It’s August 23, 2020. I finished reading Ibram X. Kendi’s How To Be An Antiracist. I also attended a webinar hosted by WeBuyBlack.com, featuring Boyce Watkins. There are competing narratives describing how we should best move forward in the fight against the cause of racial inequity. In this episode I describe the landscape.
There are a few options you can do when setting up your wellness business or side gig but even more things that stop therapists like you from moving forward to make it happen. We discuss the common barriers, fears, and hesitations and help you overcome these in order to create the life you want to help the people who need you. Today, instead of listening to our usual 45-minute episode, we’re asking you to take that time to listen, read, or watch content that elevates black voices, black stories, and black-owned businesses.Podcasts:The 1619 Project from the New York Times Magazine is a multimedia initiative that began last August to mark the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It reframes American history by exploring the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans. Check out the entire project on the Times’s site, and listen to the podcast portion, simply called 1619.We’re also huge fans of NPR’s Code Switch. The podcast covers what they call “overlapping themes of race, ethnicity and culture, how they play out in our lives and communities, and how all of this is shifting.”The Ringer’s show Higher Learning has an episode titled “The Importance of the Nationwide Protests Over George Floyd’s Death.” If you want insight on where we go from here, this has it.Books:White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo has been recommended online endlessly over the last several days, and there’s a reason for that. The book explores why white people feel so uncomfortable talking about race. For a better understanding of the historical challenges of being black and doing business, read Hannibal Johnson’s Black Wall Street: From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District.Read some of the classics by black authors including Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, and Maya Angelou.Videos:Rachel Cargle’s YouTube video titled “Public Address On Revolution: Revolution Now” is a moving assessment of today’s reality. On Netflix, check out 13th from Ava Duvernay to understand the U.S. prison system’s history of racial inequality. You can also support black businesses. Find great compilations of those businesses on WeBuyBlack, The Black Wallet, and Official Black Wall Street. Finally, if you’re in the position to give, consider donating to one of the many reputable organizations helping further anti-racism causes. For more information about anti-racism or resources for further learning, look here, here, and here.
Between Us & Y’all: Conversations between a Mama & her young adult son.
When we communicate with our sons, it’s inevitable that conflict will arise. One of us may become frustrated with the tone, lack of a clear explanation offered, and other things that cause frustration. Strategies to work through that frustration isn’t a one size fits all type of deal. It’s important that you and your son have identified and tried your own strategies before your frustration leads to conflicts that cause harm. And as we all continue to grow in our mother/son relationships we will also need to discuss our plans to adapt to change as it relates to how we communicate with each other. In this episode, our first guests, Sudani & her son Qasim offer insight on their strategies for Resolving Conflict, Avoiding Tension and different ways to Adapt to Change. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! *Shirts advertised in this episode: WeBuyBlack short-sleeved shirt. (visit webuyblack (dot com)
As women of color our experiences in this world are unique to more than half the population. Tyree, is on today's episode to share her journey that's uniquely hers! Proud Brooklyn Native, Tyree aka BklynTye, is a natural-born powerhouse with an affinity for all things Hip-Hop and both ears to the streets. As a member and major supporter of the culture, Tye readily promotes artists, authors, small businesses, and up-and-coming brands with her trademark raw, uncut, and always genuine style. With a unique and avid eye for talent, she is an early adopter and encourager of many success stories. It has been said that Tye is somewhat of a walking billboard for those who she represents – rocking tees, buttons, stickers, hats, jewelry, and handbags of contemporary artisans. BklynTye is one of a kind in her approach and her pursuit to walk the talk by putting her money where her mouth is, investing her hard earned cash into those who she believes in – never asking for discounts or hookups. She lives her values as a promoter of the collective village, and now it's our turn to return that love. As you will often hear her say, “Spread love, it's the Brooklyn (Tye) way!” Tye mentioned a few things I wanted to reference here: WeBuyBlack: https://www.instagram.com/webuyblack/ Killer Mike Trigger Warning on Netflix Episode 1- Living Black: https://www.netflix.com/title/80144442 The Lip Bar: https://www.thelipbar.com/pages/our-story Come check me out: Insta: shift.talkerpodcast Web: https://aglasgowcoach.com/ Music Cred - I dunno by grapes (c) copyright 2008 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/grapes/16626 Ft: J Lang, Morusque --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/anna-glasgow/support
