 communists working in the government. Within days, he was a household name. McCarthy started "investigating" suspected communists in the American government, focusing on the US State Department. Along the way, he brought in a young lawyer named Roy Cohn. Cohn was already known for his work sending Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to the electric chair. Now, he and McCarthy bullied and cajoled during private hearings. Being labeled a communist, or even a suspected communist could ruin a person's career. People committed suicide rather than face their scrutiny. Their reign lasted four years, ending in the televised broadcasts of the Army-McCarthy hearings in which a lawyer asked if McCarthy had any decency. That was pretty much it for McCarthy. But Roy Cohn went on to have a well-connected career, providing legal services for the mob and Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News. He also became a mentor to a young real estate mogul named Donald Trump. Famous people like Andy Warhol attended his birthday party at Studio 54. Cohn died of AIDS, something that was killing gay men rapidly in the 1980s, though he denied he ever had it. This is the story of two men allowed to prey on the fears of the American people for their own gain. One fell hard, the other found himself fighting against his own people. In this episode, Chris interviews Larry Tye, author of the book "Demagogue". He's also the author of "Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend" and "Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon". Sources: "Demagogue" by Larry Tye Helpful article about the Rosenbergs Article about Klaus Fuchs McCarthy's speech in Wheeling, WV New York Times, February 23, 1954. Pages 16-17 “Transcript of General Zwicker's Testimony Before the McCarthy Senate Subcommittee” Video from Army-McCarthy hearings (forward to the last 20 minutes if you want to jump to the stuff I used) The guest list for Roy Cohn's birthday at Studio 54 Discussion Questions: Why do we love demagogues? Who are other demagogues in American history? The threat of communists in the government in the 1950s is sometimes downplayed. Do you think it was a real concern? McCarthy ran for Congress in an illegal way while still in the Marines. How do you feel about that? Roy Cohn sometimes went against his own people, claiming that gay people did not deserve equal rights. What might have been his motivation? Do you see any crossover between McCarthy, Cohn, and Donald Trump? Cohn died of AIDs in the 1980s when the disease was at its peak. Why might he have wanted to keep his illness a secret? Date: August 23, 2023Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S5: E4 - Paul Noyola - East Texas Pickin and PatrolingBIO:Around 13 years old, I taught myself to play guitar - singing my favorite tunes comforted me during a tumultuous time in my life. Within a year, I began writing songs and performing at events around East Texas. In 1995, I was 15 and was hired by a local country club to perform for 4 hours every Friday night for several years. I also formed & fronted The Tailor Made Band beginning in 1995, touring regionally, playing old country, western swing tunes, and several songs that I had written. During those early teenage years, I headlined local festivals & performed at events with Leann Rimes, Mark Chesnutt, Wayne Toups, and Johnny Gimble, and was mentored in songwriting by Grammy Award winner Don Rollins. When I turned 20, I felt the need to get into a career and became a police officer, which I devoted all my attention to for about 5 years until I had the urge to perform music again. The freedom and power of rock music were a big influence on me from an early age - with some of my favorites being the Beatles, Led Zepplin, and 90's grunge. I had always wanted to do a rock project, so in 2005 I fronted a 4 piece rock band called Demagogue and for the next two years, we wrote and performed our music around Texas and Louisiana, releasing the EP Passage To Repute and album Fight The Fate. The bassist for the band was Matt Sebastian, who is currently performing around the Houston area. The drummer for Demagogue is now a well-known session drummer and studio owner in the Nashville area, Grady Saxman with Saxman Studios.A few years later, I fronted another rock project called Noyola and during its 3-year run, we released the album Sow Tomorrow and regionally toured the Texas and Louisiana area. After the band Noyola dissolved around 2012, I got busy with life - working on my businesses, traveling, and getting married. In 2022, I got back to recording and writing, with the release of a new single called Holding On To Hope in March 2023 and Claim To Be in June 2023. The music I create now has mellowed and matured a bit - all of the genres that I love and have performed over the years have melded together to style the new songs I'm writing and performing - but I do still love performing some of the rock songs I wrote years ago.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Social Media:http://www.paulnoyola.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Heartland's Tim Benson is joined by Fred Litwin to discuss his book Oliver Stone's Film-Flam: The Demagogue of Dealey Plaza. They chat about what Oliver Stone has been up to on the JFK assassination conspiracy beat since his blockbuster 1991 film. They also chat about how much we should trust the Warren Commission report, what happened with Kennedy's autopsy, the chain of custody of the bullet found at Parkland Hospital, and how the unsuccessful prosecution of Clay Shaw for Kennedy's murder by New Orleans DA Jim Garrison was little more than homophobic persecution. In 2015, he released Conservative Confidential about his move from left-wing anti- nuclear activist to Conservative Party campaigner. Fred joins TCT today to talk about why The JFK Conspiracy shouldn't be taken seriously, based on the evidence alone. Why Oliver Stone is reaching and has made a SECOND attempt to drum up theories about the death of JFK for personal gain and profit. How Oliver Stone's theories have damaged and destroyed lives and how he uses unreliable sources. and, how if you study the documentation from the Warren Commission and it's players. it will unfold all the truths behind the assassination... It's that time. When a Republican Congress and a Democratic president face off over an archaic procedure known as the debt ceiling. You've probably heard about it, so we decided to do a deep dive to understand what's going on in the next few weeks and months as the radical Republicans in the House hold the world's economy hostage to their demands for cutting Medicare Social Security and defense. To dig into this topic we turn to one of the sharpest voices on the intersection of economics and politics, Catherine Rampell, a syndicated columnist based at the Washington Post. In this installment of Best Of The Gist, we start with a podcast extra we held over from our Thursday interview with Professor of Rhetoric Jennifer Mercieca, author of Demagogue for President: The Rhetorical Genius of Donald Trump, about how the former President uses language as a weapon. And then, in honor of Boris Johnson's removal from the UK Prime Minister role, we listen back to Mike's 2016 interview with Financial Times columnist Ed Luce conducted shortly after Boris was named UK Foreign Minister. Luce is the author of Time to Start Thinking: America and the Spectre of Decline, and he shared some interesting insights about Boris as he rose to the top of UK politics. Professor of Rhetoric Jennifer Mercieca, author of Demagogue for President: The Rhetorical Genius of Donald Trump, has submitted evidence to the January 6th Committee as to how Donald Trump uses words to incite violence more slyly than meets the eye.
