Friday Juma KhutbaJune 5th, 2026- Eid al-Ghadir celebrates the completion and perfection of Islam, as reflected in Qur'an 5:3, and affirms the continued relevance of Islam through the institution of ijtihad.- The khutbah honored the late Grand Ayatullah Shaykh Ishaq Fayyaz, who passed away in Najaf at the age of 96.- Najaf's senior maraji' represented diverse backgrounds: Ayatullah Sayyid Saeed al-Hakim (Iraqi), Ayatullah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani (Iranian), Shaykh Ishaq Fayyaz (Afghani), and Ayatullah Shaykh Bashir Najafi (Pakistani).- These scholars were leading students of Ayatullah Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei and contributed significantly to Shi'a scholarship.- Despite independent legal opinions, the senior maraji' remained united on major socio-political issues affecting Iraq.- During the ISIS crisis, Ayatullah Sistani's call to defend Iraq was collectively supported by the other maraji', demonstrating unity of leadership.- Ayatullah al-Hakim emphasized that Ayatullah Sistani's statement alone was sufficient because he represented their collective voice.- In his condolence message, Ayatullah Sistani described Ayatullah Fayyaz as "a chosen brother."- A personal meeting with Ayatullah Fayyaz highlighted his encouragement for Muslims to participate actively in political systems.- He argued that Muslims should engage at all levels of government rather than limiting themselves to advisory roles.- Ayatullah Fayyaz cited the influence of the Jewish community in the United States as an example of how political participation can amplify a community's voice.- The speaker stressed that political involvement in Canada helps Muslims reduce challenges facing both the present and future generations.- Canadian Muslim advocacy succeeded in bringing attention to Islamophobia, leading to the appointment of Amira Elghawaby under the previous government.- Concerns were raised about Mark Carney replacing the Islamophobia office with a broader advisory council and the symbolism surrounding its launch and leadership.- Recent research from York University's Islamophobia Research Hub indicates continuing discrimination, marginalization, and workplace inequality experienced by Muslims in Canada.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Edith Szanto's Twelver Shi'i Self-Flagellation Rites in Contemporary Syria: Mourning Sayyida Zaynab (Edinburgh UP, 2025) is a striking and deeply immersive ethnographic study that takes the reader into the shrine town of Sayyida Zaynab in Syria. This town was a vibrant center of Shi‘i life, pilgrimage, and healing, especially for Iraqi refugees until the 2011 Syrian uprising. By combining meticulous fieldwork conducted between 2004 and 2010 with rich historical and social context, Szanto shows how these contested rituals served as both spiritual expression and pathways to worldly and psychological healing. The book examines controversial Muharram practices, especially self-flagellation, not simply as ritual acts but as deeply meaningful responses to trauma, displacement, and the search for justice and healing. In doing so, Szanto pays close attention to how people actually live their religion: through relationships with saints, engagement with religious authorities, media, ritual performance, and forms of spiritual healing. In this conversation, Szanto and I explore specific Muharram practices, including self-flagellation, the wedding of Qasim, and other ritualized forms of mourning, as well as gendered dynamics in who participates and why. We discuss what these practices looked like on the ground—what Muharram in Sayyida Zaynab felt like, how different communities understood and debated these rituals, and what purposes they served for those who participated in them. We talk about the Zaynabiyya seminary and how changes in its physical and institutional structure reshaped how knowledge was taught and who held authority. We also discuss relationships with saints, spiritual healers like Shaykh Abu Ahmad, and the ways that media, music, and ritual performance mediate piety. Szanto also treats us to reflecting on some of her experiences observing and engaging with these rituals. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Islamic studies generally, Shi‘i studies, Middle Eastern religious life, or the ways that communities navigate devotion, trauma, and healing through ritual. The History of Jihad: From Muhammad to ISIS. Robert Spencer https://youtu.be/yTMFsl_RmeY?si=RoPPUlCzL8lN2WbD Sangam Talks 1.11M subscribers 176,278 views Premiered Mar 16, 2021 Reclaiming Indian History It is taken for granted, even among many Washington policymakers, that Islam is a fundamentally peaceful religion and that Islamic jihad terrorism is something relatively new, a product of the economic and political ferment of the twentieth century. But in The History of Jihad: From Muhammad to ISIS, Islamic scholar Robert Spencer proves definitively that Islamic terror is as old as Islam itself, as old as Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, who said “I have been made victorious through terror.” Spencer briskly traces the 1,400-year war of Islamic jihadis against the rest of the world, detailing the jihad against Europe, including the 700-year struggle to conquer Constantinople; the jihad in Spain, where non-Muslims fought for another 700 years to get the jihadi invaders out of the country; and the jihad against India, where Muslim warriors and conquerors wrought unparalleled and unfathomable devastation in the name of their religion. Told in great part in the words of contemporary chroniclers themselves, both Muslim and non-Muslim, The History of Jihad shows that jihad warfare has been a constant of Islam from its very beginnings, and present-day jihad terrorism proceeds along exactly the same ideological and theological foundations as did the great Islamic warrior