"I loved being a journalist," writes Jackie Annesley in a frank essay about losing her last job in journalism, as editor of The Sunday Times Style supplement, where, among many other things, she commissioned the PanDolly podcast from two of her columnists; it's now better known by its second name, The High Low, with journalists Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton. Jackie's exit from The Sunday Times is accompanied with euphemisms about 'replacement' and 'commercial decisions'. In the months that followed what she felt was the end of a career in newspapers - editing The Sunday Times' News Review, being in charges of features at the London Evening Standard and editing the Daily Mail's Femail section - Jackie realised that this sudden change in circumstances could, in fact, work for her. She's now Creative Director for start-up Soda Says. 'Soda' stands for School of the Digital Age, and, according to their Instagram bio, they've been "selling tech to you and your mother since 2017." Jackie writes a fun, irreverent weekly newsletter for them, and hosts the podcast Talk Tech to Me, where she asks starry guests to explain their relationships with their mobile phones. The first episode features Anne Robinson of the Weakest Link fame, and it's great fun. What Jackie has to say is packed with wisdom and good advice, as well as an appreciation of how journalistic innovation has sped up thanks to the internet, while the money has drained away... thanks to the internet. A "sunset industry"? Perhaps, but the lessons in communication that journalism teaches you are more important in a digital age than ever before. -- How has your industry moved from analogue to digital? Each episode, creative guests tell host Suchandrika Chakrabarti how the internet has revolutionised work. ProBlogger Podcast: Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging
How One Blogger Took Action, Left Her Job, and Began a Lifestyle Blog Today marks the end of our series featuring stories from new bloggers. We really hope you've enjoyed them. Jackie Baker recently started a lifestyle blog that celebrates the beauty in everyday life. She considered blogging as a business because she needed a career change that would both challenge her and leave time for a vacation once in a while. But what would she write about? Jackie narrowed her blog's focus to a few topics that bring joy, peace, and happiness to both her readers and herself. Hence the title of her blog: Pretty Things, Yummy Food. What Jackie has learned from blogging: Take action and keep pushing forward when you feel stuck or scared Create a plan to prioritize tasks you need to get done Sign up for courses that show you how to start/launch a blog Connect with other bloggers who understand your excitement and frustration Embrace social media to find readers and build a community Use Canva to design graphics Don’t stress about what others think about you or your blog Want to start a blog? Do it and don’t doubt yourself. Follow your gut, get into a blogging mindset, and find your message to discover you have plenty to offer the world. My name is Darren Rowse and I’m the blogger behind problogger.com, which is a site for you as a blogger or someone about to start a blog, that will help you grow that blog, create great content, and monetize it as well. You can learn more about what we do at ProBlogger and check out our two courses at problogger.com. Speaking of our courses, today we’re finishing up our series of podcasts from stories who did our free Start A Blog course. We’re going to hear today from Jackie Baker from Pretty Things, Yummy Food, which sounds like the kind of blog I need to check out, particularly the yummy food part of it. This series really is all about hearing from new bloggers, bloggers who haven’t been going for too long yet, to find out what they’ve learnt in their first year of blogging. I have loved the feedback we’ve had on this series. It seems that a lot of you have enjoyed hearing from new voices, people that they’ve never heard of before, rather than just hearing from experts or gurus or people who have been blogging for 10 years. The new bloggers have been sharing some of their journey as well. We’re doing this really to highlight that people are continuing to start blogs these days and that there is a simple way to do it. That’s through our Start A Blog course, which you can find over at problogger.com/startablog. It’s completely free and it’s set out in seven simple steps that will walk you through the process. Today, we’ve got Jackie Baker from Pretty Things, Yummy Food. It’s a lifestyle blog and it’s only been going for six months. Jackie started her blog as a result of going through our course and you’re going to hear her talk a little bit about that in today’s story. She recommends a great tool for those of you who are starting out and want to create some cool social graphics and gives you a few good tips as well. I’ll come back at the end of Jackie’s story to wrap things up and to pull out a few of the things that I love about her story. Jackie: Hi everyone. I’m Jackie, the creator of Pretty Things, Yummy Food.
