Celebrate the life and music of Orville “Hoppy” Jones, a founding member of the Ink Spots, a legendary vocal group with roots in the Indiana Avenue scene.   As the Ink Spots' bass vocalist, Hoppy developed a unique “talking bass” — a spoken-word recitation that helped define the group's sound. Immensely popular with listeners in the late 1930s and 1940s, its rhythmic, narrative delivery has led some music historians to describe Hoppy as a forerunner of later spoken-word and rap traditions.  Though his life was cut tragically short at age 39, Hoppy left behind a sound and a style that helped shape American popular music.

Hot Box 148 is going to be both sad and joyful since we now remember the extraordinary drummer Jack DeJohnette who died at the end of October aged 83. He was a native of Chicago and certainly could lay a claim to being the greatest of all jazz drummers. Immensely influential in the overall direction of drumming in jazz and, by any standards, extraordinarily versatile. You only have to rattle off the names of the musicians he worked with to emphasise that point, take Miles Davis for example, then Bill Evans, John Surman, Keith Jarrett and Pat Matheney, really ticking most of the boxes in the post-bop era. So, let's listen to some of that music while we pay tribute to an extraordinary musician. It's being argued people in Clare will "suffer immensely" as a result of a proposed renewable energy development along the county's west coast. Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta lodged a planning application in January for what it described as a "landmark" wind farm consisting of 30 turbines of 1,000 feet in height off the coast of Clare and Galway. With An Bórd Pleanála due to make a decision on the development in late July, Clare's councillors debated the issue at this week's meeting and their comments are to be appended to the application as a submission. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch has put in a personal submission and he believes as the plans currently stand, Galway will reap the benefits while Clare people will experience the most disruption.

Can I share a “fun fact” about myself with you? I've been setting goals since I was a child. Obviously, at the time, I didn't really know they were goals. They were just things I wanted, that I would write or speak…I'd even share with others. I can safely say that setting goals from an early age until now has contributed IMMENSELY to all that I've accomplished today. Sure, I haven't achieved everything I set out too…but I either keep working towards those things or I align my goals to where I'm at now. My point is that to be successful in life, you should be setting and working towards your goals. Not sure where to start? In this episode, I'm sharing some of my best tips for setting goals and staying on track to achieving them!   Here's a glance at this episode: [01:40] Raya recalls her early experiences with setting and achieving goals, by sharing a story of getting started with acting. [04:01] When setting goals, following the SMART criteria is a must. Raya breaks down the SMART criteria to follow with your goals. [06:50] Don't beat yourself up for not reaching your goals when you want to. Life happens, so give yourself grace.  [09:13] Raya is reminded of her annual goals 3 different times throughout the day. She shares how she keeps her goals front and center. [13:07] Speaking your goals out loud makes them real. Don't be afraid to share your goals with others. It will help you stay accountable.   Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Are you a fan of the City Girl Savings podcast? If so, please consider rating and reviewing the show! It's Oct 2nd as I write. The Oak Island area on Sauvie Island, near Portland Oregon closed to recreational use for the season yesterday. For the coming Fall and Winter, it will serve as a haven for the birds, save for the occasional hunters. Last winter, when I brought my Soundwalk podcast to Substack, I embarked on a series touching down at certain points in the greater area I referred to as the Columbia Lowlands. I'm pleased to say I'm taking us back there, covering some spots that I didn't get to last time through. Lewis and Clark called this area the Wappato Valley, after the edible tuber, Wapato, that the Native Americans harvested here on Sauvie Island. The island was also named Wappato Island, the geographical center of Wappato Valley. (Both the double P spelling and the geographic names didn't really take.) Today, this area is also referred to as the Portland Basin.Oak Island in the early 1800s would have looked pretty similar to what it looks like now—only without pastures—and the name would have made more sense than it does today, because the land mass used to be surrounded by shallow lakes. Today it more resembles a peninsula. Like the lakes of the Columbia Bayou (slough) on north side of Portland, many lakes on Sauvie Island were drained in the early 1900's, and dikes were built, hardening the river bank. Now, as far as I know, the only marker honoring the stewardship of this land by Native Americans is found a few steps into the Oak Island Nature Trail. There you will see wood post with a line drawing of a two people in a canoe with a QR code underneath. Focusing on that QR code with a smartphone will pull up a page, offering the following:Two