states and jihad commanders of the past. The History of Jihad: From Muhammad to ISIS is the first one-volume history of jihad in the English language, and the first book to tell the whole truth about Islam's bloody history in an age when Islamic jihadis are more assertive in Western countries than they have been for centuries. This book is indispensable to understanding the geopolitical situation of the twenty-first century, and ultimately to formulating strategies to reform Islam and defeat radical terror. About the Speaker: ROBERT SPENCER is the director of Jihad Watch and a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center. He is the author of twenty-one books, including the New York Times bestsellers The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) (Regnery Publishing) and The Truth About Muhammad (Regnery Publishing) and the bestselling The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS (Bombardier Books) . Spencer has led seminars on Islam and jihad for the FBI, the United States Central Command, United States Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army's Asymmetric Warfare Group, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), the Justice Department's Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council and the U.S. intelligence community. He has discussed jihad, Islam, and terrorism at a workshop sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the German Foreign Ministry. He is a senior fellow with the Center for Security Policy. Oral Arguments for the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Mohammad-Qasim v. Bondi
The Irish-Palestinian singer and filmmaker speaks about embracing her Arabic heritage in her music, and the resurgence of interest in keening and Irish folklore. The Irish-Palestinian artist Róisín El Cherif has spent 18 months advocating for the people of Palestine, speaking out on the injustice and genocide in Gaza. El Cherif has begun singing in Arabic on stage, noting the connections between Irish and Arabic folk music and culture. It's best encapsulated in the Róisín El Cherif live show, which debuted at the Fringe Festival and was given a Fringe award for Astounding Performance of Political and Cultural Significance. The next live show takes place at the Button Factory in Dublin next week, Wednesday April 30th, which will be a blend of live music, poetry and film visuals featuring clips from Arabic films, Palestinian folk music and drawing parallels with Irish mythology and folklore - the cailleach, banshees and keening which is also found in Arabic culture as wailing, and further represents and celebrates the oppressed people of Palestine. El Cherif recently accepted the Choice Music Prize award on behalf of Fontaines D.C. by reciting part of a poem from Palestinian poet Samih al-Qasim written in 1971 called Enemy of the Sun which speaks of Palestinian resistance against Israel. We also talk about the reaction to Kneecap's recent Pro-Palestine statements at Coachella.

Qasim Ijaz Qasim Ijaz is the director of cybersecurity at a leading healthcare organization, overseeing detection, incident response, vulnerability management, purple teaming, and cybersecurity engineering. With a strong background in offensive security and risk management, he has helped organizations strengthen their defenses against evolving threats. He is also a dedicated educator, mentoring professionals and sharing his expertise at conferences such as BSides and Black Hat. You don't need to go far in the news these days to find out that another organization was hacked. Data breeches are a nightmare scenario for both leaders and the people they support. In this episode, Qasim and I explore what your team and you can do to be a bit more prepared. Key Points Use multi-factor authentication, passphrases, and a password manager. Freeze your personal credit reports. Do this for free directly with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Leaders in bigger roles (executives, CEOs, board members) are larger targets for hackers due to their access and also their ability to occasionally side-step organizational guidelines. It's the non-technical pieces of a cyber response that organizations are least prepared for. Conduct incident response and disaster recovery tabletop exercises to uncover vulnerabilities before an attack. Regardless of organizational policy, employees will use AI. The best prevention assumes the inevitability of human behavior and works with it to improve systems. Featuring Abdel Razzaq Takriti, this is the ELEVENTH episode of Thawra (Revolution), our rolling mini-series on Arab radicalism in the 20th century. Today's installment tells the story of the destruction of the two giant revolutionary projects of 1958: the union of Egypt and Syria under Nasser's United Arab Republic and Iraq's July Revolution that brought Qasim alongside communist allies to power. The rival radical projects of pan-Arabism and communism suffered huge blows. So did Nasser and Qasim, the era's most significant Arab anti-imperialist leaders. Meanwhile, the Ba'ath, once ideological and idealistic, became increasingly dominated by military men who made the party into an instrument for raw domination. Featuring Abdel Razzaq Takriti, this is the TENTH episode of Thawra (Revolution), our rolling mini-series on Arab radicalism in the 20th century. Today's installment tells the story of Iraq's 1958 July Revolution: a Free Officers' coup overthrew the imperialist-aligned Hashemite monarchy and brought nationalist Abdul-Karim Qasim to power alongside a surging Communist Party. Revolutionary currents soon turned against one another, however, as did Qasim and Nasser. Conflict stemmed from serious political and strategic differences, but also petty rivalries and bitter feuds. And in Iraq, class conflict often appeared dressed up in the sectarian and ethnic modalities through which class was lived.