Nadine Pequeneza and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Next of Kin, community, addiction, child welfare in Canada, memory and hockey camps and why everyone has their own truth. Trailer Synopsis Filmmaker Nadine Pequeneza’s new documentary Next of Kin is a detective story in which the goal is not to catch a killer but to save a life. Two lives, in this case: Jacob and Tahylour’s.More than 60,000 children across Canada have been separated from their families and placed in either foster care or group homes. Compared to their peers, these youth aging out of care around age 19 do not fare well. Too often, they drop out of school, end up on welfare, in jail, or homeless. Many suffer from substance abuse or PTSD. But what if one family connection could alter their future? Next of Kin profiles an innovative program at the Resource Association For Teens (RAFT) in St. Catharines, Ontario. RAFT’s family finding program aims to give Jacob and Tahylour a support network by helping them find loved ones they’ve never known. RAFT social workers-turned-sleuths Jackie Winger and Amanda Elam begin their search by probing Jacob and Tahylour’s memories: what can they recall about their family home, parents, neighbours? They dig into government records and databases, navigate social media networks, and carefully search through school yearbooks, phone directories and newspaper obituaries: anything that might offer leads to bring Jacob and Tahylour one step closer to finding their biological families. What Jackie and Amanda help Jacob and Tahylour discover will change their lives in unexpected ways. Next of Kin is about the lasting scars of broken families and the urgent need to improve our child welfare system so children can grow up to lead healthy, productive lives.BiographyNadine Pequeneza is best known for her observational films offering unique access to character-driven stories about social justice. Her awards and nominations include: a Canadian Screen Award (CSA) for Best Writing in a Documentary, seven CSA and Gemini Award nominations, a Gold Hugo Award from the Chicago International Film Festival, a Golden Sheaf Award from the Yorkton Film Festival, and a Silver Gavel Honorable Mention from the American Bar Association. Most recently, Pequeneza produced and directed The Invisible Heart, Road to Mercy; Up In Arms; and Inside Disaster. Her award-winning film 15 To Life: Kenneth’s Story premiered on the acclaimed PBS series POV and garnered three Canadian Screen Award nominations for Best Directing, Best Writing, and the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary. It won the CSA Award for Best Writing in 2016. Nadine is a Fledgling Fellow and Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada. Image Copyright: Nadine Pequeneza and Hit Play productions. This is the story of how Jackie Prete healed herself from a traumatic accident and how you can too. She found herself in excruciating pain and motionless in a hospital bed after being run over on her bike. The prospect was dire. Her shattered leg may leave her unable to walk, teach yoga, being potentially deformed for life and/ or permanently on crutches. Not a sunny outlook for anyone but especially dire for someone whose livelihood depends on teaching yoga and movement. A four hour surgery put her body back together. Her resilience and strong belief that she will heal carried her through mentally and emotionally. Simple and down to earth practices from Yoga and Ayurveda, diet & lifestyle practices were integral to her healing as well. Today Jackie travels worldwide again to share the power of yoga asana, diet and lifestyle practices. What you get from tuning in: 5 simple strategies to work with the body and mind after an accident How to use yogic practices to heal more quickly from a severe accident The role of chanting & mantra in the healing process (if you don’t know what that is you definitely want to find out about it in this podcast) The big lesson of receiving The role of rest, love and space in recovery What Jackie most needed from helpers during recovery (you might need that too) Yoga postures during the recovery process The countless blessings of a traumatic accident The power of community Visit my Website Join my private Facebook Group Watch the free video series 5 secrets to a Better Menopause Upgrade your body experience. My guest for The Happy Hour # 190 is Jackie Hill Perry. Jackie is a writer and artist whose work has been featured on such publications as the Washington Times and The 700 Club. Since being saved from a lifestyle of homosexuality, she has been compelled to use her speaking and teaching gifts to share the light of the gospel of God as authentically as she can. She is signed to Humble Beast Records and released her debut album, The Art of Joy, in 2014. At home, she is a wife to Preston and Mommy to Eden. For two years I've been working on getting Jackie on the show, and I am so excited to share our conversation with you today. On today's episode we cover some challenging topics: racial issues and homosexuality. I know these topics can bring us into uncomfortable or tense spaces, but I believe talking about hard issues is valuable and important, and my hope is that we can all be listeners and learners in these spaces. Jackie and I begin the show talking about gospel diversity and the power of indifference. She describes how we can gain knowledge about the issues, but not take that knowledge and change how we live out our lives. The perspective she gives about the impact of indifference and inaction is powerful. In the second half of the show, Jackie shares her story of how she was living a life of homosexuality and how God pursued her and saved her in a way only God could. You are going to love hearing her talk about how her public ministry began just FIVE months after she decided to follow Jesus - her first public testimony was all because she wanted a free t-shirt! You guys, Jackie is bold and she speaks some powerful truths. When I asked her if she was afraid to fail, she said "Either I trust God or I don't... If I fall, then I fall and I get up and trust God some more". {You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Immensely excited and grateful to be interviewing the remarkable, Jackie Turner on Living Fearlessly with Lisa McDonald this Friday at 8am Pacific/11am Eastern on The Contact Talk radio Network! Jackie and I will be discussing, and sharing with loyal listeners, her triumph over abuse, foster care, and how today she brings comfort to those who are hurting, with an empathy born of a suffering many of us will never have to endure. Jackie was abandoned as a baby by her teenage Mom, then beaten, starved, and neglected by her guardians, abandoned again to the foster care system, then later taken in by her father, who also abused her. She felt like nobody wanted her. As the holidays were approaching in 2013, and holidays being synonymous with family, love, inclusivity - Jackie wrote an ad on Craigslist...asking to hire parents for $8 an hour! The outcome was more than she expected. "Maybe for a couple of hours, just feel like the light of their life for that moment," she told CBS about what she hoped to achieve with her ad. In advocating for herself, Jackie realized then that there were many people going through the same struggle she was. What Jackie did next was nothing short of selfless brilliance!