hundred years ago, Native Americans walked on this very spot. Each year, just before winter, tribes from up and down the Columbia and Willamette rivers gathered on Oak Island for a trading fair which included dancing and festivities.I want to know more about that. I want to imagine what that looked like, what that sounded like. Of the environmental sound, Capt. William Clark leaves only this description on November 5th, 1805, from the vicinity of Sauvie Island:I could not sleep for the noise kept by the Swans, Geese, white & black brant, Ducks etc. on a opposit base, & Sand hill Crane, they were emensely numerous and their noise horrid. Immensely numerous and horrid. Ha! We will hear numerous birds soon enough in our extended soundwalk survey. For now, on our Oak Island Road Soundwalk, we hear just a handful of bugling Sandhill Cranes, small flocks of geese, wintering songbirds, Pacific tree frogs and light rain showers. Anything but horrid to my ears. Dig a little deeper and you'll discover 200 years ago is just the tip of the iceberg. Native Americans lived in various village sites on the island dating back 2500 years; one thousand generations! (Archeological sites upriver near The Dalles increase that time horizon to human occupation of the area going back well over 10,000 years ago). And all they got was a QR code. How do we know Native Americans lived on Sauvie Island so long? Well, less than a mile south of Oak Island is Merrybelle Farm. Several archeological digs occurred here, beginning in 1958. Analyzing the projectile points and found here with others found on the island and throughout the region, Richard Pettigrew points to an estimated timeline of village occupation at the Merrybelle site from 600 BCE to 200 CE. There were 16 known village sites on Sauvie Island. Several have been the subject of formal archeological excavation. Many were picked over by amateur artifact collectors. Some were buried or partially buried under tons of dike soil. One was “sunken”, preserving woven baskets in the mud for up to 700 years. Today there's no physical reminder of the civilization that existed here before Euro-American settlers; no formal mention or marker, save for a recently renamed bridge. Wapato Bridge. It's a start. Scholars believe the Wapato Valley once sustained the highest population density north of Mexico in aboriginal times. Isn't this a story that should be told?In fourth grade we had a “Pioneer Day”. We came to school in costume: bonnets for the girls. Cowboy hats for boys. Did some boys bring toy guns? Did anyone dress up as an Indian? Seems plausible. We rolled out pasta from scratch, cutting broad noodles for chicken noodle soup “like the pioneers did”. We pledged allegiance to the flag every morning. We did not learn we were inhabiting what was once the cradle of the largest Native American population center, in the Portland Basin, in the United States. When I walk around on Sauvie Island, I try to picture the long house villages, and the multitude of dugout canoes. When I went paddleboarding on Sturgeon Lake a month ago my feet sank up to my calves in mud as I clumsily launched my craft. I imagined Wapato growing there, plentifully. I imagined Native Americans loosening the root bulbs with their toes, harvesting them in floating baskets. The land of plenty. People of the river. This soundwalk was recorded on mild December evening last year, on Oak Island Road, adjacent the Wildlife Area. There are half a dozen farm houses on this quiet spur road. It was very relaxing, and nourishing. I totally recommend this to anyone in the area. Like last time, the composition is almost entirely solo performances strung together. Four voices: piano, a clean Wurlitzer electric piano, a modified Wurlitzer electric piano, and a piano with heavy tape effects. All taking turns. It won't always be like this, though. In fact, next week I have a whole new direction I'm excited to unveil! Til then, thanks for reading, for listening, for joining me here.Oak Island Road Soundwalk is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) today, Friday, October 4th. Treat the silence as a beautiful entity. As the divine mother, Shakti. The silence is all power. Never take the silence for granted. You should start feeling the silence as God. Feel good when you are in the silence. Up to now many of you have believed that silence is nothing. It is a divine nothingness. Remember it's out of the silence that everything comes. When you return to the silence this is actually a self-surrender. You are surrendering your ego, your lifestyle, your karma, everything is surrendered to the silence. Remember never believe that silence is a waste of time. Just as we realize now space is really consciousness. There is no such thing as space. It appears to be space but it's really consciousness. In the same way, the silence is consciousness. It's a living entity. It's alive, it's reality. Therefore, sit in the silence and rejoice." - Robert Adams  The Hindu scriptures tell us that if for one night and one day, without a moment's interruption, a devotee talks to God with intense devotion, He will respond." - Paramahansa Yogananda Repeat: "My past was riddled with outside influence. I depended on my circumstances to define my existence. But things have changed. Even if there's heaviness around me, there's self-sustaining peace within me. I move to the beat of my own energy because I own my energy. Im aware that my happiness, my peace, my successes are all inside jobs. I recognize that the subtle nuances in my environment are created by what I'm emitting. Not the other way around. My life has shifted immensely. We get into some data indicating that the number of Israeli backpackers visiting Colombia has increased exponentially in recent years.  