Join host Ama-Robin as she dives deep into the relentless chaos of living Black in predominantly white spaces. In this episode, we explore the challenges faced by Black people, from microaggressions and tokenism to racial profiling and economic exploitation. We also confront the emotional labor of constantly educating others about racism and the toll it takes on our well-being. Through powerful storytelling and insightful commentary, Ama-Robin sheds light on the pervasive assault on our humanity. Tune in as we confront the complexities of race, power, and identity, and reclaim our voices in the face of adversity. Join this uncommon conversation about this hidden chaos.
Living Black host Karla Grant returns for the program's 21st year, kicking off season 31 on April 22nd. The show remains Australia's longest-running Indigenous current affairs program, offering a powerful platform for First Nations voices.
I work really hard to out my guests at ease when we are having a recorded conversation, but for this episode, it was my guest that put me at ease discussing topics in which I am not an expert, but she certainly is. Sam Kingsley is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Consultant specialising in strategy and culture change, and she describes herself as a Professional Troublemaker. We covered lots of tough topics which are sometimes shocking to hear, but Sam is forging ahead with her mission to turn Why into How… Intersectionality and why it is vital to ensure everyone feels that they belong. Her key involvement in the Living Black at University work and who, if anyone is taking this forward. How she very quickly joined the board of Student Pride and how she is vocal in her activism for LGBTQ+ causes all year round. And so much more, I learned so much from Sam and I know you will too. As always, I asked Sam to recommend future guests, and she nominated Tom Guy, Helene Murphy and Rebecca O'Hare, we look forward to recording great episodes with you all soon. Rebecca also discusses how her background in fine art influences her approach at work, and how social media has supported her professional presence and development. What's Next? returns to Olean for a conversation with Della Moore, the founder and executive director of the African American Center for Cultural Development. She first came to Olean 52 years ago and has since become a fixture of the community. Her center is full of artifacts from the local black history of the Southern Tier, including items from her own personal collection. Moore joins host Jay Moran and producer Patrick Hosken for a tour of the center and a discussion about its mission and history, and what she's learned from a half-century in Olean.

Anything that is unfair, really annoys Jenny Shaw. This has driven her work, but where does this come from?Jenny opened up about things with me on Know Your Shift that were really difficult for her to share.Jenny has been open about her imposter syndrome, but how does that really affect her?We also got stuck into her incredible work with Unite and the Unite Foundation, including the Living Black at University research, and her work with government on Student Mental Health.Jenny has changed Higher Education in the UK, but she doesn't think about it like that. And we saved a subject to the end that was really big for her to share… P.S. In this episode of Living Black Podcast Nayla & Ari speak on the terrible safety within American schools, especially with the terrible gun laws in place in our country. We offer condolences to any of our listeners that have been impacted by any mass shootings or gun violence in our country. It's time we speak on how our schools deal with school safety and as teenagers ourselves in HS feel about their safety procedures. Interested in learning more about Living Black? It's NAIDOC Week 2022 and this year's theme is: Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! So how can non-indigenous Australians recognise their white privilege and help make systemic change to keep rallying around First Nations Australians? The Labor Government has committed to the Uluru Statement From The Heart, and the New South Wales Government has promised to erect a permanent Aboriginal flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge by the end of the year, so what's next? The Quicky speaks to two well-known First Nations women to find out how white privilege continues to hurt Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and what we can all do to help progress the cause of reconciliation in this country. It's still February, which means it's still Black History Month! We're back with a new episode and new guests, as promised. Joined by Shannon Clash, a friend of the show and nationally recognized storyteller, this week's discussion focuses on the time of year when we celebrate and honor all of the contributions African Americans have made to this country. Yet, with every BHM that rolls around we feel as though we're still fighting to be recognized. Throughout the episode we share our own experiences with learning Black history, intersectionality and recent efforts to restrict how schools teach about Black history, race and racism. Interestingly, our conversation leads back to the fallacy of White ‘discomfort'. We all agree that while Black history is integral to our national narrative, Black people should not be tokenized to educate non-Black Americans. Give our amazing guest, Shannon a follow on Instagram and Twitter to keep up with more of her visionary storytelling. The Black community continues to have difficulty discussing and acknowledging ADHD and other mental health issues. On the flip side, it's being reported that Black children are being over- and under-diagnosed, due to implicit racial bias and cultural incompetence among professionals. So, how do we change the mindset of Black Americans about mental health issues and culturally insensitive educators and healthcare providers? Dr. Brandi Walker provides insight into the Black community's reluctance to discuss mental health matters, myths about diagnosis and treatment, the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated ADHD, and much more.
