Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 100 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won silver in the 200 meter.  It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. From his early years in competitive swimming when he actually vomited from nerves before every race, to his philosophical views on winning and losing, Ryan takes us through a career that's been built on family and team support, and incredible focus and drive. He also discusses his passion project, opening his St. Johns. Florida location of Goldfish Swim School, and helping to share the joyful and lifesaving skill of swimming. You don't want to miss this great conversation as we get an Olympic icon's valuable wisdom  on performing under pressure, the power of a team, dealing with the unknowns, and yes, managing the expectations. About Ryan MurphyRyan Murphy began breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment, Ryan has fulfilled his academic and athletic dreams. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four straight years. He holds the American Record in multiple backstroke events. In his Olympic debut in Rio, Ryan won three golds medals, sweeping the backstroke events and helping the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m medley relay, where his backstroke lead-off set a world record. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming. In 2021, he shined in Tokyo winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. A native of Ponte Vedra Beach (Jacksonville), Fla., Murphy is passionate about giving every young child the opportunity to learn how to swim and being a role model for young swimmers.  Connect with Ryan & Goldfish Swim SchoolsRyan Murphy websiteRyan on Instagram @ryan_f_murphyGoldfish Swim School Instagram Goldfish Swim School website About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. In Episode 33 of The Steak Lad Experience, I sat down with recently retired Australian swimmer, Alex Graham.  Having competed at the level elite for over 9 years, our conversation centered around his impressive track record which has seen him medal at the Olympic/Commonwealth Games as well the World/Pan Pacific championships.  We touched on how he dealt with the setbacks that have come his way, some of his best memories whilst competing at the highest level of swimming, what it was like to go to an Olympic Games, his future plans post retirement and much more. In addition, having only recently retired it was a privilege listening to him open up about some of the highs/lows throughout his incredible career.  Many listening to this will also know that Alex and I went to school together although it has been a very long time since we last connected, so to sit down with him over a long form discussion and enjoy some Steak was a real treat.  The Steak for this Podcast was supplied by the Char Char Char Butcher in Parkdale.  Socials  Alex Graham - Instagram The Steak Lad - YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok, & Facebook Watch This Episode on YouTube https://youtube/Graham Contact Email - darcy@thesteaklad.com Linktree - https://linktr.ee/thesteaklad

Freya Anderson is a British swimmer and Olympic medallist. Freya's journey to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was anything but smooth, as she faced significant challenges, including a battle with glandular fever that threatened her training and competition schedule. As well as delving into Freya's experiences as a swimmer at the Olympic Games, a significant part of our discussion focused on Freya's mental health journey, particularly her experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She explained the nature of OCD, how it manifests in her life, and the steps she has taken to manage it. Freya's openness about her struggles and the misconceptions surrounding OCD highlight the importance of raising awareness and understanding mental health issues. Throughout the episode, Freya's resilience and determination shone through, as she shared how setbacks have fuelled her desire to come back stronger. She emphasised the value of support from her team and the importance of self-care and mental well-being in the high-pressure world of elite sports. John Morales had an incredible conversation with Theresa Civantos Barber, the assistant editor for Aleteia, on the latest Morning Air podcast. They looked into the amazing journey of American swimmer Katie Ledecky, and trust us, it's a story you don't want to miss.    So, the Paris Summer Olympics had its fair share of drama because of the Opening Ceremony, but one athlete who truly stole the spotlight was Katie Ledecky.  She snagged four medals in Paris, including two golds, bringing her total to 14 Olympic medals! That makes her the most decorated American woman in Olympic history. Can you believe that?    But here's the thing—Katie's not just a powerhouse in the pool. She's got this incredible humble spirit and an unwavering Catholic faith that sets her apart from everyone else. Barber shared how Ledecky's humility and gratitude are what really make her shine. She's not one to brag; her high school teachers didn't even know she was Olympic bound until they saw it in the news. How wild is that?    Katie finds her calm and focus through prayer, especially the Hail Mary, which she says before every race. Imagine that—right before diving in, she's connecting with her faith.    Faith in Action   Katie's faith isn't just something she keeps to herself; she lives it out loud. She's a rockstar volunteer, serving meals to the homeless, leading campus ministry, and helping out in her family's parish.    Her virtues—perseverance, dedication, generosity, and humility—are not just words. They're a way of life. Katie's a role model for all of us, showing that you can be both an incredible athlete and a genuinely kind person.    Inspiring the Next Generation   Barber shared a sweet story about how her own kids are inspired by Katie. They've started incorporating prayer into their sports routines, just like Katie does. Her son, for instance, prayed the Hail Mary before his game because he was nervous. It's amazing to see how Katie's faith and dedication resonate with young athletes.    John mentions that Katie Ledecky's story is a shining example of how sports can be a school of virtue, echoing Pope St. John Paul II's sentiment that we can all be athletes for Christ.    Final Thoughts   Katie Ledecky's journey reminds us that true greatness isn't just in medals but in character. Her story is a beautiful example of how faith can anchor us, guide us, and inspire us to be better.    So, if you're looking for a role model who perfectly balances excellence with humility and competition with faith, Katie Ledecky is your girl.

She sat down with us to discuss what brought her to such high performance levels at such a young age, her dreams being muted due to a global pandemic, and life after sports.    Her candid conversation and stories surrounding new highs is grounded by her vulnerability in expressing the lows that came with that success. Her family laid the groundwork for her strong willpower and dedication to her craft. Listen to Ema reveal the pain of coming back to swimming after achieving her biggest dream.    Today, Ema works in the pharmaceutical industry researching ways to help be a part of the cure for cancer. Her swimming career taught herself and both of us many things about high performance, vulnerability and what it means to be human. Enjoy.