We're talking about how the Devil of Taganga & his posse of former Israeli servicemen came to run a seaside village on the coast of Colombia, turning their hostel compound into a drug den & brothel w/ the help of an ex-paramilitant & crooked cops, terrorizing the townsfolk on their 4X4 Jeeps flying Star of David flags, press-ganging the local girls into prostitution. One of the terrible fruits of their stranglehold on the formerly bucolic, tropical fishing village was a localized AIDS epidemic, so pernicious was their influence. We reveal how the Devil of Taganga, this Israeli kingpin named A s i B e n M o s h, would ultimately face deportation & still inexplicably escape all the charges brought against him, time & again. In the sixteenth century, members of the Ouchi family were kings in all but name in much of Japan. Immensely wealthy, they controlled sea lanes stretching to Korea and China, as well as the Japanese city of Yamaguchi, which functioned as an important regional port with a growing population and a host of temples and shrines. The family was unique in claiming ethnic descent from Korean kings, and-remarkably for this time-such claims were recognized in both Korea and Japan. Their position, coupled with dominance over strategic ports and mines, allowed them to facilitate trade throughout East and Southeast Asia. They also played a key cultural role in disseminating Confucian texts, Buddhist sutras, ink paintings, and pottery, and in creating a distinctive, hybrid culture that fused Japanese, Korean, and Chinese beliefs, objects, and customs. Kings in All But Name: The Lost History of Ouchi Rule in Japan, 1350-1569 (Oxford UP, 2024) illustrates how Japan was an ethnically diverse state from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries, closely bound by trading ties to Korea and China. It reveals new archaeological and textual evidence proving that East Asia had integrated trading networks long before the arrival of European explorers and includes an analysis of ores and slag that shows how mining techniques improved and propelled East Asian trade. The story of the Ouchi rulers argues for the existence of a segmented polity, with one center located in Kyoto, and the other in the Ouchi city of Yamaguchi. It also contradicts the belief that Japan collapsed into centuries of turmoil and rather proves that Japan was a stable and prosperous trading state where rituals, policies, politics, and economics were interwoven and diverse. THANK YOU everyone for listening to our podcast!!!!!  It is never lost on us how valuable your time is, and to spend it here, we are truly grateful. We travel a fair bit for our life and business.  This isn't a complaint.  We're also fully aware these are first world problems.  But they are still things WE have to deal with.  Trust me. I understand how blessed we are. Immensely.  But with that comes different stressors.  Like? Packing anxiety. Do you get it?  Kim does.  Listen how and why and the underlying roots beneath it all.We LOVE our current home.  We basically designed it exactly how we want through renovations.  Its served us so well.  If you had asked us a year ago if we would ever move, we probably would have said no.  But we've had an energetic shift in our life this past year, and both Kim and I can see, its time we move.  We feel it. We know it.  It was so evident to the both of us recently.Yes, there is trauma there.  But it's even more.  It's wanting an expansive state and environment and that's where we are going.  Change is good, and necessary,  And the only people that need to fully understand THE WHY is YOU. And we do.We summarize the episode with an incredible experience Kim had at a women's event for a room full of bankers and how a call and interview with Brendon Burchard was life changing for her.Thank you so much everyone, we hope you love this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.K&JSIGN UP FOR WORKSHOPS, RETREATS, AND APPLY TO WORK WITH KIM & JAMIE: bit.ly/WorkWithKimFitzpatrickCONTACT INFO:Private Coaching:jamie@fitzlifeconsulting.comkim@fitzlifeconsulting.com Kim:www.jamieandkimfitzpatrick.comIG: @kim_m_fitzpatrickTikTok: @kimmfitzpatrickFB: https://www.facebook.com/kim.p.fitzpatrickE: kim@jamieandkimfitzpatrick.comJamie: www.jamieandkimfitzpatrick.com IG: @jamiefitzpatrickentrepreneur FB: https://www.facebook.com/CoachJamieFitzpatrick/ E: jamie@jamieandkimfitzpatrick.com

How is ICE handling complaints of sexual abuse from detainees? Maria Hinojosa teams up with Zeba Warsi, two immigrant women and journalists from different generations, to look at sexual abuse in ICE detention more than a decade after Maria's documentary film on this topic. This time, they investigate how women in ICE detention are sexually abused when they were at their most vulnerable —in a medical setting— and how ICE has done very little to stop it. A special by Futuro Investigates in collaboration with Latino USA.
